Year 4 Prayer and Mission Team: celebrating the Season of Creation

Our Year 4 Prayer and Mission Team recently led a whole-school prayer to mark the beginning of the Season of Creation, a special time in the Church calendar when Christians around the world are invited to pray, reflect and take action to care for God’s creation.

The World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation is celebrated each year on 1 September and begins the Season of Creation, which continues until 4 October, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi. The 2026 theme, ‘Living Water’, reminds us that water is a precious gift from God and an essential source of life for all living things.

During the prayer celebration, students reflected on the beauty of God’s creation and how we can be responsible stewards of our common home. The Prayer and Mission Team encouraged everyone to think about simple actions that can make a difference, such as saving water, reducing waste, recycling, caring for local wildlife and giving thanks to God for the gift of creation.

Caring for creation at home

Families can help care for our common home by:

  • turning off the tap while brushing teeth and keeping showers short
  • switching off lights and devices when they are not being used
  • using reusable drink bottles and lunch containers
  • reducing food waste and recycling correctly
  • planting flowers, herbs or vegetables at home
  • walking, riding a bike or using public transport when possible
  • taking time to thank God for the gift of creation through prayer.

A family challenge

This week, as a family, consider one simple action you can take to care for our common home. It might be a shorter-shower challenge, a lights-off hour, planting something together or having a no-food-waste day.

A prayer for creation

Dear God,
Thank you for our wonderful world.
Thank you for the bright sun, the tall trees, the blue oceans, and all the animals.
Help us to be good helpers who take care of the plants, water, and creatures.
Show us how to keep the Earth clean and beautiful.
Amen.
