Newsletter | Term 1 | Week 7 2026 - 13 March 2026

From the Principal

Despite a very shaky start, where the NAPLAN online system literally fell over while many of our students were completing their writing tasks early in the week, the annual NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) testing is underway. NAPLAN is Australia’s annual nationwide test for students in Year 3, Year 5, Year 7, and Year 9, assessing foundational skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation), and Numeracy.

Each year, NAPLAN provides information about student achievement in literacy and numeracy across Australia. Like any single source of information, NAPLAN data has strengths and limitations. Used carefully and alongside classroom evidence, it can help schools spot trends and target support; used in isolation, it can oversimplify what learning looks like.

I have been saddened to see the plethora of NAPLAN study and preparation booklets available online and in our local newsagencies, claiming ‘This book will help you prepare for the Year 3 NAPLAN Test early, so you can get a head start!’

A headstart on what? NAPLAN tests are not a competition between children or between schools. Unsurprisingly this pressure, coupled with the misuse of NAPLAN data to rank and compare schools has resulted in rising anxiety amongst students who have suddenly and unnecessarily been led to believe that these are high stakes tests that will affect their future prospects and that consequently a young child must study and prepare, sometimes with coaching from a tutor. Nothing could be further from the truth. Equally worrying is the ranking of schools based on their NAPLAN performance. School performance is influenced by many factors including the language background of the students, the number of students with additional learning needs, the family and cultural background of the students. Without context, comparisons can be misleading.

NAPLAN is helpful for schools and teachers in that it:

  • Identifies broad patterns over time: When results are viewed across year levels and cohorts, they can highlight long-term trends (for example, improvement in spelling or a dip in numeracy).
  • Supports targeted teaching: Item-level insights can point to skill areas that may need extra teaching time (such as persuasive writing structure or reading comprehension).
  • Helps evaluate programs and initiatives: Over several years, NAPLAN data can be one piece of evidence about whether a whole-school approach is making a difference.
  • Enables benchmarking: It provides a common reference point across schools and systems, which can be useful for resourcing and planning. For this reason, we ask parents to provide NAPLAN data for incoming students.

However, it is one test on one day, it does not capture the full range of a student’s growth, effort, creativity, or wellbeing. Assessment covers literacy and numeracy only; other important areas (science, the arts, critical and creative thinking, physical education, and social-emotional learning) are not measured.

Our focus is on using NAPLAN as one source of information, alongside classroom assessments, teacher observations, student work samples, and student voice. We look for patterns across cohorts rather than drawing conclusions from a single student’s score.

  • To review whole-school and stage-based teaching priorities (eg: vocabulary, comprehension strategies, number sense).
  • To inform targeted support and extension, in consultation with teachers and learning support staff.
  • To monitor the impact of programs over time, using multiple measures of progress.
  • To guide professional learning for staff where the data suggests shared needs.

If you have questions about NAPLAN, or once the results are received, and your child’s performance, please reach out to your child’s teacher in the Junior School or Elizabeth Gilberthorpe, Acting Director of Studies Year 7 – Year 10 in the Senior School. The most helpful conversations focus on learning next steps – celebrating progress, identifying goals, and supporting a positive approach to reading, writing, and numeracy at home and at school.

Another First for MLC School

Another First for MLC School

For 140 years, MLC School has been known for looking ahead, embracing new ideas and new technologies early, not for novelty, but because the right tools help our staff teach, support and care for students even better. From the earliest classroom innovations to today’s digital learning environments, we have consistently asked the same question: ‘what will best equip our girls to thrive in a changing world?’ That future-focused mindset, grounded in our enduring Values, continues to shape how we learn, lead and serve our community.

Most recently, this commitment has been recognised through our continued partnership with Microsoft and our willingness to adopt emerging technology to strengthen how we operate behind the scenes. Our approach includes exploring new, AI-enabled tools that help our teams work more efficiently and enhance our cyber security posture, an essential part of keeping student and staff information safe in today’s environment. It’s another example of MLC School leading with confidence: honouring our 140 Year history as a ‘first’ mover, while investing thoughtfully in the systems and capabilities that will support our community for decades to come.

A warm welcome to Term 1 from the MLC School P&F Committee

A warm welcome to Term 1 from the MLC School P&F Committee

It’s hard to believe we are in March already!

We hit the ground running this year, with many events and activities happening and being planned. Commencement Day in January was a wonderful occasion as always, with the fizz of excitement and expectation that newness brings.

The P&F had a strong presence, with year group ambassadors attending to greet new parents and the Second Hand Uniform Shop open for business.

The Parent Welcome event in February was very well attended and again representatives from the P&F were there, answering questions, providing insights and of course having fun. The evening was most enjoyable, with good food, plenty to drink and great music!

We had our first General Business meeting of the year in early March. It was lovely to see parents attend and give suggestions and feedback that all help to improve our School. A couple of the items discussed were the options for the P&F’s gift to the School, which last year was the lighting for the Bird Bath Quad and a contribution towards the fun new playground in the Junior School and speakers and presenters for this year’s Parent Forums. We hope to have more information on these at the next meeting and encourage you to come along.

As always, the year group ambassadors have been busy organising coffee mornings, dinners and other gatherings, to build a sense of belonging and grow community spirit. The Junior School is always a hive of activity with many amazing things on offer, from the Cardboard Challenge to Mothers Day stalls and much more.

The P&F at MLC School is an active and welcoming group and I would be delighted to see more parents be involved. If you would like to know more about what we do or are interested in being involved, we would love to hear from you. All of the P&F Committee Members and our contacts can be found on Omnia by clicking here, and our next General Business meeting is on Tuesday 19 May 2026 at 8.45am. I am looking forward to seeing lots of you there!

