Junior State Debating Trials

by Mr Reveleigh

On Thursday the 3rd of September, the regional team trials for the Years 9 and 10 division of the Junior State Debating Championship was held at Kirawee High School. Fort Street High School sent two of our best debaters, Samuel H and Linus H, who represented Fort Street admirably.

After an intensive day of demonstrating debating skills and knowledge, Samuel Hao has been selected for the team. Congratulations to Sam and we wish him all the best for the championship!

Year 8 debating

On Friday the 11th of September, our school’s Year 8 debating team debated against The Jannali High School team in a regional final. The topic was ‘That we should build more public housing in wealthy suburbs’. Fort Street was negative, with 1st speaker Billy, 2nd speaker Yvette, 3rd speaker Vihaan, and 4th speaker Jayden.

Both teams gave great arguments for the difficult topic, but in the end the adjudicator awarded Fort Street the win! We wish The Jannali High team all the best in future debates, and congratulate our Year 8 team on a skilful win, as well as wishing them good luck as they continue through the Premier’s Debating Challenge.

Year 7 and 8 Premier’s Debating Challenge – Regional Final 2

By Kahlia M and Sophie K

On Monday the 21st of September, our Year 8 debating team debated against the GRC Hurstville team in their second regional final. The topic was ‘That Year 7 & 8 food technology classes should be required to use bush tucker ingredients.’ Our team was the negative, and they did fantastically, winning the debate! The first speaker was Billy, second speaker Joanna, third speaker Vihaan, and fourth speaker Yvette.

This was a tricky topic and our team still thought of excellent arguments. They also did really well on rebutting all of the opposition’s arguments.

Thank you to the adjudicator Maja for giving really useful feedback and to the opposing team for being great opponents. Congratulations to our Year 8 team and best of luck for the next regional knockout!
