From the Head of Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

What is happening in non-term time?

As the break approaches, we are proud to support our students and staff as they embark on a series of enriching tours around the world.

A summary of the events we are embarking on is below:

Round Square Conference – Dubai

We are grateful that Bridget Kovats, Acting Assistant Head Department – English and Henry Wijanto, Assistant Head of Department – Human Society and its Environment (HSIE), will lead students Meena Kanthathas (Year 10), Angelina Xu (Year 10), Georgia O’Connor (Year 11), Han Nguyen (Year 11), Olivia Pan (Year 11) and Jemima Zoud (Year 11) at The Round Square International Conference of Global Citizenship.

European Music Tour – Vienna and Prague

We wish our musicians the best of luck as they travel today to Europe for what I am sure will be a wonderfully enriching experience both culturally and musically.

VEX Robotics and Robocup Nationals

Good luck to our STEM participants with their competitions during the break. The students and teachers have been working so hard and we cannot wait to hear the results.

Study Camp – MLC School

Our Year 12 students will be launching into their holiday break with Study Camp. During these two weeks, Study Camp will provide the girls with workshops and practice examinations, enabling them to prepare for their final examination blocks.

Final Week

Yesterday we bid farewell to our Class of 2025. In the lead-up to this, Year 12 students participated in a variety of events, beginning with the Class of 2025 Celebration Assembly on Monday and the Old Girls’ Union Chocolate Recess.

On Tuesday, our Year 12 ‘Lifers’ visited the Junior School to meet with our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten girls, followed by Communion for our Middle and Senior years. On Wednesday, Year 12 students had their final day of classes, their last Final Assembly, and a House lunch.

Finally, on Thursday, we held our Paver Ceremony in the morning, followed by the Valedictory Assembly and Service, and concluded the day with our Valedictory Dinner at Le Montage, where we danced the night away!

I was so proud to see our Year 12 girls farewelled so beautifully by the School. It was a fantastic week and a wonderful start to the term break.

Uniform reminder

As we look toward Term 4, could we please ask you to reinforce uniform expectations with your daughter. We have reminded the students of the following in relation to the Summer uniform:

  1. When wearing the summer uniform, students are not permitted to wear the jumper to and from school as the only outer garment. If they wish to wear a jumper, they must have their blazer over the top. The blazer is the only approved outer garment for travel to and from school at all times.
  2. Some students need to adjust the length of their skirts and dresses. The dress and skirt need to go to the knee. Please ensure you have attended to this before students return to School in Term 4.
  3. Students must have the approved sports bag or MLC School bag. No other bags (Longchamp or other back packs) are acceptable.

This is not just for walking through the gates. Students must maintain this uniform as they travel from home to School and on the way home until they are no longer in school uniform.

A reminder too about ear piercings – only one small plain gold/silver sleeper or stud is permitted to be worn in the lobe only. If students choose to add a piercing over the break, it must be removed before returning to School. Click here for the uniform pages in the Parent Information Handbook.

Wishing all of you a restful school holiday break. See you in Term 4!

From the Principal

Term 3 has certainly finished on a high, with the thought provoking yet humorous Year 11 Drama production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead; the remarkable performances that made up the Annual Dance Showcase Once Upon a Time held at NIDA last weekend; the Year 6 Learning Showcase; the Pre-Kindergarten Celebration Of Learning and of course, our farewells to the class of 2025. Throughout the week the School community took turns in expressing their best wishes to the graduating class, with events such as the Old Girls Union Chocolate Recess, House Lunches, final Chapel Service, final Devotional Service, final School Assembly, Valedictory Assembly and last night’s Valedictory Dinner marking this very special time in their lives.

At the final Year 12 Assembly, our 2025 School Captain Marirose Giann spoke beautifully about how perceptions of time change as you move through school and how now, as the graduating students look back, each of those moments suddenly seem to have passed so quickly. Suddenly they are on the precipice of graduation and all that lies ahead.

Many families chose to mark their daughter’s time at MLC School with a commemorative paver. These pavers are located at the main entrance to the School and are regularly visited and viewed by past and prospective families and stand as a record of each girl’s part in MLC School’s rich history. I encourage you to take a look next time you visit that part of the School, together the pavers paint the story of the rich history of the School and the many generations of students who have passed through the School gates.

Our School Captain Marirose Giann, and Vice Captains Lefki Papadopoulos and Evie Papamanuel, along with the team of Portfolio Captains and Prefects have not only led with vision, commitment and joy but have been wonderful role models for our younger students and contributed across all areas of school life. The 2025 Student Leadership team set themselves the goal of building School and House Spirit and they have been remarkably successful in doing so.

We wish our graduating class all the very best for the future and know that their time at MLC School has equipped them with knowledge, skills, friendships, and experiences that will enable them to navigate whatever lies ahead.

I extend my best wishes to all students and families for the coming term break and remind our Year 12 students that the School will be open for study camp so that you can utilise staff expertise and take the time to complete papers under examination conditions or study with friends. Thank you to all staff who have offered their time to assist our students and to those who are leading school groups to the Round Square International Conference in Dubai and the European Music tour.

