Hopefully you have been enjoying the Olympic coverage as much as I have. Last night, I was very excited to watch our Head Coach – Diving, Mr Kurtis Mathews, and ex-student Dr Mackenzie Little (2014) compete in the 3m Springboard and Javelin respectively. Tonight, I’m looking forward to cheering on another ex-student (and the daughter of our Head of Sport 7-12, Mrs Katie Edwards), Kristie Edwards (2017), who is running in the 4x100m relay heats. Go, Team Pymble!

Thinking of the intense scrutiny our Olympians are under, and with our Year 12 students commencing their Trial HSC exams this week, the American gymnast Simone Biles springs to mind. Biles’ Olympic journey is a reminder that we all have the power to choose whether we respond to life’s challenges with an open mind or a closed one.

In this week’s assembly, I spoke with the girls about Biles’ decision to walk out of the Japan Olympics in 2020, despite the expectations of the world riding on her shoulders and a great deal of criticism. This conversation was in the context of remaining open to possibilities, pushing back on judgment, and helping others to do the same. Often, the easier decision to make (like continuing to compete when you know you are not up to it) is not the right one. Biles made the call to invest in her health, went on to qualify for Paris 2024, and, even though she was beaten in a floor final for the first time in her career, walked away as the most decorated gymnast of all time. She also earned the respect of the world for her humility and grace in celebrating the achievements of the gymnast who ultimately defeated her.

It’s clear where Biles sits in terms of her mindset.

Above the line – you are curious, open, in learning mode, asking ‘how can I grow from this?’.

Below the line – you are defensive, reactive, looking for validation, wanting to prove yourself right, resisting.

So, how do we move from a closed to an open mindset? In her article on The Core Questin, Mandira Kala provides a series of 15 key questions to ask yourself when making the shift from below the line to above the line thinking. My favourite question from this article is:

Are you willing to see that the opposite of your story is as true, or truer, than your story?

It’s possible I’m thinking about this now as it certainly feels like the harder decision to begin my sabbatical leave next week when many people in our community are grieving the loss of a very dear recent graduate, Helen Nguyen (Class of 2023), to illness. Most principals take a term of leave every five years; my contract, at my request, provides a month of leave every 2.5 years to allow for a more continuous renewal process. During my last period of leave, I completed a highly scheduled world tour of facilities ahead of our master plan, which has proved very helpful as we have moved into framing up our building program for the future of the College. This time, I’m in need of a rest. The Board has agreed to me taking the next four weeks to spend time in Ballina with my wonderful husband, Matt, as we work to renovate our family home. While I’m away, Ms Lamia Rockwell will be Acting Principal. Ms Rockwell is a very experienced, consummate professional who often assumes the acting head role when I am off site, and I know she will again rise to the challenge beautifully.

While the context is different, I’m sure Biles struggled with the decision to leave the competition in Tokyo. Certainly, I am struggling to leave our beautiful campus, inspirational students and passionate staff for a month; however, I take comfort knowing that we have a remarkable team and the best thing I can do for Pymble is to ensure I take this time to rest and return energised and excited for the next five years.

Finally, thank you for your messages of love and support over the past week as we have come together as a community to honour the life of Helen, whose beautiful smile, infectious energy and impressive intellect are a great loss to the world.

Windows into Learning

This week’s snapshots of teaching and learning at Pymble turn our attention to Visual Arts in the Junior School and Commerce in the Secondary School, thanks to Mrs Clutterham and Mr Lucas.

Growing art appreciation and technique

Year 6 Visual Arts students have been analysing the abstract, botanical paintings by artist Georgia O’Keefe, selecting and cropping tonal images of flowers and leaves to use as reference for their own acrylic paintings.

During our last lesson, the girls were challenged to identify three areas to help bring their work to a higher level of resolution. They collectively decided they could add finer detail (such as leaf veins), as well as lighter highlights and deeper shadows.

Students placed their work at a distance, comparing it to their photograph and pinpointing specific elements to develop, such as the “darker tones between the petals” on one student’s waratah painting. They also explained methods such as “dabbing (paint) to form semi circles for the seeds, using yellow, orange and light brown” to realise another student’s banksia form. It’s wonderful to see their patience and focus take their work to another level.

Hands-on commercial experience

Market Day is an annual opportunity for our Year 10 Commerce students to actively engage in entrepreneurial activities by selling various products to raise funds for communities in need. Students brainstormed creative ideas, crafted business plans, and executed marketing strategies to attract customers to their vibrant stalls offering handmade crafts, baked goods, and unique merchandise. Each group demonstrated teamwork and business acumen to manage their finances, track sales, and analyse their performance. This enriching educational event provided students with hands-on experience in commerce, allowed them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios, and also instilled a sense of social responsibility, as all proceeds were donated to local charities.

Little People Big Dreams

The book series Little People, Big Dreams is very popular within our Junior School library and as I recently read one to complete our Junior School Reading Challenge, I reflected on the determination and courage of our Pymble girls in the pursuit of their dreams. Last week Year 3 were lucky enough to learn alongside a marine biologist, Culum Brown, who is partnering with our school from CSIRO. Tabitha de Bilde (Year 3) reflects on what this learning opportunity meant to her.

