“Strive to be first: first to nod, first to smile, first to compliment, and first to forgive.” – Anonymous

We do love our firsts at Pymble. We were the first school in the Southern Hemisphere to launch Data Science as a subject, the first to host a Rugby 7s competition for girls and now we are the first school to sign sports legend Lauren Jackson to launch a basketball academy for students in Years 3-12. Our theory is, if our girls can dream it, we will pull out all stops so they can do it at Pymble.

On Sunday night, Matt and I had the absolute joy of joining Rachel Maenpaa, Head Coach – Basketball, along with Adam Raw, Director of Sport, several staff members and an exuberant team of Pymble Pulse student supporters at the LJ Tribute Game at Qudos Bank Arena. It was such a great night of girl power and fantastic to see our Pymble students stand out in their sports uniform, roaring from the sidelines. You may have seen our announcement about the academy, which was picked up by Channel 7.

Just as important are the firsts our girls achieve for themselves. A parent of a student currently on our Year 9 Residential Program out at Vision Valley was thrilled to receive a letter home from her daughter proudly announcing she was the first to have a go on the high ropes – something that previous made her feel more than a little wobbly. I’m also thinking of all the girls who audition to take part in something for the very first time, whether that’s a cast or crew role in our upcoming The Addams Family Musical (get your tickets here), a debating team, or any other academic or curricular pursuit. Trying something new takes courage and is to be celebrated, whatever the outcome.

As it turns out, this morning I was re-listening to a great podcast of Brené Brown interviewing Dan Pink about his book The Power of Regret. So much of this interview centred around regretting not being courageous; regretting the things that we don’t do, rather than the things we do.

So…here’s to a year of firsts for our girls – whether that’s taking a first step towards a personal goal, being the first person to speak up for someone who cannot find their voice, or being the first to nod, smile, compliment and forgive when it truly matters.

And now it is my pleasure to handover this column for the first time this year to our wonderful Head Prefects, Julie Sheng and Bella Walker, who will share their theme for 2024. For our new families who may not know, each year our Prefect team selects a theme to set the tone of their leadership. It’s a message your daughters will hear consistently from the student leadership team throughout the coming year.

It’s short, it’s sweet, and it’s got spirit: 2024 – Hear us roar!

“Having been inspired by the famous lion on our school logo, Katy Perry’s infamous song and many powerful women who aren’t afraid to share their opinion, our Prefect theme for this year intends to empower and uplift Pymble girls as individuals and as a community. We believe everybody has a roar that deserves to be heard. Although it can sometimes be a jungle out there, Pymble students can rest safe knowing that their roar, whenever and however they choose to share it, will be recognised and valued.

“2024 will be a year of pride. Just as lions flock together in their prides and support one another, our Pymble family will similarly encourage and empower one another, bonded through our shared love for the College.

“2024 will be a year of action. Students will be encouraged to take the chance, step up, and put themselves forward for both formal and informal leadership roles.

“2024 will be a year of trust. Trusting the friends, teachers and mentors here to guide us on our journey.

“And of course, 2024 will be a loud year – a year of cheering each other on, laughing, and roaring.

“We’re looking forward to hearing Pymble students as they travel out and about in the jungle.

“With much love from your safari guides, Julie and Bella.”

Launch of Student Instagram

In assembly next week, our Year 12 leaders will be launching another first – a private Instagram account for Pymble students. This is a Prefect-led initiative that many students have been requesting for quite some time to enable them to promote and celebrate school events and achievements amongst their Pymble peers using a channel they enjoy. All care has been taken to establish supervising staff and rules of engagement to ensure the account remains a private, safe and friendly place for current Pymble students aged 13+ only. It is by no means mandatory, but an additional channel we are allowing the student body to trial to help them build school spirit and share more roars in 2024.

Please enjoy this week’s Windows into Learning, celebrating some of our amazing teachers across all year groups and subjects at the College and the wonderful work they do with your daughters.

