Term 3 Guest Speaker – Lucy Dahill

The P&F warmly invite you to hear from communications expert Lucy Dahill as she presents:

Skills for Life – Parenting for Independence

Lucy brings with her a wealth of experience in a variety of industries from media to healthcare and has just submitted a Doctoral Thesis titled ‘Words Matter, A mixed methods investigation of perceived parental comments on adolescents’ weight, shape, and eating’. Of interest, is how much of what we communicate is non-verbal and founded on a variety of influences. Lucy currently works as a Youth Worker in a High School and, although her primary area of focus is teenagers, what is clear from the work she has done through her working life with children and families, the foundations for communication in adolescence are founded on what children have seen, experienced and communicated to them through their parents in the early years. She continues post-doctoral studies in this area through academic research, podcasts and book writing.

The foundation in all Lucy’s projects is the importance of decency and respect in our relationships with ourselves and each other and the importance of finding our voice in expression. Lucy is a parent of three, now adult, children and has a wealth of experience to draw on from her own parenting role to share in her presentations. She has learnt through experience, it takes a village to raise a child, hence the resources she provides to support parents are contributions to that village that can be accessed by busy parents.

Anticz: Our Punk Journey from the Garage to the Stage

Earlier this year, I joined forces with a few friends from a music program to form Anticz, a band with a passion for creating high-energy punk music. We were eager to push beyond the boundaries of what we’d been playing and dive into a sound that truly energized us. Our music draws inspiration from bands like Hole and Amyl and the Sniffers, giving us a raw, gritty vibe that we’re proud to call our own.

Our band is a collaborative effort. Sal, our lead singer, writes most of the lyrics and comes up with many of the musical ideas. George, our drummer, and I jump in to add our own touches, bringing the songs to life with a blend of each of our influences. We rehearse in Stanmore at George’s house, but our performances have taken us all over Sydney—from pubs and festivals to band competitions, and even a few gigs in Wollongong!

Performing is what I love most about being in Anticz. There’s something incredibly exhilarating about standing on stage, expressing whatever comes to mind, and having a room full of people engage with you as an entertainer. Each band member pours their own passions into the music, making every song a unique blend of our collective personalities. This sense of shared creativity is also why I love participating in school music programs like CVE, Contemporary Band, Holst, and Songwriting. To me, the artist and their art are almost inseparable, and that connection is something truly beautiful.

Just last weekend, Anticz took part in a band competition. As the newest band with the youngest members, we were thrilled to place as runners-up and even more excited to win the audience vote! We’re planning to continue performing around Sydney and are currently on the lookout for a bass player so I can fully embrace playing lead guitar.

We’d love to see some SCEGGS faces at our shows! If you’re interested in following our journey, you can find us on Instagram at here.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

Nominations for Art Captain 2024/25 are now invited!

Year 10 and 11 Art students are eligible to apply and students have been emailed Application Forms.

The Art Captain is a new role instituted last year and is a special position that requires special skills, values and attitudes. We are looking for a student who can do the following and more!

  • Invent and co-ordinate art related activities and events that engage students across the Secondary School
  • Lead others and form sub committees to organise Art related events and activities
  • Make speeches and announcements in Assemblies and at Openings and exhibitions
  • Write for, support and engage with the SCOPE Art magazine team
  • Liaise with the Visual Arts Department regularly

If you would like to apply, please complete the application and forward it to Ms Jackson by Friday of Week 1 in Term 4.

Interviews will be held in Term 4 and the position will be announced and commence in Week 3.

We take this opportunity to thank Jade Brennan who is our outgoing Captain for 2024. Her excellent efforts and initiative distinguished her in this role. We could not have asked for a more outstanding inaugural Captain, she has set the bar high approaching all aspects of the role in a calm and level headed manner and her organisational skills and maturity were assets. We trust that she will use many of the skills and attitudes gained in her studies of Art to flourish in her future beyond SCEGGS.

With our best wishes and gratitude Jade!

