Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week

Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week

At the heart of reconciliation is a shared commitment to truth-telling, understanding, and respect. We honour and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and enduring contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to Australia. Reconciliation is not a one-time event, it is an ongoing journey, built on education, empathy, and courageous conversations.

The Promise is a musical Acknowledgement of Country which was commissioned to celebrate SCEGGS’ 125th Birthday. The words were written by Georgiana Thomas-Peddell, a mainland Torres Strait Islander, and the music was co-written by Alice Chance and Georgiana Thomas-Peddell.

I promise to: Stay curious, stay serious, respect, protect, never forget to listen, to learn, to lend my voice to lift yours.

And it is in this spirit, we share with you some events and opportunities that will deepen our collective understanding as a community and allow us to listen to First Nation voices as we mark National Reconciliation Week from Tuesday 27 May to 3 June and celebrate NAIDOC Week from Sunday July 6 to 13.

Following are just a few highlights of the events and resources available during Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

Last week the first Dame Enid Lyons Oratory Competition was held and our very own Celia Watson (Year 12) won the final. She competed against nine other girls from private and public schools in Sydney with a choice of three quotes to speak on. Celia chose “When they go low, we go high” and delivered a thought provoking speech on the world we are living in at the moment and how we can make it a better place. She spoke for eight minutes with just 15 minutes preparation time and showed the amount of work she has put in to developing her public speaking skills throughout her time at SCEGGS. Celia spoke with confidence to an audience of hundreds of people in the Drama Theatre at the Sydney Opera House.

See Celia’s TV interview here.

Earlier that day the Governor General, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC welcomed the competitors and teachers to Admiralty House to congratulate the girls and offer warm words of encouragement.

This is a wonderful competition for girls to participate in to further develop their skills and will be held again next year.

Car Line Reminders for a Safe and Smooth Afternoon Pick-up

Car Line Reminders for a Safe and Smooth Afternoon Pick-up

Dear Parents and Carers

As we move through the term, we would like to offer a few gentle reminders about afternoon pick-up procedures at the Bourke Street Car Line. These routines are in place to ensure the process remains safe, efficient and respectful for everyone in our community.

To support this, we kindly ask you to take note of the following:

Car Line Expectations

  • Stay in your vehicle at all times during pick-up. Teachers will bring your daughter to your car and assist her safely inside.
  • Keep the line moving by moving forward as space becomes available.
  • Do not leave your car and wait at the school gate, as this disrupts traffic flow and delays the process for others.
  • Avoid arriving early if you are collecting a student in Years 3-6. Their dismissal time begins at 3.10pm and early arrival creates congestion while K-2 students are still being collected. If you arrive too early, you may be asked to move around the block to help keep Car Line flowing and the dismissal of the K-2 students.
  • Display your daughter’s name sign clearly in the windscreen. If you need one, please contact the Primary Office.
  • Join the queue from the northern end of Bourke Street and refrain from double parking or jumping the queue.
  • Encourage your daughter to enter the car from the kerb side with her bag. It is safer and quicker to place bags inside the front or back seats, rather than the boot.
  • Avoid taking phone calls while in Car Line to ensure your full attention is on the safety of all students.
  • Use the pedestrian crossing on Bourke Street if approaching or leaving on foot.

Managing Car Line in Wet Weather

When it rains, Car Line can take a little longer than usual. Please know that staff are doing their best to get each child safely and promptly into their car while also keeping them dry and calm. They will bring your daughter to you as quickly as possible. We kindly ask that you continue to move up the line as this expectation remains in place even in wet weather.

A Note on Student Supervision and the Dismissal Routine for K-2

Teachers will continue to walk the girls past the driveway and ask them to line up along the wall before handing them over. This routine is far easier to manage when parents either:

  • Remain in their vehicles, waiting for a staff member to bring their daughter to the car,

or

  • If on foot, walk up with the teachers and collect their daughter from the designated dismissal area.

We kindly ask that everyone is respectful and patient to our teachers on duty. Your courtesy sets a wonderful example for our children and helps maintain a calm and cooperative atmosphere at these busy times of day.

We appreciate your patience, cooperation and support in helping to reinforce these expectations. A shared commitment to these routines helps keep everyone safe and ensures the afternoon runs smoothly for all.

The SCEGGS Podcast “Walk The Mile” Episode 65: More Than Paint and Canvas with Michaela Gleave

Many of you will know that one of our buildings, Wilkinson House, has undergone a major refurbishment over the last couple of years. We are looking forward to its reopening sometime later in 2025. One of the outstanding features of the new building will be an artwork by one of our Visual Art Assistants,  Michaela Gleave. Michaela is also a professional artist in her own right and has created this wonderful artwork that will stand as the centrepiece for the rejuvenated building. In this episode, we discuss Michaela’s passion for contemporary and installation art, and how her practice draws together a wide range of disciplines and resources to create an amazing product. We talk about science, religion, philosophy, light, sound, creation, humanity and everything else. Its a pretty wild conversation!! I hope you enjoy it.