Year 2 Performing Arts

Year 2 students recently embarked on a musical journey inspired by the sounds of a rainstorm. First, they explored the various elements that constitute a rainstorm: the slippery plop of raindrops, the rumble of thunder and the gentle rustle of the wind. Armed with this newfound knowledge, they set out to translate these natural phenomena into musical notes and rhythms using a variety of instruments, ranging from whirlies, to glockenspiels, to drums. Some mimicked the soft pitter patter of rain using delicate keystrokes, while other recreated the thunderous roar with booming drumbeats and a crashing of cymbals. The culmination of their efforts was a captivating performance, where every note and rhythm echoed the wonders of the natural world. With beaming smiles and a sense of accomplishment, the students showcased their creativity and ingenuity, proving that inspiration can be found even in the most unexpected of places.”

Secondary School Languages

“Fancy a game of Piranha-grammar or Sentence Stealer? Games are a great way for students to be physically and cognitively active and to connect with their peers while consolidating their learning. They enable teachers and students to develop a sense of community based on trust and respect. For language learners in particular, games are an opportunity to practise new vocabulary or grammar and to improve their communication skills and fluency in a safe and joyful environment. Below are a few highlights of learning in Secondary Language classes this week.

Courage and Community

I was immensely proud of all our girls in Years 3 to 6 last Friday as they swam and dived with Pymble pride and house spirit in their 2024 swimming carnival and diving showcase. Some girls won races, some achieved new personal bests, some showed courage in having a go and others showed their determination as they powered on despite lost goggles or tiredness. All girls cheered their friends and House, and it was a wonderful day of shared celebration.

I was particularly proud when the professional photographer, Anthony Khoury, whom the College partners with, commented that whilst he works with many other schools around Sydney, he has never seen or heard the level of House spirit and community that he saw throughout our carnival on Friday. #PymbleProud!

A huge shout out to Mr Tyson who planned and led the carnival with Miss Baker, Mrs Kingsell and the Swim staff.

Cook2Care – A student-led initiative for Year 3 and 4

One of our phenomenal students, Jasmine Smith (Year 4), has started an initiative to support the homeless by encouraging our community to cook meals to support members of our local community in need. Jasmine spoke to our 3-6 Assembly on Monday, and she is hoping Year 3 to 4 girls and their families will support her plan to change the world by cooking one meal or bringing in packaged food to make parcels for those who are supported by organisations such as The Dish in Hornsby.  Please bring in food or packages to Hedgehog House.

Bikes and Scooters at School

It has been wonderful to see so many students enjoying the growing number of bikes and scooters we have in the playground at lunch. For many, this experience has been the first chance to ride a bike, and it has been lovely to see students encouraging each other as they build this new skill.

Students in Years 2-6 are welcome to bring their bikes and scooters to school to use at lunchtime under the supervision of staff. All bikes must be in good working order and students are required to wear a properly fitted helmet.

Ride Safely to School Day

Friday 22 March is National Ride Safely to School Day. This wonderful initiative is the largest celebration of active travel and one of the best ways to start the school day. We invite students to participate in various ways:

  • Ride a bike or scooter to school with a parent or family member
  • Meet Mrs Brown and other members of the Junior School at Pymble Station to ride (bike or scooter) to school as a group. Please complete this form to register.
  • Bring your bike or scooter along to participate in a range of activities at lunchtime.

All students participating in National Ride Safely to School Day must have a properly fitted helmet when riding.

100 adventures to complete in Junior School

Last week in our Junior School Assemblies we reminded the girls of the 100 Adventures to complete before you finish Junior School Challenge. These amazing adventures include a variety of exciting experiences designed to engage curiosity, cultivate connections, build resilience, foster creativity and develop the girls’ understanding of themselves- all while having fun! Some of these include knitting scarves or blankets for the homeless, bush walking, creating your own boardgame and helping someone younger.

We were lucky to have Amelia Hardas from Year 7 attend as our Junior School 100 Adventures Ambassador. Amelia is one of 3 students to have ever completed all 100 Adventures in this booklet by the end of her time in the Junior School. Amelia re-ignited the girls’ excitement for these adventures, sharing her favourites including the beach clean up and creating a daisy chain. Amelia is going to be returning to our Assemblies periodically to check in with the girls about the adventures they have had.

