Round Square North Queensland Tour

Round Square North Queensland Tour

The Round Square North Queensland tour to Cairns was an incredible opportunity for me to put the Round Square IDEALS of adventure, internationalism, environmentalism and service into practice alongside new friends from Colombia and the USA.

I made so many new memories with everyone and got to learn about their cultures while also sharing mine. Although we were all from different corners of the world, we had so much more in common than we thought – from sharing the same music taste to all enjoying the same card games together at dinner on the last night. It was also insightful to discuss our differences. For example, the Colombians were quite disappointed with our breakfasts here in Australia and described theirs in a way that definitely put ‘eat a Colombian breakfast’ at the top of my bucket list!

My highlight activity of the trip was the Adventure day. We started off with a snorkeling session at Mackay Island on the Great Barrier Reef, before having lunch together and heading off to ziplining through the Daintree Rainforest – during both of which I got to learn about our native habitats here in Australia. However, tree planting and the waterhole swimming took close seconds, giving us opportunities to help the local agriculture community and get to know each other early in the trip.

As someone who has been an attendee of the Round Square IDEALS society at MLC School since I joined in Year 7, I went into this trip with quite a lot of prior knowledge about what Round Square stands for, however this trip gave me a whole new perspective on what it means to actively apply some of the IDEALS to my daily life.

No matter how much you know about Round Square, these trips are an incredible opportunity for all students to learn about what it means to provide and care for your community and open your mind to new and beneficial ideas.
