An invitation to Year 5 and Year 6 – IPSHA Debating

At MLC School we believe the ability to speak confidently and eloquently in front of an audience is a core skill that will prepare our students for life.

We are offering Year 5 and Year 6 the opportunity to participate in the IPSHA Debating competition this year. Coaching is provided by experienced professionals and our students have achieved great success in this domain. Debating develops students’ confidence, respect for others, sense of timing and structure as well as their ability to present a persuasive argument and knowledge of current affairs topics.

The 2024 IPSHA Friday afternoon Debating Competition will be held fortnightly over seven rounds in Term 2 and Term 3.

We will be putting forward two teams of four for each competition.

Competition dates are:

  • Friday 3 May 2024
  • Friday 17 May 2024
  • Friday 31 May 2024
  • Friday 26 July 2024
  • Friday 9 August 2024
  • Friday 23 August 2024
  • Friday 6 September 2024

All competitions take place on a Friday afternoon during school hours. For any ‘Away’ competitions, MLC School staff/tutors will accompany the students by train or in MLC School Vehicles, and students will return in time for end of school routine dismissal.

The MLC School Debating Program strives for excellence and expects a high level of commitment from its debaters.

All Students are expected to attend all scheduled coaching sessions on Wednesday, 3.30-4.30pm during Term 2 and Term 3 with experienced and successful debating coaches and must inform their coach in advance of any absences.

Students who are not selected will continue to receive the coaching and training to have a greater chance of success at future selection for a team (IPSHA, ISDA or FED).
