From the Principal

From the Principal

And we’re back! Hello and welcome to Term 3. Hopefully, your family had a great break and is ready for the term ahead. Our Year 12 girls were especially productive, many bunkered down in the Senior School Centre on Study Camp ahead of HSC trials starting in a few weeks. Thank you to our staff who worked over the break and continue to work to support the Year 12s in the lead-up to their exams. I was fortunate to enjoy a long-awaited trip away with Matt and my dear parents, who live interstate. This trip was planned and then cancelled some 13 years ago when Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer, so it was a very special time with them and one that I will hold in my heart forever.

Welcome to our Pymble family

An extra warm welcome to all our new students and families, including the 18 students who are here on exchange from Argentina, England, Japan, New Zealand and Scotland, as well as new staff members who join us this term, including our Deputy Principal – Academics (K-12), Mrs Christine Kenny. Mrs Kenny was interviewed at Combined Assembly on Tuesday by two of our Year 12 Prefects, Manni Lin (Technology) and Angie Wang (Academic Learning), where the girls discovered Mrs Kenny is an English teacher who is kind, thoughtful, friendly, loyal and trustworthy. She also enjoys brisk walks – not jogging! – and can’t live without books, coffee (flat white) or chocolate. Mrs Kenny joins us following a very successful career leading academics at Meriden School at Strathfield and we are all delighted she has joined our Pymble family.

Referencing the impending HSC trials, Manni asked Mrs Kenny: what is one thing you wish you could go back and tell yourself when you were in high school?

“I remember hearing Barack Obama speaking to College students who were about to face exams before going out into the world.

“His advice was to be a ‘can do person’. You can always think, ‘I wish I’d done more past papers, or studied more, or I wish my notes were better’, but the reality is you need to be able to work with what you’ve got.

“It helps to be a ‘can do person’,”
Mrs Kenny said.

This is so true. In my opening address for the term, I reminded students that what you achieve is only equal to the effort you are prepared to put in. Certainly, the things I have felt most proud of in my life are not the things that have been easy. I am most proud of myself when I have set a goal, worked hard, had difficulties along the way and managed to achieve that goal.

So, my question for students this week is: what are you going to get out of this term?

You could choose to wander aimlessly through the upcoming 10 weeks and have a good, possibly average, Term 3. Or you could choose to set yourself a goal and put in the work required to achieve it, understanding that setbacks along the way are inevitable, and ending the term feeling proud of what you have accomplished. It could be an academic or a friendship goal, or something to do with self-care, like getting more sleep, which is my personal goal in Term 3.

Why sleep is important

If you’re not feeling well, you can’t learn well. For this reason, our College-wide focus over the next few months is to encourage all students to have the recommended amount of sleep for their age group in order to turn up each day as their best self, feeling and functioning at an optimal level.

Junior School students need 9-11 hours per night.

Secondary School students need 8-10 hours per night.

Adults need 7-9 hours per night.

Science tells us that sleeping well will improve your learning. The scientific formula for optimised learning is best summarised in the diagram below: study or learn, have a break and do something that releases adrenaline or cortisol to time stamp the information, then sleep or rest to consolidate that learning in your brain.

Sleep is just one of the six areas we will be focusing on in Mind-Body-Sprit time over the coming months as one of the best, most enjoyable and, let’s face it, cheapest ways to positively impact on your health, wellness and learning.

The Sleep Tracking Challenge is on!

To achieve my personal goal of getting the seven hours of sleep per night that allow me to show up as my best self each day, I have started tracking my sleep with the free app called Sleep Tracker. And I have set the same challenge for our Secondary students and staff. There’s a celebratory prize for the Compass Group (and the staff faculty) that is the first to prove all members have tracked their sleep for a week. The challenge is on!

Say hello to our HOLAs

Starting from this term, I will be devoting a section of this column to shining a spotlight on our amazing academic staff, including our Heads of Learning Area or HOLAs as we who love an acronym are inclined to call them. This week, it is my pleasure to introduce our HOLA – Geography, Business and Economics, Mr Trevor Lucas, who has been teaching Business Studies, Economics, Geography, Commerce and Financial Literacy at Pymble since January 2017.

Trevor, what was the ‘aha’ moment that led you into teaching?

