We are proud to announce that our ISDA Debating team won this year’s grand final. Additionally, our students secured second place in the duologue section at the Parramatta Eisteddfod and also took second place at the Sydney Eisteddfod. We also placed second at the Junior Chamber Strings Eisteddfod, an outstanding achievement. One of our talented Year 6 artists, Mia Li, was a finalist in the Young Archies, with another artwork displayed in Vivid. You can read more about her work in this newsletter. These achievements highlight the high standards across many facets of learning at our School.

Groove at the Factory Theatre

On Wednesday evening our Junior School band musicians preformed with our Senior School girls at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville. Titled Groove, this annual event has been a wonderful opportunity for our students to perform in a public venue. Congratulations to our Music Department and all performers. Yo can read more about this in this article.

Junior School Athletics Carnival

We had the perfect weather and the best day for our Kindergarten to Year 5 Athletics Carnival. It was a delight to see the parents dressed up, (some with cheer posters) getting into the spirit of the day. Mooramoora won the House Cheer. We will announce the overall winning team with the age champions at assembly next week.

Year 5 Sun Safety Workshop

Year 5 Sun Safety Workshop

Year 5 students have been learning about sun safety this term. They discussed UV radiation, skin damage, proper sunscreen application, Australians’ risk of skin cancer, and protection strategies. This week, students attended a sun safety workshop featuring Channel 7 reporter Kirstie Fitzpatrick, dermatologist Dr. Phillip Tong, representatives from SC Johnson sunscreen, MakMar shade designers, and senior students from Kambala with UV cameras. They learned about sun damage and even saw projections of their appearance at age 77.

‘On Thursday 19th Year 5 had a fun and educational day filled with so many vital facts that year five will use for the rest of our lives! There were many ways that year five not only got to learn about the sun but also about the different types of skin! At one point in the sun safe workshop, we got to analyse our skin and see how we could protect it even more. We got to try varied materials that could make sun sails and shade which will help us in our STEM/PDHPE project. We took part in quiz at the end to see how much we took away from the workshop. I now know that keeping our skin safe and healthy from the sun is vital for our future!’
Mila Coote (Year 5)

‘People in Australia don’t realise how much damage the sun does to us. We have a hole in the ozone layer, which increases our risk of getting sunburn, and in turn, melanoma and other types of skin cancer. I learned all of this Thursday this week, when Year 5 had a sun safety workshop. We learnt about how much damage the sun really does to us, what our skin looks like under a UV light, and much more. And we went hands-on and got our own sample of sunscreen.  I learned lots of things, and I am now very aware about sun safety, skin cancer and the importance of sunscreen.’

Author Tristan Bancks Visits MLC School

Author Tristan Bancks Visits MLC School

MLC School had the privilege of hosting Tristan Bancks, author of Two Wolves, The Fall, and Cop and Robber, among others. Year 6 students, who have been enjoying his stories as part of our modelled reading program, were thrilled to hear him speak about his books and his journey as a writer.

Maya Haysom-McDowell (6F) had this to say:

‘I speak on behalf of all Year 6 when I say that having Tristan Bancks visit was very exciting. We got to hear about how he wrote of all his books. He confessed that it actually took him quite a long time to finish them, up to ten years. He helped us to understand that he needed the right setting to create his works, using playlists of music to help capture the mood of the scene. He also explained that he got his ideas from holidays, such as the wooden cabin in his book, Two Wolves. He composes book trailers for every novel he makes. Overall, this experience was interesting and educational.’

Round Square Show-and-Tell: ‘How My School Cares for the Planet’

Round Square Show-and-Tell: ‘How My School Cares for the Planet’

Recently, the Environment Captains met for a Round Square Show-and-Tell around ‘How My School Cares for the Planet,’ meeting with schools from India, UAE, and around New South Wales. During this meeting, we shared the ways that our school is environmentally friendly. We also gained some new ideas for the ways that our school can care for our planet, such as native animal shelters and beehives with native bees.

We are also excited to share a new program, called Waste-Free Wednesday, where every Wednesday, we bring food with no wrapping to reduce our waste. Starting next week, every fortnight, there will be a challenge to make our school more environmentally friendly. At the end of this term, there will be a Kahoot! about the environmentally friendly features of our school.

Girls involved:

  • Layla Montgomery (Year 5)
  • Caitlyn Law (Year 5)
  • May Zaichkowsky (Year 5)

Year 2 Excursion – “Stories from the Reef” at the Sydney Opera House

Year 2 Excursion – “Stories from the Reef” at the Sydney Opera House

On Thursday 12 June Year 2 embarked on an exciting journey into the city for an unforgettable excursion to the iconic Sydney Opera House. The day was filled with excitement, discovery, and learning, as students experienced the magic of live performance and explored one of Australia’s most famous landmarks.

The highlight of the excursion was attending Stories from the Reef, a vibrant and engaging workshop celebrating the beauty and diversity of life of the Sydney Opera House Artificial Reef Project. Through movement, puppetry, and storytelling, the workshop brought to life the underwater world of the harbour in a way that was both educational and entertaining. Students were captivated by the colourful sea creatures, the environmental themes, and the important messages about caring for our environment.