Having a marine biologist, Culum, join our class was an amazing experience. I love animals and have always been fascinated by those that live in the ocean. Swimming is one of my favourite activities, and learning about the ocean makes it even more exciting. Meeting a real marine biologist was really COOL!

One of the best parts was hearing from an expert. We don’t get that opportunity very often, and it was inspiring. Culum’s passion for marine life and his dedication to protecting the ocean made me want to become a marine biologist even more. He really cares about the ocean and its creatures, which not many people do.

Talking to Culum made me think about the future of our oceans. I hope we can reduce the amount of rubbish in our waterways so that animals don’t get sick. It’s important to protect the ocean for future generations and for all the animals that live there.

Meeting Culum was exciting because my dream is to be a marine biologist when I grow up. His visit made me feel hopeful and more determined to follow my passion for animals and the ocean.

Many of our dancers achieved one of their dreams last weekend as they danced on the stage at the Opera House. I was lucky enough to watch each of the six Junior School groups who performed, and I was captivated by their skills, passion and sense of team; definitely a moment of significant Pymble pride. I want to give a special shout out to the group who faced technical difficulties with the playing of their music as they showed their courage in standing strong together as they waited for the organisers to fix the difficulty. Unfortunately, it couldn’t be fixed so that group will perform in our next Junior School assembly so they can showcase their performance and be given the respect they deserve.

Our Junior School girls continue to showcase their initiative and sense of responsibility through their enthusiasm in seeking to start, and lead, lunchtime clubs. We had so many applications from girls across the Junior School to run clubs and this term we have selected Anime Club led by Charlotte Liao and Dorothy Ban (Year 5) and Chess Club led by Olivia Chen and Chloe Yi (Year 6). Here’s what the opportunity to lead a club means to Charlotte:

Both Dorothy and I squealed when we heard that Anime club was chosen in assembly. We are so excited that we get to lead a club for something we love doing and that our club was chosen.  I love Anime so much and I am really excited to share this passion with other people. Last week the club was really fun and I hope more people come this week too.”

New Assembly Awards – Kindergarten to Year 2

Last term I held a focus group with some passionate Year 1 and 2 girls to re-design our K-2 Assembly awards. These awards are values based and each week in Assembly students are awarded by their class teacher for demonstrating the value of the week.

The feedback from the girls was clear, the awards needed to:

  • Include Heidi the Hedgehog
  • Be rainbow coloured and bright
  • Show it was from Pymble

This brief was then given to some creative students from Years 3 to 6 who then dedicated a number of lunchtimes to create the awards. After reviews of the drafts by the Year 1 and 2 girls, it was proving difficult to reach to a consensus on which award was the one to use. The girls decided to present the awards in K-2 Assembly and hold a vote. The below awards were the chosen awards and will be used in K-2 Assemblies to celebrate girls upholding the college values each week.

Thank you to the following girls for their ideas, creativity and passion:

Year 1 – Chloe Browne, Bella Kerle, Iyla Jolapara and Georgie Dreverman

Year 2 – Chloe Huang, Neve Sadananda, Bella Welden-Iley, Anna Won, Grace Yu, Charlotte Cross and Margaret Ko

Year 3 – Abby Su

Year 4 – Jasmine Smith and Emma Ware

Year 5 – Kate Bi, Dorothy Ban and Katie Shen

Year 6 – Keira Xu, Amy Peng and Deanne Fernando

An important notice about OSHC Registration

Commencing in Term 4, it will be a requirement that all Junior School students be registered for OSHC (through the Kidsoft Website) in order to enrol in new or additional co-curricular offerings. This includes swimming and tennis.

I strongly encourage all families to register with OSHC now, in order to access both the Term 4 activities, but also 2025 offerings when they go live on 20 November 2025.

Lunch orders

We are excited to see changes to the Junior School lunchtime menu, with the launch of a Junior School-specific Flexischool site from Term 3. This new offering includes cold drinks and frozen treats available for all students in Kindergarten to Year 6 each Friday. We are also seeking the support of family members to support sorting lunch orders and serve cold food items throughout Term 3. If you are able to assist, please sign up by clicking here.

Morning arrivals, late arrivals, absences and early departures

The safety of all students is something we must all take seriously, and I thank you for your support in this matter.

Winter Shoe and Sock Drive

We are very excited to announce that on Monday 19 August in Week 5 this term, Pymble will be running a Winter Shoe and Sock Drive, which will include all types of shoes (except for open toe shoes such as high heels and thongs/sandals). We are beyond grateful for all the Pymble families who participated in our last drive.

Pymble donated an incredible total of almost 600 pairs of shoes, which is the largest single donation the NFP charity “Shoes for Planet Earth” had ever received. Your generous donations made an enormous impact to the community. The winter footwear and socks we collect will be distributed across Australia and the globe, to homeless shelters, youth and female crisis centres, indigenous community sporting groups, orphanages, churches, and disaster-affected communities.

The importance of warm footwear during the winter months cannot be overstated. Our donations will reach those who are often forgotten or overlooked. If each Pymble family contributes one pair of shoes or socks, together we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those of in need. We ask that all donated shoes and socks are in good condition – no holes, with sturdy soles, and cleaned if necessary.

Please make sure all shoes are tied together in matching pairs. Please bring your donations to our collection points, where we will have clear signage to guide you. A reminder that this will take place on Monday 19 of August in Week 5.  And for one individual there will be a very exciting prize of a special $50 gift voucher for Archie’s Café!