I look forward to seeing everyone back, refreshed, and ready to take on the challenges of Term 4 on Tuesday October 14.

Tess Serves as a Youth MP in the State Youth Parliament

Tess Serves as a Youth MP in the State Youth Parliament

Earlier this year, I had the amazing opportunity to serve as a youth MP in our State Youth Parliament, where we worked in committees to write bills about all sorts of important issues that we would get to debate and pass during our week in Parliament. I was on the Women’s Affair’s Committee, which meant we got to propose a piece of legislation on an issue we found important, for which we landed quickly on women’s health and medical discrimination. We wanted to address problems like diagnoses often being based on male physiology and experiences, women’s health services being less accessible, and education neglecting symptomatic and treatment differences, which means across Australia (and the world), women have worse health outcomes across the population. We spent weeks drafting and amending the bill, and ultimately passed it successfully through our parliament. What was particularly special about this program, however, is that it hasn’t only been hypothetical.

While the program itself is a simulation of the government process, it is actually held in the NSW Parliament and chaired by MPs and ministers. Most excitingly, my committee has recently been invited by The Hon Jodie Elizabeth Harrison, the State Minister for Women, to discuss and present our bill for its possible contribution to future legislation. Youth Parliament has been truly beneficial because it gives us, as young representatives, the chance to raise important issues we see around us – we had environmental, mental health, economic, and many more committees who have been similarly focused in their areas. Beyond the experience, this opportunity also let us enter into the real and pressing discussions that are happening in government and contribute to improving – not just noticing – the problems we live with. I would encourage any students, not only those who are already enjoying politics or are experienced debaters, to apply for next year and really get involved with what they’re passionate about.

– Tess Petschner (Year 12)

You can read the full bill Tess contributed to here.

The Y NSW Youth Parliament program is a program for students in Year 10 –Year 12 across the state of New South Wales to come together to learn civics education first-hand, develop advocacy skills, and build their leadership skills, confidence, and strong friendships.

The Y NSW’s Youth Parliament program started in February when Tess was selected as one of 93 Youth MPs, holding the seat for Parramatta.

Senior Wakakirri Story Dance National Nomination 2025

Senior Wakakirri Story Dance National Nomination 2025

MLC School’s Entry ‘Sam I Am’

Following a powerful and heartfelt performance at the NSW Wakakirri Awards Night on Monday 15 September, I am absolutely delighted to announce that our dancers have received a National Nomination in the Secondary Division of the 2025 Wakakirri Story Dance Competition.

At the heart of this year’s Wakakirri production, lies a powerful story of self-acceptance and identity. The narrative follows Sam, a character who initially shrinks themselves to fit in with the crowd, hiding their individuality to belong. Through dance, drama and production elements, the piece explores Sam’s internal struggle, questioning whether they are simply part of the crowd or someone who deserves to stand out. It is a journey that ultimately celebrates the courage to be oneself.

The team’s success is a testament to their dedication and collaborative spirit. Their performance earned multiple accolades, including:

  • Ensemble Award for Dance Performance
  • Ensemble Award for Group Dance
  • Lead Cast Award for Performance in Acting
  • Lead Cast Award for Performance in Dance
  • Production Award for Sets and Props
  • Spirit of Wakakirri Award
  • NSW State Storytelling Award

This recent National nomination reflects the commitment and passion of our dancers and backstage crew, who represented MLC School with pride and professionalism. I would like to sincerely thank the support of my staff Jess Dyson (Assistant Dance Coordinator), Kate Drady, Dance, Drama and Entertainment (DDE) Teacher, Alisha Vigna, DDE Teacher, Afamia Moussa, Dance Tutor and Claudia Willimann. Their creativity, care and commitment throughout this journey have been instrumental in bringing Sam I Am to life. It has been a privilege to lead such a passionate and dedicated team whose contributions continue to elevate the standard of our dance program and inspire our students.

We now eagerly await the National results to be announced in Term 4. Regardless of the outcome, we are incredibly proud of our dancers for sharing such a meaningful story.

From the Director of Learning Enhancement – High Potential Learning

From the Director of Learning Enhancement – High Potential Learning

High Potential Learning

High Potential Learning refers to the recognition and nurturing of students who demonstrate abilities beyond what is typical for their age. These abilities may be intellectual, creative, physical, or social-emotional. The aim is not to label children, but to understand their unique strengths and support their development in meaningful ways.

In Australia, the leading framework for understanding giftedness is Françoys Gagné’s Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT). This model distinguishes between giftedness (natural abilities) and talent (developed skills), emphasising that potential should be nurtured through various learning environments as well as considering student motivation and engagement.

