Staff Spotlight – Miss Bridie Carter

We welcome Bridie Carter to our MLC Junior School community, joining the team as Junior IT Service Engineer. Bridie previously worked in IT at Shore School in North Sydney and holds a degree in Game Design from Torrens University. Alongside her work in IT, Bridie is a creative individual with a strong interest in art and illustration. She enjoys illustrating as a hobby and hopes to one day illustrate a children’s book. In her spare time, she also enjoys spending time with her cats and tending to her growing collection of plants. She is looking forward to supporting staff and students by ensuring reliable, effective technology across the Junior School and contributing positively to the School community.

Wishing all our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other significant women in our lives a very Happy Mother’s Day this Sunday.

URSTRONG at MLC School Webinar

Wednesday 20 May 2026 from 6pm-7.15pm, Year 1 to Year 6

We invite all Year 1 to Year 6 families to join our URSTRONG ‘The Language of Friendship’ online workshop. Every two years we run a workshop for parents and their daughters so understand how to complement what we are doing at School and see how useful these strategies and ideas can be used at home.

A letter was sent to all Year 1 to Year 6 parents via the MLC School app, earlier this week – click here to view the letter which includes the link to join ON THE DATE of the webinar.

Our School’s mission includes words such as ‘fearless thinkers’, ‘moral courage’, ‘agents of change’ and ‘Dare to Be More.’ And we actually work very hard at bringing this Mission to life on a daily basis in the Junior School.

One way we work on this, in the Junior School, is through our URSTRONG program. URSTRONG recognises that friendships are everything to young people. It aims to help your daughter with ‘kid-friendly concepts that help kids establish and maintain healthy relationships, manage conflict with kindness and increase their overall resilience.’ https://urstrong.com/

URSTRONG provides practical relationship strategies for our girls to develop positive social skills as well as manage their friendships when things go wrong (and they do – such is the nature of any relationship). It also gives our girls a common language which is clear to everyone and assists with communication during ‘friendship fires’ (problems).

URSTRONGis based on four friendship facts:

  1. No friendship is perfect.
  2. Every friendship is different.
  3. Trust and Respect are the two most important qualities of a friendship.
  4. Friendships change… and that’s OK!

The program also teaches what is a healthy relationship. This is so important for your daughters. Understanding that relationships can be unhealthy and being able to identify actions to take to change this or remove oneself from the situation stands the girls in good stead for the rest of their lives.

Finally, a process for dealing with problems, called ‘friendship fires’ is also taught. Being empowered to deal with small friendship problems themselves give our girls confidence to solve other problems they may face. It also builds resilience and the ability to grow through solving problems themselves. However, there is also a backup for when an adult is needed to help solve an issue, using a ‘comeback statement’ and going to seek the help of an adult. I explain to the girls that dobbing is when you tell on someone with the aim of getting them in trouble and that reporting to an adult about a problem has the aim of getting help to solve a problem. There is a big difference!

If you have any questions or wish to know more about URStrong please go to https://urstrong.com/, There is an excellent parent portal you can sign up for which has many resources which I refer to often. What I love about the portal is that it talks about parents as a friendship coach – it’s such a good analogy!

I hope the session and the parent portal are useful for you to support your daughters in this sometimes-confusing world of friendships.

Happy Mother’s Day from our Junior School Artists!

Happy Mother’s Day from our Junior School Artists!

All week, our Junior School girls have been creating messages of love to their Mothers, making drawings, writing poetry and then carefully cutting them and adding them to our tree. Thank you to all the Dads and Mums who helped too.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day celebrating these special people in our families.

Pre-Kindergarten Meet Year 5 Buddies

Pre-Kindergarten Meet Year 5 Buddies

On Tuesday, the Pre-Kindergarten students were so excited to meet their Year 5 buddies from 5P, Ms Peterson’s class. Year 5 were welcomed into the Pre-Kindergarten studio and they were paired with two to three Pre-Kindergarten students.

Buddies is a wonderful opportunity for students to build connections across year levels, fostering a sense of belonging, confidence, and community within the school. The Pre-Kindergarten students thoroughly enjoyed showing their buddies around the studio, proudly introducing different areas of our learning space and inviting them to explore a variety of activities together.

It was lovely to see the students engaging in shared play experiences, with the Year 5 girls supporting, guiding, and joining in with enthusiasm. We look forward to continuing to build these special relationships each fortnight, throughout the year.

Year 5 Environmental Leaders Join Round Square Show

Year 5 Environmental Leaders Join Round Square Show

….. and Tell Zoom: Our Countries: ‘Our country’s natural wonders’

The opportunity to speak with students from around the world during a Show and Tell Zoom call was quite nerve-racking, as I had never previously connected with students from distant cities and countries, including Thailand, India, and Northern NSW. We shared several of NSW’s natural wonders, including Jenolan Caves, the Blue Mountains, the Kiama Blowhole, and Sydney Harbour, and we taught others about Australia and the unique environment in which we live, including native animals and plants, and our significant milestones. At other times, I may have declined this opportunity to speak about our state and country; however, this experience has encouraged me to embrace a challenging task that I would not otherwise have attempted. It was a privilege, in my role as Environment Captain, to represent MLC School on a Zoom call with students across the globe. Thank you, MLC School, for providing this wonderful opportunity, which I have greatly enjoyed.

– Alyssa Trinh (Year 5)

The Round Square Show and Tell Zoom call was a wonderful experience. Learning about other countries and their natural wonders was so interesting. It was fascinating to learn about India, Thailand and other parts of Australia. We talked about Sydney Harbour, the Blue Mountains, the Kiama Blowhole and the Jenolan Caves, natural wonders in NSW. My partner and I worked together to research our information, and we loved presenting it.

Year 6 Making Waves in PDHPE!

Year 6 Making Waves in PDHPE!

This term, Year 6 students are diving into a dynamic mix of swimming and health learning, building skills that will support them both in and out of the water.

In the pool, students are focusing on developing strong swimming technique while also learning vital water safety and lifesaving skills. They’ll practise how to recognise potential dangers, respond appropriately in different aquatic situations, and support others safely in an emergency. These sessions are all about building confidence, awareness, and practical skills that students can carry with them for life.

Back in the classroom, students are beginning by exploring nutrition and the importance of making healthy food choices to support their energy, growth, and overall wellbeing. They will also develop an understanding of physical activity, including the benefits of staying active and the factors that can influence participation.

Overall, this term supports students in becoming more confident, informed, and proactive about their health and safety. Whether they’re improving their strokes in the pool or making positive lifestyle choices, Year 6 are setting themselves up for a healthy, active future!