Thank you so much for your continued support.

Last Friday’s Green and Gold Day was enthusiastically received with girls partaking in an assortment of Olympic activities. It was wonderful to see individuals trying new things and building skills. The afternoon also fostered opportunities for the girls to mix with students across Upper and Senior School, in turn building community.

Skateboards in Middle School

When 14-year-old Arisa Trew, won gold on Tuesday night for Australia at the Paris Olympics, Middle School embraced the celebration by inviting Year 7 and 8 students to give skateboarding a go during lunchtime on Wednesday.

As part of our Gloucester Gathering program, we are excited to be able to trial this new initiative in line with the Middle School’s celebration of Olympic sports. The girls now have the opportunity to test out and enjoy our newly acquired skateboards and associated protective gear. We have roped off an appropriate area and provide extra staff supervision for the girls to build and share their skateboarding skills.

If you would prefer your daughter not partake in this activity, please notify the Middle School Office. Depending on the interest generated, we will consider making this a regular highlight during lunchtimes.

Message from the Heads of Year 7

We would like to ask our Year 7 parents to check in with their daughters about password sharing. It has come to our attention that some students are sharing their passwords with other students. It seems the girls think sharing passwords indicates trust in relationships.

This worries us deeply as it poses significant risks such as identity theft, misuse of information and cyberbullying. Please ask your daughter to change any passwords if she has shared these, even with close friends; she may need to do this at the Hub depending on the extent of the sharing.

In our Compass Curriculum, we teach about respectful relationships and encourage the girls to demonstrate trust and support by respecting each other’s privacy. We would also like you to talk with your daughters about the content they may be sharing with others. If mental health and safety related issues arise in online chat, your daughter needs to reach out to a trusted adult and not attempt to solve any problems on their own with their peers. You are welcome to contact us to chat further about this concern.

Geography Excursion

Year 8 Geography students ventured into the Blue Mountains to collect geographic data on the impacts of tourism, the importance of interconnections and the management of landscapes. Highlights included taking the Zig Zag Railway down to the valley floor, where they explored diverse and fragile ecosystems.

At Echo Point, students sketched the iconic Three Sisters and considered the Aboriginal significance of the site, enhancing their understanding of natural landmarks. The adventure continued with a thrilling ride on the Skyway cable car, offering panoramic views across the valley. This hands-on experience allowed students to directly observe and analyse the effects of tourism, deepening their appreciation for geographical studies and the region’s environmental and social dynamics.

Alicia has shared her reflection from the day:

On Friday, Year 8 Pymble girls went on an unforgettable excursion to the Blue Mountains to explore the theme of interconnections. As we arrived, we were immediately surrounded by breathtaking views and many other tourists from all around the world. The sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling added to the excitement in the atmosphere.

We started our journey at Scenic World where we had the chance to ride on the Scenic Cableway. We could see the Jamieson Valley, Mount Solitary, and many more mountains completely covered in trees. Our group then walked through lush greenery on the boardwalk. We took breaks to take pictures and admire the exquisite flora and fauna. As we made our way to the Scenic Railway, we learned about the coal mine that was established in the 1880s and later became a tourist attraction in 1945.

The railway inclines 52°, making it the steepest train in the world! It seemed never-ending, as it just kept going up. I sat next to Ms Ventura, and we talked about how the workers from the coal mine used to go up and down there every day. After the railway finally finished, we went across the Katoomba Falls on the Scenic Skyway. The ride is 270 metres above the valley floor. We were all amazed by the height and beauty of the cascading waterfall.

Our final destination was Echo Point. As we started coming off the bus, we all gasped at the amazing view. The Three Sisters was clearly in sight, next to the valley. The vibrant colours of the landscape, with deep greens and shades of blue, created a mesmerizing backdrop as we took photos and soaked in the beauty of our surroundings.

On the bus ride back to school, we reflected on the incredible experiences and unforgettable memories created during our Blue Mountains excursion.

Congratulations to the following Middle School students who were singled out by Dr Hadwen for their heartfelt reflections on the importance of College Values:

Care: Thazin Naidoo (Year 7)

Courage: Xingyu Chen (Year 7)

Respect: Grace Jacobs (Year 7)

Below are some examples of their reflections:

“In PE there was a girl who was uncomfortable changing in the open due to her religion. I offered her the bathroom stall, even though I was there first.”

“On the first day of school I got lost. I was late for one of my classes when an older girl came up to me and said, “Are you good?” Those words meant the world to me and helped me get through the day.”

“Putting myself out of my comfort zone is really challenging but when I did try and push myself to talk to people, I didn’t know I was finally able to make some lifelong friends.”

Congratulations also to the following girls who were awarded a Silver Medallion for their commitment and achievement across a range of sports.

The Pymble Family Book Club

We are writing to announce a very exciting opportunity for Pymble families with the launch of The Pymble Family Book Club.

With this initiative, we are offering families the chance to read great stories together, share ideas, and attend events to connect with authors and fellow readers.

The first author we will be showcasing is Maryam Master. Her books Exit Through The Gift Shop and No Words have been celebrated by critics and readers alike. We are very pleased to announce she will be joining us for the first ever Pymble Family Book Club on Wednesday 28 August at 5.00pm.

