Senior Wakakirri Story Dance National Nomination 2025
MLC School’s Entry ‘Sam I Am’
Following a powerful and heartfelt performance at the NSW Wakakirri Awards Night on Monday 15 September, I am absolutely delighted to announce that our dancers have received a National Nomination in the Secondary Division of the 2025 Wakakirri Story Dance Competition.
At the heart of this year’s Wakakirri production, lies a powerful story of self-acceptance and identity. The narrative follows Sam, a character who initially shrinks themselves to fit in with the crowd, hiding their individuality to belong. Through dance, drama and production elements, the piece explores Sam’s internal struggle, questioning whether they are simply part of the crowd or someone who deserves to stand out. It is a journey that ultimately celebrates the courage to be oneself.
The team’s success is a testament to their dedication and collaborative spirit. Their performance earned multiple accolades, including:
- Ensemble Award for Dance Performance
- Ensemble Award for Group Dance
- Lead Cast Award for Performance in Acting
- Lead Cast Award for Performance in Dance
- Production Award for Sets and Props
- Spirit of Wakakirri Award
- NSW State Storytelling Award
This recent National nomination reflects the commitment and passion of our dancers and backstage crew, who represented MLC School with pride and professionalism. I would like to sincerely thank the support of my staff Jess Dyson (Assistant Dance Coordinator), Kate Drady, Dance, Drama and Entertainment (DDE) Teacher, Alisha Vigna, DDE Teacher, Afamia Moussa, Dance Tutor and Claudia Willimann. Their creativity, care and commitment throughout this journey have been instrumental in bringing Sam I Am to life. It has been a privilege to lead such a passionate and dedicated team whose contributions continue to elevate the standard of our dance program and inspire our students.
We now eagerly await the National results to be announced in Term 4. Regardless of the outcome, we are incredibly proud of our dancers for sharing such a meaningful story.