All girls (who did not already have a booklet at home) have been provided with one this week. It would be wonderful if you spoke with your daughter about these adventures and which ones she would like to do this year. Mrs Brown and I would love to hear of the adventures the girls have, so please send through any pictures over the year!

Parent Wellbeing Series

This year we will be holding a number of workshops with a focus on wellbeing. The first of these is on Thursday 7 March at 8.30am in the Junior School Library. The session is aimed at parents of students from Kindergarten to Year 3 but all are welcome. Places are limited.

If you would like to attend, please click here to register.

Junior School Music Ensemble Weekend

On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February, more than 150 students from the Junior School participated in the annual Music Ensemble Weekend. Aimed at “kick-starting” the ensembles for 2024, the two days of music-making were a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in a series of intensive workshops and rehearsals. By the end of the weekend, all groups had shown enormous development in their ensemble skills, technique, and musicianship through a varied range of repertoire.

On Saturday evening, students from the Grainger Band and Stanhope Band were treated to games and a swim in the pool. With the giant inflatable obstacle course, students had a wonderful evening of fun and friendship.

Special thanks must go to the music staff and parent helpers for all their support, talents and time to make this an enriching learning experience for your daughter.

From the Middle School

Thank you to all of our Middle School families who joined us for the Knowing People, Knowing Pymble event on Tuesday evening. It was wonderful to see so many of you in attendance. We hope that you found the evening informative and that you were able to introduce yourself to your daughter’s Compass teacher and mingle with other parents from your daughter’s house and beyond.

For those who were unable to attend the Year 7 event, we have a recording of the presentation that we will be able to share with you shortly. The Year 8 PowerPoint slides are also available. Special events in our Middle School Calendar always call for special performances and so, we would like to thank our Pymble String Quartet for playing, and Esha Marwah (Year 7) who expertly performed songs on the Veena. Thank you Esha for sharing your extraordinary talent with us and our Year 7 families. We cannot wait to hear you play again.

We would also like to thank our Year 8 Middle School Leaders who supported the staff on the night. Thank you, Estelle Lee, Harriet Gregory, Aurora Zhang, Isabel Chook, Annie Chen, Emma Scott, Emma Sim, Akshara Bhattacharya and Summer Shen.

We are grateful for parent support with this initiative.

Building on good habits for Middle School, students are continuing to use their diary effectively to navigate school demands and grow their independence. Please ask your daughter to share her diary with you so that you are aware of her workload.

From the Middle School Parent Groups

Year 7

It was lovely catching up with people on Tuesday night at our Middle School Information Evening. If you were unable to attend, please look out for the slides in the MyPymble portal and in the newsletter.

We are really looking forward to one of biggest and best events of the year next Friday 1March! This is a fabulous event for new and existing parents and an exciting way to kick off the new school year!

Held on Gloucester Lawn under the stars, the Icebreaker is a Pymble tradition of 50 years. It is a cocktail function with dinner and drinks, and hosts all school years from Kindergarten to Year 12. This year’s theme is “Florals” if you would like to dress in theme (although not essential). However, if you would like, you could add a touch of floral (perhaps a flower, floral accessory etc).

We will be there to greet you and are looking forward to making our year group the biggest (and most fun!) at the Icebreaker! Please join us at the Year 7 balloon so we can all see each other. There will be cocktails, canapes and music and it really is a great night out. Please note that the College does offer babysitting through after school care until a certain time if you require this.

Please click here to book tickets as soon as possible (closing Friday 23 February).

In terms of upcoming events, we would love to organise a dinner and drinks night to welcome all mums and dads to Pymble this year. We find evening events suit most parents as many are working and it is a bit more relaxing. In past years we have had dinners at The Greengate Hotel where you can pay at the bar and it is cost-effective, so we will consider this option and others around the north shore area (we can discuss in our WhatsApp group).

In the past, we have organised separate mums and dads nights to avoid requiring a babysitter. It is also nice to build up friendships with other fellow mums and dads separately and they do tend to have more fun this way! We can also run a poll in the group to see what everyone prefers.

We also have the option of a coffee morning if people are keen.

We have very excited at the opportunity of a Mums and Daughters Day at Vision Valley in June. This is currently being confirmed and we will advise as soon as possible.

