Solar Buddy

Solar Buddy is a charity that helps give solar powered light kits to kids who need them, so they and their families can have light to work and study after dark. In Year 5 we worked after school and on weekends to raise money. We held bake sales and did extra jobs. We had to raise over three thousand dollars, and we did it! The money we raised was sent to a school account, and then we placed our order and waited for the lights to arrive.

When the Solar Buddy lights finally arrived we were all so excited! We watched a video on how to put them together and then got straight to building. It was tricky at first but once we figured it out it was actually really fun and easy. After we finished our solar light we each wrote a letter to send with it. Everyone who got a Solar Buddy light would also get a letter about us, our families and what life is like here in Australia.

Once our grade finished all the steps, we packed all the Solar Buddy lights into a special box, ready to be sent to kids all over the world. The Solar Buddy charity was such an amazing experience and I know everyone in Year 5 loved it.