Students also took part in a guided tour of the Opera House. They were fascinated to learn about the history, architecture, and behind-the-scenes workings of this world-renowned performing arts centre. From walking through the concert hall foyers to peeking into the theatres and rehearsal spaces, the tour provided a unique insight into what goes on beyond the stage.

The excursion linked with current learning in Dance and Drama and CLP, reinforcing themes of storytelling, systems and sustainability, and Under the Sea. It was also a wonderful opportunity for students to practice being responsible, respectful members of the school community while out and about in the city.

The girls all had such a fantastic day, and we’re sure it’s a day the students will remember for years to come!

Year 7

Year 7

Well done to Year 7 this week, finalising assessments for the term, working hard and giving their all. It was so nice to see Year 7 running activities for their Year 11 Big Sisters on Thursday. I saw Kahoot’s with baby photos, scavenger hunts, hot seat and celebrity head games being run by the amazing Year 7s, fostering their vertical connections at MLC School.

Week 9 (starting Monday 23 June) in Term 2 is traditionally a very fun and exciting week. It is Round Square Week so stay tuned for all the activities that will be on including; Prescott Puppy Pageant, Illuminate and the Colour Run!

Year 7 Camp Reflections

And finally, please enjoy these wonderful reflections from some Year 7 students about their camp experiences.

‘Camp was fun but also really scary in some parts. I was really proud of doing rock climbing and abseiling because I didn’t think I could do it and it was my first time. I was really nervous, especially for abseiling, but my friends cheered me on and I just did it. I enjoyed sleeping in tents and being with friends outside of school. One hard thing was sleeping away from home, but I got used to it after the first night. I’ll remember how it felt to finally get down the wall and how proud I was of myself. Camp showed me I can do more than I thought.’
Olivia Wang (Year 7)

‘The Year 7 camp was great and amazing 🙂 This camp was an opportunity for us to grow as people. The highlight of the camp for us was the abseiling activity, which we both enjoyed immensely (we went down the highest course together three times 🙂 ). Tenting was a challenge for us as it wasn’t something we were used to doing, however with the comfort of our friends and teachers, we made it through. The memorable experiences of camp and the many friendships we made are aspects that we will cherish in our hearts forever.’
Jasmine Luo (Year 7) and Ava Xu (Year 7)

‘Camp in the Blue Mountains was such an adventure! We did rock climbing and abseiling, which was scary but so fun. It was absolutely freezing the whole time, but we still had a great experience. Our group leader, Nick, was super supportive and made everything more enjoyable. The views were beautiful, and even though we were cold, we all worked together and had the best time challenging ourselves and making memories.’
April Cookson (Year 7)

‘During the camp, I had a great time sleeping in my cabin, which felt cozy and relaxing after a day full of activities. One of the highlights was when I challenged myself with abseiling — it was scary at first, but I felt proud after doing it. We also spent some nights sleeping in tents, which was a fun and different experience. On the tent day, we made our own dinner, and it turned out really good. We also made yummy damper, which was a fun activity and tasted delicious. The food throughout the camp was great, and I especially enjoyed the lunch and dinner they provided each day. We had really good camp leaders who were friendly, supportive, and made the whole experience even better. One day, we went on a 6km hike surrounded by beautiful vibes and stunning scenery, which made the long walk totally worth it. I also got to bring my digi camera, so I captured lots of fun memories and amazing views. Overall, it was an exciting and memorable adventure.’
Aria Fanos (Year 7)

‘During the 4 days and 3 nights at camp in the Blue Mountains, I was proud of hiking the 7km, and for being brave enough to abseil for the first time, even though I was nervous at first. I really enjoyed sharing cabins and tents with my friends, and doing fun activities like the tent activities (that included cooking burritos, learning to set up a tent, and a night walk), as well as team challenges and games on the last day. I’ll always remember the beautiful views from the hikes and how proud I felt after stepping out of my comfort zone. This camp experience taught me to endure challenges, and I’ll take that lesson with me for life.’
Susie Wang (Year 7)

‘My camp week was an amazing experience. We had lots of fun, we reconnected with each other, we created new bonds with people we wouldn’t have imagined. On the first day once we got to the cabin site we were playing games and exploring the area. Then we made damper we had to collect sticks to make fire and then we got settled in our cabins. Then the next day we did rock climbing and abseiling it was quite the experience some people were scared and others were excited. The next day we did hiking, we did a long, long hike for the whole day, that night we slept in tents. On the day we were supposed to leave we spent the day playing games it was the best year 7 camp experience! My personal favourite experience was abseiling even though I was scared. I was proud of overcoming my fear of heights. I faced quite a lot of challenges especially being homesick, I missed my parents a lot, and I overcame it by trying to forget about it and by having fun.’
Elva Wu (Year 7)

