Work Experience Stories
Legal work experience at Norton
I have known that I wanted to be in the legal profession when I’m older, and I feel that my experience at Norton Rose Fulbright solidified that choice. During my work experience I had the privilege to sit in on a mediation session. I gave me insight into what it would be like to work in a legal firm and be a partner or barrister. I found the mediation process slower than I expected.
It was interesting to see how the different roles of the mediator, plaintiff lawyer, barrister, etc, worked together to produce a mutual outcome. I was also lucky enough to sit in on conferences with witnesses, experts, etc. These were good for me to see how lawyers interacted with people who were not familiar with the legal system and to see what their thoughts were on certain issues. During my time at the firm, I read many ‘advices’ and was asked at times to summarise expert opinions. It was also good to understand the hard work involved in the job, which is at times was tedious.
Overall, the experience was a great privilege and gave me understanding of a ‘day in a life’ of a solicitor. The team gave me much support. That week my mother judged a Mooting competition at USYD law school, and I went with her and watched the law students argue on an appeal. This was also an invaluable experience.