On behalf of the Visual Arts Department

Ashley Marie Marcos Award

Applications for The Ashley Marie Marcos Award are now open for 2024. This award is open to all Year 11 Visual Arts students.

Ashley Marie Marcos is an Old Girl (Class of 2004) who generously supports a Year 11 Visual Arts student in applying for a short course to explore, develop, or learn skills and techniques to assist with the development of their Year 12 artwork. This is usually undertaken during the holiday period between Years 11 and 12 so students can apply what they have learned in Year 12.

The value of this award is $500. This can be used to fund all or part of a course. Students need to nominate which specific course they will be attending in their application and how this will help develop and extend skills in relation to making the Body of Work in Year 12. The criteria and application form has been emailed to students.

We encourage all Year 11 Art students to apply!

Applications close: Monday September 9

Last year’s recipient says:

Receiving the Ashley Marie Marcos Award, I was able to attend a term long painting course in Term 4 of Year 11 at NAS which crucially enabled me to further develop my painting skills. I had the opportunity to experiment with my ideas and inspirations in which I applied my newfound knowledge into the development and creation of my Body of Work. This course enabled me to regain my passion for creating art as I gained new confidence. Meeting with Ashley in Term 1 of Year 12 provided me with an opportunity to learn from her life experiences and further discuss my directions for my work. I am deeply grateful that Ashley gave me this experience as I have fostered new ideas about art practice.

Paris Olympics

Congratulations to Sienna Green (Class of 2022) on winning an Olympic Silver Medal for the Stingers Water Polo team! We are all so very proud of this incredible achievement.

Touch

Well done to the following students who competed at the NSW All Schools Touch Finals that were held at St Mary’s on Tuesday: Bella Campbell (Year 9), Jaime Currell (Year 9), Olivia Davis (Year 10), Marni Hootman (Year 9), Lola Hush (Year 10), Sadie Juneja (Year 10), Summer McCarthy (Year 10), Helena O’Brien (Year 10), Rosie Pallett (Year 9), Alexa Silverton (Year 9), Chloe Silverton (Year 9), Annaliese Stackpool (Year 10), Lily Stafford (Year 10) and Ava Weekes (Year 10).

The team competed against some of the best teams for their age in NSW over 6 rounds and placed 3rd in their pool. They narrowly missed out on the finals after some close matches against Hunter Sports High and St John’s Dubbo in particular.

The team should be extremely proud of the effort, camaraderie, sportsmanship, and unwavering determination that everyone displayed. We can’t wait until the touch season starts in Term 4.

Students Driving to Sport

As more of our students are gaining their driver’s licences, it is timely to remind everyone that no student is to drive another student to or from school, sports training sessions or matches, or any other co-curricular event or activity.

Due to safety concerns, particularly those associated with inexperienced drivers, we strongly encourage all students to use the buses provided to and from sporting venues.

Please refer to page 18 of the SCEGGS School Diary.

Primary Sports News

Primary Sports News

I hope everyone has enjoyed watching the action from the Paris Olympics. There were so many memorable moments over the 19-day competition. Sienna Green (Class of 2022) achieved a silver medal in the Women’s Water polo and Stage 3 students had the opportunity to partake in some Olympic-type events during their Sports Hall lunchtime session, including the Pool Noodle Javelin, Basketball Shooting, and Football Passing. What a fantastic job they did! A shout out must go to Year 4 who celebrated the Olympics in style.

IPSHA AFL

All three IPSHA AFL teams had convincing wins for Round 3 of the competition. Well done to the Year 6 team who showed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship in their game against Ravenswood. It was great to see them focusing on their passing and supporting each other both on and off the field. Holly Shennan (Year 6) had one of her strongest performances to date, leading by example and executing several hand passes to help her team to a 36-1 victory.

Congratulations girls. It was great to see you in action and ‘shining your light’!

