Year 8 and Year 10 Maths Enrichment Day

MLC School hosted the Inquisitive Minds Talented Maths Workshop on 15 and 16 September 2025. Selected students from Year 8 and Year 10 worked together to solve a range of hands-on problems and competed against the likes of Burwood Girls, Strathfield Girls, Meriden, Rosebank and Shore.

Although Mathematics is not usually a contact sport, the competition got quite heated up in Daphne Line Hall with pairs from Burwood Girls (Year 10) and MLC School (Year 8) taking the win for the first activity of the day. Summer Nguyen (Year 8) and Lauren Liu (Year 8) achieved the rare feat of completing all the set questions with 30 seconds left on the clock, earning themselves a shiny medal (and a lot of chocolate!).

The workshop aimed to teach students advanced problem-solving strategies, as well as considering the best way to approach problems. Some students chose to solve more of the easier questions to rack up points quickly, while others chose to spend more time on the questions worth 7+ points. Some chose to complete their problems in numerical order, while others focused only on the chocolate challenge questions. After spending too long on one problem, some students knew when it was time to move onto another, whilst others persevered until the end.

The final activity had our girls pairing up with students from other schools for another round of competitive problem solving. The top five pairs for Year 10 all consisted of MLC School students, with Sophia Hu (Year 10) taking the overall points prize with her partner from Shore. Year 8 also had a strong showing with Bonnie Li (Year 8) and her partner from Meriden taking the overall prize.

It was an amazing two days of high-level problem solving and forming new friendships that resulted in both our Year 8 and Year 10 teams being crowned the Talented Mathematics Champions for 2025. The students were completely immersed with all the activities throughout the entire day, and it was so great to see the signature competitive yet supportive nature of MLC School girls on full display.
