Young scientists at work: National Science Week in Year 1!
Friday 21 August was filled with wonder as our Year 1 students stepped into the role of junior researchers for National Science Week. This year, our focus looked to the sky as we investigated the physics of light, colour and the sun’s impact on our environment.
Before jumping into hands-on testing, students practised critical predicting and hypothesising skills by analysing two central questions:
- What colours do you see when you look at a rainbow?
- How does the sun make rainbows?
To test their ideas, the children conducted investigations using two different light sources: natural sunlight focused through glass prisms and artificial light via torches.
Through this hands-on exploration, they discovered the concept of light refraction, learning that white light actually bends and separates into a magnificent spectrum of individual colours when passing through a different medium.
It was wonderful to see the students think, question, and experiment like realscientists, developing both their critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills.
