The All For Youth Campaign

The Year 10 Design and Technology Class is working on an awareness campaign dedicated to spreading word on social media about a chosen cause for a group project. We have chosen an issue that is very relevant and a forefront issue in our current society- youth poverty. More than a million young Australians are affected by child poverty, and we have decided to dedicate our cause to raising awareness for these people.

According to Unicef, children are twice as likely to live in poverty than adults. This demographic spans from infants to young adults (between the ages 0 to 20) who are both disproportionately affected and more vulnerable to the impacts of youth poverty. This demographic represents a third of the population but makes up for more than half of the population living on less than $2 a day. Of the 5 million children in Australia, 1.2 million live in poverty. Events that have recently increased youth poverty in Australia include the rising economic crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and an increase in unemployment. In today’s society, it is getting harder and harder to get by, this places young adults with less work and management experience at risk of falling into poverty.

There is a genuine need to raise awareness on this issue due to how vulnerable youth are as a demographic and the importance these initial development stages have on the rest of their lives. This need is furthered by the fact that one in six children in Australia live in poverty meaning that these individuals live from such a young age with limited or no access to necessities such as education, housing, nutrition, sanitation or water. They often grow up malnourished and die at a younger age due to limited access to healthcare and a lack of education results with a reduced chance of employment, increasing generational poverty.

To take active or passive action visit the Instagram page we (Akshaya, Jonathan, Han, and Ella) have created to spread awareness of youth poverty.
