Newsletter | Term 3, Week 6 2023 - 25 August 2023

From The Acting Principal

Over the past few months our staff members have been working proactively with Burwood Council to explore ways to keep our students – your children, safe around the perimeter of the School. There have been ongoing reports of dangerous driving and poor decision making, which continue to create unsafe situations for our students. For example, there have been complaints about parents dropping off their Junior School daughters on Park Road and having near misses as the students dart across the road; parents making three point turns on Park Road; parents blocking the driveways of residents, and more. Burwood Council has increased Ranger presence and are issuing fines, but the safety of our students is of paramount importance. We urge you to be extra cautious when driving around our school premises. The beginning and end of the school day are busy times, with children arriving and departing, and we all have a role to play in making sure these moments are as safe as possible. Please be reminded of the following:

  1. Mind the Speed Limits: Speed limits are set around schools for a reason – to protect our children. Please adhere to these limits and drive at a speed that allows you to react quickly to any unexpected situations. Remember, a moment’s hesitation can make all the difference.
  2. No Mobile Phones: Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents. When you are near the School, please put away your mobile phone. Keep your attention on the road and be prepared for sudden stops or changes in traffic flow.
  3. Follow Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures: Familiarise yourself with the School’s drop-off and pick-up procedures. These guidelines were designed to keep traffic flowing smoothly and to ensure the safety of students as they enter or exit vehicles.
  4. Watch for Buses: School buses are frequent visitors to our campus. Be aware of bus stops and the rules about stopping for buses when they have their stop signs and flashing lights on.
  5. Park Responsibly: If you need to park your vehicle, do so in designated areas. Avoid double parking, blocking footpaths, or stopping in no-parking zones. This ensures clear visibility for all, prevents unnecessary congestion, and ensures our neighbours can enter and exit their homes.
  6. Be Patient: During drop-off and pick-up times, there may be a higher volume of traffic. Patience goes a long way in maintaining a safe environment.
  7. Teach by Example: Children often notice the behaviours they observe. Show them the importance of respect and responsible driving by adhering to traffic rules and displaying courtesy to other drivers and pedestrians.
  8. Stay Informed: Keep an eye out for any updates from the School regarding changes in traffic patterns, road closures, or safety reminders. Staying informed will help you make the best decisions while driving around the school.
  9. Report Concerns: If you notice any safety concerns or witness dangerous driving behaviour around the School, do not hesitate to report them to the local authorities. Your vigilance can make a significant impact on the safety of our community.

By practicing safe driving habits around our School, you contribute to the wellbeing of our students and help create an environment where everyone can thrive

While I am speaking of parental behaviour, the Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA) have asked all member schools to remind parents about the IPSHA Sport Code of Conduct.

Engaging in sports offers children valuable life lessons, fitness, and a sense of camaraderie. However, the success of children’s sports experiences goes beyond the field. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping their child’s perception of sports, competition, and teamwork. To ensure a positive and constructive environment, the implementation of the IPSHA Code of Conduct is paramount. This code establishes a set of expectations for parental behaviour during practices, games, and interactions with coaches, officials, and other parents.

IPSHA Code of Conduct

  • Play by the rules
  • Respect the official’s decision
  • Make it a positive experience for the children
  • Focus on efforts and performance rather than the result
  • Remember they are children, and it is a game

Any complaints should not be made during the game and should be referred to your daughter’s Director of Sport, and any action should be left to his/her discretion.

Under no circumstances should parents contact other schools directly.

It is our shared responsibility to ensure that our School is a place where students can learn, play, and grow without unnecessary risks or negativity.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our School community.

Taking the pulse on learning

At MLC School we value the girls having a voice in their learning. We encourage and value feedback as a two-way process as we work together to help them achieve their best. While much of this happens informally, we do have in place some more formal processes. One of these is the semester Pulse Surveys. Each semester we ask the girls to answer three questions about their learning in relation to specific subjects.

On a scale of agree to disagree students respond to the following questions.

  • I am able to stay focused during lessons in this class.
  • My teacher makes lessons interesting in this class.
  • I feel like I am coping with learning in the class.