“It was volunteering for Youth off the Streets, a not-for-profit organisation that supports young people in need to build a positive future. I found that helping others was a deeply rewarding experience and that I was able to connect easily with people through story sharing and listening. Learning through service underpins the ethos of the Geography, Business and Economics department and is something I am very proud to be part of.”

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role at Pymble?

“It would have to be working with a collective group of educators in an inclusive environment that celebrates student and teacher success. I love being part of a leadership team that drives education and encourages taking calculated risks.”

Work aside, tell us a fun fact about yourself.

“I love country music and fishing.”

Finally, finish this sentence: If I could impart one life lesson to our students, it would be…

“Embrace travel and enjoy being young – don’t grow up too quickly if you don’t have to.”

Thank you to Trevor and all our wonderful staff at Pymble who are ‘can do’ people devoted to creating an inspiring, supportive and inclusive educational environment where all students are encouraged to pursue their individual passions and goals.

And thank you in advance to our parents and carers for supporting our sleep initiative this term. We would love you to encourage your whole family to join our challenge and discover firsthand how much better you feel and function each day.

Happy tracking, and best wishes for a wonderful term ahead.

From the Junior School

From the Junior School

From the Head of Junior School

It’s wonderful to be back and to hear all the many varied adventures our Junior School girls have had over the holiday break. For those who travelled, I hope you had safe journeys and I hope those who visited family and loved ones far away have come home with special memories of precious family time. I enjoyed glorious, long days over in England with all my family and set up our eldest daughter, Hannah, ready to begin her psychology studies at University over in England. I’ve come back to school feeling energised and ready for the challenge of a new term and it’s evident our girls are similarly prepared for their new term and new learning challenges.

Our Kindergarten girls enjoyed yarning about their holidays and used wool to show the connections between the things they did over the holiday.  Year 6 have been reciting classic poems they have chosen to learn, and I was thrilled that Arianna Ng, Wendy Wei, Charlie Sadler and Grace Jacobs came up to share their poems with Mrs Davey and me at lunchtime. Year 2 are also exploring poems and I’m excited to watch their passion for poetry grow.

I was lucky enough to start my morning in Year 1T and was delighted to hear the girls unpack their understanding of their kindness focus for the day ‘being kind to myself’ as they begin their learning adventures this term:

I can be kind to myself by not being mean to myself when I get something wrong. I can just try again – Penelope Lam

I can not get cross with myself when it’s hard – Luci de Bilde

I can remember that when I am making mistakes I am learning and growing – Isabella Isaac

Mrs Bird and I also enjoyed listening to a group of our Sokratis Junior students, Zoe Ababio, Maisie Borg and Nadya Faheem (Year 3) talking about their passion for their project which is centred around their research question: How did scientists research objects in the past without technology? The girls explained how much they have enjoyed the freedom to research an area of interest, to collaborate and share their findings, ideas and wonderings and how they are loving the chance to determine how they present all the information they have already collated.

This term we are lucky to welcome 9 new families to our Junior School and we extend a warm welcome and hug to these girls and their families: Celine Huang (Kindergarten), Emilia Stead (Year 1), Evelyn Chiu (Year 2) and sister Genevieve Chiu (Year 4), Melissa Wang (Year 2), Kelsie Huang (Year 3), Queenie Jia (Year 5), Moxuan Zhang (Year 3) and sister Moyan Zhang (Year 5). Please join me in making these families settle into our community and to feel connected as soon as possible.

Congratulations – a new baby in our Junior School community

Mrs Lexi Phillips and her husband, Nick welcomed their second daughter, Penelope to the world on 14th July 2023. Penelope is utterly gorgeous and much loved by her parents and her big sister, Arabella.

Kindness focus for Term 3

This term our focus is on Kindness to the Environment. I am delighted to be leading this focus with our new Kindness Captains for Semester 2, Jessamy Facer and Amna Syed. As they explained they are looking forward to being role models for our younger girls and inspiring and empowering them to lead with kindness in our world. They were passionate in their hope that one day no unkind world will ever be spoken in their world. Amna and Jessamy are passionate about the environment; Amna is keen to inspire us all to think about reducing (or eliminating) plastics in the ocean and Jessamy would like us to do more to protect the bees as our survival depends on bees as our major pollinators.