Jocelyn and Stephanie represent at the Strathfield Youth Advisory Board!

Jocelyn and Stephanie represent at the Strathfield Youth Advisory Board!

Last Tuesday, we had the amazing opportunity to represent MLC School at the Strathfield Youth Advisory Board!

Comprised of a pair of students from schools located in the Strathfield electorate, the Youth Advisory Board allows like-minded students to raise concerns about the issues surrounding young people. Led by Jason Yat-Sen Li and Strathfield Council, the YAB is scheduled to meet four times in 2026 to allow for the discussion of real issues and their solutions.

In our very first session, we were assigned random groups and brainstormed the five main issues we believe young people face. Afterwards, we presented our thoughts and settled on three core ideas: mental health, social media, and religious/ethnic inclusion. Each year, the YAB establishes one main issue to tackle, and we found that our interest lay in the final idea: inclusion. This caused us to dive into insightful conversation, dealing with matters of religion and culture influencing the way people treat us, linking back to social media and its negative effects when distributing news. We were able to showcase our understanding of Australia and young people through our participation in group discussions.

In all, this experience was extremely valuable. We were able to meet likeminded, passionate young people, discuss real-world issues in detail, and hear from a variety of perspectives. We’re extremely grateful for this opportunity and are looking forward to the next meeting!

Multigenerational High Tea

Multigenerational High Tea

Last Sunday, our community came together for a truly special occasion in our 140th Year – our Multigenerational High Tea. It was a joy to welcome current students, Old Girls, grandmothers, mothers and alumnae, alongside their cousins, daughters, granddaughters and siblings, to share an afternoon of connection and celebration.

Across the room, conversations flowed easily as stories were exchanged, laughter was shared and generations reconnected over high tea (with a little sparkle, too). Moments like these are a beautiful reminder of what makes our community so unique: the relationships and traditions that endure, and the pride we feel in the legacy we share.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped create such a warm, memorable gathering. This event also marked a wonderful beginning to our 140 Year celebrations, and we look forward to sharing more opportunities throughout the year to come together, reflect and celebrate across generations.

Chaplain’s Corner

Honouring International Women’s Day and Harmony Week

Celebrating and honouring International Women’s Day and Harmony Week continued throughout the School this week and our School Chapel Service was blessed with the leadership of our Music, Community and Round Square Captains.

During chapel, a special Bible reading from Colossians 3:12-15 was shared, encouraging our School community to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. We honour the women in our lives – mothers, grandmothers, aunties, daughters, leaders, teachers, and friends – who demonstrate compassion, resilience, and care every day. Their nurturing spirits foster unity and peace within our families, communities, and society. By celebrating women, we acknowledge the richness and strength they bring to our collective story.

St Paul teaches us: ‘And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.’ Love is what connects everything. It turns compassion into action, forgiveness into reconciliation, and kindness into belonging.

When we celebrate Harmony Week and International Women’s Day together, we recognise that harmony and equality are intrinsically linked. Genuine harmony is built upon respecting and uplifting every individual, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard. As young people, our girls hold the power to shape the future – by listening, standing up against prejudice, and striving for fairness.

It is my prayer that the MLC School community will be inspired to reach out, connect, and celebrate the unique strengths and gifts of each person – choosing kindness, inclusion, compassion, and equality… making our School and community a place where everyone belongs and everyone thrives!

These operate 3.30pm–6pm Monday to Thursday during term time (please note they run till Wednesday only next week).

Year 11 and Year 12 After-Hours Study Hub

Recognising the importance of a conducive environment for focused study, MLC School has established a free after-hours Study Hub exclusively for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. Located on Level 3 of the Senior Centre, the Study Hub provides a quiet and supportive space where students can concentrate on their studies, complete assessments, and prepare for examinations under the supervision of experienced MLC School staff across many subject areas.

Key Features:

  • Experienced staff: Two teachers rostered each evening from different subject areas, to guide and assist students with their academic queries and provide valuable feedback.
  • Convenient location: Level 3 of the Senior Centre, providing easy access for Senior students.
  • Flexible hours: The study hub is open Monday to Thursday 3.30pm–6pm, allowing students to make the best use of their time outside regular school hours. Partial attendance is welcome.

We encourage all Year 11 and Year 12 students to take advantage of this excellent resource to enhance their learning experience and achieve their academic goals. The staff roster will be published in advance of each week in Audacia, the School newsletter. Students will be required to sign in on arrival to Study Hub and sign out on departure, as part of our student welfare management system.

There is no need to register for this program.

Study Hub+

Study Hub+

Term 1 2026 Study Hub+  – Fill in form

Study Hub+ is MLC School’s structured, pay‑per‑use after‑school study support program, designed for students in Year 7 to Year 12 who would benefit from more personalised academic guidance in a focused and supportive environment.

While the Study Hub provides a supervised space for independent study for Year 11 and Year 12, Study Hub+ offers a higher level of individualised, responsive support. Sessions are student‑led, allowing mentors to tailor assistance based on each student’s specific needs on the day. This may include consolidating class learning, clarifying assessment requirements, preparing for examinations, or developing effective and sustainable study routines.

Led by Program Coordinator Ela Huber, Study Hub+ is supported by a team of knowledgeable mentors, all of whom are pre‑service teachers or working towards a career in education. Most mentors are in the final stages of their undergraduate or Master of Teaching degrees and bring with them a strong depth of subject knowledge, alongside up‑to‑date, innovative and curriculum‑aligned resources. This ensures students receive guidance that is relevant and closely aligned with classroom expectations.

