From the Head of Junior School

From the Head of Junior School

It has been another action-packed week in the Junior School with many events and parent visits. Pre-Kindergarten hosted their Celebration of Learning. Thank you to all parents and carers who were able to join us for their daughter’s very first Celebration of Learning.

This week we held our Term 2 P&F meeting for both the Whole School and Junior School. I am so grateful to this committed group of parents. You are most welcome to attend and for those who are unable to do so, thank you for supporting our P&F initiatives.

Junior School Photo Day

Pre-Kindergarten and Junior School House (Kindergarten – Year 5) photo date is set to take place on Monday 2 June 2025. Further details can be found in this newsletter.

Opera House Concert

In this week’s newsletter edition you will be read about our renowned, high calibre Opera House Concert. I am immensely proud of the Junior School students that performed from Year 3 to Year 6. The quality of music at MLC School never ceases to amaze me. Congratulations to all involved and our thanks to all the dedicated staff who made this memorable evening possible.

National Simultaneous Story Time

National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual event where a specific picture book is read in schools and libraries across Australia at the same time on the same day. What fun Pre-K to Year 5 had on Wednesday performing a theatre play of this year’s book “The Truck Cat” by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell. Please take the time to read about it in our library news

da Vinci Decathlon

On Tuesday the Junior School had student representatives from Year 4 to Year 6 participate in the da Vinci Decathlon. da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate students’ minds as they compete across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy. Our student representatives have been meeting and working towards this event, and we congratulate them on their success. Year 6 came third in Science. We are so proud to see young women achieving such an accolade in a traditionally male dominated domain. Well done girls!

Pre-Kindergarten Celebration of Learning

On Wednesday morning, our Pre-Kindergarten girls proudly hosted their Celebration of Learning, welcoming parents into their studio and specialist areas to share the excitement of their school experiences. Families enjoyed a heartwarming student performance of songs, followed by engaging visits to our specialist areas – STEM, Art and Library – where the girls showcased their creativity, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning. It was a joyful morning of connection and celebration!

With thanks to parents for attending and to our wonderful specialist teachers Louise Piggott (Library), Sophie Grattan-Smith (music), Marian Doull (Art), Marie Cassar and Bede Schofield (STEM) for joining us for this special celebration.

Year 3 Fizzics Incursion

Year 3 Fizzics Incursion

On Thursday 15 May, our Year 3 girls attended a Fizzics Education Science Incursion. This term their CLP unit is “Properties Influence Purpose.” It provided a fantastic opportunity for the students to delve into the fascinating world of science.

The incursion allowed the students to hypothesise and participate in a variety of fun hands-on experiments and activities. These activities were aimed at investigating different materials, their properties, and the states of matter. The girls loved exploring concepts such as solids, liquids, and gases, and seeing firsthand how the states of matetr can change under different conditions.

Throughout the incursion, the girls were encouraged to ask questions and make predictions. It was a great learning experience!

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 25th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

The Junior School celebrated the event by joining together in The Daphne Line Hall on Wednesday 21 May to read The Truck Cat. The library leaders did a wonderful job of presenting the story! Our School was one of 2,204,658 participants!

From the Head of Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

As the week draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the whirlwind of activity that has unfolded across our school community. It has been a remarkable showcase of talent, dedication, and teamwork, with events ranging from the creative to the competitive!

The week began on a high note—quite literally—with a stellar performance at the iconic Sydney Opera House. Our students dazzled the audience with their artistic flair, demonstrating the dedication and countless hours of practice that went into crafting such a memorable production. The mass choir pieces were a highlight for me!

Meanwhile, our Year 11 students and their families engaged in Parent-Teacher interviews that underscored the importance of communication and collaboration in the educational journey. These conversations foster meaningful connections between teachers and families, setting the stage for continued growth and academic achievement as students prepare for the challenges ahead. It was great to see the Senior Centre buzzing with learning conversations.

This week, our students excelled in various academic competitions such as Da Vinci Decathlon, the Dame Enid Oratory Competition, Debating and Mock Trial and that is all before we delve into the excitement of sports! Our athletes are gearing up for this weekend’s fixtures, and we are crossing our fingers that the rain holds off.