From the Author

I believe the best writing comes from lived experience and connects deeply with the reader. Many people at one time or another will have felt excluded. We all long to belong. It is particularly true of young people who are beginning to build relationships outside of family, taking their first steps to becoming social beings.

Stories afford readers a safe space to explore their own feelings, question the world around them and empathise with others. This is why I entered the WestWords Picture Book Manuscript competition in response to the theme of Belong. The story follows an arc from exclusion to inclusion but does so in a child friendly way. I wanted to make the words dance with each other, evoking feelings, sparking curiosity and delight, while Freya’s images link the abstract concepts to familiar, adorable characters with which the reader can build a relationship.

My love of children’s literature spans decades. As a book reviewer, Teacher and Teacher Librarian I have had the privilege and joy of passing that love onto future generations. Having completed a Masters in Writing and Children’s Literature I know what young people are passionate to read and am humbled that I now have brought a story from conception to reality, that will sit in our library bookshelves among the books that I love and have read so many times.

Happy reading!

Mother’s Day

Wishing everyone a lovely Mother’s Day on Sunday. Of course, Mother’s Day can mean different things to each of us. It may be a time of joy, gratitude, reflection or remembrance. Whether you are a mother, a grandmother, a caregiver, a mentor, or someone who offers love and support in quiet and powerful ways, today we acknowledge you.

I acknowledge those who are with us, those we remember, and those for whom today may be complex or bittersweet. Thank you for the kindness, strength and compassion you bring to the lives of others every day and I wish everyone a day of appreciation, connection and care.

I am looking forward to seeing the MLC School community on Sunday at the Mother’s Day Classic. If you cannot make it but you would like to make a donation to our team, you can do so here.

Professional Learning Teams

On Wednesday afternoon this week, our Senior School teachers were hard at work establishing their plans for Professional Learning. Melissa McMahon, Head of Learning and Teaching and Amy Murphy, Director of Professional Practice have been doing a huge amount of work to make this happen and our teachers are certainly inspired to unpack our ‘Puzzle of Practice / Strategy /Research’.

I am lucky enough to have joined a team to develop further research into the benefits of Girls’ Education. With MLC School being a leader in this space, both historically 140 years ago, and still today with our Principal, Lisa Moloney chairing the board of the Independent Girls’ School Association (IGSA) we are certainly well placed to lean into this challenge and enhance our practice.

In our first session, as we started to compiled and discuss readings, we read from the Sydney Morning Herald from 2023 ‘The decision to send my daughters to an all-girls school came down to one reason’ which you can read here. This article evoked great discussions within our group about the power of girls’ schools to provide a place for our girls to step up, take up space and develop their own agency. Thank you to Melissa McMahon, Head of Learning and Teaching, and Candace Robertson, Head of Languages, for leading our team and facilitating some great learning.

Year 7

Year 7

Another fruitful week for Year 7! We had the Parent/Teacher interviews on Monday accompanied by an information session to understand the Luminary focus on Courage this term, and to introduce the Year 7 camp to all parents and carers. I would like to thank all the families and carers for their time during this busy day.

Click here for the Year 7 Parent Information Evening Presentation. The presentation has also been added to Omnia on the Year 7 page here.

Of course, I must mention the Year 7 camp, and how quickly it is approaching. How exciting! I can feel the excitement in the air in every MLC School hall. A gentle reminder to all parents and carers to please complete the Year 7 Land’s Edge Medical, Consent and Waiver forms. These forms can be completed through the Land’s Edge Parent Portal which can be accessed here: https://www.landsedge.com.au/2026mlcyear7-studentportal.

Parents and carers must also provide permission through Omnia, the parent portal. Please note that this is on top of the Land’s Edge requirements.

We have now reached out to all families and carers of students who might benefit from additional support, and we would like to encourage you to reach out to us if your daughter needs support, especially if they have had a recent injury that we are not aware of.

Year 7 has also had their first session with their Big Sisters this week and many fun activities were organised by the Year 11 girls to entertain the lovely Year 7 students. We even had a fashion parade of dresses made with toilet paper!

I must also mention the way last week ended, with Back to College Day assembly to celebrate the 140th year anniversary of MLC School. We had a fashion parade showing the different uniforms used at MLC School in the past decades and the Year 7 students looked like professionals!

Finally, I would like to say that every week I will post a little fun challenge on the Year 7 CANVAS page. School can be hard sometimes, with many deadlines, lessons, assessments and many other things. These little fun challenges can be seen as a time to have a laugh and relieve stress. What is life without a little bit of fun after all?!

Year 8

Year 8

Week 3 was our first full 5 day week of the term, and it was another busy week! On Monday Year 8 had Anna Michalopoulos, the Head of Counselling. She spoke to the cohort about friendship and how to navigate challenging friendships. It was very useful and I know many of the students found it helpful.

On Wednesday we had our first Year 7 – Year 9 Meeting in the gym, and was a wonderful event run by the Middle Years Leaders. We aim to hold these once a term, and in no time it will be Year 8 becoming Year 9 and our new Middle Years Leaders! And on Thursday Year 8 had Big Sister Little Sister, always a highlight. It’s been great to see these vertical connections continuing to build and helping our students find broader connections.

Week 4 (starting Monday 11 May 2026) sees a couple of assessments and the introduction of the Year 8 Immersion, which I know the girls are very excited to hear about.

Have a lovely weekend, and please reach out to the Luminary or myself if you have any concerns.

Year 9

Year 9

It has been a busy and positive week for our Year 9 students, and I’m pleased to share a few highlights that have allowed them to step away from academics and assessments and enjoy the broader life of the school.

Last Friday, it was wonderful to come together for our 140 Year Birthday Celebrations. The assembly was a fantastic occasion and a meaningful way to acknowledge our School’s history and community spirit. One of the highlights was a fashion parade showcasing previous versions of our School uniforms – thank you to the brave Year 9 students who volunteered to take part and brought the parade to life.

On Wednesday, we held our first Year 7 – Year 9 Meeting, led by our Middle Years leaders together with Sophie Winnall, (Year 12) School Vice Captain (Year 6 to Year 9) SRC and Service. They created a welcoming and engaging atmosphere, including a fun ‘guess the Middle Years leader’ activity using baby photos. The meeting also featured a Q&A panel where Year 7 and Year 8 students could ask questions and learn more about the Cadet Program and Urban Challenge camp. It was a fantastic opportunity for our student leaders to strengthen their presentation skills and build confidence speaking in front of a crowd.