IPSHA Touch Football

IPSHA Touch Football came away with one win from their five games. The 6A team had a close game against Queenwood and came away with a 4-1 win. They showed a good ‘drive’ to get the ball forward and took advantage of space at opportune times to score their touchdowns. The 5A team showed improved attack in a high scoring game, although couldn’t overcome a strong St Andrew’s team going down 6-3. The 4A team drew 5-5 against Kincoppal. What a close game!

A reminder there is no primary sport on 17 August due to the Mid-Term break.

With IPSHA in full swing and many of our SCEGGS teams doing well in their respective divisions, a reminder of the IPSHA Game Management Guidelines that are in place to support the enjoyment and participation across IPSHA competitions.

Game Management Guidelines

IPSHA Core Values include: Participation, Progression of core skills / tactical strategies and, above all, Enjoyment of the game. We should praise players and encourage good sportsmanship. Whilst teams will not always be evenly matched, we endeavour to keep games meaningful for both schools participating in the contest. Should a game be one-sided, ie. denoted by highly uneven possession, territory or score then strategies need to be implemented to ‘even up’ the contest.

Year 3 Minkey

The Year 3 Minkey competition continued with Round 2 at Ascham. It is great to see all the girls organised with their equipment for both training and games. Mrs Sweeney is proud of your efforts so far, particularly working as a team and applying feedback from the coaches to improve your game. Keep up the good team spirit.

Snowsports

Good luck to the Primary Students who are competing at the NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships next week.

Student Achievements

Well done to all the girls who completed the City2Surf last weekend. What a big event it has turned into with thousands of participants walking and running the 14km course. What an excellent way to be active! Adelaide Cowan (Year 6) managed a personal best time.

Well done, Adelaide!

Upcoming Dates:
SCEGGS Mid-Term break Saturday 17 August (No Primary Sport)
Week 6 IPSHA Athletics Wednesday 28 August (Selected Students have been contacted)

Volunteer Recruitment for REELise Film Festival

Volunteer Recruitment for REELise Film Festival

REELise is a movement, enabled by young people, to create a safe online space. A space that is imaginative, innovative, empathetic, and respectful, where young people can feel secure to tell their stories, be heard and have a positive impact. A space they want to occupy.

Formed in 2013 to address the mental health consequences of cyberbullying and digital life issues on mental health, REELise recognised change needed to be driven by the actions and stories of young people.

Through programs like the REELise Film Festival, workshops to support filmmaking for a cause, plus volunteering and youth leadership programs, we use the power of the same devices and platforms used for bullying and other social harms, to foster creativity, communication and connection; and influence change for the better.

REElise is looking for student volunteers to support our Festival on Saturday 17 August at Randwick Ritz.

From The Chaplain

From The Chaplain

If you are like me, I have found myself distracted by the Olympics for the past few weeks, watching sports that I had no idea about (team air pistoling and speed climbing come to mind). I also followed the success of SCEGGS Old Girl, Sienna Green, as she gave it her all for the Stingers Women’s Water Polo Team. What a great achievement! I haven’t been able to land a scoop with her yet for the podcast. As we continue in the Olympic spirit, I thought I would replay the conversation with another SCEGGS Olympian, Marina Carrier, that was recorded last year.

The SCEGGS Podcast “Walk The Mile” Revisited: Episode 33 The Olympic Dream with Marina Carrier

The journey of a full-time athlete can be a unique and bumpy experience in the effort to succeed at their given sport. This episode is a conversation with Marina Carrier, an Old Girl from the Class of 2014, who has represented Australia in the Modern Pentathlon in the Olympics. She talks about her years devoted to the sport, the things she learnt, the highs and the lows. We also discuss what its like to face retirement in her twenties. A very insightful and interesting discussion that I hope you enjoy.

And a reminder that we are published on Spotify, Apple, Google Podcast and Deezer, so you can access it easier from your preferred device. I always welcome your feedback or any ideas you may have for further episodes. You will find each podcast as they are produced in this newsletter and on the other platforms as well as our website.