Recent research emphasises that recognising and nurturing high potential learners requires a comprehensive and inclusive approach. In particular, Dr Michelle Ronksley-Pavia an Australian researcher, is known for her work on twice-exceptionality, neurodiversity, and inclusive education. Her findings challenge traditional views of giftedness and advocate for inclusive, nuanced approaches to identifying and supporting high potential learners. In this way, Dr Ronksley-Pavia has noted that formal testing is not always essential for identifying students with exceptional abilities. Instead, a multifaceted identification process – considering teacher observations, student work samples, classroom engagement, creativity, and motivation – may provide a fuller picture of a child’s potential. This approach aligns with the Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT) which suggests that both innate abilities and environmental factors contribute to talent development. By moving away from exclusive reliance on academic scores, this ensures diverse strengths and talents are recognised and supported, including those in non-academic domains such as leadership, the arts, or social-emotional skills.

This perspective has been endorsed by UNSW’s Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre, (GERRIC) which advocates for a holistic view of student growth and potential. GERRIC offers programs designed for students in Year 3–Year 10. These programs run during school holidays and provide intellectually stimulating experiences across topics like brain sciences, virtual reality, cryptology, and cinematic sound design.

Key dates for the upcoming GERRIC programs include:

  • Friday 12 September 2025 – Program launch and scholarship applications opened
  • Monday 29 September 2025 – General ticket sales begin
  • Wednesday 14 to Friday 16 January 2026 – Junior Program (Year 3–Year 6)

Delving into the research on feedback with Visual Arts

In the recent professional learning workshop, staff began with a heartfelt reflection: What is the most significant piece of feedback you’ve ever received, and how has it shaped who you are today? This simple yet profound question opened the door to rich conversations about growth, resilience and the transformative power of feedback in our lives and our work.

Together, we explored the current research that underpins effective feedback, drawing on key practitioners that continue to shape contemporary educational practice:

  • The Power of Feedback Revisited (Wisniewski, Zierer & Hattie, 2020)
  • Visible Learning: Feedback (Hattie & Clarke, 2018)
  • Dylan Wiliam’s Formative Feedback Framework

These works remind us that feedback is not just about correction, it’s about connection. It’s about helping learners see where they’re going (feed-up), understand how they’re progressing (feedback), and envision their next steps (feed-forward).

We unpacked the characteristics of feedback that truly moves learning forward and resonated with Dylan Wiliam’s research and thinking that:

  • ‘Feedback should cause thinking. It should be focused; it should relate to the learning goals that have been shared with the students; and it should be more work for the recipient than the donor.’
  • ‘The only important thing about feedback is what students do with it… If our feedback doesn’t change the student in some way, it has probably been a waste of time.’

To bring theory into practice, we analysed examples and non-examples of targeted feedback in Stage 6 Visual Arts which was created by Co-Pilot. This feedback sparked deep and thoughtful discussion of what teaching and learning might have occurred.

We then co-constructed a practical resource that maps out the metalanguage of artistic forms and includes ‘reach statements’: actionable, student–friendly prompts that guide learners toward deeper engagement and growth.

It was a session filled with insight and momentum, where theory met practice, and every voice contributed to shaping feedback that truly moves learning forward.

From the Head of Junior School

From the Head of Junior School

It has been a week of mixed emotions at MLC School. Our very excited Kindergarten girls sang ‘So Long Farewell’ to our Year 12 graduates at their Final Assembly. I do not think there was a dry eye amongst the graduating class. Another touching moment occurred when the Senior girls, who have attended MLC School since Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten, visited the Junior School to play games with the girls. In turn, the Year 12 ‘Lifers’ received a farewell card from our youngest students, who drew portraits of the ‘big girls’! We wish our Year 12 students the very best for their approaching final examinations.

Dance Showcase

Last weekend, MLC School hosted our annual Dance Showcase at NIDA. It was spectacular! The standard of our co-curricular dance program is exceptional and the envy of other schools. It was a joy to see our Junior School girls being inspired as they watched our Senior School students perform during the concert and on the backroom screens. Thanks to our talented and dedicated Dance, Drama and Entertainment (DDE) Department. View the full story here.

Kindergarten and Year 1 Adventure Camp

Kindergarten experienced their first Outdoor Adventure Camp at Queen’s Park in Concord. Year 1 also explored the great outdoors and got muddy at their Outdoor Adventure Camp at Lane Cove National Park. Read the article here.

Year 6 Showcase

Tuesday evening was very significant and successful for Year 6 as they hosted their annual ‘Showcase’. This evening provided an opportunity for each girl to display their skills in their chosen area of research and share their achievements in other subjects. The students selected an environmental area to research based on the new Sydney Science Park being built next to Western Sydney Airport. Year 6 students have been working with industry partners as part of this exciting and unique project. It was wonderful to see all our Year 6 parents participating, interviewing the girls about their area of study. Some of our Year 6 parents, who have a related professional background, also worked with Year 6 throughout this project. The standards were very high. This work reminds me of the importance of an all-girls education, providing opportunities for our young women to strive in STEM domains that boys dominate in co-educational environments. View the Year 6 Teachers’ feature here.

Celebration Assembly

Each term, the Junior School focuses on one of our School Values. This term, the focus was on Respect. We conclude each term with our Celebration Assembly, acknowledging girls on the Junior School campus who have been recognised for authentically living the School Values. As Audacia (our newsletter) reaches your inbox, Kindergarten to Year 5 will be participating in ‘Stay & Play’, an event held each year on the last day of Term 3. Our Junior School Student Council (JSSC) hosts a fun afternoon of activities and sells items to raise money for the JSSC to purchase items for the School. Thanks also to our Year 5 parents who provided a cake stall and ran the popcorn and snow cone stalls.

