Wilkinson House DA Approved!

I am very excited to share with the SCEGGS community that the development application for the SCEGGS Darlinghurst – Adaptive re-use of Wilkinson House (SSD-19989744) has been approved!

This means that William Smart’s beautiful, functional and sustainable vision for Wilkinson House will now be realised. Students and teachers can look forward to 10 great new learning areas that are large, light-filled and support a full range of learning modes. There will be an extension to the Sports Hall as well as light-filled spaces for recreation.

Hopefully, it might be possible for construction work to start at the end of the year with a view for us to occupy the building in late 2024. We are very grateful for the support we have received through the Light Her Path capital campaign to bring this vision to life. The campaign is ongoing, however the DA approval is a significant milestone in our journey to develop our small footprint in inner-city Darlinghurst for our current and future generations.

The approval has been the culmination of two submissions, consultation with our local community, neighbours, local indigenous representatives, government bodies and heritage experts which we will continue as we move towards the build. An overview of our consultation process is available here.

The upcoming Festival of Forbes on Sunday 21 August is a great opportunity to visit the SCEGGS campus where the SCEGGS Trust will be hosting tours of Wilkinson House and will share an overview of the new development.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Calling for Volunteers

This is a shout-out to parents and carers who may be able to help in the day by volunteering in one of the following days:

  • Your Year group will need your help running the stall on the day, please contact your Class Parent for a link to the stall’s roster. Email your Class Parents if you can assist in any way or have any questions.
  • Merry People – we need hands for setting up and pulling down on Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon. The SCEGGS team work hard in the weeks leading up to the fair, but hands are needed on the day to help stall holders move into their area, with stall setup and then with tear down and bumping out. There are only a few hours after the Fair to have the classrooms ready for Monday morning classes.
  • Treasury Runners/EFTPOS Mentors – Volunteers are needed to assist with collecting cash from the stalls, counting and recording money received and EFTPOS machine support. Guidance for these procedures will be fully provided to all volunteers.

Cake Boxes

Cake boxes have been distributed to students, with some year groups to receive theirs early next week. And, as promised, here is a link to a recipe guide to inspire the baker in all of us!

Linking Student ID Cards to your FlexiSchools account

Did you know that students can pay for purchases/orders in the School Cafeteria with their Student ID card? To enable this, the student ID card needs to be linked to your FlexiSchools account.

You can find the instructions on how to do this here. The instructions are also available on the SCEGGS Portal, on the School Resources page.

The student card number is visible at the bottom of the ID Card.

Students wishing to pay with their SCEGGS student card at the Cafeteria must present their SCEGGS student card to the Cafeteria staff who are required to see the photo before a purchase is made as these cards are linked to debit cards/credit cards via Flexischools.

Students will not be permitted to make a purchase with a card if:

  • The image on their card has been damaged/destroyed/defaced so that their photo is no longer clear or visible on the card
  • They choose not to show their photo to the cafeteria staff
  • … and most importantly, the image on the card they show is not them!

If a new student card is needed for any reason, students are advised to please see Mrs Moss in the General Office and she will let you know how to order a new one and the costs to do so. Other alternatives for purchasing are to pre-order online using Flexischools or to pay with a physical debit/credit card.

Water Polo

Junior World Cup

A special to congratulations to Sienna Green in Year 12 who recently captained the Australian Junior Water Polo team at the FINA Youth Women’s World Championships in Serbia. The Australian team finished 6th overall following a narrow loss to Spain in their final match.

Sienna had a very successful tournament with an impressive 5 individual goals. As the team captain, Sienna had the following words to say about her teammates:

“I am just so proud of my girls … we are really happy about our position on the list; we all wanted to sense this international experience. We’ve gathered an incredible number of applicable advice at this championship, so this was truly a wonderful journey for our team”

Everyone at SCEGGS is so very proud of you Sienna, and we are excited and look forward to celebrating many more achievements as you embark on your international career.

NSW Junior Teams

The SCEGGS Water Polo success continues with Elizabeth Shin and Claudia Quinn being named in their respective NSW State age teams.

