Design & Technology “SHAPE” Nominations

Design & Technology “SHAPE” Nominations

Congratulations to Erin Zikos, Sophie Kuijper and Lucy Morrison of Year 12 2020, on receiving nominations for their Major Design Projects in SHAPE  2020; the annual exhibition of a selection of exemplary Major Projects.

All the students developed challenging and innovative projects addressing genuine needs and opportunities in the process. Focusing in on an interest in “high-tech architecture”, Erin Zikos designed a sensory pod for her brother Leo, to engage him in physical therapies. Sophie Kuijper used a range of digital tools to architecturally design an innovative, modular aged-care facility and drawing inspiration from Christian Dior, Lucy Morrison designed a couture dress, adorned with hand-made embellishments made from recycled materials.

Congratulations to all these students as well as the entire Year 12 Design & Technology, 2020 cohort on their extraordinary endeavours and an innovative collection of projects.

Please visit the wonderful  virtual exhibition  of the class of 2020, and walk through the journeys of their major design projects.

That COVID Show

We have been able to complete a performance outcome for our students in the form of this very special film, responding to the events of an extraordinary year. We reflect on a year that marked SCEGGS 125th birthday but also challenged the nation and the world in a myriad of ways – bushfires, black lives matter and the COVID-19 pandemic.

We take great pride in the creativity and craft of the girls who have explored their individual skills and talents to produce this very special event. The girls of SCEGGS TV have also been tremendous contributors in filming, recording, and editing the film.

THAT COVID SHOW may be accessed through THIS LINK.

The film will be available to view for the remainder of 2020.

St Peter’s Players

Students participating in our co-curricular Drama program have once again experienced a year of creativity, collaboration, and fun. Thank you to our St Peter’s Player’s tutors, Poppy Lynch and Romy Bartz, who have guided the girls with great energy and insight.

An additional Open (Years 7-11) class in ‘Writing for the Stage and Screen’ will be offered during semester one with Liv Satchell.

Have a jolly Christmas and a terrific break – from the Drama Department!

I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.

Minimum environmental impact Christmas

Minimum environmental impact Christmas

2020 has been a difficult year for everyone. Thankfully there have been some small wins for the environment including a reduction of greenhouse emissions and the flourishing of ecosystems normally disrupted by human activity.  Christmas is often a time of overconsumption and excessive waste production which is why we need to be mindful of the environmental impacts of how we celebrate. Here are some ways to reduce the impact of your Christmas when planning your food, decorations and presents.

  • Ditch the disposables! Get everyone involved in washing and drying up rather than throwing out
  • Fashion your fabric scraps or and old sheet into linen napkins for the table
  • Go for natural materials when purchasing Christmas decorations. Avoid plastic, polystyrene or easily broken glass.
  • Put out separate bins for recycling in the kitchen so all waste goes in the correct bin. If you do not have a worm farm or compost bin consider purchasing one as a Christmas present!
  • Think carefully about the gifts you give – something they want, something they need, something to wear or something to read
  • Buy ecofriendly gifts that will last, consider make your gifts or donating money
  • Use what you have around the house to wrap gifts. This could include glossy magazines, painted newspaper or material and tea towels. Start saving materials like this for present giving during the year. If you need to buy Christmas paper make sure it has been made from reusable sources.
  • Making your own Christmas cards and gift tags using scrap materials from around the house.
  • Have an eco-friendly Christmas tree- one that is living or make one out of sticks and natural materials
  • Donate unwanted gifts instead of putting them in the bin
  • Lean towards more plant-based ingredients in your food choice and make sure to buy local
  • Try not to over-cater! Ask your guests to bring a reusable container to take leftovers home

Some more tips on a sustainable Christmas can be found in the websites below:

Be an eco-warrior and change the culture of your family Christmas to be more eco-friendly one! Remember the words of Jane Goodall “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Have a wonderful Christmas.