I will write to you again prior to the commencement of the final school term and I look forward to seeing all the girls return on Tuesday 14 October 2025, for a fulfilling Term 4.

Year 1 Explore Lane Cove National Park

Year 1 Explore Lane Cove National Park

This week, Year 1 had a great time at Lane Cove National Park for their Day Camp! The day began with singing together on the bus ride before arriving and jumping straight into the first challenge: collecting sticks and leaves to build shelters for the local lizards. The girls worked together to make their shelters sturdy, even adding Banksia cones as decoration. Our guides explained that Banksias are iconic Australian plants. They play an important role in the ecosystem by providing nectar for birds, insects, and small mammals, and their woody cones release seeds after bushfires, helping regenerate the forest.

Next came some map drawing. The girls carefully drew and labelled maps of the local area before putting their work to the test in a scavenger hunt. They searched for natural treasures such as seed pods, red leaves, tree sap, bees, and even funny-shaped clouds.

A walk along the river gave everyone the chance to spot lizards basking in the sun and to pause quietly to listen for bird calls. Along the way, the girls collected leaves and flowers to create a collaborative class artwork back at camp.

After a picnic lunch together, the day wrapped up with energetic team games before the bus ride back to school.

It was a fantastic day of learning, teamwork, and exploring the great outdoors!

My favourite thing was playing the team games at the end. I loved the chicken and duck game!
– Amelia Shi (1A)

I loved when we walked along the river. We found a cockatoo hiding in the branches!
– Audrey Stillone (1R)

Something I learned was that you can build a shelter out of sticks!

Year 6 Showcase

Year 6 Showcase

This week our Year 6 students proudly hosted their Showcase Evening, celebrating nine weeks of learning and creativity. The night began with four engaging performances centred around the key pillars of our unit: Heat, Energy, Water, and the Circular Economy. Each group wrote and performed a song or created a short play to bring their pillar to life.

Following the performances, students presented their research projects to parents and guests. These impressive displays included experiments, models, quizzes, web pages, and detailed process journals documenting their learning journey.

It was a fantastic evening, filled with enthusiasm and pride, and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

Year 8

Year 8

As we conclude Term 3, it is remarkable to reflect on the whirlwind of activities and achievements that have defined this term. This week marks the final week for our Year 12 students, and it has been filled with numerous celebration events. We trust that our Year 8 students have enjoyed participating in these events and witnessing their ‘Big Sisters’ navigate the emotional highs and lows of this significant week. Fostering connections between different year groups is an integral part of our School community, and we believe these interactions enrich the school experience for all students.

Looking ahead to next term, Year 8 students will have the opportunity to nominate themselves for the position of Middle Years Leaders. The guidance and mentorship provided by their Year 12 ‘Big Sisters’ have undoubtedly demonstrated the value of having an older mentor and leader. We encourage all Year 8 students to consider this opportunity to develop their leadership skills and contribute to the School community.

This week, some students participated in off-site sessions with seniors from the Inner West Neighbour Aid. The accompanying photographs capture moments from these interactions. Evangeline Black provided the following reflection on their session:

‘During our recent visit to the Strong Together Service-Learning project, we kicked off the day with a 94th birthday celebration with coffee cake and a fun trivia game. Everyone had a great time answering questions that covered a variety of topics, with varying levels of difficulty. We organised into two teams, competing with much cheering and laughter.’

As a reminder, students will be required to wear their Summer uniforms next term. Many students have experienced growth spurts over the winter months, so please ensure that skirt lengths are checked and adjusted to sit at knee level.

Term 4 will commence on Tuesday 14 October 2025. We look forward to another productive and engaging term ahead.

Year 8 and Year 10 Maths Enrichment Day

Year 8 and Year 10 Maths Enrichment Day

MLC School hosted the Inquisitive Minds Talented Maths Workshop on 15 and 16 September 2025. Selected students from Year 8 and Year 10 worked together to solve a range of hands-on problems and competed against the likes of Burwood Girls, Strathfield Girls, Meriden, Rosebank and Shore.

Although Mathematics is not usually a contact sport, the competition got quite heated up in Daphne Line Hall with pairs from Burwood Girls (Year 10) and MLC School (Year 8) taking the win for the first activity of the day. Summer Nguyen (Year 8) and Lauren Liu (Year 8) achieved the rare feat of completing all the set questions with 30 seconds left on the clock, earning themselves a shiny medal (and a lot of chocolate!).

The workshop aimed to teach students advanced problem-solving strategies, as well as considering the best way to approach problems. Some students chose to solve more of the easier questions to rack up points quickly, while others chose to spend more time on the questions worth 7+ points. Some chose to complete their problems in numerical order, while others focused only on the chocolate challenge questions. After spending too long on one problem, some students knew when it was time to move onto another, whilst others persevered until the end.