Social Media in Year 7

We run several social media groups in Year 7.

These groups are independent of the school and are restricted access groups. Being a member of these groups provides opportunities to ask questions and to connect with other parents. Please note that joining these groups is entirely optional.

We have a Year 7 Community group on WhatsApp to hopefully provide all the connections and answers that you need:

  • Year 7 Parent Community – This group is only used communicate important messages, announcements and reminders. Only the administrators can post messages in this group. The WhatsApp group link is here
  • Year 7 Pymble 2029 – Questions – This general chat used by parents to ask questions. The WhatsApp group link is here

A message from Mrs Victoria Harrison, Acting Head of Upper School

It is hard to believe that we are already near the end of Week 4. It has been a busy start in the Upper school, and we are happy to report that the girls are settling into the groove of learning and activities. I hope that your daughters are approaching the year ahead with enthusiasm and an open mind to take on new challenges and opportunities in the Upper School. Over the next few weeks, we will be launching a Service opportunity with the Days for Girls program and encouraging the girls to make the most of the lunchtime movement opportunities and the campus walks that are almost ready to launch. We are confident that getting involved are positive ways that the girls enhance their health, build new connections, and develop their perspective.

We have recently been notified that several of our Year 10 girls have been awarded their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. This is a wonderful achievement, and we are impressed with the commitment, initiative, and maturity these girls have shown in working towards this award. Congratulations to Jocelyn Ying, Anais McDonald, Yuyin Luo, Cindi Yu and Zara Tang. The girls will receive their badge and certificate at a special Upper School assembly later this term.

We hope to see many more Upper school students take on the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh Award program. More information about the program can be found here.

The Upper school team enjoyed getting to know our new students at special morning teas last week. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn a little more about the girls and check in on their first few weeks. One of our new Year 9 students, Hakone Liceralde, has shared this reflection of her first few weeks at Pymble.

In the words of T.S Eliot, ‘Every moment is a fresh beginning.’ I am Hakone Liceralde, a new Year 9 student at Pymble. Initially, I was nervous about moving to a new school. The unfamiliar faces, the incredible yet overwhelming layout of the campus and the challenge of establishing myself within a new environment. However, as soon as I was welcomed on my first day by energetic senior leaders, contagious joy and pom-poms, my original apprehension was washed away.

I have felt a beautiful sense of belonging that radiates from the supportive students and staff. I am especially grateful for the guidance I have received from my Head of Year, Compass teacher and student buddy. They have helped to make my transition to Pymble, as easy as possible, a testament to the welcoming culture of the school.

As new friendships begin to blossom, I hope to strengthen these bonds. I look forward to immersing myself in multiple, exciting opportunities throughout the year, such as Concert Band, debating, public speaking, library duties and academic enrichment activities. I feel very privileged to be a new member of the Pymble community and I know that the years ahead will be full of challenges, learning experiences, and moments of achievement.

I am excited to commence my journey as a Pymble girl, to grow in my independence, to be extended beyond my comfort zone, and empowered to explore the endless possibilities.

As we come towards the half-way mark of the term, it is a good opportunity to reflect on how the year has started and plan for managing the upcoming weeks. The students are to be commended for their focus and commitment this year. Many of them of committed to continuing their co-curricular pursuits and others have signed up for new activities. This is in addition to maintaining their academic goals, as we approach assessment tasks later in the term.

Building Resilience

Resilience is a key term often used but how to build this is not often discussed. Please find some helpful tips from renowned psychologist Andrew Fuller by clicking here.

Many Year 11 students have nominated to participate in our Pymble-Knox Connections group, which has the first event next week. We also had strong interest from students who are considering applying for positions in our annual Sony Camp in December. It is encouraging to see so many girls exploring how they can become more involved in their community.

From the Boarding School

It was a thrilling week poolside at Pymble last week. It was good to see our Boarders fully immersed in the events and demonstrating their prowess in the pool. Aside from many personal triumphs it was the collective power of the Boarders that made my heart sing. After a very long six years, I am delighted to report that our Year 7 to 9 and Years 10 to 12 relay teams both won the day girls verse Boarders relays! I could not be prouder of our swimmers who won the race, let me say, fairly and squarely. I am sure the fantastic cheering by our Boarders helped them win and it has been wonderful to see our Boarders embracing the theme of Pymble pulse with their own high volume war cry.

