From Ms Gyton

From Ms Gyton

It was so lovely to have all staff and students gather together on the Sports Hall Roof for the Official Opening of the redeveloped Wilkinson House on Monday. Together with our special guests, this was an important moment for us all to formally recognise this new chapter in the life of a building that has been part of SCEGGS’ story for many decades.

Our ceremony started with a beautiful Acknowledgement of Country delivered by Year 12’s Ashaa Bonner, and then a musical acknowledgement performed by Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. I was particularly pleased to welcome back Ms Allum who officially opened Wilkinson House with the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon – with the cheerful assistance of our 2026 Head Prefect Zara Perkins and our youngest student Lucy Vanderhoek. As the thunderous three cheers erupted, it signalled to all present that this is not just a building, but a place where every girl has the opportunity to grow into the best person she can possibly be.

Wilkinson House is an excellent example of balancing heritage and tradition with progress and sustainability, which is so important to SCEGGS’ ethos. But what makes this building truly fantastic are the people; the people who made this vision possible and the people whose energy, laughter and enjoyment will echo through the corridors for generations to come.

Wilkinson House began life as a block of mid-war flats constructed in 1928 and designed by celebrated Sydney architect Emil Sodersten. The building was purchased in the 1960s by SCEGGS and evolved to serve the School over the years as a much-loved home for our boarders, and at its peak, was home to 100 students.  Following the closure of the Boarding House in 2001, the building was adapted for classroom use, however the design and aging infrastructure were a significant constraint to its effective use as a modern learning facility.

Guided by the vision of former Head of School Jenny Allum, the space has been thoughtfully transformed. It now fosters good teaching and learning, offers places for quiet work and reflection, incorporates team-based staffrooms and multi-sized meeting spaces and has increased our sporting facilities with a strength and conditioning gym and an additional sports-focused classroom space. There are other features of the building that are perhaps not so visible; durable, low-maintenance materials, water efficient features that capture rainwater and the roof-top solar panels which all contribute to a more environmentally sound building.

As I mentioned earlier, it was Ms Allum’s vision that ignited the redevelopment of Wilkinson House, but the complexity of this project required the time, commitment, expertise and leadership of the School Board, Building Committee, Smart Design Studio and Grindley Construction to bring it to life. It would not have been possible without the philanthropic drive of the SCEGGS Trust, our Light Her Path Ambassadors and the hundreds of past and current families, staff, Old Girls and the wider community who contributed generously to the fundraising campaign which helped to deliver the project under budget. And we could not have done it without the patience and good humour of our students and staff who managed many different disruptions to their daily routine.

Wilkinson House stands as a physical testament to what SCEGGS can achieve when we all come together and I am deeply grateful to each and every person who played a part.

If you have not had an opportunity to walk through the space yet, we’d love to see you at the ‘open house’ walk through next week – all current parents and carers are welcome, so please see the invitation sent via email on Monday for all the details.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Festival on Forbes

Festival on Forbes

Our Fair Committee are excitedly planning and preparing for our wonderful Festival on Forbes on Sunday 23 August.

Here are some ways you can get involved:

Support Our Silent Auction

The SCEGGS Festival on Forbes Silent Auction is a wonderful celebration of community, generosity and connection. Funds raised will support the growth of our scholarship program, helping more local students from diverse backgrounds access a SCEGGS education.

We are seeking prize donations to help make this year’s auction a success. Voucher donations are especially popular, including dining experiences, shopping vouchers, wellness treatments, family activities, accommodation stays and professional services.

Your contribution will not only support an important cause but also provide valuable exposure for your business within the SCEGGS community.

To donate a prize, please email Bree Parker in the Development Office.

Thank you for your support.

Vintage & Second-Hand Wardrobe Stall

School holidays are the perfect time for a wardrobe refresh!

As you’re clearing cupboards and making room for the season ahead, we’d love you to set aside pieces for the Festival on Forbes Vintage & Second-Hand Wardrobe Stall.

This isn’t simply a second-hand stall – it’s a curated, second-life clothing market, built from thoughtful donations from our school community. At every festival, families discover incredible finds, from everyday essentials to designer treasures. And every donation helps make the stall a success.

We’re looking for quality pre-loved fashion across all brands and price points – everything from Aldi to Armani, Supre to Scanlan, Zara to Zimmermann! If it’s something you’d happily pass on to a friend or purchase yourself, we’d love to receive it.

And we are once again featuring a designer collection, so those beautiful pieces hiding at the back of your wardrobe are very much appreciated!

Quality matters
To create a stall that our community is excited to shop from, we ask that all donations be:

  • Clean and freshly laundered
  • In excellent wearable condition
  • Free from stains, holes, damage or excessive wear
  • Something you would feel proud to pass on

We kindly ask that heavily worn, damaged or stained items be directed to other textile recycling or donation channels such as Upparel.

This stall relies on many volunteer hours behind the scenes. The more care taken when preparing donations, the more time our volunteers can spend creating a beautiful, sustainable shopping experience for everyone — and the less ends up as waste.

Donation collection will begin Friday 24 July (Term 3, Week 1). Further information and reminders regarding clothing and other Festival on Forbes donations is available below.

Donation Drop-Offs

A drop-off zone will be available every Friday morning from 24 July in the Forbes Street car park, just before the Green Gate. There will be special parking spots reserved for donations to be unloaded – look out for the Festival on Forbes volunteers in high vis from 7.45am! Click here for a step-by-step guide on how to make your drop-off.