We invite you to come along to spend time with your family and friends, discuss Maryam Master’s books, led by the author herself, and connect over literature. You can see Maryam talking with Pymble students earlier in the year about her books in this video.

How the Pymble Family Book Club works:

  1. Check out Maryam Master’s books and discuss with your carer/student if there is one (or both) you wish to read, and if you’d like to attend the Family Book Club together. You could even get a reading group together. Reach out to other carers and students in the year and organise to make it a social event!
  2. RSVP to attend the Family Book Club on Wednesday 28 August. Please RSVP via this form. There is no cost to attend the event.
  3. You are welcome to obtain a copy of Maryam’s book/s through a library or borrow from a friend. For those who wish to purchase the books, we have organised an easy way for you to source Maryam’s books through a supplier. Please see the order form attached or click on this link to order one or both of Maryam’s books. These will be available for collection at the College in the last week of Term 2.
  4. Both carer and student read the book/s prior to the event on Wednesday 28 August.
  5. Put the event in your calendar and come along on Wednesday 28 August to the Conde Library at the College to have a great time.

If you can’t make the event but still want to read some Maryam Master, you are still welcome to order the books through us and email us at library@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au for some ideas about what we will discuss on the night.

We look forward to you joining us for this special opportunity to connect over some incredible stories and ideas. If you have any questions, please reach out to library@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

Kind regards and happy reading!

A message from Mrs Victoria Harrison, Head of Upper School

Each year Pymble is incredibly pleased to support St Edmund’s School by hosting their swimming and athletics carnival. It is always lovely to have so many Year 10 girls volunteer to assist at these events. Being involved at these events for the girls to give back to the community encourages them to appreciate diversity and understand the challenges others face.

By working together and supporting the St Edmund’s students our girls develop important teamwork skills and empathy. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to think beyond themselves and make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Thank you to Claire Murphy and Swapna Baggma for sharing their reflection of the day:

On Tuesday 6 August we had the incredible opportunity to join a group of Year 10 students for an unforgettable day with St Edmund’s School. We hosted their athletics carnival on Main Oval and James Kelso Field, and the experience was filled with excitement and new experiences. Some of us managed the marshalling area, while others recorded times for the sprinters and a few of us ran alongside the students, sharing their enjoyment and encouraging them to have a go at the races to win house points. Those who were not running cheered from the sidelines with the Houses. Our favourite part of the morning was sitting and eating recess with the St Edmund’s students while we got to know each other better.

For the second part of the day, we helped run a range of activities including long jump, agility courses, dead chook throw, frisbee and many more. We assisted by splitting into smaller groups to help the teachers at each activity and getting the opportunity to award the students’ their achievement ribbons. These activities allowed us to bond with the kids from St Edmund’s and make new friends who we had fun spending the day with. After the sporting ventures, the Pymble and St Edmund’s students shared a delicious sausage sizzle lunch before launching into war cries with an electric show of house spirit. All too soon, the carnival ended, and it was time to say goodbye. We had a fantastic time at the event, as it was a great learning experience and opportunity for making new connections, making this day a truly memorable experience.

Student Achievements

Shout out to Sarah Tian (Year 10) who continues a fabulous year of success in swimming. At the recent School National Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast, Sarah had a wonderful week. Congratulations to Sarah on her results; 4th in 50 Backstroke, 2nd in 200 Backstroke and 3rd in 100 Backstroke. Well done! We look forward to watching Sarah continue her swimming journey.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with seven countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from five continents. This year, the competition was held at the University of Bath, UK and Amber Li was a member of the Australian team. Amber is the first student at Pymble to ever be selected to compete in this competition and was the youngest team member. Amber achieved an honourable mention, was placed 425th out of 610 and the Australian team placed 38th out of 108 countries. We congratulate Amber on her amazing achievement.

The Year 12 students had a special surprise waiting for them when they emerged from their first English paper on Monday: handmade cupcakes from Dr Hadwen. These were met with huge smiles and were a welcome snack after putting their first paper behind them.

Green and Gold Day: A Celebration of Olympic Spirit

Green and Gold Day was a resounding success, bringing the Olympic spirit to our school with gusto. The entire school community donned the vibrant colours of green and gold, transforming our campus into a sea of national pride. The excitement was palpable as students and staff participated in various activities, celebrating teamwork, perseverance and the joy of participation. The energy and enthusiasm displayed were truly infectious, reflecting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. It was a day that not only celebrated athletic prowess but also the unity and camaraderie that define our school spirit.

TASFest: Showcasing Exceptional Talent

The annual TASFest, dedicated to celebrating the creative and technical achievements of our Design and Technology students, was a showcase of exceptional talent and innovation. The projects on display were nothing short of remarkable, highlighting the ingenuity and hard work of our students across all areas of Technology and Design.

From intricate architectural models to cutting-edge technology prototypes to glamorous garments and delicious food and drink, the festival was a testament to the diverse skills and creativity nurtured within our school. Parents, staff and students alike were captivated by the ingenuity and dedication evident in each project, underscoring the importance of fostering a culture of creativity and innovation.

Year 11 Pymble-Knox Social Event

Pymble Ladies’ College has collaborated with Knox Grammar School to organise a school-supervised social event for Pymble’s Year 11 students on the 15th of October at Hijinx Hotel in Alexandria. This event offers a safe and structured environment for students to socialise and celebrate together. This event is exclusively for Year 11 students from Knox Grammar School and Pymble.