Each week Jessamy and Amna will appear in our newsletter with a kindness thought and/or challenge for the week. Please encourage your daughter to reflect on the thought or participate in the challenge as we look to grow our girls as leaders in their communities through kindness.

Kindness Captains’ Thought for the Week: ‘Think before you do’

Kindness Captains’ Challenge for the Week: Pick up one piece of rubbish this week

In their words:

‘If the world would stop and listen to children about the power of kindness, all the unkindness in our world would stop and it would be a better place for us all.’

This term the girls will unpack Kindness to the Environment through 4 facts:

  1. I can reduce, reuse and recycle
  2. I can bring nude food to school
  3. I can pick up litter
  4. I can use less water

Alice Wu and Oliva Guo (Year 5) have kindly volunteered to work on creating posters for each of these facts which will then be shared with all grades throughout the Junior School.

Plastic Free July – an initiative led by our Sustainability and Kindness Captains

As we commence our focus on kindness to the environment our Sustainability Captains. Oriana Fenton and Richielynne Xiong and our Kindness Captains are working under the leadership of Mrs Kate Giles to launch Plastic Free July which invites us all to choose to refuse to use one single use plastic in our daily lives. This initiative encourages us all to make small changes so that together we can have a huge and positive impact on our planet.

Watch this short video which introduces this global initiative.

We now have a fabulously bright and colourful cow in our K-2 courtyard (special thanks to Mrs Lara Bird and Mr Steve Robinson who painted her over the holiday) who represents our focus on kindness and each of our College Houses. Kindness the Cow will stand proudly in our K-2 courtyard as a visual reminder of our Junior School focus on kindness.

Tech Connect – Year 3 Dads and Daughters, Wednesday 30 August – an evening of dancing puppets

This event will be led by Mr Dan Brown, Head of STEM K-6, Mrs Lara Bird, Deputy Head of Junior School Academics, Mrs Alison Tedesco, K-6 Robotics Coordinator and Mrs Kate Brown, Head of Junior School

Come and create your own string puppet with your daughter. Bring your puppet to life by coding a micro:bit to play music and sound. Then enjoy the magic of making your puppet dance to its own music! At the end of the evening, we can enjoy a performance by all the puppets to celebrate the fun of this collaborative evening. Girls may take home their puppet (without the micro:bit) at the end of the evening.

Girls can attend the event in mufti (school uniform is not required)

Pizza and water will be served at 7.00pm for Dads and their daughters to enjoy.

Please click here to register for the event.

From the Middle School

From the Middle School

Welcome Back to all of our Middle School families. I hope that you had a wonderful break from the school routine and that you had some time to enjoy the beautiful weather. I would like to warmly welcome Jiarui Song of Year 7 and her family to Pymble in Term 3. Over the break our Middle School girls have been involved in some exciting ventures.

I would like to thank Tala Gubara, Amelia Lee, Leila Rich, Layla Abdel-Megeed and Saja Abdel-Megeed – all of Year 8 – for generously volunteering their time and enthusiasm on the last day of their holidays. The girls were involved in helping to facilitate an afternoon at Pymble, welcoming a group of young Afghan refugees for an assortment of activities and a celebratory afternoon tea.

Joy Yin (Year 8) has won the principle piano event at Sydney Eisteddfod – Kawai Junior Piano Scholarship (11-16 Years) through three rounds of competitions. On July 15, Joy performed a recital of 25min during the final round at Chippen Street Theatre, with a program comprised of music by Bach, Haydn, Chopin and Liszt. Quoting Joy’s piano teacher Dr. Wojciech Wisniewski’s comments “This is a serious accomplishment achieved in such competitive category with Joy being only 13 years old. It’s a worthy moment for celebration of hard work, dedication and love for music”. In addition, Joy has also won the event Piano Recital (14 years old) on July 4 at Town Hall.

Students across Pymble competed in the Regional Interschools Snowsports Championships held in Perisher. In Division 3 (Year 7 and Year 8), we witnessed impressive performances both in team and individual categories. In Alpine, our teams finished in first and ninth places, with Georgia Yuen (Year 8) securing second place individually and Aurora Zhang (Year 7) finishing third. Similar accomplishments were observed in the Ski Cross competition, with Georgia Yuen finishing first individually and Allegra Taubenschlag (Year 8) contributing to the team’s first-place finish by securing third place. We would like to congratulate all Middle School students who represented Pymble. What a wonderful achievement.

