Once again, it’s showtime at SCEGGS! The Drama Department will present the first of their two productions from Wednesday June 11 until Saturday June 14 in the St Peter’s Playhouse.
We will be presenting William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’, adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams. The cast features students from Years 7 through to 12.
In choosing ‘Lord of the Flies’ as our play production, we wanted to subvert the classic narrative of boys gone wild on a deserted island and see how the story might resonate if the single gender was girls. Some folk might think, if it were all girls on the island, harmony would exist, and life would be ordered. But there are many challenges that young women face in adolescence… ultimately, it’s a survival of adolescence.
The world is a different place in 2025 and what might this play (originally set around 1950 in the aftermath of a fictional worldwide war) teach us about ourselves? The narrative is heavily influenced by the Post-World War II era and the anxieties of the Cold War, including the threat of nuclear annihilation. The novel explored themes of civilization, savagery, and the nature of humanity in a world grappling with the aftermath of global trauma. Fortunately, our girls agreed that this was a play they wanted to explore and perform.
We have created an engaging immersive experience which promises to be visceral and exciting, challenging actors and audience alike.
Bookings are now open and can be accessed via this link.
We hope to see you there.