‘During this Year 7 Camp, something that I really enjoyed doing during camp was going abseiling. I found that it was very engaging to do, and it’s also a challenge to finish it which makes it even more fun. Even though I didn’t make it to the highest abseil, I still found the activity enlightening and I’m still proud of myself for making it to the intermediate abseil. I also enjoyed the hike along the Blue Mountains area as the views were amazing, and you really feel like you’ve accomplished something when you make it to the top. This really made me reflect on the value of when you work hard towards something, the result is always worthy of the effort, like how the view were worth the treacherous climb. Overall, I really enjoyed this whole camping experience in the Blue Mountains. Though there were a few challenges to get through (e.g. Sleeping in the tents in cold weather) we could easily solve those issues by wearing more layers, the whole experience was wholesome in general and I learnt a lot from this camp.’
Charlotte Hui (Year 7)

‘Year 7 camp was an unforgettable experience that taught me so much about myself and my classmates. I’m really proud of pushing myself to try abseiling , even though I was scared at first—it felt amazing to face my fear and do it anyway! I really enjoyed spending time with my friends and playing fun team games. One of the biggest challenges was being away from home for the first time, but I got through it by talking with my parents and reminding myself how lucky I was to be there. I’ll always remember the laughs we shared, the confidence I gained, and the way we all supported each other—those are lessons I’ll take with me for life.’
Elly Chen (Year 7)

‘Having our camp at the Blue Mountains was one of the unforgettable journeys of my life. From abseiling down steep cliffs to rock climbing up towering cliffs, every single moment pushed me just a little bit further out of my comfort zone. I was also exceptionally proud of myself for getting to the top of the green rock wall, even though I doubted myself, I pushed all my worries away and focused on each step I was taking. One of my key moments of the camp trip was making damper over the camp fire. Some were burnt some were undercooked, but in the end no matter how yours was cooked they were all delicious. Sleeping in tents was definitely the most challenging, especially with the freezing temperatures overnight. I had to put on a bunch of layers and I still woke up freezing. I also loved how all of us pushed through the 7km hike and shared a bunch of stories that we may not have. Camp teaches us how to bond, and makes us do things you might not have done, it’s crazy how at camp you see people differently and they become a completely different person. It had taught me that even though the conditions were tough, there’s always a way to make memories that last.’
Fedra Nikolakopoulos (Year 7)

‘As we arrived at Katoomba, my face was hit by a cool gush of wind, brushing against my skin. Over the 4 days of freezing cold weather, I experienced various challenges and obstacles, that I both enjoyed and overcame. My favourite activity was rock climbing up the huge cliffs of the Blue Mountains, and abseiling back down. After convincing myself to complete the highest wall, that reached up to 50m, I reluctantly abseiled down. When I reached the ground, I felt accomplished, and relieved that I had completed it. Later that night we did a bush walk through the track, walking by the breathtaking views of the 3 sisters, and spotting various flora and fauna. Year 7 camp was an amazing experience, where we built strong friendships and skills like courage and collaboration, and was a memory that will stick with me for the rest of my life.’
Felicity Kouch (Year 7)

‘Alice and I are both very proud of putting ourselves out there and trying all the things camp had to offer. We enjoyed being outdoors and seeing possums at 5am. We were challenged when we had to do abseiling and rock climbing. We were scared at first but when we started doing it, it was actually so much fun. Alice and I overcame our fear by persevering and doing it anyway. We will always remember Ms Stolzi’s wake up call, when she ran into everyone’s cabins and played music really loudly (it was hilarious).’
Anelise Storino (Year 7) and Alice Baker (Year 7)

‘Camp was an amazing experience overall. There were definitely some highs and lows, but the groups got through it. My group (group) 4, were camping on the last night, and it got down to 0°C at night! All of our fingers were freezing! Another challenge I faced was probably the hike. We walked about 6km, up and down stairs, and in really cold weather – I remember having about 5 layers on. In my opinion, the best part of camp was what we did on the 2nd day – hiking and abseiling!! There were multiple walls to do when abseiling; beginner, intermediate, and advanced which had three different ropes, each one with different rock faces and challenges. My favourite wall was the one on the right, were there was an overhang. You had to lower your body until your legs were above your head, then you pushed off and reached for the wall with your feet (but I couldn’t quite reach, so I just sat and moved down). The most challenging thing I did was rock climbing when I tried a wall called Pepper Corner. I had to shuffle up against one wall, put my hands in a small gap, and move my legs up, bit by bit. My friends cheered me on from the ground, and belayed me too. I also had such a great time orienteering, and making damper!! All in all, the things I will definitely take away from camp are; damper tastes better with jam, abseiling is super fun, – especially with friends – there can be multiple leaders in a team, when you communicate and cheer others on (or are cheered on), things get easier. I believe the most important thing I will take with me is that challenges are worth doing, like climbing a mountain, or hiking up MANY stairs, because the view at the end is one of a kind. Camp made me grateful to be able to go to places like the blue mountains, where nature has created something so beautiful.’

This week during Luminary time, Year 9 explored how to be upstanders online. Drawing on resources from the eSafety Commissioner, students reflected on practical ways to support others safely and respectfully online, such as checking in with someone, reporting harmful content, or reaching out for support. I encourage you to continue these conversations at home with your daughter.

