A Conservation Biologist’s Dream of Improving Endangered Species Survival – Discover Lecture Series with Macquarie
Organisation: Macquarie University
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus
Date: May 21, 2026

In the late 20th century, scientists around the world became alarmed by the sudden collapse of frog populations. Decades later the cause was identified as chytrid, a fungal pathogen. No invasive species has caused comparable destruction: chytrid has affected hundreds of species worldwide and driven at least 90 to extinction, surpassing the impacts of cats, rats, and cane toads.

Dr Anthony Waddle’s research focuses on increasing frog resistance to chytrid through vaccination strategies, artificial “frog sauna” shelters that allow frogs to clear infections, and molecular approaches to engineer genetic resistance in endangered species. Crucially, his team not only develops these tools but deploys them in real time to protect declining wild populations. Most conservation biologists only dream of seeing their work make a difference in wild populations and this team is doing just that.

This event is part of Macquarie’s Discover Lecture Series, monthly talks suitable for ages 10 and up that offer inspiring insights and a glimpse into the technological advancements shaping our future.

Clean Energy: Why It Matters and What Comes Next – Discover Lecture Series with Macquarie
Organisation: Macquarie University
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus
Date: July 23, 2026

Clean energy systems such as solar, wind, and biomass are often presented as the answer to climate change. While they aim to reduce pollution, they must also deliver reliable and affordable energy for everyday life, powering homes, transport, and industry without disruption. If clean energy is so promising, why haven’t we fully switched to it yet? The answer lies in the practical challenges of performance, safety, and scale that must be solved before new energy technologies can replace the systems we rely on today.

In this talk, Associate Professor Fatemeh Salehi explores how engineering helps address these challenges, turning clean energy ideas into real-world solutions. This talk explains how understanding what affects performance, and identifying safety issues early, can make clean energy systems work at large scale. Through this lens, she provides insight into how research supports the transition from promising concepts to energy solutions that can meet future needs.

This event is part of Macquarie’s Discover Lecture Series, monthly talks suitable for ages 10 and up that offer inspiring insights and a glimpse into the technological advancements shaping our future.