The final activity had our girls pairing up with students from other schools for another round of competitive problem solving. The top five pairs for Year 10 all consisted of MLC School students, with Sophia Hu (Year 10) taking the overall points prize with her partner from Shore. Year 8 also had a strong showing with Bonnie Li (Year 8) and her partner from Meriden taking the overall prize.

It was an amazing two days of high-level problem solving and forming new friendships that resulted in both our Year 8 and Year 10 teams being crowned the Talented Mathematics Champions for 2025. The students were completely immersed with all the activities throughout the entire day, and it was so great to see the signature competitive yet supportive nature of MLC School girls on full display.

Congratulations Mathematicians!

Year 8 Host Exchange Students

Year 8 Host Exchange Students

In the last two weeks, I have had the privilege of hosting Maeve, a student from Scotch Oakburn College in Launceston, Tasmania. Throughout my hosting experience, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to welcome a visitor to our School, and to show her all things MLC School. One of the best parts of hosting exchange was being able to enjoy fun activities on the weekends. The highlight of our weekends together was the Bridge Climb, a very memorable and fun experience, which neither of us had ever done. Even though we were from the same country, we quickly realised the differences in our lives and cities. I was lucky to be able to give Maeve a taste of Sydney, and I was glad to have been able to make such a powerful and insightful friendship. Overall, this was an experience to remember forever, and I cannot wait to visit Maeve in Term 4.

– Leela Das (Year 8)

This term I was lucky enough to host Bella, an exchange student from Tasmania. It was so exciting showing her around school and Sydney for two weeks. It was interesting comparing school routines like how in Tasmania, every core class has their own classroom where all their lessons are held. Hosting an exchange student was such a rewarding experience as it gave a me a fresh perspective on both where I live and where others in Australia live. Although their visit was short, we created life long memories and new connections.

– Nella Duncan (Year 8)

For the last two weeks I have had the pleasure of having an exchange student, Olivia, from Adelaide over in Sydney. While she has been here, we have explored all different parts of Sydney, some places I hadn’t even been to before! We visited Bondi and went for lunch at Icebergs the day before school started. As well as this, we went to Cockatoo Island, Luna Park and the Davis Cup Tennis. Even though we both did different schoolwork at times, when we were both involved in the same things it was so interesting to learn about the differences in our work. We have experienced so many of the landmarks of Sydney, and each other’s classes and schoolwork, and hopefully we continue these things all the way up till we head to the airport!

 – Camille Sheehan (Year 8)

Year 9

Year 9

Celebrating Year 9 service

On Friday, some Year 9 students travelled to Ashfield to volunteer at the Exodus Foundation Loaves and Fishes Free Restaurant. Their reflections from the day are included below:

‘I thoroughly enjoyed working with other peers to serve the homeless community. It was an amazing experience, and everyone loved it so much that we would love to volunteer there regularly. It taught me more about the people in need and made me reflect on how fortunate I am. I really loved hearing from the homeless people and making smiles appear on their faces. It was a truly memorable experience that I will remember for the rest of my life’
– Anneka Bigg (Year 9)

I would also like to acknowledge Melisande Pitman, who has been nominated for the Young Volunteer of the Year – Mid Western Sydney Region for her work with Kids Giving Back and Helping Hands for the Homeless in Paddington. Congratulations to Melisande for living the MLC School Value of Compassion!

Exchange Opportunity

This week, Year 9 received a briefing from Sarah Jauncey,  Director of Experiential Learning, about an exciting opportunity for a reciprocal exchange with a female student from Bridge House School in Franshoek, South Africa.

The exchange will take place for six weeks. The MLC School student will travel to South Africa in July 2026 and the Bridge House School student will travel to Australia in November 2026.

A student exchange program complements a student’s formal education in important and exciting ways. Experiences at school, both in students’ academic and co-curricular lives provide the opportunities that will assist them to be global citizens. Living in a home with a local host family gives students the opportunity to become immersed in the culture of both the school and country. This allows students to see beyond their own world and have real life experiences to become an agent of change.

More details about the exchange program can be found here.

Year 10

Year 10

What a great Term 3 it has been for our Year 10 students! They have truly embraced all aspects of MLC School life, showing persistence, enthusiasm, and camaraderie throughout the term.

As we look ahead to Term 4, we’re excited for the Year 10 Immersion Program. I know this will be a highlight of the Year 10 experience. At our Year meeting this week, Head of Experiential Learning, Sarah Jauncey ran through details of the program with Year 10, and you could already sense their excitement for the program. Full details will be shared with families in Week 1 of Term 4. Please keep an eye out for this important communication. Furthermore, to help unpack the program, we’ll also be hosting a Webinar in Week 1, where we’ll walk through everything you need to know. We encourage all families to attend.

Before returning next term, can I please ask for your support in upholding our uniform expectations:

  • Skirts must be knee-length
  • Hair should be of natural colour
  • No false eyelashes, false nails, or non-compliant jewellery

Your support in maintaining these high standards is greatly appreciated.