Staffing news

Our Head of English, Tim Curry has announced that he will be leaving us at the end of the Term to return to his former school, Monte Sant’ Angelo. Tim has made the decision to step back from middle leadership for personal reasons and to focus on further study and professional growth.

During his time at MLC School, Tim has been an effective and committed leader—both within the English Department and more broadly across curriculum, teaching and learning initiatives.

I am pleased to announce that Deb Moir will step in to lead the faculty as Acting Head of English. Deb has many years of experience as the Assistant Head of English and she also led the faculty as Acting Head of English in 2022. We will shortly begin the recruitment process for a permanent Head of English to join us in 2026.

In Term 3, Tim’s Year 11 and 12 classes will be taught by existing experienced senior HSC and IB English teachers in Deb Moir, David O’Donohue and Bridget Kovats. In order to support them to take on these Senior classes, there will be some minor movement with their Junior classes. We will be in contact with parents and students around these movements before the end of Term. As always, we prioritise and balance our students learning with staff wellbeing when considering staffing solutions.

Year 7

Year 7

Congratulations to all the amazing Year 7 students who sang and played at the Opera House concert on Monday night. Throughout the night I could see Year 7 students front row in the massed choir, singing beautifully in Senior Choir and playing wonderfully as part of an ensemble. The girls were truly incredible, it was a long day and Year 7 pushed through to be a part of something very special.

This week Year 7 had a Big Sister Little Sister session with Year 11 which was lots of fun! Activities were prepared by Year 11 and there were games, chats and connections shared. Year 7 will host their Year 11 Big Sisters later in the term and will be able to plan the session for them.

In our Year 7 Meeting, students were given a hard copy of the ‘What to Bring’ list for the upcoming camp. I encourage you to speak with your daughter about what was detailed in this meeting. Important things to note are that students require a soft duffel bag to carry the bulk of their items, and a small backpack as a daypack. Students should be wearing enclosed shoes throughout the camp (i.e. sturdy runners). Students asked about Crocs and Ugg boots and I have suggested they are too bulky to pack and not needed. Students are permitted to bring them, however, will only be permitted to wear them in the dorm rooms. Students will not be allowed to wear them to the dining hall, during any activity or when camping out. Finally, students are asked to abide by regular school rules for jewellery and hair. Angela Renwick (Adventure and Immersions Coordinator) and I have filmed a short video for families to answer some frequently asked questions about camp, and I hope you find a spare five minutes to watch by clicking on the thumbnail below.

Have a wonderful weekend and please contact your daughter’s Luminary or teachers if you have any questions.

Year 7 Investigating forces

Year 7 Investigating forces

Before the Opera House concert, Year 7 were able to investigate whether the number of petals on a paper flower affected the time it took for the flower to open in water. Students coloured in the flowers, cut them out and floated them on the water, starting their stopwatches as the flower slid onto the water surface. Time was up when all of the petals touched the surface of the water. Students calculated the number of seconds it took for each flower to open and tabulated their data.

Year 8

Year 8

What a week! We kicked off Week 4 with the MLC School Opera House Concert, always a memorable and special night for musicians as well as the broader Senior School community. I want to offer congratulations to our Year 8 musicians, their commitment, dedication and collaboration made for a polished performance on the night. Thank you as well to all of Year 8 for your rehearsals, enthusiasm and poise in performing in the massed choir. I am so proud of all your efforts and was simply in awe of you all as I stood side of stage and backstage throughout the night (photos attached from the rehearsal performance).

On Tuesday, Year 8 had their cohort Chapel Service led by Pastor Caitlin Scott. The focus of the service was on spotlighting women who have been encouraged to lead others, guided by their faith. Students heard the biblical story of Deborah and in her reflection, Pastor Cailtin spoke of modern examples of women who have been guided to lead those around them, including Sojourner Truth and Malala Yousafzai. Thank you, as always, to our Year 8 student volunteers who offered to read a verse or prayer during the Service.