A message from Mr Riley, Head of Upper School

Welcome back to Term 3!

It was great to see the girls adorning our Upper School spaces in the bright winter sunshine this week, and to hear the laughter return. It was a busy return to school with five new Upper School students starting and 18 exchange students arriving from Argentina, Scotland, England, New Zealand and Japan! We look forward to sharing their stories from home and encourage our girls to look out for them (you can’t miss them in their wonderful school uniforms) and to approach them for a chat. We also said goodbye to Maddie and Evelyn who are heading to South Africa for the next seven weeks and look forward to their exchange partners arriving later this week.

The break was a busy one for lots of our girls, with Upper School students showcasing their talents at Oxford University, on the slopes at Perisher and Thredbo, and many (including the amazing Lethy Levy) involved in sport outside of school.

This term we will begin discussions about leadership positions. I look forward to speaking to the girls about the importance of influence as a leader and shaping their understanding of the difference between intent and impact. Over the break I found this article that highlights the foundations of impactful leadership and hope that it might frame an interesting dinner table conversation in the week ahead.

From the Senior School

From the Senior School

Welcome back to all Senior School families. I hope that you found some time to have some fun and relaxation over the beautiful weather that we enjoyed over the Term break.

I would like to take this opportunity to respectfully remind parents regarding the process for applying for leave during the school day. If your daughter needs to leave the campus for an appointment or other commitment, could you please email the Senior School Office at seniorschool@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au before 8:00am on the day. Please understand that due to our Duty of Care, we cannot allow students to leave the campus without this notice.

Many of the Year 12 girls have reported some productive time over the break, reviewing their notes, practising past papers and preparing for their HSC Trial examinations in a fortnight. It is never too late to modify routines and schedules for improvement, so please encourage your daughter to continue working towards her academic goals. Equally, it is important to maintain time for exercise, socialising and feeding our spirits. Please assist your daughter in keeping a healthy sense of perspective at this time, as this is vital for her wellbeing and also achieving her best.

Year 11 have also had a busy start to the term. My thanks to all students who have submitted an application for a Prefect leadership role in the College. I appreciate that this takes courage and commitment and can sometimes lead to disappointment for those who are unsuccessful for this particular role. In Term 4, there are further leadership roles offered to students for their consideration. All Year 11 students should remember that as they prepare to enter Year 12, they are role models and leaders for the younger students, and their support of their younger peers is very much appreciated.

Year 11 students involved in Sony Camp have been busily completing some training modules and all students are working towards their Yearly Examinations, which take place in Weeks 7 and 8. I have spoken to the students about some techniques and strategies in preparation.

From the Boarding School

From the Boarding School

There is nothing like the return of our Boarders to bring a smile to my face and put a spring in my step. Monday night did not disappoint, with squeals of joy as the girls were reunited with each other after three weeks away. It was, however, bittersweet to see the girls sadly farewell their parents and I am grateful to our wonderful families for the trust you place in us in leaving your girls in our care. I know you miss them and I thank you for sharing them with us during the term time.

Staff News

Our hard-working Deputy Director of Boarding, Katie White, is enjoying some very well-deserved Long Service Leave for the first three weeks of term. I am delighted to announce that Kate Inglis will be our Acting Deputy Director of Boarding during this time, while Vicki McGilvray will step into Kate’s role of Head of Goodlet House. I am equally delighted to advise that Courtney Scott (Assistant Head of Year 7&8, Boarding) will take charge of leave for Term 3.  I am beyond grateful to have such a capable team of staff who are so generous in sharing their talents and time.

Love It – Kate Inglis (Acting Deputy Director of Boarding)

Our Term 3 Love It program promises to be a real hit and it was wonderful to see the girls flicking through the program, planning out their adventures for the term. We already have many girls signed up for mini golf this weekend and we are counting on a beautiful day of sunshine when we head out to Manly on Sunday. We will celebrate Christmas in July on Sunday evening with a special Christmas dinner and festivities planned.