Wade House Exodus Service Day

On Friday 13 June, students from Wade House travelled to Ashfield to volunteer at the Exodus Foundation Loaves and Fishes Free Restaurant, supported by Ashleigh Leck and Head of Senior School Joanna Graffen. Year 11

Year 11

This week, Year 11 students participated in a Luminary time activity designed to encourage them to check in with each other and discuss how they are coping with the term. As the stress of Year 11 and Year 12 increases, it is crucial that students support one another and regularly ensure that everyone is managing well.

As previously mentioned, we are currently in the midst of the leadership application process. Additionally, some Year 11 students have applied to participate in the MLC School Sony Camp. Both of these opportunities are excellent, but unfortunately, not all students will be selected. During our year meeting, I addressed the cohort on how to manage disappointment. The key points from the session emphasised that experiencing disappointment is a part of life, and how students handle it and move forward is an equally valuable learning opportunity. It is important to avoid negative talk about the successful candidates and instead focus on learning and growing from the experience by seeking feedback from a trusted staff member. Students are encouraged to continue applying for positions, as each application and interview provides valuable practice that builds mental toughness and resilience.

This week, Year 11 students had the opportunity to spend time with their ‘little sisters’ in Year 7. They listened to stories about the adventures and experiences that the Year 7 students had during their recent camp. It is wonderful to see the friendships developing between the Year 11 and Year 7 groups. The excitement and enthusiasm of the Year 7 students when they get to spend time together is truly heartwarming. The photos this week are from the session with Year 11 and Year 7.

On the last day of term, the MLC School Colour Run will be happening, you can read more about it in this newsletter and register. The following will be in place for any student requiring adjustments to support their participation in the Colour Run.

  • A sheltered tent will be available for students needing a quiet, alternate space to take a break. This will be staffed by the Learning Enhancement Department.
  • A staff member from the Learning Enhancement Department will be actively visible throughout the event to support monitoring of students.
  • Students will also have access to the First Aid Tent if needed
  • Students have the option to “opt-out” of running in the colour. If this is the case, students are encouraged to inform their Head of Year and identify an alternate form of participation in the event if at all possible.

Year 12

The Extended Essays (EE) for IB and the HSC English Orals have now been completed. The girls are to be congratulated on their efforts with the EE, a key component of the IB Diploma and a milestone of Year 12. The girls have worked with their supervisors for a year to develop individual research projects on specific areas of interest. It has been great to see Year 12 support each other through the HSC oral task, hearing their presentations and offering suggestions during study periods.

Careers presentations continue this week with our alumni series, which has been organised for Year 12 by Jo Cilia, our Head of Careers and Pathways. The focus was on our Old Girls working in Business, Commerce and Law – details are below:

The program continues in Week 9 and next term. Please ask your daughter about the presentations and we hope they find them inspiring and interesting.

Principal Lisa Moloney and Head of Senior School Joanna Graffen spoke on Tuesday to Year 12 about Study Camp and the various offerings available during the July break. Subject specific workshops are being planned by Heads of Faculty and teachers – more information is available from your daughter’s subject teacher. More details are to come in a separate flyer to help support families in their planning for Study Camp during the first week. Practice exams will be available for students to complete in Potts Hall under exam conditions and the library will be open for private study. Students are not expected to wear school uniform but must sign in and out with the Studies Office. The canteen will not be open so students will have to make their own arrangements for lunch and recess.

The captains have been busy planning events such as Iluminate, Round Square Week, the environment initiative and a special MLC School event, the Prescott Puppy Pageant. All of the captains attended the Prefect Afternoon Tea on Wednesday afternoon and Marirose Giann has coordinated her team to host this important event at MLC School.

If you have any questions about your daughter’s academic progress, please contact the relevant subject teacher. For pastoral and wellbeing concerns, your daughter’s luminary and I are available to discuss any issues you may have.

Are you applying for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) through UAC?

The Educational Access Scheme (EAS) is designed to help students who have experienced significant educational disadvantage. If eligible, you may be considered for course offers even if your ATAR (or equivalent) is below the standard selection rank.

If you think this applies to you, please refer to the EAS Application Guide. You apply through your UAC online application, and this short video explains how.

Most EAS applications require:

  • A Personal Statement – completed by you
  • An Educational Impact Statement (EIS) – to be provided by MLC School
  • A Medical Impact Statement – completed by a health professional. Allow them plenty of time ie. at least a month
  • Additional supporting documentation

You are responsible for uploading the Personal Statement, Medical Impact Statement, and any additional documentation to your UAC application (where relevant).

UAC EAS applications close on Tuesday 18 November 2025.

How the Educational Impact Statement (EIS) works:

The EIS is completed by someone at MLC School who knows your situation and can write a supporting statement using the official UAC template.

To organise your EIS:

  1. Email a copy of EAS application (and any relevant documents) to Jo Cilia.
  2. Indicate who at MLC School you believe is the most appropriate person to complete the EIS.
  3. This must be submitted by Friday 19 September 2025 (last day of Term 3) to allow time to get this done for you.