Year 9 students also enjoyed a special presentation from Rosemary Mula, grandmother of Victoria Lacchia-Schmidt in Year 9, who spoke to the year group about the Commonwealth Games. Rosemary shared her experience volunteering with teams from Kiribati, Tonga, Malta, the British Virgin Islands and Australia, and reflected on the joy that comes from volunteering and being part of a team. She also offered an inspiring message about following your passion and holding onto your dreams, even when obstacles arise.

Year 10

Year 10

It’s been a more settled week for Year 10 after the busyness of last week with the Anzac Service and the 140th Birthdsay celebrations.

In Academic Care this week, Year 10 attended a digital skills workshop on using Canva, with Marianna Carlino, our Head of eLearning. The girls offered interesting insights and had solid previous knowledge about this great resource. Another workshop will take place later this term to refine and further develop these skills for their academic work. Chapel service on Tuesday was with Year 12 and Rev Vinnie Ravetali, the focus being on Mother’s Day and the role of important women in our lives.

Next week Year 10 will be completing a pulse survey on their Core subjects, as student voice and insight provide valuable reflections for us to develop our curriculum and reflect on student engagement. Also, next week is a special Year 10 excursion as a follow up on our study in Term 1 of the Holocaust in History. The students will attend workshops and hear from a Holocaust survivor about their story and journey. Please ensure that the permission note for your daughter has been signed via Omnia and that the girls wear full winter uniform for the day, including blazer. Details on the day have been shared through the girls’ History teachers and on Omnia. The girls will return to school for a detailed reflection and feedback session.

Congratulations to the Year 10 Mock Trial students for progressing to the next round. Well done to Melisande Pitman, Sabine Rezainia, Xanthe Johnson, Hemani Ramesh, Tehya Sivanesarajah, Darcy Costello and Elizabeth Faraj. The group is growing and we have a record number of Year 10 students participating. The next round is against Fort Street High School, and we wish everyone the best of luck.

If you have any academic concerns about your daughter’s progress, please check in with your daughter’s class teacher. For wellbeing and pastoral care concerns, please contact your daughter’s Luminary and myself on sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au or 02 87419736. I am available Monday to Friday for on-site meetings, Teams meetings or a phone call.

Year 11

Year 11

This week, Year 11 spent Luminary time with their Year 7 Little Sisters, sharing practical tips and advice as the Year 7 students prepare for their first Senior School camp. These sessions are an important part of our Pastoral Care program and provide valuable opportunities for Year 11 students to model leadership, reassurance and guidance as their younger students transition into Senior School experiences.

Thank you and congratulations to our Term 2 Luminary Representatives. These students assist with organising and leading Luminary sessions within their groups alongside their Luminary teacher. I particularly want to acknowledge those students who have taken on this responsibility again, and I appreciate their ongoing commitment to supporting their Luminary group.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science: Where Movement Meets Science

Sports, Exercise and Health Science: Where Movement Meets Science

From 2026, IB Sports, Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) continues to offer students a rigorous and contemporary scientific exploration of human health, physical activity and performance. The course is organised around three interconnected areas of study: exercise physiology and nutrition, biomechanics, and sports psychology and motor learning, with students encouraged to make meaningful connections across these domains.

Learning is grounded in authentic sporting and health contexts, such as analysing how energy systems contribute to sprinting and endurance performance, examining the biomechanics of technique and injury prevention in activities including swimming, athletics and team sports, or exploring how motivation, anxiety and feedback influence skill acquisition and performance.

A defining feature of the 2026 course is its emphasis on conceptual learning, requiring students to transfer understanding across topics and apply scientific principles to unfamiliar scenarios rather than rely on memorisation. This approach is embedded through the SEHS Internal Assessment, which is worth 24% of the final IB grade and requires students to design, conduct and evaluate an individual scientific investigation using primary data.

For Year 11 students, the Internal Assessment begins with an engaging and highly practical blood pressure investigation that brings the science of exercise to life. As part of the Year 11 SEHS Internal Assessment this year, students investigated changes in systolic blood pressure by comparing cardiovascular responses to static exercise (wall sits) and dynamic exercise (star jumps), enabling them to analyse recovery patterns and explain differences using physiological principles. Students explore how the cardiovascular system responds to different types of movement by comparing blood pressure changes during dynamic exercise, such as star jumps, and static exercise, including wall sits. Worth a significant proportion of the final assessment, this investigation allows students to experience the full scientific process – from preparing participants and collecting real physiological data to analysing trends and explaining outcomes using scientific reasoning. The task is active, collaborative and closely connected to real‑world health and performance, making it a highlight of the course and a powerful introduction to scientific inquiry in SEHS.

The current Year 12 cohort will be the first students in the southern hemisphere to sit the final examinations for this redeveloped course, marking an important milestone in the subject’s evolution. Through scientific inquiry and applied investigation, students develop practical laboratory and fieldwork skills, apply statistical analysis, and critically evaluate the quality and limitations of evidence.

SEHS is well suited to students with a curiosity about the human body, movement and wellbeing, as well as those who enjoy scientific thinking and problem solving. Students do not need to be highly skilled in sport to succeed, as the course focuses on scientific inquiry, data analysis and conceptual understanding rather than athletic performance.

As such, SEHS offers an academically rigorous and accessible science pathway that supports a wide range of learners and interests within the senior curriculum.

Year 12

Year 12

This week, Year 12 took some time to reflect on recent feedback and think about their next steps. Students used Luminary to help set goals, and on Tuesday David Posker-Hill, Acting Director of Studies –Year 11 to Year 12 and Marianna Carlino, IB Coordinator, shared some encouraging strategies for using feedback to keep moving forward positively.

During Chapel on Wednesday, it was fantastic to see Ella Hu, Chapel Captain, Grace Farrow, Spirit Captain, alongside Year 12 musicians in the Chapel Strings Band and helping to bring a wonderful service to life. Rev Vinnie focused on a clear, positive message regarding looking out for and showing appreciation to our mothers and other significant care givers – not just this week – but every week.

Congratulations to our Year 12 Italian ab initio students on completing the course. They sat their final examinations this week, marking a significant milestone of their Year 12 experience. Thank you to Erika Pieri, Teacher – Languages, Marianna Carlino and Candace Robertson, Head of Department – Languages, for their wonderful support throughout.

On Wednesday evening, the Music department hosted the Band Soiree in Potts Hall. It was wonderful to hear about the amazing performances of Year 12 students. I trust you all enjoyed performing and supporting each other for an audience of family and friends!