A key strength of Study Hub+ is the opportunity for students to work alongside a mentor, particularly when engaging with written tasks. Mentors can read through work with students, ask guiding questions, suggest improvements to structure, clarity and expression, and help students refine their ideas and arguments. While mentors are unable to mark work or provide grades, they can offer valuable feedback and editing support prior to submission, helping students better understand how to improve their work independently.

Mentors can support students with:

  • Revising and consolidating key concepts and class content
  • Examination preparation and revision strategies
  • Planning and organising assessments and study schedules
  • Reading through drafts alongside students and suggesting edits or refinements
  • Developing confidence, independence and effective study habits

Study Hub+ also plays an important role in supporting students in an era where AI is a valuable and encouraged tool at MLC School, but one that requires thoughtful, ethical and informed use. Students can sometimes over‑rely on AI when completing homework and assessments, which may leave them unsure about underlying concepts, task expectations or how to improve their own work.

At Study Hub+, mentors help reinforce the appropriate and ethical use of AI by guiding students to use these tools as a support for learning rather than a replacement for thinking. Mentors work with students to unpack questions, clarify concepts, check understanding and refine ideas, ensuring students remain actively engaged in their learning and confident in the work they submit.

Program Overview

  • Schedule: Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm–6pm (term time)

Mathematics Enrichment Opportunity: Kangourou sans Frontières (KSF) Competition

Mathematics Enrichment Opportunity: Kangourou sans Frontières (KSF) Competition

Congratulations to over 40 MLC School students who took up the Bebras Algorithmic Thinking Challenge last week! If you’re ready to put your problem-solving skills to the test and enjoy mathematics, the Kangourou sans Frontières (KSF) competition is coming up in Week 9. Inspired by the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), KSF is the largest mathematics competition in the world, with over 6 million participants annually.

This is a fantastic chance for students to challenge themselves in a competition environment before the AMC in August. Whether you’re passionate about mathematics or just looking for a way to develop your problem-solving skills, KSF is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.

The cost of this competition is $5.50. Those that are interested in participating should complete the registration form by 9am Friday 20 March.

From the Head of Junior School

Thank you to all Kindergarten to Year 5 Churunga families who attended our Sunday Chapel service last weekend.

NAPLAN

This week, our Year 3 and Year 5 students participated in NAPLAN. At MLC School, we do not ‘drill’ students to sit NAPLAN. Drilling is not learning. Instead, we support all students through high‑quality, explicit teaching in English and Mathematics. We empower our students to become independent thinkers while developing confidence as learners.

If your daughter participated in NAPLAN this week, please praise her for giving her best effort, with the understanding that NAPLAN is one component contributing to a much broader picture of her as a learner.

Parent/Teacher Learning Conversations

This week we offered Parent/Teacher Learning Conversations for Mathematics. These conversations provide an opportunity for parents and carers to connect with your daughter’s Mathematics teacher, where this differs from her class teacher.

Thank you to staff and parents who took the time to connect over the past fortnight as part of this important home–school partnership.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is a significant and important event in Australia. Our multicultural diversity is one of the many gifts of our School. Students learn about the significance of Harmony Day in class, and the Junior School Student Council (JSSC) is leading lunchtime activities during Harmony Week.

The Senior School celebrated Harmony Day early, on Thursday 12 March, with a mufti day, and Year 6 students were invited to participate. On the Junior School campus, noting that we have recently celebrated Carnivale and that NAPLAN continues for some students, it has been decided that Pre‑Kindergarten to Year 5 students will receive a school‑supplied orange ribbon to wear on Monday 16 March 2026, the beginning of Harmony Week. Your daughter is encouraged to wear her orange ribbon to school each day during Harmony Week.

This year’s theme is ‘Everyone Belongs’. When your daughter arrives home with her orange ribbon, you may wish to discuss the importance of belonging – how we all belong in our School, wider community and country. The rich diversity at MLC School is one of our many strengths, and our support for one another is something I am immensely proud of.

Did your child forget to bring an item to school?

During the primary years, children gradually learn to take on more responsibility for themselves and their belongings. There will be times when your child unintentionally leaves something at home, perhaps library books, a musical instrument or a towel for swimming lessons. In most cases, the school day will still be a success, and parents shouldn’t feel the need to drop items off at school. More importantly, these moments provide valuable learning opportunities for your daughter to develop resilience and organisational skills.

Car Park

Thank you to all parents and carers who are arriving on time. This greatly assists with the staggered pick‑up of different year groups. Pick‑up times are as follows:

If you have children with varying pick‑up times, please collect your daughters at the same, later time. Please note that pick‑up and drop‑off are not permitted on Park Road.

Pick‑up and supervision conclude at 3.40pm. Children who have not been picked up by this time will be taken to our Uniting MLC School Outside School Hours Care. Please ensure your child is registered HERE

Our Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) service remains open until 6pm each weeknight.

Always drive safely in the School Car Park. The safety of children, families and staff is everyone’s responsibility.

Cardboard Challenge

Our Cardboard Challenge is next Friday 20 March 2026! Students are reminded to wear their House colours. House tops and/or caps may be worn throughout the day, and caps will be available for purchase on the night.

For Year 6 students, please note the sister Houses:

  • Families may commence arriving from 5pm, with the official start time at 5.30pm

Book Cardboard Challenge tickets here

Please start bringing your cardboard donations to school from Monday 16 March. There will be a designated drop‑off area in the car park, located near the car drop‑off and pick‑up zone.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Staff Spotlight

Harmony Day is officially celebrated on Saturday 21 March 2026, which also coincides with World Down Syndrome Day. With this year’s theme, ‘Everyone Belongs’, it is fitting that this week’s Staff Spotlight features Danielle Pham, our Junior School Administration Assistant.