Ms Cilia will coordinate the EIS and it will be uploaded directly by the school to a secure UAC

portal and attached to your application. It is not returned to students to upload.

You will receive an email in early Term 4 confirming once your EIS has been uploaded.

Please note: All EAS applications are treated with the utmost confidentiality.

Sports Success

In recent weeks it has been very exciting to witness the success of many of our MLC School sports teams and individual competitors:

          • MLC School football won the NSWCIS Plate semi-final and have progressed to the Grand Final.
          • Olivia Kalamvokis (Year 8) won the NSWCIS Cross Country U14 Championship and progresses to the NSW All Schools Cross Country, and,
          • Our Gymnasts had amazing success in Tamworth.

As you are aware we are currently reviewing our sports strategy and working hard to build team unity, school spirit and participation. We are already starting to see the benefits of this refreshed approach. Thank you to acting Directors of Sport Sarah Jauncey and Scott Carpenter and all the Sports staff for their efforts. I would also like to thank all the parents and carers who are supporting their children to attend training and for driving to venues all over Sydney (and beyond) to ensure that we field full teams in all games.

This weekend is also a big weekend for sport, with the final IGSA rounds being played. Grand Final matches include:

An update on the Uniform Review

I have now met with Students, Old Girls, Staff and parent representatives to discuss how the current MLC School uniform could be updated and renewed. There are several similar suggestions across the groups, and not surprisingly, some differences of opinion between the ideas shared by adults and students.  Common themes include school swimwear that provides more options for different body types; a senior skirt that is more comfortable, cannot be rolled up and suits a variety of students; considering whether the pinafore could be modified so that the belt does not fall off and is more comfortable; the option of tailored shorts and/or a skort; and a suggestion that there should be more ‘give’ in the blue pinstripe fabric. Differing opinions on whether the straw hat should be compulsory, the shape of the Junior dress and whether comfort and warmth should be our primary consideration were expressed.

Parents also provided feedback regarding concerns about the quality of some uniform pieces, the cost relative to quality and the enforcement of uniform standards. While some parents gave examples of garments from other schools that they thought worth considering (for example, a more streamlined pinafore), others like the unique nature of our current style.

Thank you also to those who have provided feedback via the MLC School Communications email address, your input has been noted. The consultation period ends at term’s end. Further feedback is welcome.

We will now take some time to review and prioritise the feedback and to meet with uniform suppliers to assess our requirements against their ability to meet our needs. We are mindful that any significant changes need to be carefully planned and communicated so that there is a transition period and that sustainability and cost to parents is considered.

Year 6 Debaters win ISDA Championship

Year 6 Debaters win ISDA Championship

Our ten Year 6 debaters began the ISDA competition back in early February with little to no experience doing competition debating.  They were formed into two teams of five with their own coaches to train them and guide them through the competition. Now four months later, after many excellent wins through seven out rounds and a long finals series, both teams won through to the Grand Finals held last Friday evening.

The ISDA competition is probably the most difficult school debating comp in Australia, so it is a great achievement to be the last two teams in each division from the 32 teams who began. The Primary A team (Peta Bianchi-Howden, Rayna Zhu, Audrey Henderson, Caoimhe McAtamney, Mikayla Brown) were on the Affirmative against the team from Knox Grammar. The motion was, ‘That we should not use AI at Primary and High schools’, it was a very closely argued debate in front of a panel of three adjudicators.  After a long discussion our team lost in a split 2-1 decision, the team’s first loss in a run of 12 debates. The team was understandably disappointed but it’s a great accomplishment to reach the GF and they have many more future years to represent MLC School in debating. Thank you to their coach Angus who put in a huge effort to teach and support the students over many weeks of the competition.

The Primary B team (Alicia Wang, Elana Chrun, Arielle McBrien, Audrey Barnes, Mariella Tsolis) were assigned the Negative side on the same topic against the team from Trinity Grammar. It was a tense audience with parents having children going to both schools and not sure who to be hoping would win!  But our team was cool and composed in presenting a solid case for the benefits of learning to use AI responsibly from an early age.  They won in a unanimous judge’s decision and are the 2025 champions of the division.  Special mention to their coach, Old Girl Sarah Pearson (2022) who put in a great effort to nurture the students’ debating skills over many weeks.

Overall, we had a very successful season in the ISDA competition with seven teams making the finals series and four teams in the Quarter finals. Thank you to all forty students for their commitment to training and debating over two terms. To all the parents and carers who came to watch debates and collect students late on Friday nights from schools all over Sydney, thank you for all your support and help in making our MLC School debating program such a success.

Groove @ The Factory

Groove @ The Factory

The Jazz and Contemporary concert ‘Groove’ took place at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville on Tuesday 17 June. It was a fantastic celebration of music, showcasing a diverse range of contemporary repertoire from our jazz ensembles and solo artists. A big thank you to the students, parents, and music team for making this incredible evening such a success. We are saddened that this is likely the last performance for most of our wonderful Year 12 musicians before they head into exams, but what a great way to celebrate their achievements. Many thanks to Principal, Lisa Moloney, Head of Senior School Joanna Graffen, Head of Junior School Daniel Sandral, and our wonderful music tutors for coming along and showing their support for our students. Extra thanks to Liz Gilberthorpe (Assistant Director of Music), Conor O’Reilly and Dr Rob Woodward for their ensemble direction, and to Toby Duncan for his expert piano stylings.

