Twelfth Night – Week 6
“If music be the food of love, play on” is but one phrase we readily associate with the iconic works of William Shakespeare. His dialogue is so much a part of our lexicon, whether we’re aware or not. It can be most surprising to discover that an everyday expression we use was first uttered in a play penned by the Bard of Stratford on Avon. We have much to celebrate in the gift of his repertoire of plays – language, lessons and the most vivid of characters and narrative.
In choosing a Shakespeare offering for our second production of the year, we didn’t have to ponder for long. Twelfth Night is one of his most endearing works, with its mix of madness and mayhem, mistaken identity, broad comedy and touching pathos. It is a perfect project on which to unleash the imaginations, talents and wit of our young band of actors.
At the top of the play, Count Orsino waxes lyrical of music, love and play in his poetic musings. He, and Shakespeare are signalling to us the story to unfold; a narrative made from the good things in life … especially the food!
Mr Stephen Colyer is our esteemed director, and he leads a phenomenal creative team who have guided the company with such joy and talent as theatre-makers.
We’re thrilled too that our production will feature the “food of love” in the guise of the Emma Pask Jazz Band, led by Mr Matt Moore. These music students are a wonderful addition to the talents on board in this show. Gee we are fortunate at SCEGGS!