Thursday saw Year 12 join with their Little Sisters from Year 8 for a morning of fun, connection and positive experiences. Mooramoora and Sutton Luminary groups even braved the cold weather for a healthy, competitive few rounds of dodge ball!

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to discuss your daughter’s engagement at school or how she is going with her learning.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Year 12 mothers and carers. Thank you for all you do!

Early Offer Opportunities for Year 12 Students

While the ATAR remains a key selection tool for university entry, it is not the only pathway into tertiary study. Many universities now offer early entry schemes that recognise a broader range of student achievements and strengths, including academic performance, leadership, community involvement and school recommendations.

These programs provide Year 12 students with the opportunity to receive a conditional university offer before final examinations. This can help reduce end-of-year pressure and give students greater confidence and clarity as they plan their next steps.

The Study Work Grow – Early Entry Guide is a valuable resource outlining the key details for each university’s early entry scheme, including eligibility criteria, benefits and application deadlines (where available), which vary across institutions.

Click here for the Early Entry Guide

Exploring these options early can help students stay ahead and make informed decisions about their future.

Students are also encouraged to visit the UAC website, which provides comprehensive information on available early offer schemes, key dates, assessment criteria and application processes.

For more information visit UAC Early Offer Schemes for Year 12 Students

Participating tertiary institutions also hold Early Entry information sessions. These events can be found under the Upcoming Events, Webinar and Course Information section of this newsletter.

A Conservation Biologist’s Dream of Improving Endangered Species Survival – Discover Lecture Series with Macquarie
Organisation: Macquarie University
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus
Date: May 21, 2026

In the late 20th century, scientists around the world became alarmed by the sudden collapse of frog populations. Decades later the cause was identified as chytrid, a fungal pathogen. No invasive species has caused comparable destruction: chytrid has affected hundreds of species worldwide and driven at least 90 to extinction, surpassing the impacts of cats, rats, and cane toads.

Dr Anthony Waddle’s research focuses on increasing frog resistance to chytrid through vaccination strategies, artificial “frog sauna” shelters that allow frogs to clear infections, and molecular approaches to engineer genetic resistance in endangered species. Crucially, his team not only develops these tools but deploys them in real time to protect declining wild populations. Most conservation biologists only dream of seeing their work make a difference in wild populations and this team is doing just that.

This event is part of Macquarie’s Discover Lecture Series, monthly talks suitable for ages 10 and up that offer inspiring insights and a glimpse into the technological advancements shaping our future.

Clean Energy: Why It Matters and What Comes Next – Discover Lecture Series with Macquarie
Organisation: Macquarie University
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus
Date: July 23, 2026

Clean energy systems such as solar, wind, and biomass are often presented as the answer to climate change. While they aim to reduce pollution, they must also deliver reliable and affordable energy for everyday life, powering homes, transport, and industry without disruption. If clean energy is so promising, why haven’t we fully switched to it yet? The answer lies in the practical challenges of performance, safety, and scale that must be solved before new energy technologies can replace the systems we rely on today.

In this talk, Associate Professor Fatemeh Salehi explores how engineering helps address these challenges, turning clean energy ideas into real-world solutions. This talk explains how understanding what affects performance, and identifying safety issues early, can make clean energy systems work at large scale. Through this lens, she provides insight into how research supports the transition from promising concepts to energy solutions that can meet future needs.

This event is part of Macquarie’s Discover Lecture Series, monthly talks suitable for ages 10 and up that offer inspiring insights and a glimpse into the technological advancements shaping our future.

From the Principal

Last week’s 140th anniversary celebrations culminated with the annual Alumnae Awards on Friday night and reunions for those Old Girls marking significant anniversaries since leaving the School on Saturday. Such events remind us that each and every one of our students, current and former is part of the long history of MLC School

The 2026 Alumnae Award winners yet again demonstrate the powerful contribution that so many of our Old Girls go on to make in their communities. They also serve as important role models for our current students, and it was delightful to see hear the animated conversations between the current students who attended the dinner and the award winners.

Congratulations to.

Vanessa Baker (1992) – Alumnae Award for Sporting Achievement

Olympian Vanessa Baker represented Australia in the 10-metre platform diving event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. She also competed at two Commonwealth Games (one in 1990, when she was in Year 10 at MLC School) and many national and international championships.

She began her diving career at the age of 6, and by the age of 8 she had won her first State Gold Medal for the 1 metre board event. At the age of 11 she won her first National Medal and continued to gain medals in subsequent National Championships.

Over the course of her diving career, Vanessa represented Australia on all board levels (1 metre, 3 metre and Platform) and accumulated 68 Gold medals: 3 International, 23 National and 42 State – the highest medal tally of any Australian diver.

Elisabeth Baraka (Ford, 1994) – Alumnae Award for Social Welfare and Impact

Elisabeth is a woman who has formed her own version of success – choosing job satisfaction over salary by working in areas she finds meaningful and interesting.

She has spent more than 25 years as a public interest lawyer and non-profit manager, and has worked internationally on human rights, corporate accountability, rule of law, and sustainable development. Currently, she is the COO at the Australian Centre for Corporate Responsibility.

Elisabeth’s career has been focused on promoting justice, economic opportunity, and human dignity through the rule of law.

Janu Dhayanathan (2000) – Alumnae Award for Social Welfare and Impact

Janu is a passionate advocate for inclusion, disability awareness and wellbeing, whose courage in sharing her lived experience with neurofibromatosis has transformed the lives of thousands of Australians.

Her advocacy spans body positivity, mental health, gender equality, and cultural stigma – particularly for women in the South Asian community who have been taught to stay silent.

She is also an Ambassador for the Children’s Tumour Foundation – her inaugural campaign raised over $16,000 in a single month.

Janu embodies the MLC School spirit of resilience and service – not merely overcoming adversity but transforming it into purpose.

Gillian Foster (Thomson, 1994) – Alumnae Award for Sporting Achievement

Gillian started soccer at age nine and was a sports star at MLC School from the beginning. Selected for the Australian Team, The Matildas, for the 2002 Australia Cup against South Korea, Gillian went on to play 39 times for Australia between 2002 and 2005.

She was a member of the Australian team at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the winning Australian team at the 2003 OFC Women’s Championship.

In 2004, Gillian represented Australia in Soccer at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Professor Dr Virginia Hood (1963) – Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement and Philanthropic Endeavours

Professor Dr Virginia Hood MBBS, MPH, MACP, FRACP, FRCPEd, is a highly regarded and accomplished physician, educator, and medical leader whose career has spanned clinical practice, academic medicine, healthcare advancement, and professional leadership at the highest levels.

