Winter Academy outdoor education program builds confidence, skills and lasting friendships
Students returned from this year’s pilot Winter Academy with unforgettable memories, new skills and a strong sense of achievement after participating in a range of outdoor adventure activities.
One of the most memorable experiences was the canoeing expedition, which many students described as a highlight of the program. Paddling along picturesque waterways, students enjoyed the challenge of learning new canoeing techniques while taking in breathtaking scenery, including stunning sunrises, river views and an abundance of native wildlife such as kangaroos, wombats and birdlife. So popular was the experience that many students wished the expedition had lasted even longer.
Beyond the adventure itself, the program provided valuable opportunities for students to build friendships and strengthen connections with their peers. Working together through shared challenges fostered teamwork, communication and a strong sense of community.
Students also developed practical outdoor skills, including navigation, camping and perseverance. Many reflected positively on being pushed beyond their comfort zones, gaining confidence and discovering capabilities they did not know they had.
Another standout feature of the Winter Academy was the caving program. Students consistently rated caving as one of their favourite activities, with the challenging B4-5 cave proving particularly memorable. Navigating the cave system required determination, problem-solving and perseverance, helping students build confidence while overcoming both physical and mental challenges.
The adventure continued with abseiling and hiking, which provided additional excitement and opportunities for personal growth. Students valued the chance to test themselves in a supportive environment while enjoying the natural beauty of the outdoors.
A key factor in the success of the program was the encouragement provided by staff and cave guides. Their support, expertise and focus on safety enabled students to challenge themselves with confidence and achieve goals they may not have thought possible.
Importantly, students appreciated the inclusive nature of the experience. Activities were designed to cater for a variety of comfort levels, allowing every participant to challenge themselves at their own pace without feeling pressured.
The Winter Academy demonstrated the value of outdoor education, providing students with meaningful opportunities to develop independence, resilience and teamwork while creating memories that will last a lifetime. We can’t wait for 2027!
