Beyond the Game: How Sport Supports Mental Wellbeing and Academic Success
This week, I would like to highlight the important relationship between participation in sport, mental wellbeing and academic development.
For children aged 8 to 12 years , sport plays a vital role in developing confidence, friendships, resilience and lifelong healthy habits. While the physical benefits of sport are well recognised, its positive influence on mental wellbeing and learning is equally important.
Regular physical activity can help reduce stress, improve mood, strengthen concentration and support better sleep. Sport also provides students with a valuable break from academic demands, allowing them to recharge and return to the classroom feeling refreshed and more focused.
Beyond these benefits, sport teaches important life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, responsibility and time management. Learning to overcome challenges, manage disappointment and celebrate personal improvement builds resilience that extends well beyond the sporting field.
At MLC School, we believe participation, enjoyment and personal development are just as important as winning. Not every student will become an elite athlete, but every student can benefit from being involved in sport.
I encourage all families to support their daughters in finding sporting activities they enjoy. A healthy balance between sport, academics and rest can contribute significantly to a child’s overall wellbeing and development.
Ultimately, school sport is not just about developing better athletes; it’s about developing confident, resilient and well-rounded young people.
MLC on three—one, two, three, MLC!
