Year 8 Reflection Day
The usual rhythm of the Year 8 school day was recently transformed into a vibrant space of introspection, energy, and growth. Our students stepped away from their academic schedules to participate in the annual Year 8 Reflection Day, a pivotal milestone in their journey through secondary school.
To lead this experience, we were joined by the Youth Mission Team (YMT), an organisation renowned for its dynamic and peer-to-peer approach to youth ministry. Through a carefully curated blend of high-energy games, poignant drama, and personal testimonies, the YMT mentors invited our students to look beyond the surface of their daily lives and consider the deeper values that drive them.
The core theme of the day focused on ‘relationships’. In an age where young people are navigated by a constant stream of external influences, the day provided a much needed opportunity for students to evaluate the power of their own agency. The YMT facilitators explored how self-worth, healthy relationships, and a strong moral compass are foundational to making choices that lead to a fulfilling life.
Throughout the sessions, the atmosphere shifted from laughter during team-building activities to a respectful silence during moments of quiet reflection. Small group discussions allowed students to share their perspectives in a safe, supportive environment, fostering a sense of solidarity across the cohort. It was a day dedicated to the “whole person,” reminding our students that while their academic achievements are important, it is the character they build and the choices they make that truly define their future.
As our Year 8s return to their regular studies, they do so with more than just memories of a day out of class; they carry with them new tools for resilience and a renewed understanding of their own potential. Mrs Morizzi, a huge thank you for your leadership on the Year 8 Reflection Day! Your hard work in coordinating with the Youth Mission Team paid off brilliantly, and the students truly resonated with the program. We are so lucky to have your energy and expertise behind these pivotal school events!
Ms Mary David, Year 8 Coordinator
Year 8 students’ meaningful Reflection Day centred on recognising their intrinsic, God‑given value. Through prayer, activities, and discussion, students explored the idea that their worth does not come from status, popularity, or achievement, but from the unconditional love of God. This theme invited them to see themselves with dignity and confidence, grounded in intrinsic worth.
The day also challenged students to embrace a new standard of relationships – one shaped by Jesus’ call to love your neighbour as yourself. Students reflected on how kindness, respect, and empathy can transform friendships and strengthen our community, deepening their understanding of Christian relationships.
Finally, students were encouraged to recognise that growing closer to God expands our capacity to love others. Through quiet reflection and prayer, they considered how knowing God personally helps them become more compassionate, patient, and generous in daily life, continuing their journey of knowing God.