This week the Year 8 Service Initiative with Inner West Neighbourhood Aid commenced. Two groups of students travelled to Croydon Park Club on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon to meet with members of the local community to start their inter-generational relationships. We look forward to seeing the girls develop confidence in planning events, activities for their groups and working collaboratively in support of the Strong Together program. Read more about this here.

During our Year Meeting on Wednesday Xavier Maling (Cadet Coordinator) introduced Year 8 to the Cadet Program. He shared the role and responsibility of cadets and gave some insight into this cocurricular activity, commencing for those interested in Term 3! Year 8 also received some first-hand accounts of the varied experiences offered through the program with Year 12, Year 11, Year 10 and Year 9 students sharing what they have valued in their time as cadets and spoke to what students could expect should they take up this opportunity.

Just a note regarding uniform – several students are arriving at school without their tie and wearing the school scarf to disguise the fact. The scarf is not an essential part of the school uniform, but the tie is. Can I please ask for your support in ensuring your daughters are leaving the house in correct, full winter uniform?

Year 8 Strong Together

Year 8 Strong Together

MLC School is delighted to partner with Inner West Neighbour Aid (IWNA) to give our Year 8 students the opportunity to give back by offering service in our local community. This week saw our first service for a group of Year 8 students joining the Strong Together program – part of the Health and Wellbeing activities offered by IWNA. The program provided includes morning tea, gentle exercise, lunch and activities, with a real focus on friendship and conversation as seniors attend on a regular basis on the same day of the week.

The girls took part in engaging conversations, learning about the similarities and differences in school experiences, led by IWNA staff. Next month they will be planning their own activities to run with the regulars, building inter-generational relationships as they go!

Here’s what some of the girls had to say:

“The Strong Together program is such a fun and amazing experience that helped us meet new faces and hear some wonderful stories from some seniors in the Inner West. This week, we sat around a table and shared memories from our school days. We each answered a question about our experiences, and some of the responses had us laughing out loud with their silly and crazy stories. It was a great opportunity to connect across generations and build our social skills. I had a lovely time, everyone was so kind, and I can’t wait to go back next month!”

– Caitlin Ward (Year 8)

“This week was our first session with the older community, and it was so fun. Each person was willing to talk about their experiences and compare memories. It was absolutely amazing, seeing pictures of the younger versions of themselves and hearing them chat about the evolution of pens. We learnt lots about how they got to school and the differences in different countries. Honestly, I can’t wait for the next session!”

Whitley House reflections on the Exodus Service Day

On Friday 16 May, students from Whitley House travelled to Ashfield to volunteer at the Exodus Foundation Loaves and Fishes Free Restaurant. Their reflections from the day are included below:

“This was an extremely rewarding experience because we were given the opportunity to help others in need. We worked together to package 1024 containers of powdered milk and oats. In the process we learnt about the Bill Crews foundation and the way it helps people in our community. We packaged, taped and labelled with drawings to brighten people’s day. We are so grateful for this experience as we learnt so much and were able to give back to the people in need.”

Urban Challenge | Winners Announced!

This week, staff from Urban Challenge returned to MLC School to present a slideshow reflection of the experience and announce the winning team. Teams collected points across the week by completing a variety of tasks and challenges, and were judged on their enthusiasm, teamwork and resilience, amongst other things. Congratulations to Team 2 and their teacher Manuel Condoleon, who were announced as the winners.

Some highlights from the team blogs are included below:

“Today we completed the Spit to Manly walk. Throughout the walk we saw beautiful views and different wild creatures such as water dragons and a stingray. After we finished our hike we treated ourselves to some ice cream. We finished our day with a MasterChef cooking competition!”
Team 2

“On Day 3, we took a bus to Our Big Kitchen, where we got to cook meals for people in need. Making Thai curry spaghetti and fruit skewers, our hearts were warmed knowing we made a difference in the world today!”
– Team 4

“During Day 4 of the Urban Challenge, we went to Manly. While at Manly harbour, we picked up rubbish on the beach and also learnt about plastic pollution and what we can do to make a difference.”