Bon Voyage to our Year 10 students travelling to Europe on the Music Tour and Dubai for the Round Square Conference, I can’t wait to hear all about it.

I wish you all a safe and restful break. I am looking forward to an exciting and enriching Term 4 with Year 10!

Year 10 PDHPE works with RAW Energy

Year 10 PDHPE works with RAW Energy

This term, our Year 10 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) students embraced the opportunity to work with the vibrant team from RAW Energy Dance Education as part of their Hip Hop dance unit. The program began with a professionally choreographed routine, which students used as a foundation to collaboratively shape their own group performances.

Throughout the experience, the Year 10 cohort displayed enthusiasm, creativity, and strong teamwork. Their final routines reflected their dedication and growth, highlighting both technical skill and an understanding of the elements of dance.

The Year 10 students fostered a positive and respectful environment, cheering on their peers and celebrating each performance with genuine support. We thank them for their energy and commitment and extend our appreciation to RAW Energy for their inspiring guidance. It was a pleasure to witness such teamwork and creativity among the groups.

We thank our Year 10 PDHPE students for their fantastic efforts this term and wish everyone a safe and restful holiday break.

Year 11

Year 11

The past week has been a vibrant and inspiring one on the Year 11 calendar.

On Friday 12 September, we proudly welcomed our 2026 Leadership Team. The whole of Year 11 is already demonstrating the qualities of inclusive, joyful, and courageous leadership, and we couldn’t be prouder of the way the new Captains are stepping into their roles. For more on this special moment, please see Principal Lisa Moloney’s newsletter article from last week.

That same evening, our Year 11 HSC Drama students took to the stage with their performance of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Their talent, creativity and commitment were on full display, and it was a joy to witness their work.

The weekend continued with the Dance Showcase on Saturday 13 September and Sunday 14 September afternoon. I attended Saturday’s performance and was blown away by the energy, skill and passion of our dancers. Many of these students then went on to perform in Wakakirri, on Monday 15 September where they have now received a National nomination – an incredible achievement and testament to their dedication.

We are so excited to see what these talented young people will bring to the stage and to our community in the year ahead.

We farewelled Year 12 this week, and it has brought a mix of emotions – especially for our Year 11 students who are saying goodbye to friends they often see as big sisters. Time is moving quickly, as Marirose Giann, our 2025 School Captain, reminded the whole School during the Final Year 12 Assembly on Wednesday 17 September.

As we look ahead, we’re all trying to make the most of the time we have left with this remarkable cohort. We hope the months ahead will be filled with joy, challenge, community, and meaningful preparation for the future beyond school.

Layla Attends Vogue Summer School in New York

Layla Attends Vogue Summer School in New York

Over the holidays, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Vogue Summer School programme in New York City, where I studied fashion business. Through this programme I was able to make lifelong friends with likeminded individuals and gain valuable insights into the fashion industry through lectures from industry experts.

As part of the program, I visited the Vogue headquarters at the One World Trade Center, explored the Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein archives, and even saw outfits worn by various celebrities to the Met Gala. The program concluded with a group project where we created our own brand and presented our ideas to the class, allowing us to apply what we had learned in a creative and practical way. Being immersed in the heart of the fashion world was an inspiring experience that gave me a deeper understanding of the industry and strengthened my passion for creativity, design, and business.

Year 12

Year 12

This week has been an extraordinary journey of reflection, last lessons, connections with friends and teachers and planning for the future.

As I write this, we have had a wonderful day on Wednesday, with the final Senior School Assembly, House lunches and the final countdown and last lesson. The whole School turned out to wish Year 12 all the best for their examinations and next year. The girls felt very humbled and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when the Kindergarten students sang Auf Wiedersehn Goodbye from the Sound of Music – a true MLC School tradition.

Earlier in the week, the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students, or ‘lifers’, spent a morning with Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten in the Junior School. They read stories, answered questions and played with the youngest members of MLC School. There were a few tears, and some hugs as the girls said goodbye to former teachers. We thank the Junior School for hosting us for a very special morning.

Year 12 are looking forward to the Valedictory Assembly and Dinner, for one last celebration with family, friends and teachers. To sign off for the last time, I am leaving the last words for 2025 in a beautiful reflection from Marirose Giann, the MLC School Captain for 2025. Her speech on behalf of the year group was presented for the School at the assembly on Wednesday.

Please see link below for details of the Year 12 Formal – tickets are now on sale.

Kind regards and take care – it has been a great privilege to support your daughters for the past three years as their Head of Year.

Year 12 – What Happens Next? Offers, Admissions and Support

Year 12 – What Happens Next? Offers, Admissions and Support

As our Year 12 students finish classes this week, here’s what happens next – and how the Futures and Pathways team will support you right through results and offers. Please keep this on your fridge/phone to refer back to and reach out any time if you’re unsure about a step.

We’re here for you!

Ms Cilia will be available by email and for 1:1 meeting as usual during Term 4 and by email and Teams across results/offer rounds. If you need some help with creating applications (UAC, EAS etc), please come and see Ms Massara. If you’re feeling uncertain at any point, reach out early. There’s almost always a good pathway forward.