They also have the opportunity to make a comment about any other aspect of learning in a subject if they wish. This is the third year of running the surveys and they continue to provide a valuable snapshot of how the girls are feeling about their learning. Heads of Department use this data in the evaluation of teaching programs and to help identify areas where we may be able to better support the girls.

The responses from the girls are overwhelmingly positive. However, the comments also highlight the astuteness of our girls in being able to provide constructive feedback about their learning. I have shared a few of these below.

  • My teacher is always open to catch up and help out which I find really helpful, especially when leading up to exams.
  • I’m always receiving help from both peers and teachers I always feel as if there is a fun and enjoyable aspect to it.
  • I enjoy this class as we are allowed to be creative, but I would like if we had a larger all year focus on apparel.
  • My teacher is a very good teacher, and she makes me want to learn and makes me feel comfortable to ask lots of questions.
  • I like the content we are studying this term (the human body) and I like the split of practical lessons into fun and games as well as some theoretical applications to practicals.
  • I enjoy Commerce, but I feel that the lessons move slightly slowly at times. However, I still find the lessons fairly engaging!
  • The teachers are prepared to answer any questions they have a very good portrayal of instruction and bring a good energy.
  • The lessons can sometimes be fun but there is a lot of work to do in the lesson and sometimes I get overwhelmed.
  • My teacher checks in with me and I am not afraid to put my hand up in class.
  • I find that most lesson contents are written and completed on OneNote. I believe it would be beneficial to occasionally alter this as it often becomes repetitive and tedious.

We have quite deliberately chosen to make the responses to these surveys anonymous so that the girls can be honest in their feedback. As always if there are specific concerns relating to your daughter, I encourage you to contact her teacher in the first instance if it relates to a specific subject or her Luminary if it is a more general concern. We will continue to use the broader feedback to nuance the learning journey and further develop the quality of the programs delivered at MLC School.

Good Times had by all at the P&F Cocktails, Canapés and Conversations Event

Good Times had by all at the P&F Cocktails, Canapés and Conversations Event

Last Sunday, the P&F held their Cocktails, Canapés and Conversations event at Henley’s Bar and Grill, Barangaroo. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon, which was happily attended by parents from all year groups. The venue was perfect for mingling and meeting others, and the substantial canapés were a big hit. Many stories were shared about our daughters and school experiences and we all agreed how nice it was to take time out to relax and catch up.

Thank you to all parents who attended. The MLC School P&F is focused on building community and are planning several social events to get together and celebrate our wonderful school. Our next Senior School P&F event will be a Family Trivia Night in Term 4 (more information about this event will be out shortly).

If you would like to get involved or find out more about the P&F please contact pfpresident@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au.

The Push Up Challenge 2023!

The Push Up Challenge 2023!

Last term, the Senior School participated in the 2023 Push Up Challenge, an active challenge to push for better mental health in Australia.

From Thursday 1 June to Friday 23 June, those taking part aimed to complete 3,144 push ups, which was the number of Australians who lost their lives to suicide in 2021.

Every day participants learned about mental health and how to take care of themselves. It was a great way to get active and have fun as a School with many fun active challenges in assemblies!

We did absolutely amazingly well as a community, entering 40 teams of students, staff and even our canteen and IT staff teams! We were able to raise a grand total of $28,298 and did 310,584 push ups altogether to place 14th in all of Australia out of over 1,700 communities! With this money we were able to fund 722 Lifeline phone calls to help those in need of support all across Australia.

A huge congratulations and thanks to all those who participated this year. Please click on the link below to watch a special thanks from The Push Up Challenge!

Kindergarten Learn about Chickens

The Kindergarten girls have been thrilled to have some special visitors this week which have provided an excellent source of inspiration for learning – four chickens!

The girls have written about them using verbs and adjectives in English, drawn detailed pictures of them and learnt about how we use chickens and their eggs for food in CLP. Farmer John Clear (Director of e-Learning) gave an interesting talk teaching us lots of fascinating chicken facts. The girls are now chicken experts!

Year 6 Sydney Science Park Inquiry Projects

We are very grateful for all the connections that our School community is able to put us in touch with.

