Year 6 Sydney Science Park Inquiry Projects

We are very grateful for all the connections that our School community is able to put us in touch with.

One of our Year 6 Parents, Deb Jenkins, was able to connect us with Kate Dryden from Sphere Infrastructure. Kate’s agency, Sphere, ‘works across all sectors of environmental infrastructure and services (including water, waste and energy) to help clients deliver on their goals by providing expert guidance on technical, financial, commercial, legal and strategic aspects of their business or projects.’

This aligns exactly with the Year 6 ‘big idea questions’ in which they are developing solutions for their Sydney Science Park Inquiry projects.

Kate shared ideas and inspiration for the Year 6 projects about how the circular economy can incorporate the use of water, waste and energy in the world. From creating energy from garbage waste to heat fish tanks, to using electric cars to reduce gases in the environment when transporting.

She shared her expertise, allowing the girls to think beyond their large project ideas at Sydney Science Park, to smaller projects for businesses or individual houses. Showing that changing human behaviour through incentive initiatives (such as the return and earn bottle recycling program) and petitioning councils and government to change legislation (such as plastic bags being banned in many shops) are also viable and worthy solutions to their ideas.

Every parent and friend of a Year 6 MLC School student is assisting as a Primary source and expert in their field of the girls’ inquiry projects. A big thank you to all involved.