Danielle Pham is a valued member of the Junior School community, working as an administration assistant at MLC School during term time. In her role, Danielle supports the Junior School through a range of clerical and cleaning tasks, which she approaches with pride and enthusiasm. She takes great enjoyment in her work and is well known for her warm presence and friendly interactions with staff and students alike.

After completing her schooling and HSC Life Skills, Danielle gained extensive workplace experience through supported employment, including five years of clerical work at ABC Ultimo with JOBSUPPORT. These experiences have helped shape the strong work ethic and confidence she brings to her role at MLC School today.

Outside of her time at MLC School, Danielle maintains a very active and independent lifestyle. She is an active member of Let’s Get Going initiatives and enjoys keeping busy with fitness, cooking, swimming and community activities throughout the week. She is also deeply committed to personal growth, serving as the secretary of her Toastmasters Club, where she continues to develop her public speaking skills.

Danielle’s positive outlook, determination and love of life are evident in everything she does. As we acknowledge World Down Syndrome Day, we celebrate Danielle’s contributions to MLC School and the richness she brings to our community through her dedication, independence and joyful spirit.

Pre-Kindergarten Enjoy a Visit from Year 11 and 12 Psychology Students

Pre-Kindergarten Enjoy a Visit from Year 11 and 12 Psychology Students

On Thursday 5 March after recess, our Pre-Kindergarten girls enjoyed a special visit from our Year 11 and Year 12 Psychology students with their teachers Wayne Symes and Phoebe Sze.

As part of their studies in learning theorists and how children develop and learn, the older students spent time engaging with our young learners through play, conversation and shared activities. It was a wonderful opportunity for our Pre-Kindergarten students to interact with older students while the Psychology class observed real examples of curiosity, exploration and learning in action. We loved seeing the connections formed and the smiles shared throughout the visit.

Kindergarten Book Picnic

Kindergarten Book Picnic

Thank you to the parents and carers who joined us for our first Kindergarten Book Picnic last week. It was a lovely opportunity to come together as a learning community, sharing stories and enjoying time together.

Reading supports children’s language development and nurtures a love of learning. It also reflects our shared commitment to growth and connection, as children feel encouraged, confident and proud when families are actively involved in their learning. We value these moments of partnership between home and school and appreciate the time families take to support their child’s reading journey.

We look forward to welcoming families again at our next Book Picnic on Friday 20 March 2026.

Excitement for Year 2 Excursion

Excitement for Year 2 Excursion

On Wednesday 11 March, Year 2 went on an excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney and the Art Gallery of NSW. We travelled by bus and were very excited for the adventure.

At the gardens, we participated in the Connection and Country program. We discovered the fascinating world of local native plants in the gardens. We learnt how Aboriginal people use plants for food, medicine, tools, and weapons. Our guides showed us many plants and explained how they were important to First Nation people long ago and still today.

After this, we walked to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. We explored the Mike Hewson exhibition called The Keys Under the Mat.’ We had a great time interacting with the interesting playground.

The excursion provided valuable hands on learning experiences that supports our learning in the classroom across various key learning areas.

Year 5 Reflections on Leadership Day

Year 5 Reflections on Leadership Day

‘At Leadership Day I learned that you don’t always need to speak in front of people to be a leader. I also learned that one person’s idea is not as good as two peoples’ ideas. I learned about teamwork and helping people without being annoying. Leadership day was a fun and educational experience.’

– Gem McGuire (Year 5)

‘I learnt that Leadership is guiding others and working as a team with others. A quote reads, “A sign of a good leader is not how many followers you have, but how many leaders you make.”

This shows that a good leader cares for others, rather than showing off and acting like they have all the power.’

Evelyn Tsang (Year 5)

  • Just because you have a badge, that doesn’t mean you’re a leader
  • Cooperate with your peers
  • Be honest and truthful
  • Work as a team
  • Everyone has a chance so don’t exculde anyone
  • Every role matters
  • Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses
  • Different people mean different speaking levels
  • Leaders aren’t always at the front
  • Make mistakes as a team

– Tarlay Edwards (Year 5)

‘Leadership Day was so much fun. Not only did we play games, we learnt a lot about being a good leader. I learnt that leadership isn’t just about you – it’s about the team. When I was younger, I thought it was about telling people what to do. I also learnt that guiding is better than telling people what to do when they need help. We can always ask for help from others in the process. I also learnt that a good leader doesn’t have to be perfect or the smartest. A good leader is someone who has a good influence, is helpful, kind, and respectful, and works as part of a team with their portfolio. That day, Cameron taught all of us that just because you’re not good at public speaking doesn’t mean you’re not an amazing leader, and that everyone has different strengths. Just because you’re not a captain doesn’t mean you’re not a great leader.

– Alicia Wen (Year 5)

‘My reflection on leadership is that you need to include everybody and work as a team. Leadership is helping others and putting them before you. Leadership is also cheering others up and making them feel that they are wanted. Leadership isn’t about showing off, seeking glory, or thinking that you’re the best.’

– Isabella Ye (Year 5)

‘On Leadership Day, I learnt that leadership is helping and encouraging each other, and that there are different types of leaders. I learnt that a leader doesn’t have to do speeches or be talkative – there are quiet types of leaders too. Leaders can also influence others. I also learnt that communicating is a big part of leadership.’