One of our Year 6 Parents, Deb Jenkins, was able to connect us with Kate Dryden from Sphere Infrastructure. Kate’s agency, Sphere, ‘works across all sectors of environmental infrastructure and services (including water, waste and energy) to help clients deliver on their goals by providing expert guidance on technical, financial, commercial, legal and strategic aspects of their business or projects.’

This aligns exactly with the Year 6 ‘big idea questions’ in which they are developing solutions for their Sydney Science Park Inquiry projects.

Kate shared ideas and inspiration for the Year 6 projects about how the circular economy can incorporate the use of water, waste and energy in the world. From creating energy from garbage waste to heat fish tanks, to using electric cars to reduce gases in the environment when transporting.

She shared her expertise, allowing the girls to think beyond their large project ideas at Sydney Science Park, to smaller projects for businesses or individual houses. Showing that changing human behaviour through incentive initiatives (such as the return and earn bottle recycling program) and petitioning councils and government to change legislation (such as plastic bags being banned in many shops) are also viable and worthy solutions to their ideas.

Every parent and friend of a Year 6 MLC School student is assisting as a Primary source and expert in their field of the girls’ inquiry projects. A big thank you to all involved.

Year 6 Welcomes Another Parent Guest Speaker

The Year 6 students have been lucky this week to have another parent guest speaker, Mr Neeraj Sharma. Neeraj  works at UNSW and he came to share his expertise on sustainable energy production and storage solutions.

We were particularly interested to hear about innovations in battery production and limitations of recycling batteries. Neeraj’s expertise will be helpful for many of our girls as they embark on their Showcase projects about how energy can be produced and stored in the Sydney Science Park.

We thank Neeraj for sharing his time and expertise with us.

You may have heard your daughter speak at home about Heart Points and Accountability Points. These have been introduced in 2023 to promote positive behaviour and to enhance the supportive and safe learning environment that we have here at MLC School.

The Heart Points reflect the positive behaviour that we see around the school that reflect our School values of Courage, Compassion, Respect and Growth. Teachers award the points regularly around the school and these are directly converted into house points which are then recognised within our house meetings and assemblies with awards. If a student receives three House points, she receives a bronze certificate and works her way toward gold, which will be celebrated in a whole School assembly. I often wish we could have the booming voice of Dumbledore in the hallways declaring “10 points for Abbeythorpe!” at any given moment to celebrate the wonderful things that our students do on a day to day basis.

We also have Accountability Points, which are allocated to our students to remind them to be independent and responsible for their learning. These points are allocated to reflect a diversion from School rules and may be allocated for infringements such lateness, incorrect uniform, jewellery and inappropriate behaviour. If a student receives three Accountability Points, she will receive a lunchtime detention, and for a further three Accountability Points, she will receive an after school detention. The monitoring of these allow us to pick up on any issues with students early in order to provide support that the student needs to stay on track. We take a restorative approach to our behaviour management and we are always looking to improvement and growth.

I was so happy to see a flurry of Heart Points come through last week after the HSC and IB Art and Design Showcase as a number of lovely friends went above and beyond to help their friends in the last hours of their major works, showing so much compassion!

I have recorded a video below about this new system and a few more changes in the Senior School, I hope you enjoy it.

The Importance of School Attendance

Regular school attendance (including being on time) is crucial for all students to achieve success and maximises social and academic outcomes and life opportunities.

More than that, regular school attendance enhances other opportunities such as study, work and health. Developing positive school attendance habits at an early stage will help your daughter to develop important skills, knowledge and values, engage in her learning, develop support networks and access the benefits of holistic education.

Attendance at school every day is important. Non and partial attendance has a variety of effects on students, both academically and socially. Absenteeism can increase social isolation, including alienation and lack of engagement with the School community and peers, leading to emotional and behavioural difficulties (AITSL, 2020).

As a school, we are required to monitor and report on student attendance, addressing patterns of unsatisfactory or irregular attendance and patterns of absence. We proactively monitor patterns of absence such as habitual lateness, regularly leaving school early, multiple single day absences over a term, school programs/camps and unexplained absences.

We appreciate your support in ensuring your daughter arrives prior to 8.15am ready to attend a full school day, and fully able to participate and engage in her learning. Students arriving after 8.15am must sign in at the Studies Office with their parent’s explanation for late arrival.

