MUSICAL THEATRE AND ACTING WORKSHOPS

– Eliza Carter | Year 10

Over the course of 4 days, 40 students from across Australia were selected for the Musical Theatre and Acting Workshops at Griffith University in Brisbane. I was lucky enough to be a part of the acting workshop, in which we developed new skills and put together pieces for final display for friends and family.

We learnt skills such as: developing characters from scratch; being generous with our onstage energy; on-the-spot improvisation; the importance of basic grammar and the meaning of script. The display consisted of a classical musical piece (“Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat”, Guys and Dolls), a modern piece (“Freak Flag”, Shrek) plus a scene from Shrek. Overall, it was a great experience filled with many lessons that will last a lifetime in performing.

SPORTING SUCCESS

Year 12 student, Flora Nona was selected for the Womens Queensland Country Team – Shadow (Rugby League). Flora is a natural athlete and excels in a number of team sports. She possesses all the key attributes of a competitive player: focus, determination and the ability to dig-deep when you’ve already given everything. This is a wonderful achievement after many years of training and playing – well done, Flora!

Meanwhile, Year 8 student, Gabriella Parenti recently played for the Townsville 1 Team in Hockey QLD U13 Girls State Championships. The team made it through to the Grand Final and it was a nail biting finish: it was a draw at full time! Alas, after the penalty shoot out, Bundaberg emerged as the champions, but by all accounts the Townsville 1 Team can be proud of the effort and ferocity with which they played. Congratulations, Gabriella!

And last, but not least, three of our talented sports stars shone brightly at the Netball Junior State Age Championships in Brisbane in the holidays. Representing Townsville, Year 11 student, Savanna Burney (Umpire), Year 7 student, Isobelle Gilbride (12 Years) and Year 9 student, Lacy Triffett (14 Years) enjoyed a fantastic, albeit chilly competition with the best in the State. Congratulations, Savanna, Isobelle and Lacy.