– Hillary Gu (Year 5)

Year 6 – Connections with Real-Life Service

Year 6 – Connections with Real-Life Service

Last Friday, a group of Year 6 girls visited Uniting Locke Haven, providing a meaningful opportunity to connect real‑life service with the values of the Uniting Church. The visit was a great success, filled with laughter, singing, shared stories and, of course, ice cream. Most importantly, it was a chance for the girls to build connections and bring joy to others. Below are some reflections from the girls about their experience.

During our trip to Uniting Haven Locke our favourite part of the day was meeting all the kind elderly people and hearing their stories, seeing their beautiful AI posters, and writing gratitude notes to all of them. This experience is one we will never forget.’
– Lucie Elias and Vaani Narang

‘In our trip to Uniting Haven Locke,  I loved meeting the kind, elderly people, performing our songs, listening to advice, and learning about their pasts. We looked at their projects about “Hug Your Younger Self”. One man told me that he came from Ireland and travelled to Australia by boat. Thank you for letting us contribute to this wonderful program.’
– Serena Li

‘I really enjoyed going to the nursing home and meeting all the elderly and learning all their stories. They gave us some useful advice for the future, for example ‘don’t rush making money, just enjoy the little bits of life’. Overall it was a great experience, and I hope I can do it again.’
– Peita Nikolakopoulos

‘I am so glad l got to experience the “Hug Your Younger Self” program, and to see all the elderly peoples quotes and the time I had with them. l learnt about their personalities, and they told us ‘not to rush your life, and to take your time”.’

This week, we celebrated Harmony Week in the Senior School. Harmony Week will be celebrated throughout Australia from next week, but being the pioneering school that we are, we have decided to celebrate early this week as our Year 12 students will be sitting their examinations next week.

Harmony Week is a special time dedicated to celebrating our diverse community and fostering inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone. You can find more information here: Harmony Week. Throughout this week, our School hosted a variety of activities aimed at bringing students together and highlighting the importance of cultural harmony. Highlights include Monday’s Luminary session featuring discussions on cultural inclusiveness and creative art-making, Harmony Week Chapel services on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Thursday’s cultural dances, games and mufti day. All week long, students have enjoyed international music and special cafe offerings with food from around the world, plus participate in the ‘What does Harmony Day mean to you’ interactive whiteboard activity.

This week I accompanied Year 11 students, Stephanie Keo and Jocelyn Su to the 2026 Youth Advisory Board for Strathfield run by Jason Yat Sen-Li, our State Member for Strathfield. Click here for Stephanie and Jocelyn’s story. Our students joined representatives from all over the electorate to discuss issues facing our students today. On the way back to school, the girls mentioned religious inclusivity was a major topic. They noted that, unlike other schools, MLC School’s Uniting Church is very inclusive, so they didn’t relate to some of the issues discussed. This certainly made me proud!

Chapel this week was the highlight. Our Chapel service for senior students was led by Senior Chaplain Rev Vinnie, Chapel Captain and Year 12 student Ella Hu, Community and Round Square Captain and Year 12 student Emily Wu, Diversity Captain and Year 12 student Rhiti Bhatta, Environment Captain and Year 12 student Eri Takeshita and Wellbeing Captain and Year 12 student Laila Chopra. Our Music Captain and Year 12 student, Juah Hyun led a trio on strings to accompany the School for our hymns.

I was particularly moved to lead prayer for Harmony Week and Year 12. This prayer was written by Rev Vinnie and I have included the text here:

‘Prayer for Others, Ourselves and the World

As we celebrate Harmony Week, we thank you O Lord for the rich diversity that surrounds us and for the chance to learn from one another. Remind us that everyone belongs, and help us to embrace each person with open hearts and minds, regardless of background, culture, or faith. Guide us to walk together in respect and understanding, so our communities become stronger and more united.

May kindness, compassion, and acceptance fill our days, and may we always strive to make everyone feel valued and included. Inspire us to be peacemakers and bridge builders, so that together we create a world where harmony truly reigns and everyone belongs.

We now uplift our Year 12 to you Lord… As their exams approach, we ask for guidance, strength, and peace in their hearts. May they find focus in their studies, patience under pressure, and courage to face each challenge. Grant them clear minds to remember, … and give them resilience to rise above setbacks and gratitude for the journey so far.

Bless all Year 12 students with hope and confidence as they embark on this special time of exams in the next two weeks! This we ask in your name. Amen.’

Lastly, a huge congratulations to Year 7 and Year 9 for the resilient way that they approached the state-wide issues with NAPLAN this week. A special thank you to Elizabeth Gilberthorpe, Acting Director of Studies – Year 7 to Year 9 for the way that she has kept us all smiling and informed!

My Mind Check – Consent requested from Parents Year 7 to Year 12

At MLC School, the wellbeing of our students is a priority. As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting students’ mental health and wellbeing, we are using My Mind Check, an evidence‑based digital check‑in tool developed by Macquarie University.

My Mind Check provides students with a safe and structured opportunity to reflect on how they are feeling in key areas of their mental health and wellbeing. It helps us to better understand student wellbeing needs, in order to identify areas for intervention and provide appropriate targeted support when required.

My Mind Check is not a clinical assessment or diagnosis. Instead, it offers insights that support early identification, wellbeing conversations, and timely pastoral care for our students.

For more information, click on the website for My Mind Check here.

New Future and Pathways Student Intranet for Year 10 to Year 12

New Future and Pathways Student Intranet for Year 10 to Year 12

We are pleased to introduce the new Future and Pathways intranet site, a central hub supporting students in Year 10 to Year 12 with career planning, subject choices, work experience and post‑school pathways. The site includes resources such as all university applications, scholarships, admission schemes and upcoming events, and can be accessed via students’ Luminary Home page. Students can also request one‑on‑one careers meetings through the online booking form on the site.