Students requiring early leave should inform the Studies Office, giving 24 hours notice and advising the reason. Students will not be permitted to sign out or leave school without prior parent approval.

Students in Year 7 to Year 10 must be collected by a parent or carer if leaving the School. Students with repeated lateness or patterns of failing to follow School process (such as attending all lessons on time and signing in and out of School) may be issued with Accountability points, possibly resulting in further follow up.

For further information please see the attached document by clicking here.

As always we wish to work in partnership with you, ensuring the best possible outcome for your daughter, Your support with her attendance is very much appreciated.

Year 7

Year 7

Thank you for your feedback on how much you enjoyed hearing from the girls in last week’s newsletter. What makes me so excited is how many of the girls responded and wanted to share their experiences. So…. I have some more for you!

‘Going into Year 7, I was nervous about what would happen. Mostly about assessments and schoolwork. This year I have learnt to go out of my comfort zone and give everything a go. We are always provided with great opportunities and should take advantage of each and every single one. Overall Year 7 has been great and I can’t wait to go into Year 8!’
Isabel F

‘Reflecting on my first year of high school fills me with gratitude for the positive experiences I’ve had. I am blessed to have met some amazing individuals who have been a constant support system for me through thick and thin. Despite the occasional obstacles that came my way, I learned the art of effective communication and setting healthy boundaries, which only strengthened my relationships. Although my academic journey had its ups and downs, I’m proud of myself for staying on track and not giving up. As I enter Year 8, I feel excited to continue my journey of growth and learning.’
Leyla S

‘As a newcomer to MLC School, I have found my journey through Year 7 has been absolutely amazing. Of course, there have been certain challenges that I have not experienced before, like assessments, studying and learning to stay organised. I have loved weaving my way through Year 7 and putting myself to my full potential. Personally, I love being busy. I love doing sports every day and I love having events on, because I find always having something on makes me happy and stimulated. I love that so far Year 7 has been filled with so many activities and events on, that I have been stimulated and happy. I also love how social everything has been. I have made so many friends. So many lovely friends that support me, help me, love me and respect me. I do think that next year I could improve by studying more. Studying is not exactly my strong suit because I find myself distracted by small things. If I focus on what I’m doing at the second, I can productively research, and study. I think that my journey through the rest of Year 7 and my journey through high school will be just as organised, happy and stimulated, full of friends, studying, focusing and challenges! I look forward to the rest of my high school years and working to my full potential.’

Year 7 Archibald Prize Excursion

Last Thursday Year 7 visited the Art Gallery of NSW to explore a variety of new and exciting art exhibitions. This year the excursion was slightly different, with the day split between the original South Building and the new North Building. Moving around the spaces in small groups, Year 7 explored a range of exhibitions, completing writing and drawing activities in response to what they observed.

In South Building, students viewed the iconic 2023 Archibald Prize, which also included the Wynne and Sulman prizes. Year 7 were very excited to see this exhibition as they recently completed a critical review of a portrait of their choice from this show. Students also went on an exciting treasure hunt in the Grand Courts, seeking out contemporary Indigenous artworks added to the 19th and 20th century European masters exhibition with the intention of bringing Indigenous perspectives into the telling of Australia’s history.

In the North building, students participated in an interactive and meditative clay activity. This was part of artist Kimsooja’s artwork ‘Archive of mind’ which forms the centrepiece of the ‘Making Worlds’ exhibition. Year 7 also explored ‘Dreamhome: Stories of Art and Shelter’, an exhibition revealing what 29 artists from Australia and internationally believe to be the idea of ‘home’. Finally, students sat out on the sunny deck to observe and re-draw Yayoi Kusama’s ‘Flowers that Bloom in the Cosmos’, re-interpreting the sculpture using flowers that had symbolic meaning to them.

Year 8

Year 8

This week in Year 8, we had a special Year Meeting where Sarah Jauncey came to speak about the upcoming Year 8 Adventure Camp. From Monday 30 October to Thursday 2 November 2023, students will be travelling to Murramarang National Park and surrounding areas for four days and three nights of tent/cabin sleeping, surfing, bushwalking, fishing and other fabulous outdoor activities. Information about the camp should be sent home next week and it will detail items required for the camp. This camp is quite different to the Immersion Experience and with the weather we have been having (yay, sun!), it looks like it’s going to be a wonderful four days outdoors.

