Snowsports
We extend our congratulations to the 60 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 who participated in the NSW Regional Championships at Perisher. This highly competitive event attracted over 1000 individuals throughout the week. Prior to the championships, our students engaged in a series of training sessions and Secondary School Camp with Perisher Instructors, allowing them to refine their skills and deliver remarkable performances. As a result, we will have nearly 60% of our team progressing to the State Interschools Championships in August.
The week began on a high note with our snowboarders achieving fantastic results. Our Division 3 team secured third place in both the Snowboard GS and Snowboard Cross events. Notably, our Division 2 Snowboard Teams put in exceptional effort, considering it was their first time competing. Furthermore, our youngest Division 5 teams claimed first and second positions, with Christina Yang (Year 4) earning third place in the individual Snowboard GS category, and Eno Lin (Year 1) finishing third in the Snowboard Cross competition.
In Division 6 (Kindergarten to Year 2), two teams competed in Ski Cross and Alpine events, achieving first and third places respectively. Michelle Zhang (Year 1) secured second place individually in Alpine, while Evelyn Zhu (Year 2) finished individual second in Ski Cross. These outstanding results mean that eight out of ten Pymble athletes will advance to the state championships.
In Division 5 (Year 3 and Year 4), nine athletes competed in the Alpine and Ski Cross competitions. Despite challenging conditions, our Division 5 Teams achieved commendable results. Our Alpine team secured third place and our Moguls team claimed second place. Special recognition goes to Christina Yang (Year 4) for her individual achievement of third place. Additionally, our Ski Cross Team finished fourth and will also progress to the State Championships in August.
The oldest athletes in our Junior School, competing in Division 4 (Year 5 and Year 6), brought their experience from the previous season, with the exciting addition of Anna Smart (Year 5). In the Alpine competition, both teams will advance to the state level, finishing in first and fifth places. Additionally, our teams secured first and third positions in the Ski Cross competition, resulting in all seven Division 4 athletes progressing to the State Championships. Notably, Eloise Gavagna (Year 6) achieved third place individually in Ski Cross. Because of these exceptional achievements from our Division 4 athletes, all seven students will qualify for the State Interschools Championships.
Congratulations to Hilary Eyers (Year 6) for her exceptional individual performances. Hilary finished second in Alpine, first in Moguls, and second in Ski X. Additionally, she received a two-day Moguls training scholarship from Perisher for the second consecutive year.
As the week progressed, our Middle School athletes mirrored the success of their younger counterparts, achieving exceptional results. In Division 3 (Year 7 and Year 8), impressive performances from both team and individual categories were seen. In Alpine, our teams finished in first and ninth places, with Georgia Yuen (Year 8) securing second place individually and Aurora Zhang (Year 7) finishing third. Similar accomplishments were observed in the Ski Cross competition, with Georgia Yuen finishing first individually and Allegra Taubenschlag (Year 8) contributing to the team’s first place finish by securing third place.
In Division 2, our Alpine Team qualified for the state championships, finishing in fifth place, while Arabella Wheatley (Year 9) claimed first place individually. Additionally, our Division 2 Ski Cross team finished third, with Arabella once again securing first place individually which is a massive achievement.
Finally, our Senior School athletes in Division 1 (Year 11 and Year 12) had an outstanding conclusion to the week. Our team secured first place in both the Alpine and Ski Cross competitions, a remarkable achievement. Individually, Sienna Stephens (Year 12) excelled, finishing first in Alpine, second in Moguls, and fourth in Alpine. These individual results stand as a testament to her dedication and commitment to the sport. Alessandra Braysich (Year 11) showcased her talent by achieving second place in both Alpine and Ski Cross, despite having recently returned from the Henley Rowing Tour just two days prior.
While it is crucial to acknowledge our remarkable achievers, I want to extend congratulations to the rest of our Pymble team, many of whom competed in the Interschools competition for the first time. I would like to give a special mention to our newest members in the Secondary School: Elena Duta (Year 11), Esther Essey (Year 10), Zara Simpson (Year 9), Lucy Simpson (Year 8), Rose Kirkby (Year 9), Elisa Cui (Year 8), Elizabeth Lien (Year 8), and Audrey An (Year 9). After a few years at Pymble, they have taken the leap to join our program for the 2023 season! I would also like to recognise our students who recently transitioned to Secondary School this year: Allegra Taubenschlag (Year 8), Imogen Jones (Year 7), Bella Legge-Hughes (Year 7), Rebecca Mak (Year 7), Helsa Hui (Year 7), Aurora Zhang (Year 7), and Ellie Zhao (Year 7). We hope your introduction to Secondary School Snowsports has been positive, and I have thoroughly enjoyed observing your development of new friendships, your willingness to embrace challenges, and your demonstration of resilience on the mountain.
We extend our congratulations to everyone involved, including parents, for a remarkable week! The sense of community and commitment to Pymble Snowsports is truly exceptional. Bring on States!