At the University of Vermont, where she served as Professor of Medicine, she built a distinguished academic and clinical career in the field of nephrology.

Her commitment to professional service and leadership saw her serving as president of the American College of Physicians, the largest medical specialty organisation in the USA.

In 2009, Virginia donated $925,000 to the Charles Perkins Centre, in honour of her partner Dr H. Lawrence (Larry) McCrorey.

Celine (Seo Young) Kang (2018) – Young Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement and Cultural Contribution

Celine Kang is an educator, arts leader, and concert pianist whose work sits at the intersection of performance, education, and cultural leadership.

Currently, she is the Acting Assistant Director of Music at MLC School, the Director of the award-winning GNT Education Group, the Chair of Public Relations and Strategic Planning for the Australia Chapter of Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, for which she received a (Korean) Presidential Citation, and is also the Artistic Director of Koralia Entertainment.

As a concert pianist, Celine has performed at Carnegie Hall, Musikverein Vienna, Sydney Opera House, and in October this year, she will be performing at the Sydney Town Hall.

Assoc Professor Dr Glynis Ross (1973) – Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement

Associate Professor Dr Glynis Ross MBBS (Hons), FRACP, is an Associate Professor at the Central Clinical School of the University of Sydney, in both the Discipline of Medicine and the Discipline of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

Her major clinical and research interests are diabetes in pregnancy, type 1 diabetes, diabetes technology, and inpatient diabetes management.

Her passion and energy for advocating for people with diabetes, and for improving related health services and support through Diabetes Australia, the Australian Diabetes Society, the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society, and the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation, have greatly improved outcomes for countless individuals.

Shirley (Xue Ni) Song (2007) – Young Alumnae Award for Cultural Contribution and International Achievement

In the cut-throat and traditionally male-dominated industry of film and television music composition, Shirley is a trailblazer whose achievements have helped pave the way for greater inclusion and representation.

She has composed for Netflix, Apple TV+, DreamWorks, Amazon Prime, Pixar, HBO, Disney, CBS and for all four of the Guillermo del Toro-created animation series: Tales of Arcadia: Trollhunters, 3Below, Wizards, and Rise of the Titans. Her latest film, Slanted, premiered at SXSW, where it won the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Award.

By demonstrating that perseverance and skill can overcome systemic obstacles, Shirley continues to influence young women to believe in their potential and strive for change within the industry.

Lauren Stefanou (2003) – Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement

Lauren is a purpose-driven leader with broad experience across the legal assistance, community, and public sectors.

She is currently the Principal Solicitor at the Aboriginal Legal Service NSW/ACT, a proud Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation, and the primary legal assistance provider to Aboriginal people in NSW and the ACT.

She is also a Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Law and Justice at UNSW, where she lectures in criminal law and procedure, sentencing, and related electives.

Lauren retrained as a lawyer after a career in media. This decision was driven by a desire to work more closely with people and to contribute in more direct ways to speaking truth to power.

Professor Ramona Vijeyarasa (1999) – Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement and Social Welfare and Impact

A globally recognised scholar activist, Professor Dr Ramona Vijeyarasa PhD, LLM, LLB, BA is one of Australia’s leading voices on women’s rights and gender equality through law.

She bridges the gap between research and action in ways few scholars have achieved by her ability to translate complex legal and human rights concepts into tools, frameworks, and policy interventions that can be used by governments and practitioners.

In March this year, Ramona became the inaugural Chair in Gender and the Law at the UTS Faculty of Law.

Ramona is driven by a powerful sense of justice that has shaped her entire professional life and her exceptional contributions to public life.

Christina White (2009) – Young Alumnae Award for Professional Achievement and Social Welfare and Impact

Christina is a criminal lawyer and Fulbright Scholar who is currently a managing lawyer at the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) in Alice Springs.

During her studies, Christina interned at the Capital Post-Conviction Project of Louisiana in New Orleans, where she worked on petitions for clients on death row. Working with passionate lawyers who protect the rights of people facing execution inspired Christina to pursue a career focused on challenging systemic injustices within the legal system.

Her legal work focuses on the intersection of criminalisation, mental health, wealth inequality, and structural racism – she seeks to address the deeply rooted systemic issues that perpetuate cycles of incarceration and social inequality.

Christina’s career is a testament to her deep commitment to fairness.

Shortly the full bios of all these winners will be available on the MLC School website, I encourage you to read about previous award winners as well.

We were delighted to welcome back former Olympian and Matildas player Gillian Foster (Thomson 1994), an MLC School Old Girl whose sporting journey continues to inspire our community.

At our recent Back to College and Alumnae Awards Dinner, Gillian was honoured alongside an extraordinary group of Old Girls whose achievements reflect the breadth of talent, service and leadership that has long defined MLC School women.

In a gesture that speaks to the generosity of spirit that sits at the heart of our alumnae community, Gillian gave up her time to visit and support our senior football team. Her presence on the sidelines was a powerful reminder of what is possible when talent is matched with tenacity and when experienced athletes invest back into the next generation.

Gillian also shared some of the highlights of her career, including the unforgettable experience of walking onto the pitch at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the honour of representing Australia as an Olympian. Her reflections on elite competition and national pride resonated strongly with our students, reminding them that big moments are built on years of commitment, courage and belief.

For our players, it was a special opportunity to connect with an Old Girl who has competed on the world stage and to see, first-hand, the enduring connection between MLC School and its Alumnae. Moments like these strengthen belief, build pride, and reinforce the value of teamwork, discipline and resilience.

We extend our sincere thanks to Gillian for returning to MLC School and for championing our students. We also congratulate all Alumnae Awards recipients and nominees, thank you for continuing to shape the story of MLC School and for inspiring today’s girls to dream boldly and lead with courage.

Term 2 Prayer Breakfast – MLC School Community

On Wednesday morning, members of the MLC School community gathered for this term’s Prayer Breakfast, bringing together staff, parents and Old Girls in a spirit of gratitude, reflection and shared purpose. The gathering acknowledged the School’s 140th anniversary, as well as the upcoming celebration of Mother’s Day.

The gathering offered a meaningful time of connection and reflection, honouring the relationships that have shaped MLC School across generations…Rev Vinnie, drawing on John 14:15–21, gave emphasis to Jesus’ words: ‘I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to help you and be with you forever…I will not leave you as orphans.’

This promise of God’s abiding presence invited the community to consider how love is lived out through care, faithfulness and everyday acts of compassion within families, friendships, relationships and school life.