The next couple of weeks are quite assessment filled for Year 8, so please check in on your daughter, how is she preparing and coping with the workload? The students are welcome to attend subject lunchtime clinics and seek additional support from their teachers if they are unsure about what is expected of them.

If you are concerned about how your daughter is managing her time, please reach out to her Luminary. Luminaries can help to work with your daughter on study strategies and planning for tasks. It might also be a good time to reflect on the Prue Salter educational/study skills seminar attended by your daughter and a parent in Year 7. The online Study Skills Handbook, which you have access to (click here), has many useful tools that can be revisited throughout high school.

Have a great weekend, and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Year 9

On Friday 18 August, our first group of Year 9 students volunteered their time at the Bill Crews Foundation, here is a recount of the experience from our very own, Gauri Nathan:

“Last Friday, students from the Mooramoora Year 9 Luminary group travelled to the Exodus Foundation Loaves and Fishes restaurant in Ashfield. This charity is run by the Bill Crews Foundation and is a restaurant, church and homeless shelter that provides direct assistance to those who are experiencing homelessness or poverty. The restaurant is always open and is welcome to anyone who would like to enjoy a hot meal.

Our Luminary group was split into two teams -– the servers and the wait staff. I was on the serving team and I handed out takeaway meals which included a main course, a side dish and a dessert. What I enjoyed most about participating in this volunteering activity was seeing the smile on everyone’s faces as they received their meal and the kindness they showed towards us.

It was a fulfilling experience and I was honoured to be in the first group to take part in this service opportunity.”

Looming with Love is an initiative supported by our very own Rev Sally where students across the Senior School loom during lunchtime. Students have been looming to create donations for Hats for Homeless and donations are also being made to support the Bill Crews Foundation. A special thank you to Layla Alameddine and Serena Farley who are also supporting this initiative by consistently assisting students in the Junior School with their looming – thank you both!

Anisha Sivagurunathan, congratulations on your second place (a Silver Medal!) at CIS Netball on Monday!

We wish all the best to our Year 9 team competing in the RoboCup robotics competition next week! The group has been working hard coding for and preparing their robot to rescue a can ahead of next weeks event.

Year 9 students were among the IGSA Athletics team who competed today for our school, more on this next week!

Appointment times have been advertised for Year 9 students to begin purchasing the Senior Uniform through the School’s Uniform Shop. This uniform can be worn by students from the first day of Term 4 (Tuesday 10 October 2023) ahead of their rollover into Year 10 in Week 5 (Monday 6 November 2023).

Year 10

Year 10

On Tuesday morning, the Year 10 chapel service was held in our beautiful chapel. Reverend Sally Yabsley-Bell conducted the service with the liturgy run by the Leawarra Luminary group. Leawarra’s Luminary is Joseph Pfeffer and they did an excellent job. The theme of service aligned with the School value being explored in Luminary: Courage. Rev Sally’s message to Year 10 reflected on the changes coming up for Year 10 and to look for courage to accept new ideas and experiences. Here is an excerpt of Rev Sally’s prayer for Year 10.

‘Help us to be brave and fill us with courage. Let us see ways to grow in confidence. Let us be courageous in stepping up to new challenges. Help us as we experience a new style of assessment schedule and prepare us for our trip to New Zealand. Year 10 holds some very special new opportunities for us, so please help us to not be overwhelmed by them, rather help us to know we are well-supported and lead us to be resilient as we try new experiences. Let this cohort be strong and uplifting toward each other. May we truly live as Daughters of the Light’.

The assessment block for Year 10 is in Week 8 (Monday 4 September 2023). Year 10 will be at school for the whole week, attending assessments and study sessions that are supervised at school. Students are expected at school from 8.15am to 3.15pm, as per their usual timetable. Year 10 are expected to be on site at school for the whole time. This is a change from previous years and will best support Year 10 with access to their teachers and a structured environment for revision. We hope that this schedule will help Year 10 to use their time effectively during the day and provide time after school for family time, rest, exercise, co-curricular activities and most importantly, a good sleep routine.

