Wear it Purple Day

Wear it Purple Day is a movement that aims to promote inclusivity and support for young people in the queer community. This year it will be celebrated at SCEGGS on Friday 4th September. In support of this day, students in the secondary school are encouraged to participate by wearing a purple ribbon in their hair or on their uniform on Friday.

Founded in 2010 by two Australian activists, Wear it Purple Day emerged as one part of a strategy to counteract the marginalisation, bullying and isolation that queer youth can experience. The significance of purple lies in its fusion of pink, symbolising love and femininity, and blue, symbolising acceptance and masculinity, creating a powerful message of unity and support for those often marginalised due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

This year, the theme for Wear it Purple Day is Colours of Courage. Courage takes many forms! It can mean speaking up and advocating for inclusion, but it can also take much quieter forms: asking for support, standing beside someone, or choosing hope in spaces where being yourself mightn’t always feel easy.

Wear it Purple Day celebrates diversity and supports LGBTQIA+ youth. By wearing purple, individuals and communities show their commitment to creating supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive communities.

This special day serves as a reminder that everyone is made in the image of God, is worthy of love and care, and deserves to be accepted and celebrated for who they are.
