John Locke Global Essay Competition

The John Locke Global Essay Competition was an amazing way for me to explore new ideas that I would not be presented with in a normal classroom setting. Questions range from “What would a cashless society look like?” to more controversial questions such as “Why is incest wrong?”

 

My own question was “What would criminal sentencing look like if judges and legislators accepted the theory of determinism?” I had a great time thinking about different perspectives amongst our society and drawing my opinions about this question. The main question that came up throughout my essay was the moral obligation of the judicial system in giving punishment to society or rehabilitating criminal offenders.

 

I found this competition very enjoyable and I encourage students to give it a go as I had so much fun doing this. Even if you are not an experienced writer, I think this is a good opportunity for every student.