Walgett Calling

Every year one of our Boarding staff members represents Pymble at the Isolated Children’s and Parents’ Association (ICPA) Annual State Conference. This wonderful organisation is dedicated to ensuring all geographically isolated children’s educational needs and aspirations are not disadvantaged because of where they live. This year I am lucky enough to be attending the conference in Dubbo. It is always good to learn more about the challenges for our country families and to think about ways we can contribute to their endeavours.

Following on from the conference, I will be travelling on to Walgett to meet with some of our northern families. There will be a gathering at the “Sporto” on Friday night from 6.00pm and if you are in the area, I would love you to join us. Please just send me an email and let me know. Similarly, if you would like to catch up somewhere else in the region, please let me know. I am sure we can make it work.

We do have a number of visits planned for the year. Please see below our planned visits for 2024 and remember, we are always open to suggestions.

Icebreaker Reminder

Our annual Pymble Parent Association Icebreaker is a great opportunity for our Boarding families to get to know the wider Pymble community. For those of you who have not attended previously, the evening is organised so you can cluster in daughter’s year group or find friends amongst the gathering.

This year, Edwina Beveridge, president of the Boarder Parent Group, has organised a room at Pymble Pub following Icebreaker. The pub is just a short walk up the hill and it will be a fabulous chance to spend time with our Boarder families. It would be lovely to see as many of you there as possible. Click here to purchase tickets if you haven’t already.

Loving Love It – Mrs White

The Love It program is now in full swing, and it is great to see so many boarders engaging in the program. Last weekend, we took our Year 7s to Balmoral to enjoy a picnic dinner and share some time together on Friday evening. Our plans for Saturday night didn’t quite go to plan due to a little technology hiccup. However, blessed are the flexible, and thanks to some quick-thinking staff, we were able to shift our outdoor showing of the Taylor Swift concert into the Marden Common room. The Boarders delighted in the music and spent time making bracelets. Sunday was an action-packed day, with 20 Boarders heading to the Central Coast Aqua Park with Deb and Caroline. You will see from the photos that this event was very well received by the boarders, and they are looking forward to returning soon.

This weekend will start with a Boarders Get Baking excursion to Maggio’s in Cammeray with Mrs Burgess and Mrs Wiedermann. On Saturday evening, we will be heading to the Thornleigh Golf Centre for either some putt-putt golf or some time on the driving range, channelling our inner Tiger Woods. Fingers crossed for sunny weather on Sunday as we head to Palm Beach to check out Barrenjoey Headland, the Palm Beach Markets, and even visit the newly opened Boathouse – now called the Joey – for a milkshake.

A View From My Window

Hi everyone, my name is Rain and I’m from Hong Kong. I live in the New Territories of Hong Kong which is a bit more country-like compared to the city of Hong Kong. Living on the countryside of Hong Kong gives me a break from all the skyscrapers, buildings, and shining lights I see every day when I go out. So, it’s a nice feeling when I look out my window and the view is only of the mountains and the sky.

My favourite thing to do when I’m at home is to go up to the top floor and sit there during the sunset and let myself relax under it. But obviously, the best part of living in Hong Kong is getting to go to Disneyland all the time and getting to have the most delicious foods ever!

I have a family of four, my mum, dad, and my older brother, Hughes. Hughes is 23, and he studies overseas as well, in Austria. We don’t always go home at the same time, so my favourite time of the year is when we are both back home together with our parents.

The person I miss the most is probably my doggy, Marshmallow. She’s a three-year-old Samoyed who loves giving out kisses and loves treats. She enjoys spending time in my room with the air conditioner on full blast. Every time I go home, she’s well-prepared and looks out from the window, waiting for my return.

I always get mixed feelings when coming back to Pymble. I really miss my family and home, but at the same time, I seem to have a wonderful time with my amazing friends here. Getting to be at Pymble is such an incredible experience, and by having lovely people around me makes it feel like a home away from home.

