Year 2 Science: a butterfly’s amazing journey

This term, our Year 2 students have been learning about living things and exploring how they grow, change and respond to the world around them. A special highlight of our learning was watching a real caterpillar transform into a butterfly.

The students eagerly embraced their role as young scientists, making daily observations and recording changes to the chrysalis. They carefully noticed differences in its colour, shape and structure, using their observations to predict and explain what was happening during this fascinating process.

After a week of patient watching and wondering, the chrysalis finally opened to reveal a beautiful butterfly. The excitement in the classroom was unforgettable! Students then had the privilege of releasing the butterfly into the Del Monte Garden, where it could continue its journey in nature.

To celebrate and consolidate their learning, students created models of the butterfly life cycle, showcasing their understanding of each stage of development. It was a wonderful hands-on experience that inspired curiosity, encouraged scientific thinking and deepened their appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.