Year 9 PASS Students Dive into Nutrition and Physical Activity

Year 9 PASS Students Dive into Nutrition and Physical Activity

This term, our Year 9 PASS students have embarked on an exciting journey into the world of nutrition and physical activity. As part of their curriculum, they are exploring the vital role that nutrition plays in sports and everyday life. The unit has been designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the subject. So far students have learned about the different types of nutrients, their functions, and how they contribute to overall health and athletic performance. Another key area of focus has been the investigation of fuel sources. Students have explored how the body uses carbohydrates, fats, and proteins as energy sources during various physical activities.

One of the highlights of the term has been the practical labs, where students have had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real world scenarios. In a recent lab, students investigated the effectiveness of sports drinks versus water as hydration strategies during training. They conducted experiments to measure hydration levels and performance outcomes, gaining hands on experience in scientific inquiry and data analysis. As we move forward into the term, students will continue to explore more advanced topics in nutrition and physical activity. They will engage in further practical labs and projects that will challenge their critical thinking and problem solving skills. We are excited to see how these experiences will shape their understanding and inspire them to make informed choices about their health and fitness.

Year 10

Year 10

What a great start to the week with the Opera House Concert on Monday! It was such a joy to watch both musicians and non-musicians perform at such a high level. The dedication and talent displayed by our students was impressive. Well done to all the Year 10 students involved in the performance! It’s always a privilege to witness the commitment our MLC School girls show in their co-curricular activities.

Year 11

Year 11

As we conclude Week 4, it is remarkable to realise that we are already approaching the halfway mark of the term. This week has been another eventful one in the world of MLC School.

We commenced the week with the Opera House Concert, and for those fortunate enough to attend, I am sure you would agree that it was a spectacular event. I was thoroughly impressed with all the performers, as well as the crew who worked tirelessly to set up the stage for each piece. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the Year 11 students who participated in the event, as well as those who attended and supported their peers.

Year 11 also hosted their ‘Little Sisters’ from Year 7 during Luminary time. The focus was on fostering compassion for others as Year 7 students prepare for their adventure camp. Year 11 students helped to alleviate any fears and anxieties the Year 7 students were experiencing and also helped to generate excitement about the activities and adventures that lie ahead.

Eight of our Year 11 students recently competed at Knox Grammar School in the da Vinci Decathlon. This academic competition is designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students, fostering a spirit of intellectual curiosity and teamwork. The competition saw students competing in teams of eight across ten diverse disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics and Chess, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography, and Legacy.

MLC School’s team excelled in several categories, securing 1st place in English, 3rd place in Cartography, and 3rd place in Creative Producers. Their outstanding performance earned them a commendable 4th place overall in the competition. Heartfelt congratulations are extended to Year 11 students Bella Nguyen, Anna Obaid, Elena Tulloch, Anisha Sivagurunathan, Umaiza Mafuz, Allegra Chiang, Jordan Vo, and Kimberly Chou for their well-deserved achievements. Their hard work and commitment have brought pride to our school community.

In other exciting news, Harriet Hahn (Year 11) was honoured as one of the ten finalists in the prestigious Dame Edith Lyons Oratory Competition, held at the Opera House on Wednesday evening. This competition is renowned as the most esteemed public speaking event for girls in New South Wales. Harriet delivered an inspiring speech on the historical silencing of women, earning a commendable 3rd place overall in the event.

Enjoy your weekend.

Year 12

Year 12

As another ‘last’ event for Year 12, they had their last Opera House concert on Monday as MLC School students. As part of the MLC School community, the door never really closes and we would love to welcome them back as alumni next time.

It was such a special event for our group, and they have been working hard on the routines, stage management, performances and pieces for months. On Tuesday in our Year meeting, the whole group was still buzzing from the excitement of the performances, chatting about which one was their favourite. It was a long day with study prep in the morning for many of the girls and then travelling into the city. The girls got a great opportunity to spend time with their friends, eating dinner at the Opera House and just taking in the beautiful views. Their behaviour was exceptional, and they were a great role model for the younger girls. Kirriana Edwards-Ware (Year 12) did the Acknowledgement of Country address as beautifully as always. The Year 12 musicians and stage crew, under the leadership of Hannah Banks (Year 12) as Music Captain and Tiana Robinson (Year 12) as Stage Crew Captain plus our wonderful dancers, represented their year group so well. Hearing the music staff farewell Year 12 with a surprise rendition of ‘Que sera sera’ on stage was a moment I’m sure they won’t forget. There are many names to mention but Justine Zhang’s violin solo and Uma Singleton and Evie Papamanuel’s vocals were highlights, not to mention the many Year 12 students leading the Senior choir, such as Emily Davis.