Mother’s Day was acknowledged with warmth and inclusivity, recognising mothers, caregivers and all who nurture others, while holding space for the varied experiences this day can bring. This inclusive approach ensured that all present felt seen and respected, reflecting the School’s commitment to compassion and belonging.

The Prayer Breakfast served not only as a time of spiritual reflection, but also as a meaningful opportunity to strengthen community bonds. Conversations shared over breakfast fostered connection between the school community, highlighting the continuity of the MLC School story across generations.

Together, the community gave thanks for MLC School’s rich history and looked ahead with hope, grounded in a shared commitment to step forward with courage, growth, integrity, respect, and compassion… trusting that the same God who has been faithful for 140 years, will remain faithful still.

Happy Mother’s Day to all Mums and Nurturers of our community!

Senior Chaplain

MLC School Colour Run

MLC School Colour Run

We’re excited to launch the 2026 MLC School Colour Run; a joyous community event we hold annually to raise much needed funds for the MLC School Sony Foundation Holiday Camp, a camp for children with additional needs.

The children (Campers) who attend the MLC School Sony Foundation Camp in December 2026 will be treated to inclusive time away from home full of thrilling and exciting adventures designed to help them grow in independence and confidence. They will be cared for in boarding-style accommodation at Land’s Edge, located at the picturesque Chowder Bay. Campers get to meet other children and make special connections with their Year 11 student companions who care for them for the 4-day, 3-night residential experience.

The flexible camp program allows campers to participate in activities where people understand and cater for their needs. Camp activities include swimming and rafting at the beach, an excursion to a water park, a reptile show, a fancy-dress disco, art and crafts and so much more. In addition to the benefits for the children attending the camp, there is a dual purpose of the program, providing much needed respite for the parents and siblings of these children, allowing them precious time to attend to their own needs. Our Year 11 volunteers who run the camp, supported by MLC School’s team of dedicated, experienced teaching and medical staff, will quickly learn about the challenges and demands involved in caring for a child with additional needs in a life-changing experience for all involved.

The MLC School Colour Run event details:

Friday 26 June 2026
1pm to 3pm
Burwood Park

Who can take part:

Students from Kindergarten to year 12 will participate on the day. Pre-kindergarten students are able to participate under the supervision of a parent or carer.

More details will be available via Omnia soon.

Please follow the instructions below to register your daughter to raise funds and participate. By raising funds, she will not only support the camp, but can earn awesome prizes.

All donations received for the Colour Run will go directly to funding the camp activities to ensure our campers have the best possible experience. We are looking forward to a great, colourful MLC School event!

These operate 3.30pm–6pm Monday to Thursday during term time.

Year 11 and Year 12 After-Hours Study Hub

Recognising the importance of a conducive environment for focused study, MLC School has established a free after-hours Study Hub exclusively for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. Located on Level 3 of the Senior Centre, the Study Hub provides a quiet and supportive space where students can concentrate on their studies, complete assessments, and prepare for examinations under the supervision of experienced MLC School staff across many subject areas.

Key Features:

  • Experienced staff: Two teachers rostered each evening from different subject areas, to guide and assist students with their academic queries and provide valuable feedback.
  • Convenient location: Level 3 of the Senior Centre, providing easy access for Senior students.
  • Flexible hours: The study hub is open Monday to Thursday 3.30pm–6pm, allowing students to make the best use of their time outside regular school hours. Partial attendance is welcome.

We encourage all Year 11 and Year 12 students to take advantage of this excellent resource to enhance their learning experience and achieve their academic goals. The staff roster will be published in advance of each week in Audacia, the School newsletter. Study Hub+

Study Hub+

Term 2 2026 Study Hub+  – Fill in form

Study Hub+ is MLC School’s structured, pay‑per‑use after‑school study support program, designed for students in Year 7 to Year 12 who would benefit from more personalised academic guidance in a focused and supportive environment.

While the Study Hub provides a supervised space for independent study for Year 11 and Year 12, Study Hub+ offers a higher level of individualised, responsive support. Sessions are student‑led, allowing mentors to tailor assistance based on each student’s specific needs on the day. This may include consolidating class learning, clarifying assessment requirements, preparing for examinations, or developing effective and sustainable study routines.

Led by Program Coordinator Ela Huber, Study Hub+ is supported by a team of knowledgeable mentors, all of whom are pre‑service teachers or working towards a career in education. Most mentors are in the final stages of their undergraduate or Master of Teaching degrees and bring with them a strong depth of subject knowledge, alongside up‑to‑date, innovative and curriculum‑aligned resources. This ensures students receive guidance that is relevant and closely aligned with classroom expectations.

A key strength of Study Hub+ is the opportunity for students to work alongside a mentor, particularly when engaging with written tasks. Mentors can read through work with students, ask guiding questions, suggest improvements to structure, clarity and expression, and help students refine their ideas and arguments. While mentors are unable to mark work or provide grades, they can offer valuable feedback and editing support prior to submission, helping students better understand how to improve their work independently.

Mentors can support students with:

  • Revising and consolidating key concepts and class content
  • Examination preparation and revision strategies
  • Planning and organising assessments and study schedules
  • Reading through drafts alongside students and suggesting edits or refinements
  • Developing confidence, independence and effective study habits

Study Hub+ also plays an important role in supporting students in an era where AI is a valuable and encouraged tool at MLC School, but one that requires thoughtful, ethical and informed use. Students can sometimes over‑rely on AI when completing homework and assessments, which may leave them unsure about underlying concepts, task expectations or how to improve their own work.

At Study Hub+, mentors help reinforce the appropriate and ethical use of AI by guiding students to use these tools as a support for learning rather than a replacement for thinking. Mentors work with students to unpack questions, clarify concepts, check understanding and refine ideas, ensuring students remain actively engaged in their learning and confident in the work they submit.

Program Overview

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm–6pm (term time)
  • Location: Level 1, Senior Centre
  • Cost: $25 per session (2.5 hours) and charged to your daughter’s account at the end of term
  • Environment: Phone‑free zone to minimise distractions and promote positive study habits
  • Staffing: A minimum of two mentors per session, rotating to provide a range of subject expertise

Families are encouraged to register on a termly basis to support the development of consistent study routines, although weekly bookings remain available via Omnia and Audacia, the School e-newsletter. Students will receive a reminder email at approximately 2pm on their scheduled day confirming their session and assigned room.

Cancellation Policy

If your daughter is unable to attend a scheduled session, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to avoid being charged. In cases of illness where your daughter is absent from school, families will not be charged.