While this platform will be the primary communication portal for students, parents and carers will continue to receive key updates through Audacia, the weekly newsletter.

さようなら れい先生!Sayonara Rei Sensei

さようなら れい先生!Sayonara Rei Sensei

This week, we farewell to Rei Sensei, who has been a popular assistant Japanese teacher over the past four weeks. Her guidance and encouragement in both classroom settings and at Japan Club have been greatly appreciated by the students. In observance of Harmony Day, students participated in a cultural activity making orange origami hearts.

As a Goodwill Ambassador for Gunma Prefectural Women’s University, which encourages female leadership, Rei Sensei has effectively promoted Gunma’s culture within our classrooms. She introduced students to customs specific to Gunma enhancing their cultural awareness and language proficiency.

Morinaga company based in Gunma, produces the well-known Japanese confectionery Hi-Chew, contributing to the city’s appeal as a travel destination. Many students now look forward to visiting Japan and applying their language skills in the future.

Thank you Rei sensei! おつかれさまでした

Year 7

Year 7

It has been a busy week for Year 7, celebrating Harmony Week as a school and starting NAPLAN. Our Monday Luminary session centred on Harmony Week, offering Year 7 an opportunity to explore and celebrate the diversity within our MLC School community. Each student decorated a paper figure representing their culture, prompting conversations about identity and heritage. As part of this session, Luminaries also reviewed the Weekly News together, taking note of key events. This routine continues to help Year 7 build confidence in planning, organising and preparing for the week.

Tuesday’s Chapel service was also focused on Harmony Week, and several Year 7 students volunteered to lead the service as readers. Thank you to Emily Moore, Ella Woolrych, Louise Morgant, Mariella Tsolis, Maya Tong-Ho, Jeselle Jiao and Henriette Pitman for their courage and leadership.

The highlight of the week, according to Year 7, was the session with their Year 11 Big Sisters, click here for the story and more photos. On Thursday, Year 11 led a range of activities with their Year 7 Little Sisters, designed to support connection and build a sense of belonging at MLC School. Walking past each session and listening to the conversations and laughter emanating from each room, it is clear that Year 7 genuinely value the support provided by their Big Sisters and the sense of community that these partnerships build.

Looking Ahead

Week 8 (Monday 16 March 2026) will bring further opportunities for community connection, starting with the Year 7 Study Skills Evening on Monday. Thank you for your ongoing partnership and for the encouragement you provide at home – your support makes a meaningful difference in how confidently Year 7 approach their learning and experience at school.

Year 7 PDPHE Build Strong Foundations

Year 7 PDPHE Build Strong Foundations

This term in Year 7, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) students are building strong foundations for lifelong health through a combination of practical movement and theory learning. In practical lessons, students develop fundamental movement skills such as agility, coordination and spatial awareness through inclusive Playing for Life activities that promote confidence, teamwork and enjoyment of physical activity.

In the Choosing Wisely theory topic, students explore how everyday decisions impact health and wellbeing. They examine nutrients, energy needs, and healthy eating guides to better understand balanced food choices, as well as how emotions, peer influence and risk‑taking can affect decision‑making. Together, these learning experiences support students to make informed, positive choices for their health.

Year 8

Year 8

Year 8 have had a positive week, engaging well with the ACER Social Emotional Wellbeing Survey and continuing strong discussions around wellbeing in Luminary time. Students also embraced Harmony Week, participating enthusiastically in Mufti Day by wearing orange or cultural dress and contributing to a gold coin donation for charity. Year 8 also had Big Sister Little Sister which is a huge highlight. This time it was Year 8 students turn to run an activity for their Big Sister and the various Luminary groups engaged in cookie decorating, Harmony Day colouring and fun outdoor games.

Looking ahead to Week 8 (Monday 16 March 2026), our selected students will take part in the Strong Together service program with Inner West Neighbour Aid for their first session with some Senior Citizens, and I know they are very excited. We are looking forward to hearing how the first sessions go. Next week also sees a number of assessments, and it’s been encouraging to see the Year 8 students preparing well and engaging with these tasks.

Have a lovely weekend, and please reach out to the Luminary or myself if you have any concerns.

Year 9

Year 9

This week marked the inaugural Year 6/Year 9 Buddy Session, a wonderful opportunity for our Year 9 students to step into a leadership role. Paired with a Year 6 student, they spent Luminary Time on Monday playing games, sharing food, and getting to know their younger buddies. It was a highly enjoyable and positive experience, and I was particularly impressed by the maturity, organisation, and ease with which our Year 9 students embraced this responsibility. The impact on our Year 6 students was equally evident; when we came together in Chapel on Tuesday, they were eagerly waving and smiling at their Year 9 buddies – a very heart‑warming sight. The photos for this week are from this session.

The Senior School is also celebrating Harmony Week this week, with a range of activities led by our Round Square IDEALS Society. During Luminary Time on Thursday, students were invited to decorate a figurine representing their cultural background, using flags, colours, traditional dress, or other meaningful symbols. The diversity and creativity of the designs were impressive and served as a powerful reminder of the rich multicultural community we are fortunate to have at MLC School. Weeks such as this provide valuable opportunities to celebrate and reflect on the importance of inclusion and belonging.

Finally, a reminder that permission and medical forms for Urban Challenge are now overdue. At the time of writing, 18 of the 89 students have not yet submitted the required documentation. I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter to ensure your child is able to participate.