The dress code is appropriate casual clothing, or they can wear sensible fancy dress (as part of a team’s theme) that allows them to participate in activities safely. Enclosed shoes are required. Tickets are priced at $85. All information is available on the MyPymble parent portal.

The ticket price includes transport to and from the venue, activity costs, food, and drinks. Students will be picked up from their respective schools at 4.00pm and taken to the venue, where they will work in mixed teams and engage in various activities such as challenge rooms, laser tag, bowling, and VR experiences. Students will be collected at 8:00 pm and are expected to arrive back at Pymble by approximately 8:45 pm. Pymble and Knox staff will accompany the students throughout the event.

Please note: Tickets must be purchased by Monday, 12th August.

McDonald’s Incursion – Year 11 and 12 Business Studies

A representative from McDonald’s recently spoke to our Year 11 and Year 12 Business Studies students about their marketing campaigns, financial forecasts, and recruitment process. The session provided invaluable insights into real-world business operations.

The representative discussed innovative marketing strategies, detailed financial forecasting methods, and effective recruitment techniques. This firsthand knowledge will help students enhance their understanding of business concepts and apply them in their HSC responses.

The talk emphasised practical applications of theoretical knowledge, giving students a competitive edge in their studies and future careers in business.

Economics Olympiad – Year 11 and 12 Economics

A select few of our Year 11 and 12 Economics students achieved top honours in the Australian Economics Olympiad, showcasing their exceptional understanding of economic principles and analytical skills. Competing against peers nationwide, they excelled in rigorous assessments that tested their knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and economic theory.

These outstanding results reflect their dedication, hard work, and the high-quality education provided by our school. Participation in this prestigious competition not only highlights their academic prowess but also prepares them for future studies and careers in economics.

We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and their representation of our school on a national level. Distinction were awarded to: Caitlin Pridmore and Lily Huang; Honourable Mentions were awarded to; Amber Conlon, Lucy Chen and Daniela Cantafio.

From the Boarding School

The biannual chapel service with the Pymble and Gordon Uniting Church congregation is always a special occasion and last Sunday’s visit was no exception. I couldn’t have been prouder of our Boarders who lead the way with Reverend Danielle, with various readings and a stunning musical performance by Year 11 Boarder Edie. This was followed by a delicious brunch and again our Boarders stepped up helping our guests feel welcomed and at home.

The families of some of our older Boarders may recognise the faces of some of our guests, many of whose visits predate my seven years in Boarding. It is wonderful to have this tradition maintained and to see the relationships develop over the years. This plays out in many ways with just one example being a visit to Lang House by Mrs Jane Simpson (1957) who delivered ‘care’ boxes of cupcakes and slices for our Year 12 Boarders to enjoy before their Trial examinations.

Supporting Jack and Neuroblastoma research

As you know, we have been working together to contribute funds and lobby for treatment for Amy Scholfield’s little cousin Jack who is suffering from neuroblastoma. Over the weekend, Amy and her family, along with our Boarders, raised $2400 in funds at our sausage sizzle which will go directly to supporting Jack’s treatment.

Prior to this, a large number of our Boarders wrote to parliamentarians, including Bronnie Taylor, MP to lobby for access to potentially lifesaving treatment for children suffering from Neuroblastoma. Please see below an email from Amy’s dad Justen, in appreciation of the Boarders’ contribution to this endeavour:

….since your girls got involved:

  • Media coverage has included Seven, Nine and Ten National News stories, Sydney Morning Herald, Daily Telegraph and dozens of local news and social media outlets stories
  • Cancer Council Australia has donated $1.8M to Neuroblastoma research in Australia
  • There are currently about 20 Australian children with high-risk neuroblastoma, which most commonly affects babies and children under 5 years old.
  • The Australian Federal Government has fast tracked DFMO (approved US drug) to be made available to those children here currently suffering from this cancer (3 weeks ago)

Due to your donations, tenacious lobbying and public awareness campaigning, you have made history, saved children’s lives and given families hope where, two months ago, they had very little to none with 50 children a year diagnosed in Australia and 50 percent of those children diagnosed with Neuroblastoma not surviving.

Now kids like nine-year-old Zai Abdollah, two-year-old Luna Byrne, and six-year-old Holly Zerk will have a better chance at life.

For Jack’s cause, because he has relapsed, he is not a suitable candidate for the US drug but will undertake a trial drug in either Spain or Italy at a cost of $700,000 of which we are 95% raised.

You have truly lived up to the College’s strategic direction of of ‘watch us change the world‘.

Our love and appreciation to you all.

Bronnie Taylor, Shadow Minister for Regional Health, Trade and Seniors was one of the parliamentarians to whom the Boarders wrote to gain support for access to medication to treat Neuroblastoma. Bronnie was so impressed with the girls’ advocacy, she visited the College to congratulate them. It was wonderful to have this support from Bronnie and good fun to hear her stories of her time as a Pymble Boarder and her adventures since.

Love It – Mrs Beth Ayling, Acting Deputy Director of Boarding

It was another busy weekend of Love It with our girls enjoying several wonderful on-campus activities. We began the weekend around the Yarning Circle with Ms Gardiner and Ms Budd. The girls had a blast making Johnny Cakes and spending time together. Friday night also saw TASFest in the Gillian Moore Centre for Performing Arts where we got to celebrate all things TAS. Our Boarders did a wonderful job and it was great to experience their creations.