You can download your personal copy of the Term 3 Love It program at the following link. If you would like to join us on any of our adventures, we would love to have you on board.

Boarders Shine

It was a busy holiday for our Boarders and great to hear of their many successes. I will continue to share these highlights in the weeks to come but for now the spotlight is on Allegra Taubenschlag (Year 8) from Red Hill and Alethea (Lethy) Levy (Year 10) from Lake Albert.

Allegra represented Pymble at the Interschools Ski Championships. Pymble did brilliantly overall, and Allegra came away with two team golds and an individual bronze. These medals represents years of hard work and commitment and we are so proud to hear of Allegra’s success.

Congratulations to resident football superstar, Lethy who has been selected to play for Football NSW at the HiFA Peace Memorial 2023 International Tournament in Japan. Lethy has gone from strength to strength in her football career playing for NSW Country and being invited to play in a Football Australia elite match earlier this year where her natural talent was recognised by selectors. We couldn’t be prouder of Lethy who successfully manages a busy training schedule, her academic studies and always has time to be a beautiful Boarding sister while excelling in the highly competitive field of Women’s football.

Pymble comes to Narrabri

Tonight I am lucky enough to be catching up with our extended Boarding family in Moree before heading off to the Narrabri Boarding Expo on Friday morning. If you are in the area, please do call in and say hello. I would love to see you!

View From My Window

Hi, my name is Saskia but most of my friends just call me Sas. I am currently in Year 11 and have been in boarding since Year 7. I come from a small town near Tamworth called Nundle. Nundle is known for its gold mining heritage and its Great Nundle Dog Race. I live 7km out of town on my property called “Alkoomie”, where my family run black Simmental/Angus cattle and breed Australian stock horses.

My favourite thing to do in the holidays would have to be riding my horse Apollo. When I look out my window, I see my front paddock with a couple bulls walking around and I hear my dad in the kitchen about to start the day. At home I spend most of my time mustering, relaxing or working on the farm. Usually my dad, mum and I are on the horses while my brother is on his motorbike.

On the farm we have lots of animals including my goats: Ebony, Patch and George, my cat Mindy, our family dog Jolie, a little French bulldog and a bunch of sheep, cattle, and horses. My mum works at the hospital in Tamworth in admin and is currently studying psychology. My dad works on our farm and another farm just down the road. As a family we spend a lot of time playing card games, especially on the weekends when they come up. As a Boarder here at Pymble, I’m very much looking forward to my final year although I will miss all the girls so much.

Welcome back to Term 3!  We hope you had a restful break with the family whether it was at home or travelling within Australia or overseas. It is always wonderful to have time to stop and even though many of you would have continued with work or other commitments, it would have been great to have the children at home.

For the Year 12s this marks their last term of school, and with it many challenges and even some sadness. Today in Chapel I spoke to Senior School about Jesus’ parable of the mustard seed, on how small it is, and yet when it does become a tree even though not a big one, it offers shelter to the birds for rest. I shared with them the impact of small choices and how they can still have big consequences.

I also sat in a Year 8 RE class where the students presented their social justice tasks and spoke about the topics of poverty and refugees. I was so impressed by their deep thinking and reflection on what we can as a society do to ease the stresses of poverty in the lives of fellow Australians and of course the world.

Everything in life calls us to take small, intentional steps and move forward towards a goal. In Christianity as in many faiths, we are called to look within ourselves and share with those lesser fortunate therefore tapping into a generosity of spirit that ends up refilling our cups with plenty. A cup filled with plenty of love, joy, freedom and peace.

I hope this term is a blessed one for all of you. We wish our Muslim families a happy New Year and hope your celebration is graced with much joy and sharing.

I am looking forward to the term with Mrs Antill-Cassie as our new Assistant Chaplain as she joins our existing Chaplaincy team of Mrs O’Brien and myself. Please keep us in your prayers. Have a lovely term and may the good Lord continue to bless you in your journey here at Pymble

Blessings and peace.

It has been a pleasure to read of the outstanding achievements of Music and Language Arts students at the end of the Term 2.

