Chaplains Corner

This week, in our Senior Years Devotional Service, we reflected on Jesus’ parable of the workers in the vineyard and explored the theme: ‘God’s generosity is Bigger than Fairness’. It is a theme that speaks powerfully into school life, family life, friendships, and the pressures young people can feel when they begin to compare themselves with others.

 

Most of us know the feeling of saying, or at least thinking, ‘That’s not fair!’ It may happen when someone else is chosen first, receives praise, earns an opportunity, or appears to be given something we feel they did not deserve. These moments can stir disappointment, frustration, resentment, or self-doubt.

 

In Matthew 20:1–16, Jesus tells of a landowner who hires workers at different times of the day yet gives each one the same pay. Those who began early expected more and complained, but the landowner reminds them that he has been fair and generous. Jesus shows us that God’s love is not earned by being first, best, busiest, or most deserving; it is a generous gift offered to all!

 

For students, especially those navigating the senior years, comparison can become a heavy burden. There can be pressure around academic results, leadership, sport, music, friendships, appearance, confidence, and future pathways. It is easy to look sideways and wonder whether someone else is ahead, more noticed, more successful, or more valued.

 

The message of this parable is deeply reassuring: our worth is not defined by ranking, achievement, popularity, or comparison. Each person is seen and loved by God. Each person has dignity. Each person belongs.

 

At MLC School, this connects beautifully with the Values we seek to nurture each day: Respect, Compassion, Courage, Integrity, and Growth. A generous heart celebrates the success of others, notices those who may feel unseen, forgives, includes, encourages, and makes room for grace.

 

May our students continue to grow in gratitude, courage, and grace. May they know that they are loved not because they are first, best, or perfect, but because they are precious in the sight of God. And may our School community continue to be a place where generosity is practised,… belonging is strengthened, and hope is shared.