Boarder of the Week

Year 12 Boarder Giaan (Gee) is an incredibly supportive person – always willing to lend a hand. She shows a genuine commitment to the well-being and success of other Boarders and her willingness to say “yes” and help whenever needed makes her a wonderful part of our Boarding family.

Over the recent two days of the swimming carnival, Gee really made an impact by motivating everyone around her – she was so enthusiastic! She even had the younger Boarders engaged in helping create a fun environment making the days memorable for everyone. And Gee never has a problem with being able to laugh at herself, she does not take herself too seriously.

At the swimming carnival she dressed for the occasion in an interesting mix of pink Boarders’ colours adding a pink bra over a T-shirt which definitely channelled Margot Robbie and Barbie. She had no hesitation in jumping into the pool to swim herself being an example for any Boarder who might be hesitant or nervous about swimming. Over the carnival she encouraged others and boosted their confidence.

She has an impressive ‘can-do’ attitude to everything she approaches.

A beloved colleague sent me a recipe for ‘Marry Me Chicken’ on Valentine’s Day. Evidently this dish has gone viral on TikTok, purporting to cause unwitting suitors to propose marriage by the last bite. It got me thinking about the lengths we go to when we are in love. Is Beyonce right, are we “Crazy in love?”

A team of Doctors at Harvard researched the chemical effect of love in human brains. The 2005 study analysed MRI images of the 2,500 brains of individuals in the throes of romantic love. Participants brain chemistry lit up and became flooded with dopamine (the so-called feel-good neurotransmitter) when shown photos of those with whom they were romantically engaged.

Intriguingly, Dr Schwartz, found that “When we are engaged in romantic love, the neural machinery responsible for making critical assessments of other people, including assessments of those with whom we are romantically involved, shuts down. That’s the neural basis for the ancient wisdom ‘love is blind’.”

This year Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday both fell on 14 February seeing celebrations of romantic love coincide with that of divine love. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten calendar, revered in the Christian Calendar as a time of reflection, prayer and fasting in the lead up to Easter (Orthodox Christian traditions celebrating a little later from March 18).

Traditionally, Ash Wednesday is a day of prayer and fasting, where worshippers commit to fasting from anything from specific foods to technology or “negativity.” The dictum “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” is recalled that we might consider our need for repentance and humility before the greatness of God. Ashes are prepared by burning palm leaves from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebrations and used to mark the sign of a cross on worshipper’s foreheads.

In the first letter of John we read “ Thisislove: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

As God looks upon us, he in fact is not blinded by love. He sees us for who we truly are, in all our human imperfection. And yet, loves us. God’s love gives us the ability to be honest about the lovely and unlovely within us.  Love floods more than God’s brain chemistry, it floods his entire Being, to the point at which he will lay down his life in the pursuit of that love. For as we read in John’s Gospel, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” In “giving up” something during the time of Lent, we recall the “giving up” of God’s own life, inlove, for us.

So, as we enter this Lenten season, may each of us know love, in the beauty (and sometimes imperfection) of its forms. That we might know love, even in the dust.

Riverview Gold Cup Regatta

On Saturday 17 February, the Pymble Senior Squad raced The Riverview Gold Cup Regatta, one of the oldest rowing events in Australia.  This race is competed over 1400 metres on the Lane Cove River.

The Senior 1st Eight’s heat featured schoolgirl crews alongside under 21 and under 23 Club and University crews. Our Pymble rowers raced a competitive heat winning the ‘Silver Oars’ for the schoolgirl eight event and qualifying for a place in the final of the Women’s Open Eight race.  This team were the only schoolgirl crew to secure a place in this final.

It was an exciting final 400 metres in the Women’s Open Eight race when the Senior 1st Eight edged their bow in front of the Sydney University under 21 boat to finish fourth – wonderful to watch and what an achievement for our Pymble rowers! Congratulations to Carolina Yemma (Year 12), Holly Craig (Year 12), Erin Porter (Year 11), Megan Wood (Year 12), Scarlet Olesen (Year 10), Millie Cullinane (Year 10), Mika Naito (Year 11) and Mia Booth (Year 12).