Students in all of the Pymble Performing Arts areas will embark upon a busy term in both co-curricular and curriculum contexts. Of particular importance are the various HSC practical examinations in Music, Drama and Dance. We hold these Year 12 students in our thoughts and hearts as they embark upon these examinations as a culmination of academic study of their respective performance crafts.

Please ensure that you remain aware of the particular requirements of eisteddfod and competition events in this busy term.

National Level 7 NSW Team representative – Aimee Yap (Year 7)

From Monday 26 to Saturday 29 June, we travelled to Brisbane to attend the Border Challenge National Competition at the Sleeman Arena.  Aimee Yap (Year 7) represented New South Wales in a team of six gymnasts.  Aimee placed 9th Overall and the NSW team finished in 7th position.  This was a great experience for Aimee and her first National experience.

NL5 to 7 Practice competition

Our Level 5 to 7 gymnasts attended a practice competition at All the Way Up Gymnastics in Brookvale.  Our Pymble gymnasts were able to compete in a friendly environment and receive feedback from the judges on their performance.  The gymnasts had a great time taking on constructive feedback for the upcoming State Trial on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 July.

Foam Pit Clean out

While the gymnastics program was closed for a week from Monday 10 to Thursday 13 July, the gymnastics and sport staff emptied the 135 cubic metre foam pit.  A huge amount of old foam was removed, the foam pit and under the trampoline was cleaned to the very bottom and refilled with new foam.  This was a huge job and thank you to everyone who helped.

DIVER Grading Night

On Tuesday 20 June, a DIVER grading night was held for all Divers. This was an exciting opportunity to test individual skills developed throughout the term and participate in a synchronised diving event. All divers tried their best displaying new and improved dives. It was great to see so many enthusiastic divers enjoying the camaraderie of their peers and the raw thrill that diving provides.

Congratulations to all divers that participated and assisted in the evening. We look forward to the next DIVER assessment night later in the year.

Holiday Diving

During the holiday break, the Junior Elite Diving Nationals was held in Adelaide. This was an opportunity for all Elite divers from around Australia to compete at the highest level.

Congratulations to Indie Leon Searle (Year 5) who competed in the event in both Dryland and Water Skills. This was a fantastic experience for Indie at this level and we congratulate her on her achievement and placing 7th overall.

In the last week of the holiday break, Diving held competitive/pathways and Come and Try sessions. It was fantastic to see both experienced and new divers participating in diving, learning new skills and challenging themselves on boards and platform.

Henley Royal Regatta

Congratulations to our team of six rowers: Mia Booth (Year 11), Jessica Colbran (Year 12), Megan Wood (Year 11), Tilly Morgan (Year 12), Skye Pockley (Year 11) and Alessandra Braysich (Year 11), who visited the United Kingdom recently to represent Pymble at Henley Royal Regatta, one of the world’s toughest regattas.

‘Henley Royal’ is visited by more than 300,000 people each year, who come to watch six days of elite competition in over 300+ races in knock-out style racing. Mia, Jessica, Megan and Tilly displayed tremendous bravery, stepping out of their comfort zone and putting in a solid performance in the Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup (Junior Women’s Coxless Quad). Congratulations to the Double crew of Alessandra Braysich and Skye Pockley, who won the Open Women’s Doubles at the Reading Town Regatta, racing with great determination and skill.

Snowsports

Snowsports

We extend our congratulations to the 60 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 who participated in the NSW Regional Championships at Perisher. This highly competitive event attracted over 1000 individuals throughout the week. Prior to the championships, our students engaged in a series of training sessions and Secondary School Camp with Perisher Instructors, allowing them to refine their skills and deliver remarkable performances. As a result, we will have nearly 60% of our team progressing to the State Interschools Championships in August.

The week began on a high note with our snowboarders achieving fantastic results. Our Division 3 team secured third place in both the Snowboard GS and Snowboard Cross events. Notably, our Division 2 Snowboard Teams put in exceptional effort, considering it was their first time competing. Furthermore, our youngest Division 5 teams claimed first and second positions, with Christina Yang (Year 4) earning third place in the individual Snowboard GS category, and Eno Lin (Year 1) finishing third in the Snowboard Cross competition.

