From the Acting Head of Senior School

Welcome Back!

Welcome to Term 3!  I hope that your daughter has had a great first week back at school. I know many students were highly engaged with school during the break, with a huge array of camps, study sessions, and other activities running throughout the holidays. A huge thank you to the staff that made all these opportunities happen.

Today, we held a whole school NAIDOC Week assembly, led by our Director of Indigenous Education, Tim Lennon. As ever, it was very special to see our whole School come together for such an important moment of learning, reflection and recognition. The assembly provided an opportunity for students and staff to acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while also reminding us of the importance of listening, learning and continuing to build a school community grounded in respect and understanding.

Term 3 is always a busy, but joyful term, and there is much to look forward to as it gathers momentum. In the coming weeks we will begin the process of selecting our new student leadership team, an important opportunity for students to reflect on the kind of contribution they hope to make to the life of the School. At the same time, we will prepare to farewell our superb Class of 2026 as they move towards the final stages of their school journey.

Staffing News

Our wonderful Head of Science, Maryellen Ottaway, will retire at the conclusion of Term 3, 2026.

Maryellen has made a significant and lasting contribution to the Science Department and to MLC School over many years. She is a much-loved Chemistry teacher, known for her boundless energy, deep subject knowledge, passion for Science and genuine care for every student she teaches. We are deeply grateful for all that Maryellen has given to the School community and look forward to acknowledging her contribution more fully later in the term.

Australian Government Update – National Emergency Warning System

The Australian Government recently announced a national test scheduled for Monday 27 July at 2pm AEST. At this time, a test alert will be sent to all cellular devices in Australia. Devices will vibrate and play a siren-like warning sound for about 10 seconds, and an alert will appear on the screen.

Study Hub

Study Hub is a free after-school study program for our Year 11 and 12 students, which runs during term time, Monday to Thursday from 3.30pm to 6pm. Our first session for the term commences on Monday 27 July. Please see next week’s schedule below.