The Senior 2nd Eight took an early lead into the race’s unique ‘dogleg’ turn with Loreto Kirribilli having the advantage on the inside. The Pymble Senior 2nd Eight had one final push to the line, and were victorious, winning the coveted ‘Silver Oars’. Congratulations to Tilly Goddard (Year 11), Annabel Shanahan (Year 11), Skye Pockley (Year 12), Isabella Stalley (Year 11), Catherine Walker (Year 12), Celeste McDermott (Year 11), Lauren Gibson (Year 11), Isabel Matosantos (Year 12), Alice Anand (Year 11) and coach, Mr Booker.

The Senior 1st and 2nd Quads raced well in the schoolgirl Quad race, encountering a fast Ascham Quad comprising their top five rowers. Our Pymble Quads secured second and third place finishes in the event and continue to build their race speed each week. We are keenly anticipating their next race at the ‘Head of the River’ on Sunday 3 March.

Roseville College Regatta

On Saturday 17 February our Intermediate, Junior and Learn to Row squads raced in the Roseville Regatta at Iron Cove.  These squads are to be commended for the extra effort of additional training around their racing.

The Junior 1st Quad won their race. Congratulations to Mie Naito (Year 9), Zara Kinniburgh (Year 9), Allegra Taubenschlag (Year 9), Harriet Murphy (Year 9) and Kelly Clifton (Year 9).

The Junior 2nd Quad unfortunately experienced equipment issues preventing them from crossing the line. Our Pymble rowers were not to be stopped, entering late in the Year 10 3rd Quad Division, racing 1500 metres for the first time and taking the win convincingly. Congratulations to Emily Bartrop (Year 9), Annie Pennington (Year 9), Amber Eisenhauer (Year 9), Leander McLaughlin (Year 9) and Ellie Pointon (Year 9) for handling adversity, showing true Pymble grit, drive and spirit.

The Year 9 3rd Quad also secured a win by leveraging their strong mid-race rhythm. Congratulations to Angelina Attinger (Year 9), Mia Sherry (Year 9), Lucy Simpson (Year 9), Georgina Curtis (Year 9) and Genevieve Bazina (Year 9).

The Junior 4th and 5th Quads secured podium finishes, placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The newly formed Junior double of Isla Campbell (Year 9) and Ainhoa Culazzo (Year 9) finished 2nd in their first ever race as a double – a fantastic achievement!

The Learn-to-Row squad placed 3rd, 2nd, 4th and 3rd respectively, in their Quads. The Intermediate Four and Quad finished 5th and 4th, learning much from the weekend to build momentum for the lead into Head of the River on Sunday 3 March.

Softball – Round 2

Four Pymble teams competed in round 2 of the Invitational Independent Schools Softball Competition on Saturday February 17 in hot and humid conditions.

Pymble Senior Firsts faced tough opposition from a dominant Brigidine College team.  Despite the final score line showing a loss 7 to 0, Pymble have closed the gap compared to previous years. Our Senior Seconds needed one more run to tie the game but unfortunately, with one out remaining, fell short of a win. A commendable effort from our Senior Thirds saw the team narrowly lose to a Senior First opposition team, while our Junior Firsts faced the toughest team in the competition.

On Saturday 24 February, our Senior Firsts play against top of ladder, Barker College. Our Senior Seconds play Abbotsleigh’s Senior Firsts, whilst our Senior Thirds will compete against Abbotsleigh’s Senior Seconds. Finally, our Junior Firsts will be away from home again as they face Tara.

Senior First Captain’s Report – Annabel Davidson (Year 12)

On Saturday 17 February, Pymble Senior Firsts competed against the challenging Brigidine Firsts Softball team. Despite the loss of 7 to 0, as well as the hot temperatures on the oval, Pymble’s defence was commendable, successfully limiting potential home runs and keeping the opponent’s score as low as possible. The team worked together to safeguard the bases, with our pitcher Zoe Bloom (Year 9), delivering exceptional pitches, and providing a tough challenge for the Brigidine opponents. Shoutout to Amelia Brandon (Year 10) for her enthusiastic coverage of the outfield, contributing to the overall defensive efforts of the team. Congratulations to all players on a great team effort!  The team is looking forward to continually improving throughout trainings and upcoming games.

