Year 9

Year 9

This week in Luminary, Year 9 students explored the theme of building confidence to be themselves in a world where there can often be pressure to conform. Students began by considering what it means to “be yourself” and discussed examples of social conformity, including the moments when young people may feel pressure to fit in or meet the expectations of others.

Students then applied these ideas through the creation of an “Authentic Self Shield”. This activity encouraged them to identify the things they love, their personal strengths, what makes them unique, and a courage statement about how they can continue to grow in confidence and stay true to themselves.

During Chapel, students were also encouraged to reflect on their strengths, gifts and talents, and to consider how they can allow these qualities to shine and share them with the world. At this stage of adolescence, Year 9 students can sometimes find it challenging to recognise their own strengths and may be more inclined to focus on what they perceive as their limitations. The Luminary activities completed throughout the week provide valuable opportunities for students to view themselves through a more positive lens, celebrate their individuality, and recognise the unique contribution they can make to their community.

I encourage you to continue this conversation at home by speaking with your daughter about the gifts, strengths and talents she sees in herself, as well as those you see in her. These conversations can be a powerful way to help our girls continue to build confidence in who they are, particularly in a world that often encourages conformity and where social media can present narrow stereotypes about how young people should look, act or be. By recognising and celebrating their unique qualities, Year 9 can be encouraged to find meaningful ways to share their gifts with others and make a positive contribution to the world around them.
