Australian Music Day

On Thursday and Friday last week, MLC School welcomed hundreds of students from visiting schools for our annual Australian Music Day.

 

This year was themed ‘The Piano’ and featured guests such as ABC presenter and MLC School Old Girl Andrea Lam (1999), Composer Dr Melody Eötvös, and Tiktok sensation Bailey Pickles.

 

Students also dove into workshops on contemporary classical, electronic and jazz takes on the piano with Julliard Doctorate student Elizabeth Younan, our Head of Keyboard Ying Ho, brilliant ex-MLC School Head of Composition Tristan Coelho, and Jazz pianist and session musician Roshan Kumarage.

 

MLC School music girls from Year 9 to Year 11 spent their day learning, composing, sharing and hearing the music of their peers. Draft ideas landed directly onto Andrea’s and Ying’s iPads where they played through and gave feedback alongside the composers.

 

We are very grateful to ABC Classic, The Australian Music Centre and especially to Theme and Variations Piano Services, who loaned us a stunning Steinway for the event. Safe to say, the future of new Australian music for piano looks very bright!