Private Lessons: A private lesson is a one‑on‑one coaching session between a player and a coach. It is fully tailored to the individual’s needs, focusing on technique, tactics, movement, or specific goals such as competition preparation or skill correction. Progress tends to be faster because the coach’s full attention is on one player.

  • Best for: Players wanting personalised coaching, rapid improvement, or targeted feedback.

SemiPrivate Lessons: Semi‑private lessons involve two players working with one coach. Players are usually of a similar standard and can practice together while still receiving individual feedback. This format balances personal input with shared drills and is often more cost-effective than private lessons.

  • Best for: Friends, siblings, or training partners at a similar level.

Group Lessons: Group lessons involve up to four players training together with one coach. This small group size allows for a strong balance between personalised feedback and interactive drills. Sessions focus on technical development, consistency, point play, and decision-making, while ensuring each player receives regular coach attention.

  • Best for: Players who enjoy learning in a social environment while still receiving quality, individual feedback.

Hot Shots: Hot Shots is a modified tennis program designed for young children up to six students, using smaller courts, lighter racquets, and low compression balls. Lessons focus on fun, coordination, and basic tennis skills through games and challenges, building confidence and a love for the sport.

  • Best for: Beginners, typically ages 4–10, who are new to tennis.
(Delivered in stages such as Orange, and Green.)

Squads: A squad session is a high-performance or development focused group training environment. Players are selected based on age, ability, or competitive level. Sessions are more intense and structured, often involving advanced drills, fitness, tactical play, and match simulation.

  • Best for: Tournament players and committed juniors aiming to compete or progress to higher levels or students that would like a more fun game-based learning experience

Football

This week the IGSA 18s Football Trials were held at Macquarie University, with more than 100 nominations and 60 trialists representing IGSA schools across Sydney.

MLC School was proudly represented by three students:

Congratulations to Felicity McCormick (Year 8), who was selected in the final IGSA team. This is a wonderful achievement and a testament to her hard work and talent. She will compete at NSW CIS championships next month,

Well done to all three students on their excellent performances.

Hockey

Hockey is back, and it’s better than ever! We have more students playing hockey than we have had for a long time, and we’re off to a flying start.

Two wins out of three for the start of our IGSA campaign, including a huge 6-1 victory for our MLC03 side. Big shoutout to Katie Zhang (Year 8) for her MLC School Hockey debut and scoring 5 goals! It looks like we’re in for a fantastic season across the board. A huge well done also to MLC01 for a solid performance in MLC School’s first ever season in S01, the very top of the IGSA Hockey ladder!

Outside of IGSA, there have also been fantastic achievements. Alannah Ng (Year 8) (U15s) and Georgie Coxsedge (Year 10) (U19s) both competing at the CIS Hockey Championships; Alannah for the North Coast, and Georgie for IGSA. This is a seriously competitive competition to get selected for, and we are hugely proud of your efforts. An extra well done to Georgie, who was part of the IGSA team who won the overall championship, no small feat!

Last weekend was also the U14 State Cup, which we had three students compete at on a club level. Alannah Ng (Year 8), Remy Pereira (Year 7), and Anaahat Kahlon (Year 8). They all represented East Sydney, with Alannah playing in Div 1, plus Remy and Anahaat in Div 3. It wasn’t to be Sydney East’s Div 1 side this year, with a fiercely competitive competition. However, Remy and Anahaat went all the way, to pick up the Div 3 Grand Final trophy!

Stay tuned for more hockey updates as the season goes on!

Cultural Enrichment, Pandas and Shopping on the China 2026 Tour!

Cultural Enrichment, Pandas and Shopping on the China 2026 Tour!

大家好!Hello everyone! In the school holidays from 6 April to 18 April, nine Chinese students and three teachers went on the China Tour 2026 – something we’d been looking forward to ever since year 7! The trip was an amazing experience, visiting four cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Xi’an.

We spent the first two days of our trip in Shanghai! From standing at the top of the second tallest tower in the world, to racing down Nanjing Road towards the gi – normous pop mart (our bank account dwindling), Shanghai was a city full of vibrancy and liveliness.

Unanimously, we all agreed that Beijing was our favourite city. Spending three days here, we got to see a huge glimpse of the rich culture of China – walking down the Great Wall(长城)taking in the incredible mountains, and seeing the beautiful palace and gardens of the Forbidden City (故宫). But what we really appreciated about Beijing was the community: whether it was playing hacky sack and watching all the locals join in and cheer us on or making dumplings with a local family, we truly felt like we were a part of the city.

Our next stop was Chengdu, where we had been really looking forward to seeing pandas for the first time (熊猫很可爱!Pandas are really cute!).  We really deepened our understanding of culture here, experiencing the fulfilment of climbing up the steps and seeing the giant buddha, having a Sichuan cooking class and learning to cook 麻婆豆腐 (mapo tofu) and 宫保鸡丁 (kung pao chicken), and buying LOTS of panda plushies!

To round off the trip, we visited Xi’an, historically being the capital to 13 dynasties. As you may have seen on the Vivi screens around the School, we dressed up in 汉服 (traditional Han clothes), having fun taking photos with our friends to capture all the traditions and memories of the trip. Ending the tour with the terracotta warriors was really culturally enriching, and getting to see Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s work, brought what we had learnt over the years to life.

Overall, this trip was an unforgettable experience – learning so much and making so many lasting memories and friendships. From not even knowing some of the students on tour to endlessly talking, laughing, and growing with them, we all loved the experience.

A huge thanks to Ms Wang, Ms Collins, and Ms Robertson for organising the tour,  and to our tour guides: Sandra (Shanghai), Victoria (Beijing), Fen (Chengdu), and MJ (overall and Xi’an)! We would not have had such a great time without you!

我们希望再次去中国! – We hope to visit China again!

Debating and Public Speaking Success to Start the Term

Debating and Public Speaking Success to Start the Term

ISDA Debating Achievements

Our Debating and Oratory students have begun the term with great determination and focus. In the ISDA competition, all eight of our teams successfully qualified for the Octo Finals, which is a significant accomplishment considering there are 32 schools competing in total.

The Octo Finals are conducted over a two-week draw. Last Friday, four of our teams competed for the chance to progress to the Quarter Finals. Our youngest debaters, the Primary A team from Year 6, achieved an outstanding victory.

  • Emma Mo
  • Florence Everitt
  • Olivia Wang
  • Erin Chen
  • Nina Bai

At the other end of the spectrum, our most senior and experienced group, the Senior A Year 12 team, secured a memorable win against their long-time rivals, Sydney Grammar, allowing them to progress to the Quarter Finals as well.