This week in Luminary time, we begin a program of Careers presentations, organised by Jo Cilia, our Head of Futures and Pathways. Please check in with your daughters about these and encourage them to read the weekly emails that alert Year 12 to open days, early entry applications and careers options. Our girls have been very proactive in seeing Jo for advice and the meetings work well if students have completed some research beforehand about what they would like to do next year. All of Year 12 have accounts with the Careers Department – see link here.

Our Careers centre on Level 3 is full of wonderful brochures, information and browsing is highly encouraged!

Attendance by Year 12 in classes has greatly improved this week and we encourage you to let us know of any issues that your daughter is facing around attendance. Term 2 is a busy schedule of content and assessments and teachers are working hard to support their students. Despite the attraction of platforms like Canvas, the classroom experience and support cannot be replicated online. Many girls have been using their study periods to check in with teachers about major works, etc and we encourage them to use their study periods at school productively so that girls can go home and rest and connect with family.

If you have any concerns about your daughter’s progress, please contact their class teacher. For pastoral and wellbeing concerns, please contact me or your daughter’s luminary.

Frequently asked questions

Why are we changing our Bachelor of Laws entry requirements?

The LAT was introduced to expand access to our Law double degrees. With admission pathways for underrepresented students now in place, the LAT’s importance is changing. We also recognise that the LAT adds pressure to students just before the HSC exams, and it can disadvantage students who either weren’t aware of it or didn’t register in time.

How will this affect my students?

We’re taking a phased approach to the LAT closure. We’re continuing with the LAT in 2025 to avoid an abrupt change to the cohort of students seeking admission in 2026.

We understand that prospective students have placed significant importance on UNSW’s use of the LAT, and many students in Year 11 in 2024 have already sat the LAT in anticipation of 2026 admission.

What are the key dates for students wishing to sit the LAT this year?

17th MLC School Sydney Opera House Concert – Fate, Fortune, and Fantasy

Congratulations to all the performers, members of the backstage crew and staff involved in the 17th MLC School Sydney Opera House Concert – Fate, Fortune, and Fantasy.

The concert was a wonderful mix of challenging, traditional works juxtaposed against sing-along favorites; there really was something for everyone. The performance of Alice Chance’s composition ‘How will we know til we go’ involved the MLC School massed choir, Senior School choir, Angeli choir and the Symphony Orchestra and was a highlight. Alice graduated from MLC School in 2011 and is currently our Head of Composition. It was in her final year at MLC School that Alice really started to believe that she could become a composer. She went on to study composition in Sydney and Paris and was awarded the 2024 APRA AMCOS Work of the Year: Large Ensemble for her work The Changing Landscape.  Alice remembers her time singing from the stalls in the Opera House and thinking “one day my work will be performed here.” I truly hope that our current students felt equally inspired to dream because of their involvement.

While the concert was a collective effort and our students were truly remarkable, our Music staff deserve particular recognition. Thank you and congratulations to:

  • Trevor Mee
  • Elizabeth Gilberthorpe
  • James Larsen
  • Jamie Castrisos
  • Ying Ho
  • Laura McDonald
  • Alice Chance
  • Sophie Grattan-Smith
  • Amanda Lavender
  • Conor O’Reilly
  • Megan Ling
  • Samantha Kelson-Gray
  • Vicky Rodrigues
  • Jessica Jones

and all our music tutors.

Dame Edith Lyons Oratory Competition

It was not only our musical strength that was on show this week. Congratulations to Harriet Hahn (Year 11) who placed third in the grand final of the prestigious Dame Edith Lyons Oratory Competition held at the Opera House on Wednesday night. In her 8-minute impromptu speech, Harriet passionately discussed the topic “for most of history, anonymous was a woman.” She emphasised the importance of single-sex schooling for girls to ensure they are heard and grow up confident in their right to hold an opinion and expecting it to be heard. Her speech was a wonderful demonstration of an MLC School student ‘daring to be more.’For more information on the Dame Enid Lyons Competition and Harriet’s wonderful result, please click here.