I am available on 02 8741 9736 or sconnolly1@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au Monday to Friday if you are concerned about any aspect of your daughter’s wellbeing and life at school.

Year 10 PDHPE

Bstreetsmart was an awesome experience which taught Year 10 students some crucial road safety lessons. Held at Qudos Bank Arena on Wednesday 23 August, it was a massive event with 8000 students from over 45 schools.

We watched a live crash scene where a drunk driver hit a motorbike rider and a pole, leaving one of his friends dead, and multiple people injured. To see an actual car crash like this was very confronting and made us all feel uneasy. However, it taught us the importance of being defensive drivers and how one poor choice can have serious consequences. We then heard numerous stories from those whose lives have been impacted by road safety incidents. These stories were touching and emotional to hear first-hand and brought everything into perspective.

After that, we checked out cool interactive activities during break, like stumbling around whilst using virtual reality goggles which mimicked the feeling of being drink, peeking into police and fire trucks, and road safety quizzes. Everything that was said at the event emphasised the serious effects and irreversible aftermath of driving irresponsibly or under the influence. As many of us are either about to start driving or have already begun, this experience shifted our perspectives and significantly heightened our caution when it comes to being behind the wheel.

Overall, it was a fun and memorable experience that etched important lessons in our minds forever.

Angelina Le (Year 10), Lucy Coxsedge (Year 10)

Year 11

Year 11

After a big week, it’s time for Year 11 to take a breath. They have completed their first week of exams and got most of the big hitters out the way. I hope that the cohort are feeling a degree of achievement at having done this. They have done so with their usual ‘can do’ attitude, and I’m proud of them all for the way they face challenges head on.

I hope that all students take some time at the weekend not only to study for next week, but to decompress. They should play some sport, get outside, see a movie – whatever they need to help reset for another demanding week. I know many students will be rehearsing for the upcoming Dance Showcase, these students are to be commended for the level of commitment they are demonstrating at such a busy time.

I am sure the next week will go quickly. I’ve encouraged the Year group to keep an eye out for communications about the School Athletics Carnival on Monday 4 September 2023. This is a compulsory school event and I’m looking forward to seeing all students there.

Year 12

Year 12

It was a wonderful IB Art and HSC Art, Design and Technology exhibition last Friday evening and so exciting to see what all the students have been achieving and working on.

The Wakakirri dancers who performed last week have made it to the next level and will be performing at a competition on the evening of Monday 4 September 2023.

Congratulations to our HSC Drama students Maiee Hanna, Sofia Jury, Alexandra Lasovski, Adriana Re, Mahi Shah, Lily Walker, Jenna Wright, Kate Cvetkovski, Jennisa Ha, Poppy Hardy, Julia Lok, Francesa Morrison, Milla Newman, Lucy Patterson, Pascale Simington, Mikaela Sitaramayya, Tessa Tomkins and Alexandra Varvarigos on performing their final HSC Drama performances on Wednesday 23 August.

At the Senior Years’ Assembly on Wednesday 23 August, with only Year 12 present, we were treated to an End of Year 7 video, which Fiona Pow, Head of Year for the 2023 cohort from Year 7 to Year 9, had presented to the cohort previously in December 2018.

During Luminary time this week, students have been reflecting on their semester in preparation for the Semester 2 reports, voting on graduation items and filling in their autograph books.

Yesterday, the cohort had a special presentation on Post-school Supports: Medical and Psychological, by the Counselling and Student Health Team. We thank John Hensley, School Counsellor, Anna Michalopoulos, Head of Counselling and Student Health, Marion Delprado, School Counsellor, and Catherine Roach, School Nurse, for a valuable and useful presentation that will empower the students to not only understand how to seek health and wellbeing supports leaving school but also to encourage them to take ownership of their health.

As we are now back to regular classes and many of the Final HSC major works are completed, there is a continued expectation that students attend their classes. This is an important time and opportunity for the students to get last-minute advice and teacher feedback. Please support the School by:

  • Texting or emailing the Studies Office of absences
  • If students are unwell, please encourage them to go to the school nurse, as they must sign out there
  • If a student has an appointment and is leaving early with parent permission, they still need to sign out so that we know they are off campus.
  • If students have spare periods in either 1ab or 3ab, they still need to be always on-site between 10am to 1.25pm and sign in and out as appropriate

Year 12 should not miss important information regarding final lessons and graduation and are encouraged to attend all classes, Luminaries, assemblies and meetings. With only three weeks left of school, I do encourage all students to make the most of their time at school both academically and by enjoying the final moments.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me via my direct line 8741 3278 or email at arenwick@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au, if you have any queries, or concerns or simply wish to touch base.