On Saturday night, we welcomed around 20 Knox Boarders from Years 7 and 8. They had a fantastic time eating pizza and answering trivia questions. Special thanks to Lyn, Deb and our Year 10 Marden Boarders for helping host the event.

On Sunday, we hosted parishioners from Gordon Uniting Church for our special Community Chapel Service. Our girls displayed what is truly means to be a Pymble Boarder. They looked picture perfect in their uniforms and displayed exemplary behaviour. The service was followed by a delicious brunch which the girls and members of our local community enjoyed chatting away in our dining room. Sunday night was a quiet one but we found time for our Year 11s to enjoy their turn of dessert and games night. Always lots of fun.

This coming weekend will see our Year 10s enjoying their dessert and games evening on Friday in Marden House. The girls love and appreciate time to get together as an entire year group. On Saturday evening, we’ll head to Strike for a few rounds of tenpin bowling and on Sunday it will be an adventure to Pancakes on the Rocks and maybe a browse at the iconic The Rocks markets.

View From My Window

Hello my name is Ella, I’m in Year 10 and I’ve been boarding since Year 8 2022. I live in Dolphin Point, a small town on the South Coast of NSW. In my family there is myself, my older brother, Oliver, who is in Year 11, my mum and dad, Michelle and Adam, and my three baby Cocker Spaniels, Spencer, Beatrice and Beau. For most of my life, my family and I lived in Queanbeyan, a small town bordering Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory, but in June of 2023 we moved to the coast. Needless to say we were all bursting to be able to wake up and have a quick walk to the beach.

Although I love being in Sydney through the school term, with the busyness and city life which provides so many opportunities, going home is definitely a highlight. The minute I am home, I feel calm and relaxed. There’s never a dull day in Dolphin Point, the water is always clear, matching the sky with the sun shining down onto the many beaches filled with locals fishing, swimming or relaxing with a friendly smile and always up for a chat.

Even though I have been saying that I live at the beach, the view from my window is actually a reserve for endangered black cockatoos. Every morning, I wake up and am lucky enough to look out and see such beautiful birds in a safe environment. My usual day on the coast involves exploring new beaches and lakes and by exploring, I mean driving the boat around while my dad fishes and I have a swim. I then socialise near the beach, chill at the rocks or work at the local bakery, Lagom, a fun and vibrant meeting point where locals or tourists come to grab a coffee and a sweet treat or their weekly loaves. Either way, I’m always happy to come back home for dinner under the night sky with the fire pit on.

Boarder of the Week

Jaidey came to Pymble in Year 7 in 2021 from the town of Lightning Ridge, near the Queensland border. Since day one, Jaidey’s composed and self-possessed nature means that she has had a calming influence on Marden House. She is much loved by those around her, who often look to her for advice and assistance in solving any problems they may encounter.

Jaidey is a beautiful big sister to her siblings, and she always puts her family first. Her natural warmth and knack with little ones have translated to many areas of her school and Boarding life. She is a wonderful OSHC educator and she enjoys spending time playing and entertaining the children of our Boarding staff.

Jaidey displays empathy and emotional maturity that extends well beyond her years. Most recently, Jaidey spent her time helping her Boarding sister, Amy, fundraise for Behind the Bear. Amy’s five-year-old cousin is currently battling Neuroblastoma and Jaidey willingly and happily gave up her time to help raise funds that will assist in his treatment. Not only this, Jaidey is always happy to lend a hand in events for our younger Boarders and does so with a smile on her face.

Jaidey’s big heart and willingness to give of herself for others make us consistently proud and we can’t wait to see what she does next.

From the Chaplains

From the Chaplains

The Apostle Paul quotes Jesus in Acts saying, “It’s more blessed to give than receive” (Acts 20:35).

Is giving greater than receiving?

Acquiring things is part of our world. As a nation we celebrate our Olympic champions, bringing home the gold. With each medal we receive the national pride is raised. And we love the security of having stuff don’t we? We’re a culture often addicted to the emotional boost of buying something new.

As a girl, my favourite book was Anne of Green Gables – maybe I loved her because she was a dreamer, maybe I loved her because she was bit of an outcast, maybe I loved her because she thrived on creating opportunities for young women to flourish.

There is this one quote that has always stuck with me, that I want to share with you:

“It’s not what the world holds for you, it’s what you bring to it.”

Yes, we each of us have a destiny to live, a unique purpose for our lives. But here we are reminded that we are not to live our lives, waiting for doors to always open and opportunities to come our way, like the world owes us something. Our Olympians have shown us this, in the years of giving themselves to their sports through icey cold early morning starts, intensive training and sacrifice.

It is in their giving, that they receive… and we receive as a nation.

Like the Apostle Paul, our Olympians remind us to bring the best of ourselves to the world. To bring our kindness to strangers, to bring honour to those leading us, care for those who need support, to be a gift to those around. For it is in the giving, that we and our world receive.

With this in mind, let us pray the Prayer of Peace with St Francis of Assisi:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

Creator, help me comfort not just to be comforted, to  understand as well as understood, to love even as I am loved. For it is in forgiving that we are forgiven, it is in giving of ourselves that we receive life.

Amen.