Harriet Takes 3rd Place at the inaugural Dame Enid Lyons

Harriet Takes 3rd Place at the inaugural Dame Enid Lyons

When Harriet Hahn (Year 11) agreed to be the MLC School contestant in a new public speaking competition for Senior girls she did not expect the new places it would take her. The inaugural Dame Enid Lyons impromptu public speaking competition was set up to match the similar boy’s competition, The Lawrence Campbell, which has been running for ninety years. So, it was past time to have an event where the voices of young women were heard.  From a starting group of 26 students from schools all over Sydney, Harriet won though to the final as one of ten contestants.

On Wednesday, I accompanied Harriet to Admiralty House in Kirribilli to meet Her Excellency Sam Mostyn, the Governor General of Australia, an invitation extended to all ten finalists to congratulate them on their achievement.  The Governor General was so generous with her time and offered inspirational advice to a group of young women yet to start their future careers. As a group we heard first-hand how the process for chosing the Governor General, what it takes to do the job and what have been her best experiences after a year in the job.  We also met and heard from the group of accomplished young women who are the Governor General’s staff, their stories were aspirational for a group of transfixed Senior school students.  Harriet was amazed when the Governor General informed her that her own daughter Charlotte was an MLC School Old Girl.

As if the morning’s event was not enough excitement, it was off to the Opera House for the final in the evening.  It was a nervous but energised group of coaches, parents, family, friends, fellow students and our Principal Lisa Moloney who gathered in the Drama Theatre for the event. Finalists were given three quotes as prompts and then had 15 minutes in a room alone with only palm cards and a pen to prepare an eight minute speech to present to the audience.  This is one of the most difficult forms of public speaking and Harriet gave a great speech about the challenges of schools trying to transition from single sex to co-education. The three judges took a long time to decide the winner finding it difficult to split the top three speeches. In the end Harriet took out 3rd  place!

Thank you, Harriet, for all the extra time you have put in doing special training for the event and for representing our School with such grace and talent. Congratulations!

Introducing the new Director of Learning Enhancement

Introducing the new Director of Learning Enhancement

I would like to introduce myself as the new Director of Learning Enhancement Pre-Kindergarten – Year 12. As a future focused educator, I am passionate about facilitating learning as each student’s personal strengths and areas of challenge help shape a thriving, inclusive learning community. The purpose of the Learning Enhancement Department is to guide and support collaborative partnerships with the young women of MLC School and their families to tailor experiences allowing each student to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.

The National Education Standards Authority, (NESA) states that, “Every learner is unique, and every learner deserves opportunities to grow and strive to reach their full potential.” This guiding principle reinforces the commitment of Learning Enhancement to support the creation of differentiated, mindful educational experiences. Such experiences should celebrate diversity across the learning continuum in a nurturing and adaptive environment empowering all learners to excel.

I am truly grateful for the warm welcome I have received from the school community. The openness to collaborate and caring nature of staff, students and families confirms that, by working together as one community dedicated to lifelong learning, our girls will thrive. I look forward to partnering with you to ensure that the journey is both enriching and empowering for your daughter.

IPSHA Football Trials

Does your daughter in Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 play competitive football for a club or representative program?

Students should be experienced playing Football for a club or representative program (Not just the MLC School Team).

If you would like your daughter to be considered for this trial, please send through her;

  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Playing History
  • 2 positions she plays

Who should consider trialing?

Athletes who are in Year 4, Year 5 or Year 6

Athletes who have at least 2 years experience playing for a Football club (not just school Football).

Athletes who play representative Football.

Trial Date – Thursday 5 June, 2025

Should your nomination be accepted, further trial details will be sent through.

Parents are responsible for transporting their daughter to and from the trials.

If you would like to be considered for the trials, please email the sports department by COB Wednesday 28 May, with your daughter’s name and playing history.