In Division 6 (Kindergarten to Year 2), two teams competed in Ski Cross and Alpine events, achieving first and third places respectively. Michelle Zhang (Year 1) secured second place individually in Alpine, while Evelyn Zhu (Year 2) finished individual second in Ski Cross. These outstanding results mean that eight out of ten Pymble athletes will advance to the state championships.

In Division 5 (Year 3 and Year 4), nine athletes competed in the Alpine and Ski Cross competitions. Despite challenging conditions, our Division 5 Teams achieved commendable results. Our Alpine team secured third place and our Moguls team claimed second place. Special recognition goes to Christina Yang (Year 4) for her individual achievement of third place. Additionally, our Ski Cross Team finished fourth and will also progress to the State Championships in August.

The oldest athletes in our Junior School, competing in Division 4 (Year 5 and Year 6), brought their experience from the previous season, with the exciting addition of Anna Smart (Year 5). In the Alpine competition, both teams will advance to the state level, finishing in first and fifth places. Additionally, our teams secured first and third positions in the Ski Cross competition, resulting in all seven Division 4 athletes progressing to the State Championships. Notably, Eloise Gavagna (Year 6) achieved third place individually in Ski Cross. Because of these exceptional achievements from our Division 4 athletes, all seven students will qualify for the State Interschools Championships.

Congratulations to Hilary Eyers (Year 6) for her exceptional individual performances. Hilary finished second in Alpine, first in Moguls, and second in Ski X. Additionally, she received a two-day Moguls training scholarship from Perisher for the second consecutive year.

As the week progressed, our Middle School athletes mirrored the success of their younger counterparts, achieving exceptional results. In Division 3 (Year 7 and Year 8), impressive performances from both team and individual categories were seen. In Alpine, our teams finished in first and ninth places, with Georgia Yuen (Year 8) securing second place individually and Aurora Zhang (Year 7) finishing third. Similar accomplishments were observed in the Ski Cross competition, with Georgia Yuen finishing first individually and Allegra Taubenschlag (Year 8) contributing to the team’s first place finish by securing third place.

In Division 2, our Alpine Team qualified for the state championships, finishing in fifth place, while Arabella Wheatley (Year 9) claimed first place individually. Additionally, our Division 2 Ski Cross team finished third, with Arabella once again securing first place individually which is a massive achievement.

Finally, our Senior School athletes in Division 1 (Year 11 and Year 12) had an outstanding conclusion to the week. Our team secured first place in both the Alpine and Ski Cross competitions, a remarkable achievement. Individually, Sienna Stephens (Year 12) excelled, finishing first in Alpine, second in Moguls, and fourth in Alpine. These individual results stand as a testament to her dedication and commitment to the sport. Alessandra Braysich (Year 11) showcased her talent by achieving second place in both Alpine and Ski Cross, despite having recently returned from the Henley Rowing Tour just two days prior.

While it is crucial to acknowledge our remarkable achievers, I want to extend congratulations to the rest of our Pymble team, many of whom competed in the Interschools competition for the first time. I would like to give a special mention to our newest members in the Secondary School: Elena Duta (Year 11), Esther Essey (Year 10), Zara Simpson (Year 9), Lucy Simpson (Year 8), Rose Kirkby (Year 9), Elisa Cui (Year 8), Elizabeth Lien (Year 8), and Audrey An (Year 9). After a few years at Pymble, they have taken the leap to join our program for the 2023 season! I would also like to recognise our students who recently transitioned to Secondary School this year: Allegra Taubenschlag (Year 8), Imogen Jones (Year 7), Bella Legge-Hughes (Year 7), Rebecca Mak (Year 7), Helsa Hui (Year 7), Aurora Zhang (Year 7), and Ellie Zhao (Year 7). We hope your introduction to Secondary School Snowsports has been positive, and I have thoroughly enjoyed observing your development of new friendships, your willingness to embrace challenges, and your demonstration of resilience on the mountain.

We extend our congratulations to everyone involved, including parents, for a remarkable week! The sense of community and commitment to Pymble Snowsports is truly exceptional. Bring on States!

Holiday News And Congratulations

Pymble Chorale won their section of the Eisteddfod, with a wonderfully positive report from the adjudicator, Mr Jonathon Welch AM. Mr Schweinberger was immensely proud of the girls for their musicality and commitment. They returned to the College in time to perform for the Secondary School Ensemble Concert.