Success of the P&F Annual Dinner

Success of the P&F Annual Dinner

On Saturday 14 June, our school community came together in a wonderful gathering of friendship, delicious food, and shared purpose at the P&F Annual Dinner. Held at a new venue, Onyx Restaurant, Crowne Plaza Burwood the event was a resounding success, bringing together parents and friends from Pre-Kindergarten through to Year 12. Laughter, chatter and heartfelt conversations filled the room, reminding us of the strength and spirit of our school community.

High Potential Learning Leaders Announcement

High Potential Learning Leaders Announcement

It is my pleasure to announce that MLC School has appointed two exceptional High Potential Learning Leaders. We were fortunate to once again be overwhelmed with very highly qualified and experienced applicants for this key role. As we have hundreds of high potential learners across Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12, it was determined that the best course of action was to appoint two people to lead this work and I am delighted to announce that Amy Kirk (our much loved and respected Year 2 Coordinator) and James Adams have been successful.

Amy Kirk is currently our outstanding Year 2 Coordinator in the Junior School and an active member of the AI Taskforce. Prior to teaching at MLC School, Amy was Gifted Education Team Leader and Classroom Teacher at Newington College Wyvern House, and Classroom Teacher at Meriden School. Amy is highly qualified to lead in this space, having completed a Master of Education (Gifted Education), and a Bachelor of Education (Primary) from USyd. She is currently working towards her Master of Educational Leadership. In 2021, Amy presented at the World Gifted Education Conference and she has been actively involved in leading professional learning at MLC School. Amy will continue in her current role as Year 2 Coordinator until the end of 2025 before taking up the position alongside James next year. She will be instrumental in shaping the new High Potential programs with Stephanie Dimitrelis and James in 2025.

James Adams brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role, and he comes to us from Cranbrook School, where he is High Potential Coordinator and Head of Oratory and Debating. James has an HSIE background, specialising in IB/HSC Economics, Business Studies and Commerce. Like Amy, James has a strong academic background, with a Master of Science in Learning and Teaching from the University of Oxford, and his dissertation was a narrative case study investigation of the impact of a schoolwide Gifted and Talented programme on twice-exceptional students. He also holds a Master of Economics from the University of New England,  a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from Harvard University Graduate School of Education He is currently studying a Master of Education in Education Leadership from Harvard University. James has also been a Casual Lecturer and Tutor at the University of Sydney, where he taught undergraduate and postgraduate units in gifted and inclusive education . Additionally, James has conducted educational research as a Research Associate at the Centre for Independent Studies. He is looking forward to the challenge of working with our high potential girls.

With a commitment to fostering high potential learning and a proven track record of success, Amy and James are well-suited to these vital positions at MLC School.

Inspiring Futures: More Opportunities for Girls in STEM

Inspiring Futures: More Opportunities for Girls in STEM

Our School has a proud and enduring legacy of empowering girls to excel in Science and Mathematics. For decades, our students have defied stereotypes, embraced intellectual challenges, and paved the way for a new generation of women in STEM. You can read about some of our esteemed alumni scientists and mathematicians here. Which MLC School Old Girl will your daughter follow in the footsteps of?

In 2025, we are building on our legacy with renewed purpose and an expanded range of opportunities designed to inspire, challenge, and support girls to see themselves as the scientists, engineers, and innovators of the future.

Globally, women remain underrepresented in STEM fields. According to UNESCO, only 35% of STEM students in higher education are women. Even when women do contribute to scientific progress, their work is often overlooked—a phenomenon known as the Matilda Effect, where their achievements are historically attributed to male colleagues or supervisors. Chiara Biscarini, co-chair of the UNESCO Chair on “Water Resources Management and Culture,” puts it simply: “Young women need to know that they belong in STEM as much as men.”

That belief is at the heart of what we do. We are deeply committed to giving our girls every opportunity to flourish in Science and Maths, and we are proud to already offer a vibrant suite of co-curricular STEM programs. Our STEM Academy (Year 1 to Year 10) nurtures curiosity and inquiry from the earliest years of schooling. Students in Year 5 to Year 6 can take part in Junior Robotics competitions, while our Senior Robotics teams develop advanced design and coding skills and regularly compete in challenges. These rich learning experiences have helped shape a strong culture of STEM engagement across the school. You can read more about our Junior School STEM curricular and co-curricular offerings in the next newsletter.

In 2025, we are taking the next step: building that passion directly into the Senior School curriculum.

For the first time, Engineering Studies will be offered as a Stage 5 elective in 2026. This is a dynamic, hands-on course that introduces students to real-world engineering principles across civil, mechanical, environmental, and biomedical fields. Girls will engage in design-thinking, critical problem-solving, and collaborative projects that mirror the work of engineers in industry and academia. It’s a course that not only builds skills but also builds identity, a powerful chance for students to see themselves as future engineers.