Elizabeth was named in the born 2008 Blues Team whilst Claudia was named in born 2007 Blues Team.

Good luck to both Elizabeth and Claudia as they prepare for Nationals.

Parents Code of Conduct for Saturday Sport

It has been wonderful to see spectators allowed back on the sidelines of school sport once again. I have really enjoyed meeting and chatting with many parents at sporting fixtures throughout the year.

Since the return to sport after Covid lockdowns, there has been a significant decrease in the amount coaches, referees/umpires and officials available. All schools are struggling to supply officials and many matches, particularly at IPSHA level, do not have any referees. Some schools are using teenage school students to cover officiating duties. If you have any issues or concerns at sporting fixtures, could I request that parents contact myself via email or phone, rather than approaching coaches, referees or opposing school staff.

I have included a couple of short articles from the Play By The Rules website that offer some tips for parents and shed light on some of the complex issues faced on the sidelines at sport. I encourage everyone to have a read:

IGSA Fixtures, Results and Wet Weather

There is a new IGSA website and platform for accessing wet weather, fixtures and team results. You do not need to register or sign up to be a member to access this site.

Book Character Parade

Book Character Parade

On Thursday 25 August, all the girls in the Primary School are invited to DRESS UP as a book character, and to participate in the annual Book Character Parade. The purpose of this event is to celebrate Book Week in 2022!

Book Week is officially organised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia and is now in its 77th year. The aim of Book Week is to highlight the importance of, and the joy of reading; the theme in 2022 is Dreaming With Eyes Open.

Girls are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character and to bring a book to match their outfit. The girls may come to school already dressed in their costume and go home the same way. If girls come to school or go home by public transport, they will need to wear their uniform to school and change into their costume when they arrive.

Parents should ensure sensible shoes are worn as “character” shoes can be worn for the parade only.

Girls should also be aware that it is a normal school day and they need to sit and move around the classroom as usual, so large or uncomfortable costumes may not be such a good idea!

Parents are welcome to attend the parade and should arrive at the Primary School ready for the start of the parade at 9am. The parade will be held on the Primary playground weather permitting.

We are looking forward to a fun event to celebrate books and reading!

SYO Regional Tour

Last week, SYO’s Peter Seymour Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Orchestra had the opportunity to visit the communities of Lismore and Port Macquarie on our Regional Tour. Being able to spread some positivity and music to these communities who have gone through so much hardship throughout the past couple years, especially with the floods in Lismore earlier this year, was truly amazing. It was heart-warming to see so many people connect through music we played, as well as us being able to connect with local musicians who haven’t been able to play in a large orchestra for years.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

This week’s banner is one of Eleanor Purcell’s images from the night time photography shoot at Bundanon.

Hello Bundanon!

The inaugural art camp to Bundanon was a magnificent end to week 2 for a group of Year 11 and 10 Visual Arts students. Bundanon is a sprawling natural property on the banks of the Shoalhaven river near Nowra and was the home of the Modernist painter Arthur Boyd, who gifted it to the nation in 1993. Whilst the historic sandstone homestead that was the home and studio for Arthur Boyd is in itself a beautiful piece of living history, it is the new additions to the site, namely the Bridge accommodation and centre for creative learning where we stayed during our trip, and the new gallery both designed by Melbourne architect Kerstin Thompson, that really captured our imagination.

Students were immersed in art the moment they alighted from the bus, with a private evening viewing of the gallery, then up the next morning to begin several workshops responding to themes such as the natural world, the figure and the built environment which culminated in the group exploring night photography in and around the Glen Murcutt buildings.

The 2022 Bundanon art trip was an incredible experience which gave every girl the opportunity to gain a new set of valuable skills. Surrounded by nature and animals, we were able to immerse ourselves in the environment and create some amazing art. Upon arrival, we were fortunate enough to get a tour of the onsite art gallery, which included various works of painter, Arthur Boyd. The remainder of the camp consisted of a multitude of photography activities such as nature walks, photographic collages, and even night-time photography. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the camp, gaining new skills, learning about the elements of photography, and making unforgettable memories.

