Debating

Debating

The ISDA and Eastside debating competitions have officially come to an end for our senior debaters this season. We have had the highest debating numbers in SCEGGS history and congratulate all the debaters this season who have given their best effort in training every Monday and debated with courage and conviction on Friday night against numerous schools. Highlights from the end of the season:

  • The Year 8 Eastside team made it to the Semi Finals against Sydney Grammar School hosted by Cranbrook and they lost on a very difficult topic.
  • Senior A won the Octofinals against Newington College hosted in Newington

A special mention to the Senior A team who made it to the Quarter Finals of the ISDA Competition against Riverview and lost by a small margin hosted at Queenwood. This is an emotional loss for this team, as it is their last debate for SCEGGS ever. The debaters have been involved in debating for many years and have not only grown in their debating skills, however, grown in their friendship and team comradery. They are to be congratulated on their commitment to debating, they will be missed.

Further special mention to the Primary A team who have qualified for the Semi Finals of the ISDA Competition this Friday evening against Knox Grammar hosted at Monte. They won their Quarter Finals after arriving directly from camp and have shown grit and determination this season – best of luck to these girls!

Archdale Competition – Tuesday Evenings

Debaters are currently up to Round 3 in the Archdale Competition. Round 1 was a huge success with the Year 7A, 7B, 8A, 8B, 9, 10 and Senior Archdale teams all won their respective debates against Wenona on the topic of Education.  Well done to all teams for their fantastic start to the season.

SCEGGS Darlinghurst hosted an exciting round of the Archdale Debating Round 2 on Tuesday 20 May against Kambala with Year 7A, 8A and Junior teams winning their debates on the topic of Politics in Australia.

The round this week of Archdale saw SCEGGS travel to Tara which saw every team record a victory.

Round 4 will be hosted at SCEGGS.

For all away debates, a bus will be transporting debaters back to the Jacaranda Gate as the final debates approximately commence at 7.30pm. Please refer to Clipboard for all information and links for maps if debaters are being picked up by a parent/carer.

Some of the topics for the debates this term were as follows:

  • Year 10 Archdale – “That the liberal party should implement a minimum quota of female candidates selected to run for winnable seats in the federal election”.
  • Year 7 and 8 Archdale – That the Prime Minister of Australia should be elected by popular vote at the federal election
  • Primary A ISDA – that voting should be compulsory
  • Year 10 ISDA – that we regret the narrative that climate change is an individual responsibility

A special thanks to all the wonderful students who supported Debating thus far as timekeepers and chairpeople in both ISDA and Eastside. Overall, SCEGGS performed well across all competitions and students not only developed their debating skills, however, built on their collaboration, showed commitment and were courageous against competitive teams.

We thank all debaters for their involvement this season and look forward to the Archdale season ahead.