Celebrating Women in Sport

Celebrating Women in Sport

As the excitement builds with the upcoming AFL Women’s season and the momentum of the “Tillies Campaign” promoting women in sports, it’s the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the remarkable female AFL players within the MLC School community.

Since the inception of AFL at MLC School in 2018, there has been a noticeable surge in both the participation numbers and the skill level of the girls in the program. Notably, this success has translated into an increasing number of players transitioning from school-level play to women’s clubs. A pivotal factor in this achievement is MLC School’s status as a feeder school for the Sydney University Australian National Football Club (SUANFC) program. This collaborative relationship is strengthened by the involvement of several school coaches within the SUANFC club.

Over the past two years, MLC School has witnessed a remarkable milestone: six former and current students have emerged as significant players in the SUANFC program. Among them, Arachi Park, AFL Captain 2023, stands out as a true testament to talent and hard work.

Arachi’s journey this year has been nothing short of extraordinary. Starting in the Division 4 team, she quickly ascended to the reserve team and even cameoed in the premier division due to her exceptional skills, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of improvement. Despite still being in Year 12, Arachi has already demonstrated her mettle in the women’s competition. A remarkable feat on its own, her ability to hold her ground in a more mature competition is a testament to her resilience and skill development.

Perhaps even more noteworthy is Arachi’s off-field impact. Awarded the “Players’ Player” title multiple times, her teammates consistently praise her for her composure, kindness, and exceptional leadership. Even at a young age, she fearlessly embraced the role of leading the midfield in a recent match, leaving her teammates in awe of her maturity and drive.

Yasmin Sayer, a youth club standout, has successfully secured her place in the premier division. She has showcased her versatility by filling various positions on the field before solidifying her role in the defensive line. Yas has accumulated a significant number of appearances in the premier division, effectively showcasing her robustness and expertise, notably excelling in her ability to take accurate marks. She often doubles up on the weekend playing in the women’s competition and then at her junior club.

Zara Kilborn has actively participated in the women’s competition for two years, adeptly managing both junior and senior levels of play. Easily recognisable on the field by her distinctive pink headgear, Zara has consistently displayed her prowess in the midfield for the Div 4 Gems. Furthermore, her talents have been recognised as she seamlessly transitioned into the reserves for a number of rounds, showcasing her dedication and skills.

Unfortunately, the Sydney Uni Women’s premier division and gems were knocked out of the first round of finals. Ms Schroder’s Newtown Breakaways are in with another chance this weekend, wishing her the best of luck.

MLC School’s connection with SUANFC has proven invaluable. With coaches like Xavier Maling and James Lees, who bridge both institutions, players benefit from a cohesive coaching experience that seamlessly guides them through their AFL journey.

MLC School students and teachers are representing across the Sydney Women’s Competition:

  • Ms Alex Schroder Newton Breakaway
  • Dakota Dodd (Year 11) Inner West Magpies (2024)
  • Sienna Dodd (Year 9) Inner West Magpies (2026)
  • Sienna Strauss (2022) North Shore Bombers
  • Hayley Kenzler (2019) Sydney University Bombers
  • Zara Kilborn (Year 12) Sydney University Bombers (2023)
  • Arachi Park (Year 12) Sydney University Bombers (2023)
  • Yasmin Sayer (Year 11) Sydney University Bombers (2024)

For those interested in joining the MLC School AFL program or exploring opportunities within the SUANFC, we encourage you to reach out to the sport department and/or Xavier Maling. Becoming a part of this vibrant AFL community means gaining access to expert coaching and a network of fellow enthusiasts.

Important Procedures for Sport Absences from Sport

What to do when you are not able to make training or a game

On the rare occasions that it may be necessary for a player to miss training or a competition, please follow these instructions.

