Year 8 Strong Together

Year 8 Strong Together

MLC School is delighted to partner with Inner West Neighbour Aid (IWNA) to give our Year 8 students the opportunity to give back by offering service in our local community. This week saw our first service for a group of Year 8 students joining the Strong Together program – part of the Health and Wellbeing activities offered by IWNA. The program provided includes morning tea, gentle exercise, lunch and activities, with a real focus on friendship and conversation as seniors attend on a regular basis on the same day of the week.

The girls took part in engaging conversations, learning about the similarities and differences in school experiences, led by IWNA staff. Next month they will be planning their own activities to run with the regulars, building inter-generational relationships as they go!

Here’s what some of the girls had to say:

“The Strong Together program is such a fun and amazing experience that helped us meet new faces and hear some wonderful stories from some seniors in the Inner West. This week, we sat around a table and shared memories from our school days. We each answered a question about our experiences, and some of the responses had us laughing out loud with their silly and crazy stories. It was a great opportunity to connect across generations and build our social skills. I had a lovely time, everyone was so kind, and I can’t wait to go back next month!”

– Caitlin Ward (Year 8)

“This week was our first session with the older community, and it was so fun. Each person was willing to talk about their experiences and compare memories. It was absolutely amazing, seeing pictures of the younger versions of themselves and hearing them chat about the evolution of pens. We learnt lots about how they got to school and the differences in different countries. Honestly, I can’t wait for the next session!”

– Aurora Sharma (Year 8)