  • Harriet Hahn
  • Jordan Vo
  • Elena Sun
  • Elena Tulloch
  • Amelia Tchan

This coming Friday, the remaining four ISDA teams will have their opportunity to compete for a place in the Quarter Finals, hoping to join their peers in the next stage of the competition.

Public Speaking Award Success

Competing in the finals in a debating team requires substantial resilience, but delivering a solo performance in the Public Speaking Award Local Finals is even more demanding. On Monday, our Year 11 student, Meena Kanthathas, represented our school at Strathfield Girls High School, facing off against 15 other Senior students. Meena presented an impressive eight-minute prepared speech, followed by a three-minute impromptu speech. Her outstanding performance in both sections saw her win through to the Regional Final, which will take place in a few weeks.

While managing our ongoing competitions, we also initiated our efforts to excel in two additional debating tournaments this week: the IPSHA Primary Debating Competition, featuring four teams, and the Archdale All-Girls School Competition, consisting of twelve teams. So we are a very busy but happy group of co-curricular students as you can see in the photos.

Cadets – 2026 AFX Reflection

Cadets – 2026 AFX Reflection

The 2026 Annual Field Exercise at Eungai Creek was the best AFXs I have been on to date. This AFX was an experience that allowed me to gain hands-on training in navigational skills and transmission procedures. From the beginning, I felt excited because this was the first time platoons were separated by schools, allowing stronger connections and a greater sense of community. I was especially looking forward to the treks, as I hoped to put my navigational skills into practice.

At the beginning of AFX, we arrived at a campsite with particularly difficult terrain. This introduced me to a new strategy for setting up a hootchie by tying twine between two trees, which turned out to be much easier than using hootchie poles. One of my favourite moments was when my platoon, F31, completed an activity that involved army crawling up a hill to find pieces of a code while trying not to be spotted by our CUO, Rebecca. This activity taught me the importance of teamwork, communication, and tactical thinking.

Overall, AFX was a valuable and rewarding experience. It taught me real-life skills and helped improve my physical fitness. Looking back, I especially appreciated my platoon’s morale, and I will miss the nights spent around the campfire, the treks filled with songs, and the tough moments my platoon and I can now laugh about together. This AFX was an unforgettable experience, and I am eagerly looking forward to the next one.

– LCPL Hannah Hunter (Year 10)

My experience on AFX was extremely rewarding, exciting and testing. I developed my friendships with the girls in my platoon and worked on my trekking skills. Through the treks we went on, the pink and red patrol, I learnt that my endurance was higher than I thought. I was able to learn how to read a map and a compass through the help of my sergeant and CUO, which was a valuable skill I left camp with. I enjoyed the campfires each night, eating the food and connecting with my classmates who I might not have talked to before. The friendships I left cadet camp with were an important part of my experience. While on camp, I enjoyed improving my skills of setting up a hootchie and remember the nights of sleeping in them very fondly. Overall, my cadet camp experience was extremely valuable, and I left with many important skills.

– LCPL Sabine Rezainia (Year 10)

My AFX experience was honestly one of the most memorable things I’ve ever done. At the beginning, I was a bit scared because I didn’t really know what to expect, but that quickly changed as I got more comfortable with everyone. It turned out to be so much fun!

One of the best parts of the whole experience was the campfires at night. Sitting together, talking and just enjoying the moment made us all feel so connected. It was during those times that we really bonded as a group and got to know each other better.

The treks were definitely challenging, and there were moments where it felt really tough, but we all supported each other and kept going. No one was left behind, and we constantly encouraged one another, which made such a difference. It really showed how strong we were as a team. The songs we created really helped me get through and it got my mind off the walking.

Kayaking was another highlight as it was so fun being out on the water together. The same thing happened with the high ropes. A lot of people were scared, but we all cheered each other on and helped build each other’s confidence

Overall, AFX showed me the importance of teamwork, encouragement, and stepping outside of your comfort zone. It brought us all closer together, and I’ll always remember the experiences and friendships we made.

– CDT Audrey Lazar (Year 9)

Cadet camp (AFX) was an amazing experience, that gave me many memories I will treasure forever. Parts may have been challenging, such as long treks that required a lot of determination, but the support that people showed each other along the way made it all worthwhile. I loved seeing people who struggled have a smile on their face at the end of the day at the campfire singalongs and activities like high ropes, zipline, and kayaking. Overall, camp was a surreal and extremely fun opportunity to get to know new people and challenge my limits.

– CDT Caitlin Ward (Year 9)

Going on cadet camp at the end of last term was an amazing experience and one of the best camps I’ve ever been on. It was genuinely so much fun but also pushed all of us in ways we didn’t expect. Over the few days we were away, we took part in a mix of activities that tested our morale, courage, and outdoor skills, as well as tasks that required us to think quickly and work together.

What made the camp stand out was how much we learned without even realising it at the time. Every activity taught us something useful, whether it was leadership, communication, problem‑solving, or just staying calm and working together when things got tough. Some parts were challenging, like the treks and the valley crossings, which forced us out of our comfort zones not just as individuals but as a platoon. But that made the whole experience more rewarding. We got to see what we were capable of, and it brought everyone closer as a group.

There were plenty of moments where we were tired, muddy, or trying to figure out what to do next, but we still had a lot of laughs and made so many unforgettable memories. Overall, the cadet camp was a great experience and something I’d happily do again.

– LCPL Grace Likely (Year 10)

Inner West, Parramatta and Sydney Eisteddfods Kick off this Weekend

Inner West, Parramatta and Sydney Eisteddfods Kick off this Weekend

We are very excited that the Inner West Eisteddfod, held in Burwood, commences this weekend with our younger students in the 5–7 years categories, who have been working incredibly hard in preparation for their performances.

The Speech and Drama Studio has proudly supported the Inner West Eisteddfod for the past 30 years. While participation in eisteddfods is not compulsory, we are thrilled to have over 200 entries this year. As our local eisteddfod, it provides a wonderful opportunity for MLC School students to engage with and represent in the wider Burwood community.

Our students are also participating in the Sydney and Parramatta Eisteddfods, which also begin this weekend and continue throughout May and June. The Ryde Eisteddfod will follow in July and August.

Speech and Drama Studio students are looking forward to proudly representing MLC School across a range of sections including:

  • Prepared Speech
  • Character Recital
  • Duologue and Scene
  • Set Prepared Reading
  • Verse Speaking
