Year 8 Sushi Making Incursion
On Monday 1 June students in Year 8 Japanese classes learnt sushi, wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) and matcha making from chef Hideo Dekura. We enjoyed learning about Japanese culture and language as we prepared and then ate food together. It was interesting to learn that Japanese “eat with their eyes first” reflecting the importance of the visual presentation of food. Chef Dekura’s sushi and sweets were certainly attractive, including ‘flower’ sushi with rice coloured by beetroot! The matcha was bitter, which balanced the wagashi sweets. Some of us look forward to using our new skills to make sushi again soon.