Work Experience Stories

Legal work experience at Norton

I have known that I wanted to be in the legal profession when I’m older, and I feel that my experience at Norton Rose Fulbright solidified that choice. During my work experience I had the privilege to sit in on a mediation session. I gave me insight into what it would be like to work in a legal firm and be a partner or barrister. I found the mediation process slower than I expected.

It was interesting to see how the different roles of the mediator, plaintiff lawyer, barrister, etc, worked together to produce a mutual outcome. I was also lucky enough to sit in on conferences with witnesses, experts, etc. These were good for me to see how lawyers interacted with people who were not familiar with the legal system and to see what their thoughts were on certain issues. During my time at the firm, I read many ‘advices’ and was asked at times to summarise expert opinions. It was also good to understand the hard work involved in the job, which is at times was tedious.

Overall, the experience was a great privilege and gave me understanding of a ‘day in a life’ of a solicitor. The team gave me much support. That week my mother judged a Mooting competition at USYD law school, and I went with her and watched the law students argue on an appeal. This was also an invaluable experience.

Athletics and Cross Country

Athletics and Cross Country

NSW All Schools Cross Country

On Wednesday 24 July, the Sydney Equestrian Centre hosted the state’s top Cross Country athletes under beautiful sunny skies and perfect running conditions. Eliza Lawton (Year 8) successfully defended her NSW title, winning the 14 years 4km race. Gemma Dixon (Year 8) also ran a great race, finishing sixth in the 13 years 3km race, while Sophia Slater (Year 11) put in a solid performance to secure fifteenth place. Unfortunately, our Cross Country captain, Georgia Phillips (Year 12), was unable to compete due to sickness.

Both Eliza and Gemma have qualified for the Australian All Schools Cross Country Championships to be held in Melbourne, however only Gemma will be competing.

Athletics Australia National Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to Eliza Lawton (Year 8), Gemma Dixon (Year 8), Charlie Slater (Year 8), Sophia Slater (Year 11), Sarah Baker (Year 11) and Georgia Phillips (Year 12) who have all been selected in the NSW team for the Athletics Australia National Cross Country Championships to be held in Tasmania in late August.

Good luck girls in your preparation for both Australian All Schools and the Athletics Australia Nationals.

Twilight Athletics – Meet 1

On Friday 26 July, our athletics girls competed in the first igsa twilight meet at Sydney Olympic Park. There was a great vibe on the eve of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Despite the chilly conditions, the girls had a fantastic time and relished the opportunity to compete after a solid block of training. There were many excellent performances, with standout results from Bethany Curruthers (Year 8) in throws, Anabella Legge-Hughes (Year 8) in sprints, Charlie Slater (Year 8) in middle distance, and Marley Titley (Year 8) in middle distance, taking a whopping 14 seconds off her 800m time from the carnival.

Twilight Athletics – Meet 2

Our second of four twilight meets took place on Friday 2 August. It was another chilly evening however this didn’t phase our girls who performed exceptionally. It was a great atmosphere with the Olympics Athletics session being displayed on the big screen whilst the girls competed. Notable mentions to our 4 x 100 m relay team of Samara Bond (Year 11), Georgia Phillips (Year 12), Matilda Harrison (Year 10), and Jocelyn Blair (Year 10) who lit up the track. Georgina Lewis (Year 7) was dominant in her track performances, leaving her opponents in awe. All three of our relay teams took inspiration from Kristie Edwards who is at the Paris Olympics competing in the Australian 4x100m team. It wasn’t that long ago that Kristie was competing for Pymble at the twilight meets!

With two meets remaining, we are excited to see how our squad progresses. The igsa 1500m will be held at this Friday’s Twilight meet and will determine selection for the igsa team to represent at NSWCIS and count towards our overall point score. We are very excited to see the below students compete:

Eliza Lawton (Year 8) – Junior

Gemma Dixon (Year 8) – Intermediate (running up an age group, GO GEMMA!)

Sarah Baker (Year 12) – Senior

Good luck girls!

igsa Hockey Competition – Round 2

Pymble 1 played NEGS at Sydney Olympic Park. They had a fantastic match, defeating the opposition 4 to 2. Emilia Bono (Year 10) opened the match up early scoring a beautiful goal on her debut for Pymble.

Pymble 2 were up against a tough Queenwood 1. Unfortunately, the girls came away with a hard fought loss but they played some great hockey and continued to battle until the very end of the match without giving up.

Pymble 3 bought some fantastic energy this week and were up for the challenge. They took advantage of playing wide throughout the match and continued to dominate with their strong press.

Pymble 4 had a very tight match against Wenona. The girls went into half time one all. Late in the second half saw Anabella Legge-Hughes (Year 8) finding some space at the back post to tap in her first ever goal for the Junior Firsts team.

Pymble 5were away this week against MLC. The girls were on fire with their defence keeping it to zero, making it very difficult to the opposition to score. A massive shout out to Matilda Clement (Year 9) who played her first game in goals and saved various shots on the day.

Pymble 6 had an entire team on debut in the igsa Hockey competition and came away with a win against PLC. It was so good to see all our Year 7s take the pitch and see their first two weeks of training in play. Late in the second half we saw Jade George (Year 7) score a beautiful goal on home turf. A massive shoutout goes to Georgia Blue (Year 7) who absolutely dominated the midfield!

igsa Captain’s Report

This week, our Captain Arabella Smithyman (Year 12) shares with us an insight on what the Pymble 1 match was like against NEGS.