The SCEGGS Podcast “Walk The Mile” Episode 75 The Joys of a Journey with Lisa Perkovic

I always look forward to a holiday and I reckon I wouldn’t be alone in that pleasure. But what to do with the time off isn’t always straight forward. Do I stay home in my pyjamas or should I venture out to somewhere unseen? Old Girl Lisa Perkovic from the Class of 2005  is a travel writer that has seen a lot of the world and has to write about it for a career. For some people, this sounds like the dream job. In this podcast, Lisa talks about what she has learnt, some of the challenges she has faced and what keeps her passion for travelling alive. It might help if you are lucky enough to be considering your next destination. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

And a reminder that we are published on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other popular platforms so you can access it easier from your preferred device. I always welcome your feedback or any ideas you may have for further episodes. You will find each podcast as they are produced in this newsletter and on the other platforms as well as our website.

Donations for those less fortunate

Thanks to all of those people that have brought in groceries, cooked meals and lots of warm blankets and clothing over this term. I will be taking a lot of this stuff out in the holidays so please keep bringing it in until the end of term. The Term 3 dates for the Monday Food Delivery are now online. If you would like to put your name down or would like to join for the first time and have no idea what it is, please click here.

And there may be another new and exciting activity about to happen for students in the Secondary School soon. Watch this space…..

From the Primary School

From the Primary School

On Friday 26 June, the Primary School will celebrate B Kinder Day.

This initiative, led by the B Kinder Foundation, aims to encourage conversations about kindness and to empower young people to make a positive difference in their communities.

Throughout the day, the girls will participate in a range of activities designed to promote kindness, empathy and inclusion, and to explore the impact that small acts of kindness can have on the lives of others. We will also come together for a special K–6 Assembly in the Great Hall at 10.15 am.

To help spread kindness and happiness across our community, the day will be a non-uniform day. Girls are encouraged to wear the colours of the rainbow or clothing featuring positive messages of kindness, hope and friendship.

Families are also invited to support the work of the B Kinder Foundation through a gold coin donation. All funds raised will be donated directly to the Foundation to assist in its ongoing work promoting kindness, connection and positive wellbeing within schools and communities.

We look forward to a joyful day of learning, reflection and celebration.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

During the Year 7 Parent Information Evening in Term 1, Ms Gyton and Mr Gallagher were invited to contribute to the development of a creative challenge: to draw arbitrary lines on a blank page for an art student to transform into a coherent image using the skills cultivated in the SCEGGS Visual Arts classroom such as:

  • Planning
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving
  • Initiative and persistence
  • Confidence
  • Ingenuity
  • Imagination
  • Innovation
  • Creativity

Zara Pulley, a Year 9 student, created the work below. It is a compelling example of how an art student applies the skills above in the process of solving complex visual problems.

What is particularly impressive about Zara’s drawing is that, beyond its technical accomplishment and expressive execution, it reveals the confidence and imagination required to transform a few tentative marks on a blank sheet of paper into imagery of such resonance. Through a series of thoughtful decisions, Zara has developed a work that is both visually engaging and evocative for the viewer.

Her achievement demonstrates that artmaking develops far more than technical skill. It builds the capacity to generate ideas, refine them through experimentation, and respond creatively to challenges as they arise. These problem-solving skills are invaluable, not only within the Visual Arts classroom, but across all areas of learning, and they remain among the most highly sought-after skills in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing twenty-first-century world.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Congratulations to Pippa Brenner (Year 12) and Siena Walsh (Year 8) who both came in first at the Rostrum Voice of Youth State Finals on Saturday.  Around 900 students entered the competition and they are through to the National Final where the four top students from each Division represent their State.  They have both dedicated numerous hours of research, writing and rehearsing speeches, as well as practicing impromptu speaking and it is a huge achievement to make it this far.

The National finals will be held on Saturday, July 25 at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney.  I will publish more details closer to the date.  Anyone is welcome to attend to support the girls.

Sportswomen of SCEGGS

Sportswomen of SCEGGS

Next time you are in the Sports Hall, take a moment to visit the recently reinstalled Sportswomen of SCEGGS display. It celebrates the outstanding sporting achievements of  past SCEGGS students who have represented Australia at the highest level or have been pioneers in their chosen sporting field.

There are some remarkable stories on display! You may like to read of the two most recent additions to the display:

  • Phyllis O’Donell fits both categories. In 1964, she was the inaugural winner of the World Surfing Championships held in Manly. Phyllis is credited with helping establish a tradition of Australian women’s surfing excellence. Nearly two decades later, in 1983, she led a group of women who broke away from Surfing Australia to form their own competition series, the Women’s Surfing Association. While this group was ultimately short-lived, its formation pushed Surfing Australia to improve conditions for female competitors.
  • Marina Carrier is one of SCEGGS’ recent Olympians, having represented Australia in the Modern Pentathlon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  If you look closely at the  showjumping photograph, you will notice the rather poignant absence of spectators, a reminder that the Games were held during the COVID-19 pandemic. During Marina’s career, the Modern Pentathlon involved competing in five events: fencing, swimming, show jumping and the combined laser run (running and shooting).

With Old Girls Phoebe Cridland, Amy Parmenter and Siena Green all currently competing at the national level, and many of our current students following in their footsteps, we will soon need to find more wall space to celebrate the achievements of the next generation of SCEGGS sporting stars!
