Work Experience : UNSW Sydney Civil & Environmental Engineering 20 to 24 May 2024
The School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CVEN) at UNSW, in conjunction with its Industry Advisory Committee will be holding a work experience program to promote engineering career options to high school students. The program will run during Week 4 of Term 2: from Monday 20th May to Friday 24th May (9.00am to 4.00pm) and will be available to Year 10 students across NSW.
The program will allow students to experience engineering projects firsthand across six areas of the civil and environmental engineering field, namely:
• Coastal and Port Infrastructure
• Structures and Design
• Construction and Project Management
• Water, Wastewater and Environment
• Road, Transport and Geotechnical Engineering
• Surveying and Geospatial Engineering
Daily field trips will be led by UNSW CVEN staff supported by engineering professionals to a range of engineering sites across Sydney, followed by an afternoon debrief and short report writing session at the UNSW Kensington. Students selected for the program will be required to meet daily at 8:45am, at Central Station, with each day of the program finishing at 4:00pm at UNSW. Students MUST be available to attend the full five-day program. (No exceptions)
UNSW CVEN is interested in receiving applications from Career Advisors on behalf of students who are self-motivated, reliable, punctual, and who have a strong mathematical ability. Importantly, students must have an interest in pursuing a career in engineering.
Please note that interested students must be confident in using public transport, and that suitable clothing (for outdoors and appropriate to weather conditions) and enclosed footwear will be a requirement. IMPORTANT – Students need to be contactable by email.

Year 10 Strengths and Skills Day
All of Year 10 will be participating in an incursion on Thursday 22 March hosted by the Futures Department.
Students will be asked to complete a Clifton Strengths Assessment prior to this date. Consent for the The Futures Levy for each student needs to be provided prior to receipt of their personalised Cliftons Strength code to access the survey.
emPOWER Lunch – Journalism
On Friday 1st March at lunchtime in the Library Learning Studio, our Learning Prefects will be hosting ex student Olivia Kinghorst (Chang, 2011) in our first Empower Lunch for 2024.
What is emPOWER Lunch?
An initiative which started in 2022 and led by the Learning Prefect team, Empower Lunches are open to students in Year 7 to 12 to meet with Alumni, guests and industry experts to learn about them and their career paths.
Our special guest, Olivia is a respected international journalist who has volunteered her time to come meet students to share her insights on working in the field of media and journalism and her career path to date.
Students who are interested need to register their place at the event for catering purposes.

Masterclass
Following the emPOWER Lunch on Friday 1 March, during MBS, Year 11 and 12 students are invited to join Olivia Kinghorst in a masterclass on effective communication based on her experience as a presenter, moderator and journalist.