To do now (by Tuesday 30 September 2025)

  • Create your UAC account and submit/pay the early-bird processing charge ($82) by 11.59pm, Tuesday 30 September 2025. After this date the standard fee applies ($215).
  • You can change your preferences as many times as you like after you apply (no extra cost).
  • If you need assistance creating your UAC account, please see Ms Massara or email nmassara@mlcsyd.nsw.edu.au

SCHOOLS RECOMMENDATION SCHEME

Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS): an early-offer pathway based on your school’s ratings and Year 11 results. Unlike other Early Entry schemes offered by many universities, SRS is through UAC. Key SRS dates this year:

  • Closing date to apply for SRS was 5 September
  • Deadline to add SRS preferences in UAC to be considered for first SRS offers: Thursday 6 November 2025
  • SRS offers released: Thursday 13 November 2025 (more SRS offers on Thursday 27 November and Thursday 11 December 2025)
  • Not all institutions participate in SRS. Click here for more details
  • After the SRS rounds you can reorder your preferred courses/institutions

EDUCATIONAL ACCESS SCHEME

Educational Access Scheme (EAS): if circumstances beyond your control affected Year 11/Year 12 learning, apply now. To see if you are eligible, read categories and required documents here.

  • To be considered in December Round 2 (Tuesday 23 December 2025), submit EAS application and upload documents to UAC by Monday 18 November 2025. (This is done through your UAC application)
  • Watch this video for instructions on how to apply and what you need to download/upload
  • Please email a copy of your application to Ms Cilia by Thursday 20 October so the Educational Impact Statement can completed for you. Ms Cilia uploads the EIS directly to UAC and we do not return them to students.

RESULTS AND OFFERS

How UAC Offers Work

  • There is one offer per round: the highest preference you qualify for.
  • Students can change preferences between rounds to target different courses.
  • Early offers (Universities, SRS, portfolio schemes) can be accepted to secure a place; you can still compete for higher choices later through UAC
  • Adjustment factors (subject/EAS) can raise your selection rank; check institutions for details.
  • Preference strategy: Aspire (stretch), Likely (realistic), Safe (near‑certain).

The December–January timeline

  • Thursday 18 December 2025:
    • HSC results available from 6am (NESA) and ATARs released on UAC website from 9am.
    • IBAS (IB Admissions Score) emailed to students from 10am
    • Last chance to change preferences for December Round 2: by 11.59pm Thursday 18 December 2025
  • Tuesday 23 December 2025: UAC December Round 2 offers released (7.30am). This is the main ATAR-based offer round for many NSW/ACT universities.
  • Tuesday 30 December 2025: Change preferences deadline for January Round 1.
  • Thursday 8 January 2026: UAC January Round 1 offers released (7.30am). Further rounds continue through February. Further information on offer rounds

How to use preferences smartly (December and January)

  1. Before Thursday 18 December 2025, line up a realistic set of courses (include an ‘aspire’, ‘likely’, and ‘safe’ option).
  2. After your ATAR releases (9am, Thursday 18 December 2025), re-order preferences appropriately before 11.59pm that night for December Round 2 offers. (Guide to preferences)
  3. If you receive an offer on Tuesday 23 December 2025 accept it, then – if you want to chase a different course – re-order preferences by Tuesday 30 December 2025 for January Round 1. (Changing preferences after an offer) You can decline offers you accept at a later stage.

Aspire (1–2 choices): a stretch you’d love.

Likely (2–3 choices): realistic based on ATAR/selection rank (remember to check which adjustment factors you are eligible for to increase your selection rank)

Safe (1–2 choices): near-certain admission.

‘I’ve received an offer—what should I do?’

  • Accept any legitimate offer you receive (including early offers) to secure your place. You can still be considered for higher preferences in later rounds if you adjust your list. Do not enrol or pay deposits until you’re confident with your final choice. Early offers explained
  • You might receive one offer per round only – it’s for the highest preference you qualify for. You can accept now and keep reshuffling preferences before the next round. FAQ’s about offers

ACCEPT Vs ENROL

ACCEPT = hold the place for now.
• No payment usually required immediately.
• Keeps options open for later rounds.

ENROL = commit to that university/course.
• Usually involves creating a student account and paying fees/deposit.
• Do this when you are confident with your choice.

Overseas applications (UK/USA) — quick recap

If you’re applying overseas, your applications should be well underway and you should have checked in with Ms Cilia several times. Key reminders:

UK (UCAS)

  • Ensure your Education section (IB qualification and subjects) is complete so your application can be assessed.
  • Early applications (Oxford/Cambridge; medicine/dentistry/vet) have a Wednesday 15 October 2025 (6pm UK) deadline. Please finalise your parts by Monday 6 October 2025 so we can submit school documents on time. (UCAS)

USA (Common App)

  • Typical Early Action/Early Decision deadlines fall in early–mid November (many on Saturday 1 November 2025). Several students have an earlier deadline of Wednesday 15 October. This needed to be finalised with Ms Cilia prior to holidays.
  • Get teacher recommendations organised and complete the Reference Request so I can upload the counsellor reference and transcripts. If you studied elsewhere in Year 9 –Year 12, send me those reports. (CommonApp)

Other – for other countries, follow appropriate applications processes and notify Ms Cilia ASAP if you require any supporting documentation

There are many ways to reach your goal. Between UAC rounds, SRS, EAS, scholarships and overseas options, there’s a strong path for every student.