Volleyball

The Friday Night Volleyball competition is an interschool sporting event held weekly at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College. Our Senior representative team plays against other schools in a series of evening matches throughout the term, and after three weeks, we’ve started the season strong.

The competition gives our players the chance to put their skills into practice in a high-energy, supportive setting. The team has stayed undefeated so far, taking solid wins over Meriden, Barker, and St Scholastica’s, without dropping a single set. Each match has shown how well the players are working together, with sharp communication, smart plays, and a lot of trust on court. It’s been a fun way to end the school week and the players have taken each game as an opportunity to grow, both individually and as a team.

Netball Umpiring Update

Celebrating Olivia Burke’s Success in the Umpire Development Program

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the wonderful achievement of Year 8 student, Olivia Burke, who has been participating in the Umpire Development Program at Eastwood Ryde Netball Association. This short but impactful six-week program provides students with the opportunity to build their umpiring knowledge and skills while being mentored by experienced umpires, all with just a Saturday morning commitment.

Olivia has spent the last five weeks learning the ins and outs of umpiring, guided by her mentor Riley Chantler, a 2024 Old Girl. Under Riley’s support and encouragement, Olivia has grown in both confidence and capability, showing strong leadership and decision-making on the court.

Now entering her final week of the program, Olivia is preparing to umpire full games independently, a testament to her dedication and progress. Watching her develop each week has been inspiring, and her enthusiasm and commitment have not gone unnoticed.

We congratulate Olivia on her efforts and can’t wait to see her in action on the court. Her journey is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through hard work and guidance, and we hope it encourages more students to take part in the Umpire Development Program in the 2026 netball season.

IMPORTANT PROCEDURES FOR SPORT

Absences from Sport

What to Do When You Are Not Able to Make Training or a Game

On the rare occasions that it may be necessary for a player to miss training or a competition, please follow these instructions.

  • If the inability to attend is known in advance – a written explanation (email) from the player’s parent/guardian is to be given to the coach and sports department in advance. This notice should be given as early as possible.
  • If the player is absent from school on the day of training or on competition day – the player’s parent/guardian is asked to advise the coach and sports department of their child’s absence from training or the game.
  • Do not ask your friends or team mates to give your coach the message
  • Do give as much notice as possible
  • If there is a clash with another sport or school event, please speak with the sports department to determine which game/event you should attend.

Please Note: Continued failure to attend training or competitions without a timely written explanation is unacceptable and may jeopardise the player’s continued involvement in sport.

A member of the sports department will contact Parents/guardians of students whose non-attendance at training or games is not notified in the correct manner.

Pockets are only awarded to students who have met all requirements of training and games.

Wet Weather

What do I do if it is Wet Weather?

While on most occasions we would not cancel training for wet weather, cancellations may occur if rain is too heavy to train in or weather conditions deem it unsafe. Additionally, we may be required to cancel training when we cannot accommodate students safely in an indoor space.

FOR MORNING TRAINING

The decision to cancel any morning training sessions will be made by 8pm the night before training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page, and a notification on the MLC School app.

No Facebook post, or app notification means that activities will still go ahead.

FOR AFTER SCHOOL TRAINING

The decision to cancel any after school training sessions will be made by 1pm on the day of training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook Page and the MLC School app.

ON SATURDAYS

If you are playing an IPSHA Sport, please download the IPSHA App – this can be downloaded from the App store and has information for parents. It is also used to send push notifications for Girls Saturday Sport weather updates and for marshalling calls at Major Carnivals.

IPSHA normally make a decision about wet weather by 7am.

If you are playing an IGSA Sport, go to the following link https://igsasport.spawtz.com/

The IGSA website will let you know if your venue is closed or open.

When possible, we will also post the cancellations on our Sport Facebook Page and the MLC School app.

On all occasions, it is the individuals’ responsibility to check the wet weather information. The sports department, coaches and managers are not always in a position to relay any game cancellations.

da Vinci Decathlon

da Vinci Decathlon

Nothing can deter our high potential students from attending the Knox da Vinci Decathlon Competition.  For some, it was arriving at school at 6:45am after the magnificent Opera House concert.  For others it was getting to Knox despite the chaos of Sydney trains.  When it appeared, we might have been stuck on Hornsby Station, I heard girls offer to pay for an Uber to Warrawee – we can’t miss the first challenge!