  • If the inability to attend is known in advance – a written explanation (email) from the player’s parent/guardian is to be given to the coach and sports department in advance. This notice should be given as early as possible.
  • If the player is absent from school on the day of training or on competition day – the player’s parent/guardian is asked to advise the coach and sports department of their child’s absence from training or the game.
  • Do not ask your friends or team mates to give your coach the message
  • Do give as much notice as possible
  • If there is a clash with another sport or school event, please speak with the Sports Department to determine which game/event you should attend.

Please Note: Continued failure to attend training or competitions without a timely written explanation is unacceptable and may jeopardise the player’s continued involvement in sport.

A member of the Sports Department will contact parents/guardians of students whose non-attendance at training or games is not notified in the correct manner.

Students are required to attend 90% of all sessions involved with their sport (training and matches).

If Frensham is in your Saturday sport fixtures, your attendance at Frensham is compulsory to be awarded your pocket.

Wet Weather

What do I do if it is Wet Weather?
While on most occasions we would not cancel training for wet weather, cancellations may occur if rain is too heavy to train in or weather conditions deem it unsafe. Additionally, due to safe distancing measures and government guidelines, we may be required to cancel training when we cannot accommodate students safely in an indoor space.

For morning training

The decision to cancel any morning training sessions will be made by 8pm the night before training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook page, followed by an email.

No Facebook post, or email means that activities will still go ahead.

For after school training

The decision to cancel any after school training sessions will be made by 1pm on the day of training.

Wet weather cancellations will be posted on the MLC School Sport Facebook page, followed by an email.

On Saturdays

If you are playing an IPSHA Sport, please use this link to take you to the IPSHA Wet Weather site.

Once on the site, select your venue and there will be a notification if your venue is closed. IPSHA normally make a decision by 7am.

If you are playing an IGSA Sport, visit https://igsasport.spawtz.com/. The IGSA website will let you know if your venue is closed or open.

When possible, we will also post the cancellations on our Sport Facebook page.

On all occasions, it is the individuals’ responsibility to check the wet weather information. The Sports Department, coaches and managers are not always in a position to relay any game cancellations.

MLC School Excels Again at the Ryde Eisteddfod

MLC School Excels Again at the Ryde Eisteddfod

CONGRATULATIONS to Yolanda Deng (Year 7) who achieved 2nd place at the Ryde Eisteddfod last weekend in the verse speaking category.  This was Yolanda’s first year participating in an Eisteddfod. We are so proud of her for her wonderful achievement and for being an excellent role model for MLC School.

“As I sat, watching my competitors compete one by one, I realised how close I was to stepping onto that stage and performing to an audience with only strangers and my parents. I felt my palms getting clammy, while my heart pounded against my chest, a sure sign that my nerves were acting up again. However, as soon as I stepped on that stage, it was almost as if my body was on auto-pilot. After a few lines, I heard my own voice rise in confidence as I spoke with so much certainty that I surprised myself. Of course, I was ecstatic when I found out that I placed second, but this experience has helped me learn a lot. I would have never had the courage to stand on that stage alone to perform last year, and this has only further boosted my confidence.”

– Yolanda Deng (Year 7)

Distinctions in Trinity College of London Examination

Congratulations to Year 9 students, Aryana Sah and Anisha Sivaguranathan who achieved a Distinction in their Grade 7 Trinity College of London examination in Performance Arts.

Aryana and Anisha’s exam piece was a devised performance based on “Picnic at Hanging Rock” by Joan Lindsay and the play adaptations by Tom Wright and Laura Annawyn Shamas. They had to incorporate a number of performance skills of their choice. They used drama, film, voice overs, poetry and prose. The second component of their exam was to give a demonstration and talk about a contributory performance skill they used which was script devising. The third component of the exam was a response to set questions relating to their exam content. This was a digital exam which was filmed and then marked by a London Examiner.

Anisha and Aryana are long term Speech and Drama students commencing lessons in their first year at school 11 years ago. They consistently work hard and deliver, achieving Distinctions and High Distinctions in all their TRINITY and ASCA exams as well as placing in every Eisteddfod they compete in yearly. We are so proud of Anisha and Aryana for being such wonderful representatives of The Speech and Drama Studio and MLC School in our wider community and internationally.