Don’t forget about Vocational Education such as TAFE, Private universities which offer Diplomas and Bachelor’s degrees with no ATAR requirements (Whitehouse, Torrens, The Hotel School, ICMS etc), and Foundation Studies or Diplomas at university colleges which can transition you into the 1st or 2nd year of a degree upon completion.

Some universities (Notre Dame, Australian Catholic University) offer FEE FREE Tertiary Preparation Programs and Foundation Studies programs which guarantee you entry into a degree on completion of a 6–12 month course.

Please reach out so we can assist you throughout the remainder of 2025.

Important Messages

What an incredible term it has been! Our students have truly outdone themselves, and everyone involved – whether competing, training, or cheering from the sidelines – should feel immensely proud of their achievements.

This weekend, several of our teams will be playing in the IGSA Saturday sport competition grand finals. Best of luck to our MLC01 Netball team, MLC01 and MLC02 Hockey teams, as well as MLC01 and MLC02 Football teams. If you’d like to come along and support, we’ll have blue and pink zinc and pom poms ready to help you cheer the teams on. Let’s show our school spirit – MLC School on three!

On Tuesday the MLC football teams had their final training session before the grand finals. They had a jersey day where all the students needed to come in their favourite football Jersey. With Scott Carpenter’s connections we had several students wearing some very special ‘Ellie Carpenter’ jerseys that she played in for Olympic Games, Asian cup matches and World Cup. Big thank you to Scott for the good luck celebration for this weekend’s match. We will all be channelling Ellie over the weekend!

For those signed up for Term 4 Saturday sport, keep an eye on your inbox in the coming week for an email with details about training sessions and locations. As soon as we receive the draws from IGSA, IPSHA, or other invitational competition organisers, we will share them with you. Please make sure your daughter attends both training sessions and all games.

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday break. We look forward to another action-packed term of sport in Term 4!

2025 Dance Showcase – A Magical Weekend

2025 Dance Showcase – A Magical Weekend

Once Upon a Time – Celebrating the Success of Our Dancers and Crew

What a magical weekend it has been for our talented dancers, marking a spectacular end to Term 3 for our co-curricular and elective dance students. Over Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September, more than 300 students from Year 3 to Year 12 took to the stage at NIDA’s Parade Theatre for the annual MLC School Dance Showcase, and what a performance it was. This year marked our first ever double show, giving every dancer the opportunity to shine and allowing our audiences to experience the full breadth of creativity and storytelling on display.

This year’s showcase, Once Upon a Time, invited audiences into a world of imagination and movement, inspired by the powerful messages found in children’s literature. Through dance, our students explored how stories shape character and identity, unlocking the deeper narratives hidden within the pages of a storybook. Their personal insights and creative interpretations added layers of authenticity and emotional depth to each performance.

With over 500 enrolments across 27 weekly classes in our Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 co-curricular dance program, the showcase is a true celebration of the passion, creativity, and commitment of our dancers. Backstage, our invaluable Year 11 VET Entertainment students, led by 2025 Crew Captain Tiana Robinson (Year 12) worked tirelessly to manage scene changes, costume transitions, and technical operations. Their professionalism and teamwork ensured the seamless execution of the show.

Our dancers were proudly led by 2025 Dance Captain Erin Clowes, (Year 12) whose encouragement and leadership throughout rehearsals helped foster a supportive and unified performance culture. The showcase also reflects the strength of our ongoing partnership with NIDA, which continues to provide our students with a professional venue and our VET Entertainment students with hands-on work placement opportunities, mentored by industry professionals.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated Co-curricular Dance team, Jess Dyson (Assistant Dance Coordinator), Kate Drady, Dance, Drama and Entertainment (DDE) Teacher, Alisha Vigna, DDE Teacher, and Dance Tutors, Afamia Moussa (2019), Claudia Willimann, Ivy Brasher, (2023), Jorja Papantoniou (2023), Madison Clemens (2022), and Maya Simpson (2021). Your creativity, care, and tireless investment in our students make this program truly special. Thank you for nurturing a space where every dancer feels seen, supported, and inspired.

A sincere thank you also goes to Lisa Jinga, Head of Department – DDE, Director of Experiential Learning, Sarah Jauncey, and the entire DDE Department for their unwavering support. Your behind-the-scenes contributions have been vital to the success of this production.

To our supervising staff, thank you for your time and care over the weekend. And to our parents and carers, your support in getting the girls to rehearsals and performances is deeply appreciated. You are an essential part of this journey.

We hope you enjoyed an evening that celebrated the transformative power of storytelling and showcased the incredible talent of our dancers. Once Upon a Time was more than a performance. It was a celebration of creativity, connection, and the joy of movement.
