Wrapped Up in Culture

Embracing culture is an exciting  part of learning, and our Year 8 to Year 10 Japanese classes recently enjoyed hands on cultural workshop exploring furoshiki, traditional Japanese cloths that can be folded to wrap everyday items. Students were fascinated to learn about the long history, and the beautiful coloured cloths made the experience even more engaging.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of Akahane sensei from The Japan Foundation, students discovered the rich cultural meaning behind the different wrapping styles.They loved using their Japanese skills throughout the session and were delighted to wrap a range of items, from laptop bags to drink bottles and even a volleyball. Many students are keen to continue practising their wrapping skills, especially after realising it offers an environmentally friendly option.

The furoshiki workshop was a lovely and memorable way for the students to connect language with culture.