On Friday 2 August, we had our second game of the season with an exciting trip to Sydney Olympic Park to face NEGS. During this game, it was evident that the team has really starting to gel, forming smooth passes and becoming more fluid and connected throughout the play.

Despite missing a few of our Year 9s and some older players, we were fortunate to welcome four talented Year 10 exchange students: Delfina De Benedetti, Emilia Bono, Victoria Rotondaro, and Juana Monteros, who proved to be valuable additions to the side.

The game was played at high intensity, with all the girls giving 100%. Our opponents managed to score two goals; the first came from a penalty stroke which our goal keeper Elizabeth Graves (Year 12) bravely faced, and the second during a strong push from NEGS in the second half after we had scored.

Our superstar exchange student Emilia, who was also named Player of the Match, scored two brilliant goals for us. The other two goals came from our leading scorer Bella Croker (Year 11), who sealed our victory with a magnificent tomahawk shot into the top right corner.

We concluded the game with an impressive 4 to 2 win, setting the tone for how we aim to perform for the rest of the season.

We are eager to get back out there on Saturday to face PLC.

See below Round 2 results:

igsa Netball Competition – Round 2

Round 2 of the igsa Netball competition showcased some excellent achievements. The weekend began on Friday night with Pymble 14’s thrilling match against NEGS 2 at Sydney Olympic Park, where they fought back from a 10-point deficit to secure a 17 all draw. The girls are rapidly improving their technical and tactical skills, demonstrating the depth of talent at Pymble.

Special mention goes to Lily Bartz (Year 8) and Devishi Malla (Year 8) for stepping up to fill in for Pymble 11, contributing to their impressive 27 to 9 victory over Roseville. The most improved team of the week was Pymble 26, who scored three goals against Ravenswood, actively applying their training on the court. Good luck to all teams this weekend!

Team of the Week – Pymble 7 (Junior Division 1)

Our Pymble 7 team were nothing short of damaging on Saturday. A very impressive display for a team who had not played together before. The girls recorded a 49 to 12 win against Loreto and a 28 to 7 win against Brigidine. Some damaging runs from Narla Bron (Year 7), Madison Aikman (Year 7), Daysie Leahy (Year 7), and Abby Pisani (Year 8) allowed our swift moving backline to work their magic. Well done to Rugby Azar (Year 7), Milly Farr (Year 7), Madeleine Gaden (Year 8), Jade George (Year 7), Eloise Lawry (Year 7), Dimity Loeve (Year 7), and Marley Titley (Year 7) who all looked like scoring each time they handled the footy.

Pymble 7 are definitely a team to watch, and I am excited to see their progression this term.

Interstate Exchange Competition

Congratulations to Pymble students Zara Cooke (Year 10) and Kiera Mironova (Year 11) who competed at the Interstate Exchange Competition from Wednesday 31 July through to Friday 2 August at Cranbrook School. This competition saw our students represent NSWCIS and play against teams from Queensland, NSWCCC, and NSWCHS. NSWCIS finished with a 14 to 10 win over the Queensland School team in the grand finale, securing the gold. Well done!

Northern Suburbs Competition

Great work to our Year 7 Northern Suburbs team who secured their second strong win of the season 11 to 0 over Stella Maris College, and also to our opens team that came away with a 19 to 1 win over the MLC School.

Special shout out to our Intermediate team that on Monday 5 August came away with a three all draw with Stella Maris College. The team had no reserves and continued to push through their fatigue to the end!

Our goal scorers: Eleanor Rowe (Year 8) with a fantastic off the hand shot, Alexandra Warren (Year 9) with a strong five metre penalty, and Gemma Dixon (Year 8) grabbing an outside top corner shot right on the last second of the fourth quarter. Fantastic! Pymble is placed second going into the semifinals next Monday 12 August.

Sydney Eisteddfod Junior

This past Sunday evening, our Junior Eisteddfod and Troupe dancers had the incredible opportunity to compete at the Sydney Eisteddfod, held at the iconic Sydney Opera House. With the harbor lights creating a stunning backdrop, we are thrilled to share the fantastic results our dancers achieved.

Not only did the girls display their exceptional talent, but they also represented our college with pride and grace. We are overjoyed to announce their sensational first place in Junior Jazz Eisteddfod and impressive second place in Junior Lyrical Eisteddfod.

Seeing our Troupe groups debut was truly special, marking an important milestone for everyone involved. Performing in such a prestigious venue was an honour, and the dancers’ excitement was evident. The girls were also thrilled to attract a spontaneous audience during their warm-ups on the forecourt, adding to the joy of the experience.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our dancers during this remarkable event.

Our junior dancers are now enthusiastically gearing up for their final competition of the Eisteddfod season; Platinum on Saturday 10 August. After this, their next performance will be at our very own Dance Showcase in November.

Join the Pymble Family Book Club

Join the Pymble Family Book Club

If you can’t make the event but still want to read some Maryam Master, you are still welcome to order the books through us and please email us at library@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au for some ideas about what we will discuss on the night.

We look forward to you joining us for this special opportunity to connect over some incredible stories and ideas. If you have any questions, please reach out to library@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au

Kind regards and happy reading!