Year 10

Year 10

We’ve been celebrating achievements and diversity in Year 10 this week. In a busy week of assessments and preparation, Year 10 found time to reflect on the meaning of Harmony Week during Luminary Time and in Chapel. The music was beautiful and Potts Hall gave the ceremony a very special atmosphere

In a range of achievements celebrated this week, Veronica Pan was invited to perform at the AMEB ceremony after receiving her LMusA with Distinction in Clarinet. Georgia Coxsedge has been selected to play as a Shadow in the Football NSW U16 State Teams. Georgie is also competing for selection in NSW Hockey and NPL Football. Melisande Pitman and the Year 10 Round Square group participated in an online postcard with Australian and overseas schools, discussing issues on International Women’s Day.

Anna Michalopoulos, Head of Counselling and Student Health, and the Counselling Team gave a great presentation on self-esteem and confidence. ‘Miss Anna’ showed the girls how to manage negative self-talk, how to ‘talk yourself up’ and how comparing yourself to others is ‘the thief of joy’. Year 10 participated so well and listened attentively. For access to our counselling department, students can check in with their Luminary, myself or self-refer by emailing the counsellors on Counsellor@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au.

The girls will be busy over the next couple of weeks, managing their assessment program and for some, preparing for Cadet camp. We encourage the girls to prioritise their diet and sleep for brain health and exercise to channel stress into something more positive. Sometimes friendships and relationships are tested and we encourage the girls to be kind to themselves and others in the process.

Thanks for your participation in the vaccination program this week. If your daughter missed out on the vaccination at school, please see your local GP for advice.

For academic issues, please reach out to your daughter’s class teacher. For pastoral and wellbeing issues, please contact your daughter’s Luminary or me. I am available on sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au or 02 8741 9736 by phone or on Teams. We also offer on-site meetings and welcome parents to come in to school to discuss their daughter’s wellbeing.

Year 10 Career Profile Program – Next Steps

Year 10 Career Profile Program – Next Steps

We are pleased to share the successful completion of the Year 10 Career Profile testing and follow‑up interviews. Students accessed their reports and arrived well prepared, asking insightful questions and demonstrating a genuine willingness to reflect on their strengths, interests and future possibilities. We thank students for the effort they invested, and we have received very positive feedback from parents and carers, many of whom found the process insightful and valuable in supporting students’ ongoing growth, goals and aspirations.

Students will continue their career development through a range of structured exploration activities during Academic Care and Luminary time, as well as group sessions across the term. These sessions will allow students to extend their research through the Career Avenues platform, alongside curated resources and videos provided by The Careers Department.

This independent career research will support students in identifying industries and workplaces of interest, helping them to source suitable placements for the dedicated Work Experience program in Term 4, running from:

Monday 30 November to Friday 4 December 2026

During this time, students will be based in the workplace with their host employers and will not attend school. This valuable experience provides students with first‑hand insight into industries and roles they may be considering for their future pathways. Students are encouraged to begin seeking and securing host employers early, as many schools run work experience programs during the same period. Further information about the program will be shared in the coming weeks.

Year 11

Year 11

Year 11 had a wonderful week, highlighted by our celebration of Harmony Week. Thursday was a particularly special day as students came dressed in cultural attire and a splash of orange to recognise Harmony Day’s message of inclusivity, respect and belonging. The diversity within the MLC School community is a real strength, and it was amazing to see this celebrated so proudly by our students.

During Luminary time on Thursday, we held our second session with the Year 11 students’ Little Year 7 Sisters. This continues to be one of my favourite parts of our pastoral program. I love seeing the excitement, care and genuine connection the Year 11 students bring to these sessions. The girls planned a range of engaging activities, including outdoor games, baby photo competitions and quizzes, all designed to help the Year 7 students feel welcomed and get to know their Big Sisters better. I am incredibly proud of our Year 11 students and the positive role modelling, leadership and guidance they are providing.

We also continued our focus on leadership this week. On Monday, students spent time exploring their individual strengths and passions, and reflecting on what each person can contribute to a team. These conversations are helping students develop greater self-awareness and an appreciation of the diverse strengths within their cohort.

Finally, this week Stephanie Keo and Jocelyn Su had the exciting opportunity to participate in the first Youth Advisory Board for the Strathfield electorate. They engaged in thoughtful discussions about decisions impacting young people and shared their perspectives on issues relevant to their generation. This was a valuable leadership experience and a wonderful example of student voice in action. You can read more about their experience here.

UCAT Registrations Now Open

UCAT Registrations Now Open

Students considering Medicine or Dentistry are reminded that UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) registrations are now open, and noting these dates is essential.

The UCAT is a mandatory admissions test used by most Australian universities to shortlist applicants for medicine and dentistry and is considered alongside academic results and interviews. Missing registration or booking deadlines can mean students are unable to apply for these courses at all, regardless of academic performance.

Early awareness also allows students to plan preparation time and secure preferred testing dates and locations, which can fill quickly. Families may find it helpful to explore preparation information and resources through providers such as:

NIE – The National Institute of Education and MedEntry

Year 12

Year 12

This week as a school we celebrated Harmony Week, with a range of activities designed and coordinated by our captains. Students participated in Luminary activities, wore cultural dress or a splash or orange on Thursday and were treated to range of international cuisine and music across the week.

On Wednesday, Emily Wu, Community and Round Square Captain, Rhiti Bhatta Diversity Captain, Eri Takeshita, Environment Captain and Laila Chopra, Wellbeing Captain joined Ella Hu, Chapel Captain to help deliver this week’s Chapel Service, recognising both Harmony Week and International Women’s Day. The captains joined Rev Vinnie and Pastor Luisa exhibiting both leadership and honoured their roles as community centred captains for all students in Year 10 to Year 12. The beautiful orchestral music was again performed by our students in this week’s Chapel Band – thank you to Juah Hyun, Music Captain for another delightful musical performance.

