Discovering the magic and lessons of Pinocchio

Italian lessons are teaching more than just language and culture

This term, our Primary students embarked on a magical journey to Tuscany, Italy, through the classic tale of Pinocchio. While the famous wooden puppet captivated our young learners with his adventures, the story served as a powerful springboard for vital classroom discussions about this character and his choices.

At the heart of our exploration were three core values that resonate deeply with our school community: truthfulness, kindness and bravery.

Through Pinocchio’s famous growing nose, students learned that truthfulness is not just about avoiding trouble, but about building trust with family, teachers and friends. Our students reflected beautifully on how honesty keeps our hearts light and our relationships strong. The puppet’s journey also highlighted the power of kindness. Students analysed how Pinocchio’s selfish choices hurt those who loved him, particularly the devoted Geppetto. By contrasting these moments with the Blue Fairy’s compassion, our classes discussed how small acts of everyday kindness – like sharing and including others – can transform our school yard.

Finally, the dramatic rescue of Geppetto from the giant shark showed our students what true bravery looks like. Pinocchio’s courage proved that being brave means putting others first, even when we are scared. When Pinocchio finally becomes a real boy, it is because he chooses to be honest, kind and brave. We are incredibly proud of how our Primary students have taken these timeless lessons to heart, applying them to their own lives every day.