Ianna Fatouros Year 11

Last weekend was full of flying fabric, mad collage and aweing at art and architecture as well as delicious grub. Students from the Year 11 and Year 10 art classes were lucky enough to visit Bundanon on an art camp. Our trip began on Friday, after packing the essentials rations we were ready to head off. Bundanon is located on Wodi Wodi and Yuin land, situated near Nowra. Bundanon in every way encourages unity and ecology in the environment. The physical architecture of Bundanon was bewitching, and it is perfectly embedded into its landscape. Our art gallery visit strung together different perspectives of the surrounding environment, from historical to contemporary. It was these ideas and appreciation for the environment that informed our art practice. On the second day we focused on photography, hiking through the bush we photographed the natural texture and verdure of the bush. Then using fabric and props we explored the idea of presence and of human interaction in the landscape. Both these activities required a deep meditative focus on our natural surroundings, an activity usually neglected in the blur of school. A huge thank you to Maz and Sas our camp leaders as well as a the incredible chefs at Bundanon, but biggest thank you to the art teachers Miss Jackson, Miss Dawson and Miss Brennan for traveling with us and making it all possible.

Life Drawing classes for Year 11 at the National Art School

We were also fortunate to be able organise bespoke sessions for Year 11 students at the National Art School last week to experience Life Drawing from a live model. Life Drawing is a foundational skill taught to students during their first year of a Bachelor’s degree and continuing as an essential feature of practice throughout their studies. It was wonderful to be able to have Luke Thurgate as our tutor as he is one of NAS’s specialist tutors and a skilful figurative artist in his own right.

As a small class we walked up the road to our neighbouring campus the National Art School. Each student was given an easel, charcoal pencils, and A2 paper. As the model shaped her poses, us girls began sketching her movement. The goal was the capture the fluidity of the human form. We had 4 minutes for each drawing, leaving our works quick and rough. At first my work was extremely tentative. I was afraid of the charcoal and unsure how to represent the body’s dimensions. But in our final 20-minute sketch I think each of us girls began to understand how to shape the movement of the body, capturing the limbs, curves, bends in the model’s form. For me life drawing at National Art school was my first experience capturing the form of a nude model. I was so thrilled with the progress I made in one short hour. I already plan on going back with the girls in my class to do more life drawing.

Bronte Burke Year 11

Last week we went to a life drawing lesson at the National Art School as part of our focus on ‘the body’. We stayed for an hour, and made five sketches, each based on a different pose. I was nervous about it at first having never done life drawing, but it ended up being a lovely experience and it helped me become more confident with my drawing. As we did four quick sketches of about five minutes each, I was forced to draw quickly and disregard my want to make the drawing perfect. As a result, I ended up creating sketches that were better than anything I’d done and since then I have been motivated to keep on practising and have continued to draw the body. It was a unique and exciting experience that I am very grateful to have had and I hope to go back again.

Toasty Tuesday

Toasty Tuesday

Toasty Tuesday is back next Tuesday on August 16 – the day after the mid-term break. We have been celebrating this day since 2019 and it is a time where we see how much energy we can save at school by turning off our heating and any unnecessary lighting as well as reducing our contribution to greenhouse gasses in the environment. Our best statistic so far is a 25% reduction in energy use. Let’s see if we can better this in 2022!

What happens on Toasty Tuesday?

  • Staff and students need to come to school in their warmest clothes. This is a mufti day where we are trying to be environmentally friendly by reducing the heating in the School.
  • The bike powered smoothies are back for Years 3 – 12. Warm yourself up by generating the energy to make you own strawberry or mango smoothie on our special bikes. These will cost $4.00. Secondary girls can pay by Eftpos or cash. Primary school girls (Year 3 – 6) can order their smoothies through Flexischools.
  • Toasted sandwiches (cheese, ham and cheese and tomato and cheese) will be available for $4.00. These can be ordered by the whole school on Flexischools.

So, get out your warm clothing and enjoy Toasty Tuesday on August 16. You may even want to challenge yourself to see how much energy you can save by creating your own Toasty Tuesday at home!