As we approach the upcoming Year 12 Examination Block, we ask that all Year 12 students approach this fortnight with a strong sense of responsibility and focus. David Posker-Hill, Acting Director of Studies – Year 11 to Year 12 and Marianna Carlino Acting IB Coordinator, advised students of their responsibilities regarding the examinations, that students are expected to arrive punctually and as prepared as possible. They reminded the cohort that this is an important time to maintain routines, minimise distractions and use revision time purposefully.  Level 3 will be available as a supervised space for students to work quietly and independently between examinations, and students are encouraged to make full use of this environment to support their preparation.

Over the coming weeks students in Year 12 will be participating in IGSA Swimming and Diving Championships (today), House Chapel Services (as listed below), Tildesley Shield Tennis, NSW Schoolgirl Head of the River, the Australian Rowing Championships, rehearsals for the Senior School Production and so much more… I’m so proud of you all and wish you all the very best!

Important Announcements

Important Announcements

As we approach the upcoming school holidays, the MLC School Sport Department is pleased to announce that a comprehensive Holiday Clinic Program will be offered during the break.

Clinics will operate across both Week 1 and Week 2 of the holidays and will include sessions in Tennis, Hockey, Netball, Basketball, and Diving. These clinics provide an excellent opportunity for students to further develop their skills, maintain fitness, and continue building confidence in a positive and supportive environment. Further information regarding specific dates, times, and costs is available via the Sport Registration pages released next week.

Term 2 sports trials are progressing well, with excellent participation across all sports. It’s great to see so many students signing up for Saturday sport in the coming term.

As we move past the midpoint of Term 1 competitions, it has been particularly pleasing to see positive improvements in training attendance and strong participation at weekend fixtures. This commitment reflects the growing pride students are taking in representing MLC School and contributing to their teams.

Today is a big day for our MLC School students competing at SOPAC in the IGSA Swimming and Diving Championships. We wish all participating students and coaches the very best of luck.

Our Rowing Crews are also in action this weekend at the Sydney International Regatta Centre for one of the biggest events of the year, Head of the River. We look forward to seeing the girls continue their strong performances.

With one of the biggest IGSA events of the year next week, Tildesley Tennis, taking place, we wish all our singles and doubles players the best of luck. On that note, we are also excited to welcome Adrian Montgomery to the MLC School Sports Team as our new Senior Sports Coordinator. With 24 years of tennis coaching experience, Adrian brings a deep passion for player development and a strong commitment to helping athletes grow both on and off the sports fields.

Over the past 7 years, Adrian has served as the Head Tennis Coach at Ravenswood School for Girls, where he also held broader leadership roles, including Snowsports Coordinator, and was a key organiser supporting major school carnivals and sporting events. He is a Tennis Australia Club Professional Coach, USPTA Elite Professional, and RPT Head Professional/Professional Tennis Director – qualifications that reflect his long-standing dedication to excellence in coaching and coach education.

Adrian’s coaching career has taken him from Sydney to Austria, where he ran his own coaching business, worked with clubs, and coached and travelled with State and National champions. He has also supported players competing in International Tennis Federation (ITF) events, Tennis Europe tournaments, US College tennis, and Junior Grand Slams.

His diverse background and passion for athlete development make Adrian an outstanding addition to our team, and we are extremely excited to have him on board. Adrian will be joining us on Monday 30 March 2026.

We look forward to a strong finish to the term, MLC on 3!

Reflections from the Gender Equity Committee

Reflections from the Gender Equity Committee

Last Friday, on 6 March, MLC School hosted its annual International Women’s Day breakfast, where we brought like-minded people together to discuss prevalent issues regarding gender inequality regarding this year’s theme of Balancing the Scales. It was an amazing experience where the community came together to celebrate the impact of female role models in our lives. We had the opportunity to hear from guest speakers Old Girl, Pauline Blight-Johnston (1988) and Jane Lim, who shared important insights into leadership, perseverance, and service within their respective fields. They provided experience on professional growth and their individual insights of being a woman.

As part of the celebrations the Gender Equity Committee organised some activities during Luminary time to help educate students and allow for them to reflect upon and engage with the day. Students learnt about the origins of International Women’s Day – beginning in the early 1900s and being officially recognised by the UN in 1975 – as well at this year’s International Women’s Day theme of Balance the Scales. Students then participated in a letter writing activity called ‘because of her…’ where they wrote letters to women who inspired them or positively impacted their life. In some cases, these letters were just a means of reflection and in others they were passed on to the recipient: a friend, teacher, coach or relative!

This past Monday, the Gender Equity Committee had the opportunity to attend a Gender Equity Forum at Newington College. As the first forum of the year, it was enjoyable to return to discussions and debates on important issues. After an opening presentation for all participants, we split into smaller discussion groups, which gave everyone the chance to share their perspectives and contribute to the conversation.

Some of the key topics raised included the differences between co-educational and single-sex schools, the ongoing lack of women in executive leadership positions, and the gradual increase in fathers taking paternal leave. These issues, along with the conversations they sparked, were both insightful and thought-provoking, highlighting the importance of continuing and normalising open discussion about gender equity.

Overall, it was a very informative and engaging afternoon. The forum inspired us to bring several of these ideas back to our weekly Gender Equity meetings so we can continue discussing how we can contribute to positive change within and outside of the MLC School community.
