Year 5 English, HSIE and Science & Technology Project

Throughout this term, Year 5 students have been exploring Bright New World: Building a Better Planet as their mentor text in English. This engaging hybrid text combines the purposes of entertaining, persuading and informing, providing students with opportunities to analyse how authors use different text features and language techniques to communicate ideas effectively.

As their culminating assessment task, students are designing and creating their own multimodal websites. These websites will incorporate all three text purposes, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of informative, persuasive and imaginative writing while also developing their digital literacy skills.

Each student has selected an Australian national park to research in depth. Through their investigations, students are gathering information about the park’s unique natural features, environmental threats and conservation. This project also provides meaningful connections to learning in HSIE and Science and Technology. Students are exploring environmental events that have affected their chosen national park, such as bushfires, floods, droughts or severe storms, and examining how climate and weather patterns have influenced these events and the surrounding environment.

By combining English, Geography, Science and Technologies, students are developing their research, critical thinking and communication skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting Australia’s diverse natural environments. We look forward to sharing their innovative websites and showcasing the creativity, knowledge and problem-solving skills they have developed throughout this exciting project.