Joy Yin, Catherine Li and Chloe Lam of year 8 all competed in the Piano Recital 14 years old section at Town Hall, which was a key event for piano players thus indeed competitive. Joy received 1st place, Catherine 3rd, and Chloe a Highly Commended. Catherine also competed in the 14 years old 20 – 21st century music section and received 1st place!

The section following theirs was Piano Recital 15–16 years Old and the 15–16 years old: 20–21st century music section. Ella Liu of Year 10 received a Highly Commended for both of these sections, having returned from a wrist injury and being unable to practise for almost a year.

Joy also won the principal piano event at Sydney Eisteddfod – Kawai Junior Piano Scholarship (11-16 Years) through three rounds of competitions. She was awarded prize money of $5,000 ($1,000 cash plus $4,000 Scholarship) sponsored by Kawai Australia. On 15 July, Joy performed a recital of 25 minutes during the final round at Chippen Street Theatre, with a program comprising the music by Bach, Haydn, Chopin and Liszt. Quoting Joy’s piano teacher Dr. Wojciech Wisniewski’s comments “This is a serious accomplishment achieved in such a competitive category with Joy being only 13 years old. It’s a worthy moment for the celebration of hard work, dedication and love for music”.

These students further consolidate our Pymble Proud motto. They work hard at their craft, accept accolades with humility, and display maturity beyond their years. Well done girls!

What clever and talented girls we have the privilege of working with.

Verity Haslam – Grade 1 Piano – A+

Musicianship information – Upon completion of the Comprehensive and Repertoire exams, an additional written exam is required to release the exam certificate. Theoretical knowledge of music is an expectation of higher practical exams and this study will assist practical music students to perform with greater musicality and an understanding of musical concepts, periods and styles. Information about the formal requirements can be found here.

It is important to note that the Musicianship/theory syllabus is quite labour intensive and, as a result, cannot be done with short notice. Lessons can be organised through the College with our qualified tutors, who will advise the length of time to teach the content. This is based on the grade your daughter is working towards.

A message from the the Pymble Parent Association

A message from the the Pymble Parent Association

Welcome back to Term 3!

We trust you had a great break and time away from the regular routine of school pickups, drop offs and working out daily lunches!

We have our Pymble Ladies’ College Garden Party this year on Saturday 16 September which is an exciting time of Term 3 for all our community. It is a season where we all, as a community, collectively combine our efforts to raise awareness and funds for our charities of choice being The Smith Family and Dignity.

It is said that one in six Australian children and young people are experiencing poverty and need our support to make the most of their education. In this current economic climate, many are facing financial difficulty and homelessness. Between us all we can make a difference by raising and donating these funds to these selected charities. By getting involved, we can teach our children in a fun and collaborative way, to become empathetic to others in need. For more information, please see below the links to The Smith Family and Dignity Websites.

For your convenience, please see the link to our PPA social and events calendar for the Semester 2.

Please note that the dates and details of these socials and events are subject to change. For more information on the year group socials please visit the newsletter sections under Junior School, Middle School, Upper School and Senior School.

Save the date: King of the Polar Bears ballet production

Save the date: King of the Polar Bears ballet production

The Co-curricular Dance RAD Ballet Stream is presenting a narrated ballet featuring ballet dancers from Kindergarten to Year 11.

The Ballet will be a premiere production of The King of the Polar Bears adapted and directed by Theatre Manager Tonya Grelis and Choreographed by Dance Program Manager Samantha Hibburt.

It is a must-see event as the music and storyline will take you on a wonderous tale about love, loss and acceptance. The wise and mighty King of the Polar Bears loses his beautiful coat to human hunters of the artic. He is saved by the gulls who shower him with feathers from which he grows a new and magnificent plumed coat. But now because he is neither bird nor bear, his sovereignty is in danger because he looks different from his fellow bears. The King must overcome doubt and savage challenges to prove his worth and to show that after all, what really matters is what’s on the inside.

The show will be performed in the Gillian Moore Centre of Performing Arts (GMCPA) on Friday 1 September at 6.00pm and Saturday 2 September at 11.00am. Tickets go on sale in Term 3 via the GMCPA Box Office.
