Year 3

On Thursday 10 September, Year 3 students participated in an engaging Aboriginal incursion that immersed them in rich cultural learning and hands-on activities. The experience encouraged students to think critically about the effects of British Colonisation in Australia while deepening their understanding of how Aboriginal peoples lived before the arrival of Europeans.

Students began the day by exploring traditional watercraft, learning how First Nations peoples designed and used canoes for travel, hunting and survival on waterways. They then applied this knowledge by building their own mini canoe. This was followed by a shelter making session, where students discovered how Aboriginal peoples used natural materials from Country to meet their needs. A live didgeridoo performance became one of the standout moments of the day. Students learned about the instrument’s cultural significance and its traditional role in ceremony and celebration.This led into a storytelling session, where students explored Aboriginal perspectives, connection to Country and the passing down of knowledge through generations.

Students developed a deeper appreciation of their place within the local community and strengthened their ability to explain how significant individuals, groups and events have shaped the area over time.
