While the lessons are free, there will be a cost involved in the purchase of theory books and registration for exams. Mr. Gresham will contact parents with recommendations for grade levels before any purchases are made. Please contact Mr. David Gresham if you have any questions.

Contemporary Strings Soirees

Thursday 12 September 1.10-1.40pm in DB1 & Thursday 19 September 1.10-1.40pm in DB1

All string players in Contemporary Strings are invited to perform a short solo at one of two lunchtime concertsbeing held this term. Performances of this nature, in front of a supportive and appreciative audience are vital for a musician’s development and all players are encouraged to perform and support their friends. Mrs Sweeney will be organising the solo concert programs during Contemporary Strings rehearsals over the coming weeks. Please discuss with your instrument tutor a short solo piece that might be suitable to perform. Girls are also very welcome to perform a duet with a friend! Piano accompaniment will be provided at both concerts.

Co-curricular Music Commitment Policy (Secondary)

Students and parents are reminded that the Co-curricular Music Commitment Policy is now in place and there will be consequences for late arrivals and unexplained absence from rehearsals and performance. We expect full commitment from students who wish to participate in important performances, competitions, and tours. For more information click here.

Thank you to the students who always do the right thing and communicate in advance with the Music Department. We appreciate you!

Anticz: Our Punk Journey from the Garage to the Stage

Earlier this year, I joined forces with a few friends from a music program to form Anticz, a band with a passion for creating high-energy punk music. We were eager to push beyond the boundaries of what we’d been playing and dive into a sound that truly energized us. Our music draws inspiration from bands like Hole and Amyl and the Sniffers, giving us a raw, gritty vibe that we’re proud to call our own.

Our band is a collaborative effort. Sal, our lead singer, writes most of the lyrics and comes up with many of the musical ideas. George, our drummer, and I jump in to add our own touches, bringing the songs to life with a blend of each of our influences. We rehearse in Stanmore at George’s house, but our performances have taken us all over Sydney—from pubs and festivals to band competitions, and even a few gigs in Wollongong!

Performing is what I love most about being in Anticz. There’s something incredibly exhilarating about standing on stage, expressing whatever comes to mind, and having a room full of people engage with you as an entertainer. Each band member pours their own passions into the music, making every song a unique blend of our collective personalities. This sense of shared creativity is also why I love participating in school music programs like CVE, Contemporary Band, Holst, and Songwriting. To me, the artist and their art are almost inseparable, and that connection is something truly beautiful.

Just last weekend, Anticz took part in a band competition. As the newest band with the youngest members, we were thrilled to place as runners-up and even more excited to win the audience vote! We’re planning to continue performing around Sydney and are currently on the lookout for a bass player so I can fully embrace playing lead guitar.

We’d love to see some SCEGGS faces at our shows! If you’re interested in following our journey, you can find us on Instagram at here.