And a reminder that we are published on Spotify, Apple, Google Podcast and Deezer, so you can access it easier from your preferred device. I always welcome your feedback or any ideas you may have for further episodes. You will find each podcast as they are produced in this newsletter and on the other platforms as well as our website.

Drama News

Drama News

Once again, it’s showtime at SCEGGS! The Drama Department will present the first of their two productions from Wednesday June 11 until Saturday June 14 in the St Peter’s Playhouse.

We will be presenting William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’, adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams. The cast features students from Years 7 through to 12.

In choosing ‘Lord of the Flies’ as our play production, we wanted to subvert the classic narrative of boys gone wild on a deserted island and see how the story might resonate if the single gender was girls. Some folk might think, if it were all girls on the island, harmony would exist, and life would be ordered. But there are many challenges that young women face in adolescence… ultimately, it’s a survival of adolescence.

The world is a different place in 2025 and what might this play (originally set around 1950 in the aftermath of a fictional worldwide war) teach us about ourselves? The narrative is heavily influenced by the Post-World War II era and the anxieties of the Cold War, including the threat of nuclear annihilation. The novel explored themes of civilization, savagery, and the nature of humanity in a world grappling with the aftermath of global trauma. Fortunately, our girls agreed that this was a play they wanted to explore and perform.

We have created an engaging immersive experience which promises to be visceral and exciting, challenging actors and audience alike.

Bookings are now open and can be accessed via this link.

We hope to see you there.

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime

We were thrilled to celebrate our school’s involvement in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSST), which took place on Wednesday 21 May, alongside over 2.2 million participants at more than 16,000 venues across Australia.

Now in its 25th year, this annual event, coordinated by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), aims to foster a love of reading and boost literacy among children nationwide.

The featured book for 2025 was The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel, beautifully illustrated by Danny Snell. Exploring themes of identity, belonging, friendship, immigration, and connection, it was also shortlisted in the Picture Book category for the 2025 Children’s Book Council of Australia awards.

A range of activities brought the story to life across various year levels. I had the pleasure of reading the book to students in 1L, while Kindergarten enjoyed a digital reading via StoryBox Library, complete with visuals of an actual truck and cat! Year 3 watched the official livestream coverage at midday, and 5JW followed along individually on their laptops. These activities provided opportunities for discussion on text structure and organisation, language for expressing and developing ideas, and opportunities to interact with others and to create literature.

We look forward to participating in future celebrations that foster a love of books and storytelling in the Primary School.

Year 5 Da Vinci Decathlon

Year 5 Da Vinci Decathlon

The Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition, this year hosted by Knox Grammar School, designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. On Thursday May 22, a Year 5 and Year 6 team competed in the competition across 10 disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics and Chess, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography, and Legacy.

The team consisted of girls selected for their creative thinking and problem-solving abilities as well as their ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team. Throughout the day the girls amazed us with their team spirit and positivity as they competed against over 150 schools across Australia and New South Wales.

We are so proud of the Year 6 team for achieving 2nd in Ideation on the day! The team were collaborative, curious and persistent learners in all tasks and were fine examples of SCEGGS girls.

We would like to thank Dr Guss and Mr Sullivan who came along to some of our practice sessions in the lead up to the day. Their guidance in the areas of Science and Cartography were much appreciated by the girls.

Our wonderful Year 5 team: Eva Lobato Williams, Madeleine Chirakis, Ivy Zhang, Defne Aslan, Alice Chandler, Imogen Symons, Ava Yusiw and Maya Clark.

The fabulous Year 6 team: Annabel Ling, Dasha Jolley, Eva Geha, Harriet Hyde, Minttu Guss, Georgia Scott, Amelie Officer and Beatrice Emanuel.

Peer Mentor Program

Peer Mentor Program

Below is an article written by one of the 7P Peer Mentors, Josie Grayden, reflecting on her groups recent session with Year 7 in Week 4, which focused on preparing students for their first official assessment period.

Two students from the Year 7 class, Sofea Davey and Victoria Poniros, delivered personalised thank-you notes to the Peer Mentors of their form group, expressing gratitude for the mentors’ support and words of wisdom.

It’s wonderful to see such appreciation and the strong relationships being built through this program.

Please enjoy reading Josie’s article.

The jump from primary to high school can feel like overwhelming at times, especially when moving to a new school. New friends, new teachers, a new timetable – it can be hard to navigate. And to add to that, exam week is once again upon us. One of two weeks in the year in which we face the impending doom of spaced-out desks in the OG building (and attempt to get away with as many uniform violations as possible, only to be reminded that yes – it’s still like any other school week).