In another exciting first, we have launched an Accelerated Mathematics pathway, with our inaugural cohort of Year 10 students now completing Year 11 Advanced Mathematics. This acceleration provides gifted and highly motivated students with the opportunity to deepen their mathematical thinking and access the HSC curriculum earlier. We are currently testing Year 9 students to assess their suitability for entry into this pathway next year.

These developments are more than just timetable additions, they are statements of belief in our students’ capacity and potential. At every turn, we are striving to dismantle the invisible barriers that still limit girls’ participation in STEM and replace them with opportunity, encouragement, and a culture of possibility.

Families will hear more about these exciting pathways during our Year 8 Subject Selection Webinar on Tuesday July 23 2025, where our passionate staff will share insights into how these courses will be delivered and the support structures in place to ensure every girl can thrive.

Our future scientists, mathematicians, and engineers are already among us. We can’t wait to see what they will create, discover, and change in the world. Don’t forget to read a little about some of our Old Girls who are excelling in science, mathematics and technology.

This week featured the Junior School Athletics Carnival and Senior School athletics trials. Kindergarten to Year 5 students participated in track, field events, and novelties, showcasing excellent performances. A memorable moment was when a Kindergarten student said she felt like she had ‘lava on her feet’ after her 50m race. The race of the day was the house mascot race that was taken out by Churunga!

Netball Umpire Appreciation – Ella Baker (Year 12)

As Ella Baker concludes her final MLC School netball season as a Year 12 student, we would like to take a moment to recognise and celebrate her incredible contribution to our netball community. Ella’s dedication over the years has been nothing short of inspiring. She has been an integral part of our netball program, not only as a passionate and skilled player but also as a devoted umpire. This year in particular, Ella has gone above and beyond, umpiring for our younger teams at Brush Farm. Always showing up with a smile and a positive attitude, Ella has become a true role model. Her willingness to support and guide our new and younger players has helped foster their love for the game, and her patience and leadership have made a lasting impact. Thank you, Ella, for your commitment, your sportsmanship, and for everything you have given to our netball program at MLC. We wish you all the best in the next chapter, knowing that you’ve left behind a legacy of passion, kindness, and excellence.

Since the opening game, we showed clear and consistent improvement—developing greater confidence and stronger communication. In this game, we were able to work cohesively and run structured set plays, reflecting the effort put into training and the commitment of every player. A huge thank you to our coach, Michael, as well for his ongoing support, encouragement, and guidance this season (and for buying us donuts for our win!).’
Lana McLean (Year 12)

Football

MLC02 Football: ‘I love being on this team, I love the memories I’m making, our coach Steve (Big Red) has coached me since year 5 and he makes the experience so much better. We are really starting to play well together as a team and everyone is really supportive of each other. It’s a great team to be a part of! Big Red gives us great encouragement at training and during games and even when we lost last weekend against Monte, he was sure to tell us that we were the only team to score a goal off them. My favourite game was the one at Abbotsleigh where we tied 1-1, the team spirit was really high and everyone had a great time.’
Francesca Masters (Year 8)

Hockey

MLC01: ‘This past weekend the MLC01 hockey team played extremely well, showcasing the skills we have worked hard to develop all term. This match was our semi-finals game, in which we played the toughest team in the division, SCHOLS. Everyone worked well, keeping calm and holding against some talented players on the opposition. The game was tough, with a loss that was expected but still disappointing. Despite this, we had many great attempts at goal, with the ball possession remaining equal for most of the game. This weekend we will play our final game for third place in the division.’
Evelyn Kerr (Year 11)

MLC02: ‘The game was scheduled at 08:00 Am which was two hours earlier than usual and it was positively freezing. Although we had played this Santa Sabina team before and absolutely crushed them, they had still managed to make it to the semifinals like us, so we knew somehow, they got good in that timespan and to not underestimate them. For the first half they started with the ball only to be tackled immediately which left them slightly baffled therefore giving us the opportunity to get our first two goals in and leaving them with only one which narrowly snuck past our iron defence. The second half was a little more tough as we had it on their half the most but couldn’t keep it in the D long enough for us to take a shot and they stepped up their defence game a lot , even with these new adjustments a third goal was achieved and the game ended on multiple short corners that were unsuccessful but it didn’t matter because MLC had won!’
Margot Bell (Year 8)

MLC03: ‘Despite a tough 6–1 loss on Saturday, the team showed great spirit and determination throughout the game! Our communication on the field was improved. And we had some great runs up the field. Everyone gave it their all, and even though the score didn’t reflect it, we played really well as a team and kept fighting until the end. And we’re looking forward to coming back stronger this week!’
Joanna Williams (Year 9)

Play of the week

Play of the week

Here we recognise a team or player who plays sport for MLC School and shows exceptional sportsmanship or shows the MLC School values of respect, courage, compassion or growth. This can be shown at training or during a game/competition.

This weeks play of the week goes to Zoe Marshall (Year 9) in MLC03 hockey, who scored their only goal in their 6-1 loss last weekend but most importantly has made huge improvements not only in skill but in her confidence in communicating with her team. She plays centre back and really has carried herself so well the whole season! Well done Zoe!