Concerto Competition

What a fabulous evening of amazing talent we witnessed on Thursday Feb 15. After 10 performances from 10 very fine young musicians, I felt my cup was overflowing with joy. Adjudicating these women was an unenviable task, and we were very grateful to have Allie Osborne (Associate Concert Master of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra) and Kimbali Harding (CEO of Australian Youth Orchestra) do this for us.

Aine Oo, clarinettist in Year 11 took out the coveted award and will perform with the College Symphony Orchestra in term 2 at the Secondary School Ensemble Concert.

Congratulations to Catherine Li (Year 9)

Catherine recently competed in the International Piano Competition and was place in the top 6 of the (Kharkiv meets Zurich). She was then invited to play with a Ukranian Orchestra. From here, Catherine tells me “I assume that I got 4th because the Adjudicators read my name first in the series of finals diplomas which usually is 4th place.”

Student Instagram account launch

Student Instagram account launch

In Week 5, our Student Communications Prefect and SRC Prefects will be launching a private Instagram account set up solely for the purpose of showcasing and celebrating student events and achievements at Pymble.

All current Pymble students aged 13 and older are welcome to follow the account if they would like to. Please note there is no implied pressure for your daughter to follow the account. The existing channels of communication remain in place to ensure all students have access to key College information.

Only designated Prefects will have the ability to post content, which will fall under one of three categories:

  • promoting/supporting upcoming student-led events
  • call-outs for volunteers or spectators at these events, or
  • post-event celebration and acknowledgement of students involved.

All posts and comments will be monitored by staff members who have volunteered to support the Instagram team and monitor conduct from Pymble followers.

The account we are creating will be private and unshareable, and it will reflect the Prefect theme for this year: Hear us Roar – 2024.

The only permissible functions are posts from the Prefects and comments/reactions from followers.

Before being accepted as a follower, each student will be verified as currently enrolled at Pymble and asked to read and acknowledge the strict terms and conditions of engagement which align with our College values and Student Technology Code.

Any inappropriate use or breaches of these terms and conditions, College values and Technology Code will be followed up with the appropriate Head of Year.

This launch is exciting for many of our students who have been campaigning to use Instagram as a communications tool among the student body for some time now.

Please be assured our staff have worked closely with students to put rigorous measures, checks and guidelines in place and will remain actively involved in monitoring the account to ensure it does what it is intended to do: provide a safe, inclusive and positive channel to help build engagement, pride and school spirit.

Meet Pymble’s bus drivers

Meet Pymble’s bus drivers

Every week we will feature a profile on one of our wonderful Pymble bus drivers. This week, we learn more about Peter on Bus 5 and what makes him tick!

Please tell us your name and a little bit about yourself.

My name is Peter and I’ve been driving buses for almost seven years now. In my spare time I like to go out and find interesting landscapes to explore and take photos of, and fly and take video using my drone. I’m also a football (soccer) fan and would one day love to go to the UK to watch Liverpool play a game at Anfield.

If any, what careers did you have before becoming a bus driver?

Prior to bus driving I worked in a variety of different industries which included installing video conferencing equipment, my own garden maintenance business, working at Woolworths head office as a shelf merchandiser as well as starting as a casual at a Woolworths store before working my way up to being a department manager at the same store.

Which Pymble bus do you drive and how long have you been a Pymble driver?

I do the Lower Northern Beaches run from Dee Why to the College, and have been doing it since the last two weeks of Term 3 2023.

You spend a great deal of your time on the road and have no doubt seen it all. What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to Sydney drivers?

My pet peeve is the lack of patience some drivers show around buses, particularly when you see them trying to speed past and cut in front because they don’t want to be behind.

What is your favourite part of working at Pymble?

My favourite part of working at Pymble is the group of drivers we have and that the students and staff are all very friendly.

Where is the best excursion/charter location you have driven to for Pymble? If new to Pymble, what other locations have you enjoyed driving to?

My favourite location to drive to has been Vision Valley.

What was your favourite subject at school?

My favourite subject at school was biology.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

My favourite holiday destination is a toss up between Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Tasmania, both for their incredible amount of different landscapes found in a small area.