Last Tuesday, the Year 10 peer mentors visited Year 7 during Form time, to impart words of wisdom and answer questions about upcoming exams. For girls who have been doing this for years, study habits can feel like second nature (or a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, depending on the day), but it’s important to learn these skills at a young age. That’s why it’s a great time to think about how we study- not just what we study. It makes school life much more manageable and sets you up with the tools you need for life. So here are my tips for studying – consider this my list of Things I wish I knew in Year 7.

  • Regular is better than longer – you don’t need to be studying for hours on end each night for it to be effective, breaking it down and doing a bit each night can help.
  • Highlighting everything is not studying – while making a neon artwork may be a way to pass your study time, it’s better to do something like test yourself or summarise information
  • Ask questions, even silly ones – chances are people are wondering the same thing. Your teachers are on your side, and they are there to help you.
  • It’s a marathon, not a sprint – in your younger years of high school, it’s more important to learn what works for you and what doesn’t, rather than focusing on a set mark.
  • Be mindful of what you eat – while it may seem tempting, downing an entire packet of sour worms before maths probably won’t help you pass…and try to eat a proper breakfast before your exams each day.

Best of luck – You got this!

Saturday Sport

What a splendid morning it was last Saturday for sport with sunny skies greeting us. Unfortunately, Year 3 Touch Football games were cancelled due to field closures after a heavy week of rain. Both IPSHA Minkey/Hockey teams played at MLC school and one of the highlights from the weekend was the thrilling win from the combined Years 5/6 team who scored in the last minute of the game to take the win. Madeleine Chirakis (Year 5) was on fire with her shooting and scored an excellent goal after some slick passing by the team. Special mention to Jasmine Loa in the 4A game, who managed a goal in her team’s loss against Tara. At training, the girls received some tips from some of the secondary Hockey girls.

To build on National Reconciliation Week, this Saturday is the IPSHA Indigenous Sport Round. Each student will be celebrating and acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in different ways, including an Acknowledgement of Country and playing an Indigenous game to warm up. Students will also be given a ribbon to wear with the artwork created by Glen Ella, an Indigenous man from Yuin Country. The artwork of circular symbols on the ribbon represents meeting places, where Traditional Owners would gather to share knowledge. Proceeds from the purchase of the ribbons will go to the Community Spirit Foundation who work in partnership with remote First Nations communities.

Debating

Debating

The ISDA and Eastside debating competitions have officially come to an end for our senior debaters this season. We have had the highest debating numbers in SCEGGS history and congratulate all the debaters this season who have given their best effort in training every Monday and debated with courage and conviction on Friday night against numerous schools. Highlights from the end of the season:

  • The Year 8 Eastside team made it to the Semi Finals against Sydney Grammar School hosted by Cranbrook and they lost on a very difficult topic.
  • Senior A won the Octofinals against Newington College hosted in Newington

A special mention to the Senior A team who made it to the Quarter Finals of the ISDA Competition against Riverview and lost by a small margin hosted at Queenwood. This is an emotional loss for this team, as it is their last debate for SCEGGS ever. The debaters have been involved in debating for many years and have not only grown in their debating skills, however, grown in their friendship and team comradery. They are to be congratulated on their commitment to debating, they will be missed.

Further special mention to the Primary A team who have qualified for the Semi Finals of the ISDA Competition this Friday evening against Knox Grammar hosted at Monte. They won their Quarter Finals after arriving directly from camp and have shown grit and determination this season – best of luck to these girls!

Archdale Competition – Tuesday Evenings

Debaters are currently up to Round 3 in the Archdale Competition. Round 1 was a huge success with the Year 7A, 7B, 8A, 8B, 9, 10 and Senior Archdale teams all won their respective debates against Wenona on the topic of Education.  Well done to all teams for their fantastic start to the season.

SCEGGS Darlinghurst hosted an exciting round of the Archdale Debating Round 2 on Tuesday 20 May against Kambala with Year 7A, 8A and Junior teams winning their debates on the topic of Politics in Australia.

The round this week of Archdale saw SCEGGS travel to Tara which saw every team record a victory.

Round 4 will be hosted at SCEGGS.

For all away debates, a bus will be transporting debaters back to the Jacaranda Gate as the final debates approximately commence at 7.30pm. Please refer to Clipboard for all information and links for maps if debaters are being picked up by a parent/carer.

Some of the topics for the debates this term were as follows:

  • Year 10 Archdale – “That the liberal party should implement a minimum quota of female candidates selected to run for winnable seats in the federal election”.
  • Year 7 and 8 Archdale – That the Prime Minister of Australia should be elected by popular vote at the federal election
  • Primary A ISDA – that voting should be compulsory
  • Year 10 ISDA – that we regret the narrative that climate change is an individual responsibility

A special thanks to all the wonderful students who supported Debating thus far as timekeepers and chairpeople in both ISDA and Eastside. Overall, SCEGGS performed well across all competitions and students not only developed their debating skills, however, built on their collaboration, showed commitment and were courageous against competitive teams.

We thank all debaters for their involvement this season and look forward to the Archdale season ahead.
