During the Year 7 Parent Information Evening in Term 1, Ms Gyton and Mr Gallagher were invited to contribute to the development of a creative challenge: to draw arbitrary lines on a blank page for an art student to transform into a coherent image using the skills cultivated in the SCEGGS Visual Arts classroom such as:
- Planning
- Critical thinking
- Problem solving
- Initiative and persistence
- Confidence
- Ingenuity
- Imagination
- Innovation
- Creativity
Zara Pulley, a Year 9 student, created the work below. It is a compelling example of how an art student applies the skills above in the process of solving complex visual problems.
What is particularly impressive about Zara’s drawing is that, beyond its technical accomplishment and expressive execution, it reveals the confidence and imagination required to transform a few tentative marks on a blank sheet of paper into imagery of such resonance. Through a series of thoughtful decisions, Zara has developed a work that is both visually engaging and evocative for the viewer.
Her achievement demonstrates that artmaking develops far more than technical skill. It builds the capacity to generate ideas, refine them through experimentation, and respond creatively to challenges as they arise. These problem-solving skills are invaluable, not only within the Visual Arts classroom, but across all areas of learning, and they remain among the most highly sought-after skills in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing twenty-first-century world.