Cadet Announcement 2025

Cadet Announcement 2025

At today’s Passing Out Parade, we proudly recognised a significant milestone in the life of the MLC School Army Cadet Unit — the formal appointment of our new cadet leadership team.

We also took the opportunity to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to our outgoing cadets and Year 12 leaders. Their dedication, energy, and passion have been instrumental in laying the foundation for all that our unit is becoming. They will be recognised with a final farewell at our Dining In Night next week.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of our inaugural cadet leadership group — a group of outstanding young women who have accepted the responsibilities of leadership with humility, commitment, and enthusiasm.

As leaders in a newly established unit, they will shape our culture, build new traditions, and guide their fellow cadets through a formative and rewarding journey. They have dared to lead, committing themselves to serve with integrity, compassion, and purpose.

We warmly congratulate them on their appointments and look forward to seeing them flourish as role models and leaders. Their journey will not only inspire their peers but help establish a proud and lasting legacy for the MLC School Army Cadet Unit.

A Student asks, ‘Why do Duke of Edinburgh?’

A Student asks, ‘Why do Duke of Edinburgh?’

A Student asks, ‘Why do Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)?’
As the DofE Award Leader at MLC School, I was recently asked by a Year 9 student, ‘What benefit is there in doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award?’ This question made me think that there might be other students and parents wondering the same thing, especially with everything else going on at the school. Who needs another distraction?

Firstly, as the Award Leader, my role is to help students make the most of all the curricular and co-curricular activities they are already involved in, whether it is at school or in their home life. My aim is to ensure as much as possible counts towards their award. Also, with the DofE Teams guidance and an engaged student, can have Bronze, Silver and Gold finished at the end of Year 10.

Here was my answer to the student: ‘It helps set you apart from other Year 12 students across the State by showcasing your exceptional time management skills, commitment, and dedication to serving the community. The award highlights to future employers and course interviewers that you can face challenges, step out of your comfort zone, and embrace growth opportunities. The DofE is a journey of personal development and transformation, empowering you to become resilient, resourceful, and confident leaders. Moreover, it provides a chance to build lasting friendships and connections with like-minded peers, fostering camaraderie and mutual support, showing your awareness of what it is to be part of a Team. The skills and experiences gained not only enhance academic and professional prospects but also contribute to a well-rounded and fulfilling life. Additionally, the award’s recognition by universities and employers adds significant value to your resume, making you stand out in a competitive environment. The sense of achievement upon completing the award is unparalleled and testifies to your perseverance and hard work. The DofE is an international award that officially rewards and acknowledges everything you do here at MLC School.’

We have regular DofE meetings in SG001 every Monday lunchtime, where students can drop and get their questions answered.

Speech and Drama students winners all round

Speech and Drama students winners all round

A massive congratulations to our students who all achieved winning places at the Inner West and Parramatta Eisteddfods last weekend. It was the final weekend of the Inner West Paramatta eisteddfod with Anisha Sivagurunathan (Year 11) winning first place at the Inner West Eisteddfod and the Kathryn Carter Memorial shield, and Aryana Sah (Year 11) achieving first place in the Open Age Character recital. This will likely be the last eisteddfod for these seasoned performers who have been competing as a duo, achieving winning places in every year they have performed since their Junior years. This was their first year performing solo and it didn’t hold them back.

A huge congratulations to Rachael (Pip) McGuire (Year 9) who achieved an impressive Highly commended in the Open age Shakespeare, performing with students two years older. Pip is also an experienced eisteddfod performer competing every year in multiple categories with outstanding results.

Our younger performers Natasha (Gem) McGuire (Year 4) and Sonia Chung (Year 4) lit up the stage with an impressive 2nd Place in Duologue in Costume at the Parramatta eisteddfod over the weekend. This was their 3rdeisteddfod this year, along with the Inner West and Ryde eisteddfods. Sonia and Gem have been performing in eisteddfods together from a very young age.

We are so proud of all our speech and drama students’ excellent achievements at the Inner West, Parramatta, Ryde and Sydney eisteddfods this term. MLC School students again impressed the Adjudicator, cementing our excellent reputation in the wider Burwood community and speech and drama circles.  They are wonderful representatives of MLC School.

The eisteddfods offer our students the opportunity to perform in front of an audience, challenge themselves to step out of their comfort zone and every year get a little bit braver.  Most importantly the eisteddfods are fun and create lasting memories.

Inner West Eisteddfod

  • Aryana Sah (Year 11) – Open age Character Recital in Costume:  1st Place
  • Anisha Sivagurunathan (Year 11) – Open Age Shakespeare: 1st Place and Helen Carter Memorial Shield
  • Rachael (Pip) McGuire (Year 9) – Open age Shakespeare: Highly commended

Parramatta Eisteddfod

  • Natasha (Gem) McGuire (Year 4) and Sonia Chung (Year 4) – 2nd Place

We look forward to more wonderful performances at the Ryde and Sydney eisteddfods next term.