All of our teams from Year 5 through to Year 11 had a wonderful time competing with hundreds of like-minded students from across the Sydney metropolitan area.  The event enriches, excites and challenges students to think hard, strategise and work effectively as a team. Our girls exceled and gave their very best.  While the final results for the event will be published in the coming fortnight, we did have some placings on the day:

  • Year 10: 1st in Engineering
  • Year 11: 1st in English, 3rd in Cartography, 3rd in Creative Producers
  • Year 6:   3rd in Science

Congratulations to all the girls involved and a special thank you to the teachers who helped train and support the girls for this event.

“Today at the Eisteddfod, it was my first time giving a speech. All the kids were really amazing and when I listened to everyone speak, I got scared and worried I wouldn’t be as good as them. Waiting in line for my turn was so nerve racking and when they called me up, I could suddenly feel my blood flow super fast and my heart thumping in my chest.

Standing on stage was scary. I just kept repeating the same words my mum told me, ” just focus on your own speech and give it your all,” and with that, I went up, and did my best. Upon reaching the end of my speech, I saw a horrified expression on the Adjudicator’s face when I said, “And always, ALWAYS make sure there’s water in the pool before jumping in!”. That was so funny as I must have scared her!

So when they called out the placements in the end, my body was so tense! Names were called out one by one and when I realized I was the last one sitting down I knew at that moment, I had come first and I did! I couldn’t believe it! I stood up there holding the trophy in my hands and I couldn’t help but smile. After all, I guess I did a good job”
Elizabeth Feng (Year 3)

“I’ve had such an amazing experience of both practising my piece with Ms. De Marco (Matilda) and competing in the Memorised Prose Category at the Inner West Eisteddfod. If you get nervous, try warming up your voice early to calm your nerves. I thank Ms. Dee for teaching me this technique and being my teacher since I was in Kindergarten.“
Catherine Coorey (Cathy) (Year 6)

“The Inner West Eisteddfod allows me to express my interest in speech and drama, and I am so grateful to my drama teacher, Ms Lisa, for helping me to figure out some amazing actions to go with the poem that I successfully performed.”
Daisy Han (Year 6)

“I started out by finding the right text for myself. I found one immediately. I felt like I knew how to act this character. Brave and bold, curious and caring. Then it was onto the practicing part. I practised my monologue every week and got better and better.  However, I couldn’t have done it without support from my parents and Ms Fort. They were a big help in the process of preparing for my performance.”
Marina Chen (Year 4)

“Participating in the Inner West Eisteddfod since the age of 7 has been a rewarding experience for me. Performing in front of an audience and receiving feedback from the adjudicators can be daunting but it has helped me build more confidence year after year. With the guidance of my amazing drama teachers, I have learnt to manage my nerves and do my best always on stage. For anyone looking to challenge themselves and try something new, I would strongly recommend taking part in the Eisteddfod!”
– Abira Sanan (Year 7)

Wishing our 11-12 years 13-14 years sections the very best of luck for this weekend!

Craft Club Update

Craft Club Update

The Arts and Craft Club members were absolutely honored to assist global organisation ‘Days for Girls’ in their mission towards eliminating stigma towards sanitary products in low income countries. Our members traded in their paintbrushes for purpose as they dived into a while new challenge-rolling underwear for care kits and tracing fabric to create sustainable hygiene kits for women all around the world. The members were exceptionally productive, rolling upwards of 75+ underwear for a good cause.

This week’s focus wasn’t just about creating, but about making a difference on the community. Using fabric, scissors, and their enthusiasm, members traced carefully and folded underwear efficiently-with every piece destined to become part of a care package. Our club collaborates with ‘Days for Girls’ every term, assembling reusable kits with compassion. No experience is needed to make a big difference-only a willingness to help those around them.

If you’re looking for a relaxed and  welcoming space where you can support a good cause, come by SCG06 on Wednesday. All supplies (and snacks) are provided!
